A man must be excessively stupid, as well as uncharitable, who believes that there is no virtue but on his own side, and that there are not men as honest as himself who may differ from him in political principles.

As for the quote above, it can be said of religions as well, not just politics. Somewhere, there are Stonemasons that worship Allah in a peaceful way, just trying to get by, just trying to love their kids, and not ever once thinking about me and my religion.

Jus' an observation.

The Thirty-Six Stratagems

The Thirty-Six Stratagems are divided into a preface, six chapters containing six stratagems each, and an afterword that was incomplete with missing text. The first three chapters generally describe tactics for use in advantageous situations, whereas the last three chapters contain stratagems that are more suitable for disadvantageous situations. The original text of the Thirty-Six Stratagems has a laconic style that is common to Classical Chinese. Each proverb is accompanied by a short comment, no longer than a sentence or two, that explains how said proverb is applicable to military tactics. These 36 Chinese proverbs are related to 36 battle scenarios in Chinese history and folklore, predominantly of the Warring States Period and the Three Kingdoms Period.

Mmmmmm good stuff.

Happy Mother's Day to all the LGF moms. I celebrated today, but maybe my hubby will celebrate with me tomorrow. I had a great day, Italian food, funky shops, etc., and we were headed to the Farmer's Market when my daughter started talking about one of her elderly crime victims who has MS and recently diagnosed with cancer. My daughter has paid, out of pocket, for this lady to have a room to live in, in the past, even though daughter represents the county. I told her to forget the Farmer's Market and I met the lady on a corner of Hollywood Blvd. It was a meaningful Mother's Day and I loved it. We spent an hour there.

Am I a lib?

39 Vicious Babushka  Sat, May 9, 2009 11:40:30pm

Normally I'm asleep at this time.

I owe a lot to my mom. In fact she makes me feel like crap. she's always telling me "You're a genius! You're a genius!" because at 13 I took a Mensa test and scored an IQ of 159. The reason I feel like crap is that I never lived up to that Mensa score, instead I rebelled against my upbringing, ran away to Israel, married a Jew (who also rebelled against his upbringing) and together we made 9 kids, and they made 22 grandkids (more on the way).

Even though I earned a B.S. degree in Mathematics and Computer Science, and worked for 20 years in the automotive industry, at an assortment of contract jobs at GM and Ford, I never accomplished an actual Career. Now there are no jobs to be had in the Detroit area, so I founded the Zionist Mall and get seasonal checks. I feel like absolute crap for not living up to my mother's hopes and dreams of what I was supposed to accomplish.

Yeah, I actually get a Zionist check! I distribute it among my 9 Jewish children and 22 grandchildren.

But I can't get rid of the feeling that I have disappointed my mother with my lack of great accomplishments in life. My sister has accomplished even less, but she is a MOONBAT, married to a non-Jew, her only child is gay, so that earns her points. Also, she insulted my son, an IDF vet, for "persecuting Palestinian children" whatever that means.

“Terrible” Treasury Auction Exposes Hole in Obama Econ Plan

The U.S. Treasury auction of long-term bonds on Thursday was “terrible”, in the words of one Wall Street economist, with the rate on the 30 year bond jumping from 4.1 to 4.3 percent. This is just the first sign that the debt-based Obama economic stimulus plan is about to become a major drag on the recovery, just as expected.

The economic news is not all bad. We are seeing signs the rate of contraction is abating quickly, promising a bottom to the recession sometime this summer as many forecasters have expected. But therein lies another piece of the interest rate puzzle, and the trouble ahead.

There are two critical consequences to the economy stabilizing. The first is that the massive liquidity injected into credit markets by the Federal Reserve and central banks around the world transforms from economic medicine to inflationary heroin. Central banks are going to face a difficult task of extracting the excess liquidity before inflation soars and without causing another recession. Doubt about the fight against soaring inflation means higher inflation premiums in interest rates.

The second dangerous consequence is that President Obama is on course to double the national debt in just four years. After years of complaining about annual deficits of $300 billion or $400 billion and their effects on interest rates, liberal commentators are suddenly silent now that the deficit is heading toward $2 trillion under a liberal administration. But now the vaunted “crowding out” effect from government borrowing is almost a certainty, as are the resulting higher interest rates.

