Perhaps this is our strange and haunting paradox in America—that we are fixed and certain only when we are in movement. At any rate, this is how it seemed to young George Webber, who was never so assured of his purpose as when he was going somewhere on a train. And he never had the sense of home so much as when he felt that he was going there. It was only when he got there that his homelessness began.

A stone, a leaf, an unfound door; of a stone, a leaf, a door. And of all the forgotten faces. Naked and alone we came into exile. In her dark womb we did not know our mother's face; from the prison of her flesh we come into the unspeakable and incommunicable prison of this earth. Which of us has known his brother? Which of us has looked into his father's heart? Which of us has not remained forever prison-pent? Which of us is not forever a stranger and alone? O waste of loss, in the hot mazes, lost, among bright stars on this most weary unbright cinder, lost! Remembering speechlessly we seek the great forgotten language, the lost lane-end into heaven, a stone, a leaf, an unfound door. Where? When? O lost, and by the wind grieved, ghost, come back again.

Mrs. Desert Dog just came by a few minutes ago with a vacuum. She is hypnotic as well. She was muttering something about "spending so much time online, can't even help your wife..." I could not hear her over the sounds of the vacuum. Wonder what she was saying?

That's a for sure cat trait, They sit there and look at everyone and everything saying "that wasn't my fault."

When I was a kid, we had a cat who would sit on the kitchen windowsill, "looking out the window, like us cats do", at dinnertime. Of course, he'd then surreptitiously, slowly, turn his head around, and gaze at the food on our plates, with malice aforethought. If we all looked at him and "caught" him, it was hysterical... he'd slowly, with feigned nonchalance, turn his head back around and resume "looking out the window, like us cats do". If he could have whistled that classic "just minding my own business" tune, he would have.

Women only hear properly when gossiping or eavesdropping

More than two thirds of women admitted that a gossip with friends is the only time they are properly listening to what is being said.

The same percentage think they hear most intently when they are trying to eavesdrop on an argument taking place nearby.

One in four women spy on partners. Only half of men said they only hear properly when gossiping, while four in 10 admitted to listening closely to other people's conversations.

The poll of 2,000 people also found that more than one in five men reckon they always listen carefully to every word, and while less than one in five of women said the same.

RoP...
US report blames Taliban for civilian deaths

"The investigation suggests that villagers had taken refuge in a number of houses in each village. Reports also indicate that Taliban fighters deliberately forced villagers into houses from which they then attacked ANSF (Afghan security forces) and Coalition forces," a statement from the U.S. coalition said.

Neither the U.S. nor Afghan forces took responsibility for killing civilians in Saturday's statement. A second U.S. statement said villagers seeking medical treatment told Afghan doctors that militants were fighting from rooftops while forcing the villagers to remain in their compound.

"The joint investigation team strongly condemns the brutality of the Taliban extremists deliberately targeting Afghan civilians and using them as human shields," the statement said.

Other groups expressed concern for the investigative process. Human Rights Watch on Saturday blasted the U.S. military and said the attack was likely to be "the largest and most tragic loss of life to U.S. bombs so far in Afghanistan."

I recall a study that was in the news a year or so ago, comparing ability in men vs women to recall parts of 1-on-1 conversations accurately, in a restaurant or similar test situation. When there were ongoing background conversations nearby, ie, at other tables, the women scored more poorly than the men. Otherwise, the test subjects performed about the same.

EU parliament blocks Jean-Marie Le Pen from chairing inaugural session

The European Parliament tweaked its house rules on Wednesday to prevent French extreme-right leader Jean-Marie Le Pen from chairing the chamber at its next inaugural session.
The parliament voted massively in favour of changing a rule which calls for its inaugural sessions to be chaired by the assembly's oldest member, which Le Pen, 80, would be if he were re-elected in June European elections.
Under the change, the previous president will preside over the parliament in its first session after elections until a new president can be decided.
The main political groups agreed in March to stop Le Pen from presiding over the chamber after he insisted that the Nazi death camps were a "detail of Second World War history," repeating a statement originally made in 1987 that shocked France.

Two times today I logged onto a work computer, after it had been powered down and over the speakers seems to blair some Islamic prayer or something instead of the system start.

I am trying to get rid of it, but can't.

That was one of the things that I liked about my husband - he was tidy and kept his living space clean. In fact, he was much tidier than I am.

A man went to church one day and afterward he stopped to shake the preacher's hand. He said, "Preacher, I'll tell you, that was a damned fine sermon. Damned good!"
The preacher said, "Thank you sir, but I'd rather you didn't use that kind of language in the Lord's House."
The man said, "I was so damned impressed with that sermon I put five thousand dollars in the offering plate!"
The preacher said, "No shit?"

Charles, thank you for starting us off with a quote from Thomas Wolfe. He's one of my favorite writers and one of the most underrated, IMHO. I urge all of you literary lizards to give him a try. His first novel, Look Homeward, Angel (quoted by OR above), is his best.

I haven't checked LWJ since this AM. Little else is reliable. My inclination is to wait and see, which is the toughest part of all.

IMHO, the Army is NOT going to commit its best troops. (Gee, I wonder where they'll be.) I'm not expected any better an outcome than a return to a temporary status-quo.

After the church service a little boy told the pastor, "When I grow up, I'm going to give you some money.

"Well, thank you," the pastor replied. "But why?"

They seem to complain only about countries that won't kill them.
Perhaps they should actually spend some time with the Taliban. Maybe they could provide US forces with some new ideas about avoiding civilian casualties.

133 lurking faith  Sat, May 9, 2009 2:09:52pm

Mr. faith and I saw the new Star Trek movie this afternoon.

I can only say (and I think I speak for both of us here):

I'm disappointed!

*kicks car; shoots safe*

It had its moments, but it also had plot holes and leaps of stupidity you could drive a semi through. Biggest problem: Kirk came off as a thoughtless, arrogant, unreliable, unlikeable jerk that nobody would follow for a second. IMHO.

Mr. faith has cued up an episode of the original series for us to watch as an antidote.

bbl, maybe

Never mind that, I want one of these. The ultimate guy toy...

[Link: www.evatech.net...]

Without much loss of functionality, a cheaper approach to this is: drive a stake in the middle of your lawn; tie a rope to it; tie the other end of the rope to the lawn mower, with enough slack to reach the edge of your lawn. Start mower, tape dead-man switch in position, walk away, and let the mower drive in ever-smaller circles as it winds itself up on the stake.

I off this solution free to the world.

135 itellu3times  Sat, May 9, 2009 2:20:29pm

My 15yo Sony CRT finally failed last night, so down to the PC shop I goes, and FINALLY have a nice 1280 flatscreen, ... good for six months until I upgrade the workstation and can support HD resolution.

Been using mostly double-headed 1280's at work for years now, I've really been lazy about upgrading the home station, but heck, all I run at home anymore is IE6 and Word2000!

Still, a few more big, brite pixels for browsing LGF!

Grrr!

It looks pretty good from the couple of trailers I saw. Deployed now and won't be able to see it for many months, but I had my hopes up after those disastrous TNG movies...

137 lurking faith  Sat, May 9, 2009 4:39:48pm

re: #136 ThingFish

Well, most people seem to be enjoying the movie quite a lot. So you might, too.

It's colorful and fast. Several of the actors do a great job, or, at least, as good a job as the director asked of them. Everything has is a lot of flash, very little depth. I didn't hate it, but I won't bother to see it again.

It's not a travesty in the way that the Star Wars prequels are. But it doesn't have the heart or guts or brains that Batman Begins does.