Healing financial markets and a stabilizing economy generally translate into higher interest rates for long-term, high-quality bonds like 30-year Treasuries. The effect of the projected massive government borrowing, however, is to drive interest rates as much as a full percentage point higher yet. This will mean higher interest rates for consumer loans, mortgage loans, business loans, etc. Instead of a 6.5 percent mortgage rate, home buyers will face a 7.5 percent rate. The debt-based Obama economic stimulus plan is about to become a major drag on the recovery, just as expected.

The release of the bank stress tests the same day and the expectation that credit markets would be quickly tapped by the banks to make up any capital deficiencies are certainly extenuating circumstances as we interpret the spike in Treasury rates. Even so, the Treasury auction signals real trouble ahead.

• The 32nd annniversary of the opening of Star Wars
• Frank Oz's 65th birthday (puppeteer who operated Yoda in Empire Strikes Back)
• Dixie Carter's 70th birthday
• The 48th anniversary of John Kennedy's speech in which he intended to put a man on the moon by the end of the decade

I still remember the day before a MacWorld years ago. In the Apple Store, a Mac Tower (similar to the modern Mac Pro) appeared, with amazing (for the time) capabilities, including two big shockers – it was a 64-bit system, which was made possible by Intel chips.

Rumors flew around that night – Had Apple been hacked as a joke? Did someone screw up? Was this even real?

The following day, at MacWorld, Jobs joked about how "some of you may have seen" this new machine added to the Apple Store, and described it, even though everyone had it effectively memorized. He then said, "Let me clear up any misconceptions about this here and now . . . IT'S TRUE!"

What they're trying to do with the new Star Trek movie is to reboot the franchise, bring it up to date, make it more interesting to those who have never given Star Trek a second thought, and bring more fans and more potential into it.

It's kind of akin to what the James Bond people were trying to do with the recent "Casino Royale".

Interesting Trek review:

New 'Star Trek' Movie is Bland, Not Bold
by Scott Holleran (May 7, 2009)

As a reset for Paramount’s popular series, the new Star Trek movie, opening this weekend and directed by J.J. Abrams, is disappointing. The original NBC television series was an intelligently written program which put highly individualized characters into often philosophically driven plots and this effort doesn’t come close to measuring up. That said, at least Star Trek has a coherent plot, which is rare. There are no major missteps.

The plot is formulaic, characters are too broad, and the conflict is the stuff of cable reruns. Playing in IMAX theaters (where I saw it), Star Trek contains the requisite action and plot progression but it doesn’t have what it takes for a franchise reboot.

Previous movies are mixed, but the TV series kept things simple, with the bridge of the U.S.S. Enterprise as the focal point, her international crew poised for action in a clear hierarchy and conflict resolution as the primary plot purpose. Here, we get twin tracks of expository set-up—Kirk and Spock—and it takes too long, wanders too wide, and emphasizes personalities instead of developing dramatic tension. The Enterprise is an egalitarian gathering place where the crew stands around trying to rule by consensus.

Kirk is a playboy, Spock is tortured and everyone sounds like they’re reading from a script. The character Uhura is expanded at the expense of Bones. Sulu, Chekhov and Scott are all there (Sulu fares best) and Bruce Greenwood is added as Kirk’s mentor. Some scenes, such as an elevator scene with Spock, are well done, but soon it’s back to the banal. Overbearing music, jerky camera shots, and a Jurassic Park rip-off burden the heavy load and it is hard to get excited about an evil Romulan—who, it is implied, has a point—on the warpath. Finally, Star Trek urges us to abandon reason and act on faith, a bad message you can get from any TV preacher or member of Congress (and, with both advocating religious statism, it’s hard to tell them apart). Many readers are going to see it anyway, but the new Star Trek, while not a bust, is as blurry as its poster.

re: #125 buzzsawmonkey

I observed here a few weeks ago that cell phones (and the public conversations which people make on them), such things as FaceBook and MySpace (on which people post all manner of personal information), and the like are playing hell with the very concept of privacy.

The danger of that is that liberty is dependent on privacy. The Fourth Amendment strictures against the government conducting unreasonable searches and seizures is predicated on the fact that your life is private, and the government does not have the right to pry into it without special authorization. But if you are yelling your private business into a cell phone, or posting your private business on your MySpace page, that is public--and you have already consented to making it public. A warrant? Who needs it? You've already put stuff out there for everyone, including the government, to see.

People are going to wake up in a few years to the fact that they have voluntarily consented to living in a fishbowl; that privacy no longer exists; and that therefore the greatest Constitutional bulwarks against government interference in personal affairs has been rendered null by their own actions.

The telescreens in 1984, in which the government was able to spy on people's activities, do not exist; they are not necessary. We are building our own telescreens, and paying for the privilege.

It would be interesting to start a gossip site that told all about not celebrities, but rather everyday people, just from what you overheard from them while they talked on their cellphone in areas where they could not reasonably expect any privacy.

If something like that had any success, you can bet that would shake people up!

I am surprised at how common my married name is. I thought I got rid of that problem along with my maiden name.

Yep - another math whiz! I seem to have a somewhat "brainy" name.

Among the physicists who worked on the Atomic Bomb, there was actually a sub-group of them that were referred to by my last name, because they'd all learned physics from my grandfather!

I'm astonished at the number of references I've seen to him in books on the Atomic Bomb and/or WWII.

SERE School is hardly basic training for all Military. In my 2.5 years on Bragg training various units in Combat readiness I was typically the only person in any of the units I was temporarily assigned to who had attended SERE school. Your more likely to have attended if your in a Combat or Spec ops unit. Most pilots go thru it as well due to higher rate of capture.

re: #289 Killian Bundy

If you read the actual Times (UK) article:

Barack Obama to walk in footsteps of uncle who helped free Buchenwald

[..] Thomas Steg, spokesman for the German Government, said that Mr Obama might visit “historical places that in the widest sense are related to the different aspects of World War Two — destruction and rebuilding, extermination and the breakdown of civilisation”, as well as places which have “biographical references” for his family.

[...]But he will be aware of the sensibilities of his German hosts before the D-Day commemoration and by travelling to Dresden — a city destroyed by ferocious Allied bombing in February 1945 — Mr Obama will also acknowledge how Germany suffered during the Second World War.[...]

Discussing how Germans too suffered in WWII seems quite appropriate. I know from living in Japan that one of their bug-a-boos is how their own country suffered in WWII (this being used as an argument about how foolish it was for their country to have attacked the West.) Germans have a more thoughtful outlook on WWII, I believe, and understand that their predecessors are directly responsible for great suffering in WWII and thus don't hold the grudges the Japanese do.

In other words, I fail to see what the outrage really is about, except that Gatewaypundit, as usual, needs something about which to ventilate.

As someone who rarely watches American"news programs" I think that the overnight thread statement might be pondered (if indeed they are capable?) by the likes of Hannity,O'Reilly,Olbermann and the prize buffoon
Glenn Beck.
At one time I used to look forward to Ted Koppel (as erudite a news analyst as one could possibly imagine).
He seems to have been replaced by a plethora of morons.(I saw Richard Dawkins laughing at O'Reilly's bombast;as he sought to "crowd out" a person who mighty conceivably make him look a fool.).
Multi lingual Ted seemed at home with any interviewee and was unafraid to use expressions like "disingenuous"when he had clearly demonstrated the same.
It seems that in this area, "dumbing down"is most clearly demonstrated.
I stand, of course ,to be corrected.

re: #321 MandyManners

In my understanding of "civilization", Western Civilization did not breakdown during WWII (the actual events or the era.) Just because local morality becomes evil, for a time, doesn't mean the whole civilization has failed.

My suspicion is that President Obama will use the occasion to equate "civilization" with the League of Nations, and by "breakdown" will expound on how the LoN failed to prevent WWII, and thus our international organizations today should be strengthened in order to prevent the next world war.

That is just my guess on what he will say, but it is coherent with the overall theme (= strengthening international organizations) of the theoreticians that have influence over his foreign policy.

As for the exterminations of Jews, Gypsies, etc., I really don't think that President Obama will have any intent or action to create some revisionist history.

Yeah He will reconize German suffering, but will he recognize all the suffering of certain populations within Germany by the Nazi Party? I highly doubt it. Obama is a bootlicking apoligist and I don't put it past him to apoligize to the German's for US atrocities during WW2. He has shown a willingness to apoligize to tyrants while ignoring the victim of their tyranny.

The MSM is still drooling over the O's.

Here is Sally Quinn from WaPo today:

"May I change the subject," said a prominent Washington theologian at a recent dinner. The conversation had been high-minded -- religion, philosophy, the nature of evil. "I'd like to talk about Michelle Obama's arms," he said.

He is a big fan of those arms. We then began a discussion about the significance of the first lady's arms. Actually, it turned out to be equally serious. Michelle Obama's arms, we determined, were transformational. Her arms are representative of a new kind of woman: young, strong, vigorous, intelligent, accomplished, sexual, powerful, embracing and, most of all, loving.

Today is Mother's Day. Today we should celebrate Michelle Obama's arms as the arms of a mother.

Michelle Obama's arms, we determined, were transformational. Her arms are representative of a new kind of woman: young, strong, vigorous, intelligent, accomplished, sexual, powerful, embracing and, most of all, loving.

Quinn has lost her fucking mind.

It gets worse.

She has come under attack for exposing her arms. They are toned and muscular, burnished and beautiful. That has to be threatening to some. For some men, often, a strong woman makes them feel diminished. For some feminists, the idea of an educated woman not taking on a full-time serious job is a frightening throwback.

re: #343 Teacake!

Why is he even going there? Just to give a speech? Why not save a lot of jet fuel and other green conscious things and just do this over the air?

As a practical matter, he's trying to build coalitions in Europe in order to get them to commit more troops to Afghanistan, and quite possibly to get them to take more than a single Gitmo releasee. I am beginning to suspect that he will also be angling for military aid in Iraq, where news of our impending withdrawal is having the predictable negative effects, with Iran overtly violating the northern border and bombings once again on the rise.

Chances of success? Near zero; he doesn't seem to grok the long-standing, almost genetic strain of anti-Americanism and xenophobia that permeate European thought, and probably never will.

371 Lincolntf  Sun, May 10, 2009 6:06:05am

Morning all.
Front page of the local paper had two large stories on it. One involving the violence in Pakistan, the other regarding the violence in Afghanistan. I used to hate these articles because they invariably had 37 mentions of the "Bush Administration" and at least a dozen quotes from "Human Rights" officials condemning America for either action or inaction. Today's stories included zero references to Obama, and only one "unnamed official" saying that an independent commission should be set up to study the situations. My, how the world has "changed" in just a few short months.

re: #354 MandyManners

“In 2010, Arlen Specter will seek re-election to the United States Senate,” the site now says in the first paragraph. “With his unsurpassed record of support for medical research, helping to return Senator Specter to the Senate is a powerful statement on behalf of those suffering with disease. The purpose of this web site is to encourage support for Senator Specter's mission to improve America's health by helping assure Senator Specter's re-election.”

Does this indicate he's gonna' support FCBBHO's efforts to nationalize medicine?

Bolshii Slovos. You won't respond thoughtfully or address points made, so up yours. You're a blowhard, Sal, a pompous pinhead with a mind warped by standing on the University too long, sucking up all that Marxist thought without critically examining where it comes from and how it came to be there. I've seen your list of publications, and it's not impressive--the putative philosopher's version of the vanity press. You throw big words around until I'm convinced that your spell-checker is really an auto- thesaurus, but you obfuscate rather than illuminate. That crap may fly in the philosopher's vanity press, where quality of writing seems to be measured with a ruler, minus the sum of CHR$(32), but I am not impressed by the appeal to authority. I made a thoughtful case, you appealed to authority. The difference between you and a bunch of other self-important, condescending windbags is that I like the other ones.

I DID effectively address your points, which is why you are now reduced to resorting to illegitimate ad hominems.

And the list of people and publications I reference are the very ones that originally outlined the systems in question - Hitler's Mein Kampf for nazism and Marx's Das Kapital and Communist Manifesto for communism. To which I might add Jon Stuart Mill's On Liberty for liberalism and Edmund Burke's Reflections on the Revolution in France for conservatism.

Why am I not surprised to discern a strain of anti-intellectualism in your post? Resentful much?

You once told me who he is but, I've forgotten.

The actor is Ian Richardson, and I have appropriated his likeness for his portrayal of fictional British Prime Minister Francis Urguhart ("F.U.") in a masterful trio of miniseries which we Yanks were lucky enough to appropriate from the Beeb (I think).

House of Cards, To Play the King, The Final Cut. The books are good, and though the (subsequent) TV versions differ in some regards from the books, for me it is Richardson's performance that "crowns" the whole thing.

Am I a lib?

No, and neither is your daughter.

If your brand of intellectualism consists mostly of citing other peoples' works in discussion, then yes, I absolutely detest that sort of University politics, crotch-sniffing, name-dropping "intellectualism".

Actually, although I, like anyone else who doesn't wanna waste time purposelessly reinventing the wheel, stand on others' shoulders to see further (now slam Isaac Newton for originating that phrase, if you must), I also refuse to write an article unless I can say something original, and go beyond what has been said before. Otherwise, what's the point?

It's a weakness of mine, I'll admit, but the sneering superiority of those educated far beyond their faculties of critical thinking just sets me off. That is not necessarily you; I'm just answering your question.

Well, since I've also tutored logic at the university level, and have authored a paper on the subject, I suppose I just might possess a certain small modicum of critical thinking skills.

PS: an ample vocabulary is a GOOD thing. The more tools one has in one's linguistic toolbox, the better for precise and concise self-expression. Rather than assuming the ignorance of others and writing down to them, I ask that they read up to me. And if they learn new words on the process, well that's just gravy.

Seattle artist paints women's "floral essences," not their likenesses

Working from a little studio on Lake Union, Blehert claims that after a few moments in a woman's company, an image of her essence comes to him, and he translates the impressionistic picture into acrylic — often unaware of the type of flower he's created.

How often were his comments aimed at Pres. Clinton?

Cheney's not at correspondents' dinner, but Obama lands punches

The Republican party was a favorite target for Obama, speaking at the annual White House Correspondents' Association dinner.

Former Vice President Dick Cheney couldn't make the dinner, Obama joked, because he was writing his memoir, "How to Shoot Friends and Interrogate People." It was a reference to Cheney's support of harsh interrogation techniques and his accidental shooting of a hunting companion

Detained Myanmar opposition leader on IV drip

Myanmar's detained opposition leader, Aung San Suu Kyi, has difficulty eating and has been taking fluids intravenously, her party said Sunday, calling for the military government to allow a doctor to see the Nobel laureate.

Suu Kyi's primary physician was detained for questioning by the authorities Thursday after an American was arrested after allegedly sneaking into her closely guarded home and staying there for more than two days. Another doctor was permitted Friday to see the 63-year-old Suu Kyi, who is rarely allowed to leave the compound where she is under house arrest.

But the doctor's request for a follow-up visit on Saturday was rejected, said a spokesman for Suu Kyi's National League for Democracy.

Did you see him in "Tinker, Tailor, Soldier, Spy"?

re: #564 realwest

Good morning again, Walter! How was attendance last night?

At about 100, which is good. We've been averaging 70-80's on Fridays, 100 plus (or just about sold out) on Saturday's and our Sundays have been soft with about 40-50. But, all in all, those figures are good. And this run is 7 weeks, not our usual 6 weeks.

We do 7 different shows a year, and pepper in concerts and special events (we do rentals), and each show normally runs 6 weekends.

Next year we are cutting that down to 6 shows, but extending the runs to 7 and 8 weeks. That will save us about 15 thousand dollars, which is the nominal cost to mount a show.

I think we have the busiest schedule of any of the 120 seat theatre's in the area.

America welcomes immigration, but not an attack on our sovereignty & strain on our educational & health resources as well as our penal system.
Many employers just love paying less than minimum wage & letting the taxpayer pick up the benefits. The Democrats know that changing the demographics will ensure their elections. People who question all of this are simply labeled racist or Xenophobic.

Legal rat's nest that would possibly create more problems than it solves. By definition, a POW attains that status through a formal declaration of war which is levied by Congress against a sovereign state or collection of such states. There simply isn't any current legal status defined that fits the current situation, which is a struggle against an ideology with no definite location.

Waiving the restriction on deporting them to their home countries if those countries seems like a better route to follow. After all, none I'm aware of is claiming they left those countries out of fear of torture; and it's difficult to see how US imprisonment would create such a possibility.

A third possibility is to find some other country willing to accept them. So far, no luck at all on that front. But I suspect 0's trip back to Germany is an attempt to drum up support for that option, along with a commitment for more troops in Afghanistan. I suspect such attempts are a waste of time, myself, but 0 needs to learn that form himself, perhaps.

Why not deport them to someplace that won't execute them?

Illegal combatants bear arms against US Soldiers captured on the battlefield, and The One wants to release them here because they would be tortured and executed when they got home. So we release them into our civilian population.

A idea so friggin' beyond stupid only a pseudo intellectual could love it.

If one of those bastards kills a US civilian, I would hope Obama gets impeached and removed from Office before the body is cold.

Shear Insanity.

The blogger, Stephan Sharkansky of Sound Politics who just won $250,000 in a public disclosure suit over the '04 election discovered a couple hundred Canada's registered to vote, and voting in WA.

Just have them come over the border, register, and vote absentee from Mexico.

And I would hazard a guess most of the voting Canadians balloted for Gregoire.

It's a time honored tradition for kids to bring their mother breakfast in bed. But when this man let his kids try to cook breakfast, they set the kitchen on fire ... all the while mom is blissfully unaware upstairs. Oh sure, she heard "a commotion" but she thought the kids were arguing. Meanwhile, dad's rushing off to the hospital with badly burned hands. Remember Dads, on Mother's Day, only you can prevent kitchen fires.

If so, how can these folks come across the border (northern or southern) and register to vote?

Correct, citizenship is required to vote.

The (D)s need to cheat like hell to win.

Motor Voter, register when you get a drivers license, in WA the clerk is forbidden from asking for proof of citizenship. The application checks a box swearing on penalty of perjury they are citizens.

Motor voter was also the brain child of Cloward and Pivens, strange those two old radical Columbia profs of Obama (speculation) would be involved that little scheme.

Another requirement of citizenship, proficiency in the English language. Why the fuck are ballots in WA available in even languages.

Let illegal stay, or come across the border, register and vote with no checks. And the leftist dream of breaking down national sovereignty becomes a reality.

One is supposed to be a resident of the state one casts a ballot, but ACORN gets hundreds of college/university students to ballot both in their home state and in the state where they are going to school, legal doesn't mean diddly when one wants to win elections.

Each state has its own byzantine laws regarding voter eligibility, but as the '04 WA governor's election and the '08 presidential race show following the law is far less important than winning. Can't have the people resist the Left agenda, we don't know what's good for us.

A few months ago Paul Belien welcomed the BNP into the Counterjihad movement......

BNP want banned Ku Klux Klan leader back in Britain

The far-right British National Party is demanding a former Ku Klux Klan leader be allowed into Britain.

Home Secretary Jacqui Smith last week put former KKK grand wizard Stephen "Don" Black on a blacklist of "extremists".

Now BNP leader Nick Griffin has called on her to let Black in. Mr Griffin said: "The only people who can be kept out are those who inflict violence, which Don Black has not." In 1981, Black was found in possession of weapons and ammunition, and jailed for three years.

Mr Griffin - whose party wants the deportation of illegal immigrants - was photographed with the white supremacist in New Orleans in 2005 and Washington in 2006.

Anti-racist group Searchlight said: "Nick Griffin thinks hardworking Britons of Commonwealth descent should be kicked out, and the doors flung open to his lunatic Ku Klux Klan friends."

My point isn't how we hold them. It's more releasing the into the general population is insanity.

Two entirely different matters here. The problem with deportation has nothing to do with being in a state of war; it is a law (I'm fairly sure) forbidding deportation in cases where the deportee may face torture in the receiving country.

Yes, releasing them domestically strikes me a very bad solution. It's one that's being forced by law, however, rather than whim.

Congress could resolve this by passing a new law, or by issuing an explicit exemption to the existing one. I don't expect anything of the sort, Congress being populated by spineless weasels who won't attach their names to anything that might possibly create blowback down the road.

As I recall during the campaign it came out that she had been some sort of non official deal maker with arabs for quite some time. (?)

Not during the Bush Administration.

Actually, the article stated (as far as I recall) that she as well as countless other people cut strange deals with the arab big wigs all the time, ie Jessee Jackson, Farakon, people like that including her. I guess in today's world, rules and laws are made up on the spot. These people seem to just go over the head of Bush or whoever had legal rights to cut deals. Certainly Polosi didn't have a legal right to meet with the Syrian fellow.

Actually, I think that it is in China that they would be tortured, not Afghanistan. In Afghanistan, they would be more likely to do the torturing, if they are here to offer their services to the Taliban.
Not sure, haven't been following this closely--just working on recollection.

That actually is the point, that they would be tortured in China.

Well JCM, I have to say that those defending some of the detainees have one point going for them: they claim (with, iirc, some justification) that a number of detainees were NOT captured on the battlefield, but turned into our CIA or Military for the bounty on their heads by others in Afghanistan, simply because those turning 'em in belonged to different sects or were Hatfield/McCoy family fueds.
I do seem to recall that some detainees were released on that basis (but deported to Afghanistan).

I disagree with the left-wing asshole's premise:

First, let's be clear: President Obama and Sen. John McCain both pledged last year to close the Guantanamo facility because they recognized that the United States is governed by the rule of law and defined by our embrace of universal human rights. Indefinitely detaining individuals without charge violates the most basic principle of habeas corpus, greatly damages our international reputation, and fuels both terrorist recruitment and anti-American sentiment.

While closing Guantanamo would go a long way toward removing this stain on our national character, the decision to do so was the easy part. What to do with the detainees who remain of the more than 700 sent there since 2001 is much more difficult.

Let them go? - they will certainly return to their terrorist ways.
I guarantee it.
Keep them locked up? that in an of itself stems recruitment.

May 10 for me means 2 things:

1940: Nazi troops invaded Belgium, the Netherlands, and Luxemburg. The Netherlands hold out 3 days, Belgium 18 days, Luxemburg has no meaningful defense force: France is next.
also 1940: Winston Churchill appointed Prime Minister of the UK following the resignation of Neville Chamberlain

Yes, indeed. The German Blitzkrieg of May-June 1940 is a very interesting campaign to study. The initial German thrusts in into Belgium and The Netherlans were mainly a ruse, to draw Allied force north. The main thrust of 7 panzer divisions pushed through the Ardennes and pushed across the Meuse at Sedan, Dinant, and Monthereme.

Unfortunately, not a viable plan simply because the country they're going to wind up in has to accept them. We're not finding very many takers.

Strange disconnect there, we have to keep the ones no one wants and won't give up the ones countries do want.

Just wondering -- does Rommel's record for a single-day advance still stand?

I am not certain about that. For those who don't know: Erwin Rommel set a record for the single day advance of a division (7th Panzer Division) during the 1940 campaign. He set this record soon after the breakout from Dinant. While some have praised his feats during the campaign his corps commander, Hermman Hoth, criticized Rommel's action for not staying with the other panzer division in the corps (5 Panzer Div.).

The Russians did exactly that, making it look like the Germans could preempt the expected Russian offensive with a spoiling attack in northern Ukraine, while the main effort fell on the ill-prepared Army Group Center in Belarus. The subsequent operation saw AG Center utterly smashed and took the Red Army deep into Poland. In terms of real damage to German forces, Operation Bagration, not Operation Overlord, was the real decisive operation of June 1944.

Locally, Rep. Frank Wolf (R-VA) is saying no to the GITMO terrorists, and standing up to Obama's plan to shove them into our city. Wolf's office also held an overflowing jobs fair a couple days ago, which was a nice thing to do for Republicans tarred as the party of "NO".

Just say no to McCain--like Tom Davis, he quashed the idea of his bubba running against Moran in 2002, didn't want the bubba distraction.

He's a leftard, that's why.

I was under the impression that Bob's apolitical. Others attributed leanings to him which he publicly denied.
Could be wrong...

You know, I really like your guy Inhofe. I'm on his email list.

He's a steadfast consevative. If the Repubs ever get a senate majority back, he'll be one of the main leaders. Hopefully.

LOL! I once saw a video snippet of Stills and Dylan sitting backstage playin' and singing and Dylan smiled and Stills was so stunned he stopped playing, mouth agape!

Well, I ordered some shirts online from a "large women" store. The shirts arrived, THEY ARE HUMONGOUS! No way can I wear them, even for a bathrobe.

Fortunately a return auth. slip was included, so I can request a smaller size.

He's also just about the only seawall standing against the tide of "Global Climate Change".

That's nothing. I ordered some large women from an online shirt store, and THEY WERE TINY!

Sent 'em right back.

Bury ACORN.

If you bury an acorn, you grow an oak. Give it to the squirrels, instead.
/How do you catch a squirrel? Climb up a tree and act like a nut.

Toxicity?

Oh no! Far from it. I should have explained better. I just meant that's when the "surprise" happens. It actually went quite well!
