Happy Mother’s Day

Lifestyle • Views: 2,208

We wish a very happy and safe Mother’s Day to all LGF readers, and especially to the mothers, without whom none of us would be here.

The real religion of the world comes from women much more than from men - from mothers most of all, who carry the key of our souls in their bosoms.

I was blessed to be with my (last surviving) grandmother and my mother yesterday.

Today? I get to clean up the unholy mess in the kitchen from the breakfast they made me. Oh well, I'm getting spontaneous hugs.

Too bad, because it used to be big part of normal family life.

In 1960s Spain, women nursed in public, in front of their families, it didn't raise an eyebrow. La Leche League was everyone's daily routine.

Powell didn't just "leave the Republican Party", by his complicity with his best friend Richard Armitage in outing Valerie Plame's name and LYING about it for 3 years, Powell let Cheney and the entire Bush Administration twist in the wind for 3 years in War time.

Well, my mother is no longer with us, but she's still with me. She was a good woman who was my mentor and my friend. Not a day goes by that I do not think of her and I still strive to live by her example.

I watched her die and, during that process, she said to me "dying isn't the worst thing that happens to you, it's only the last". Her healthy and good humored outlook, even in the face of death, will always be with me and it has given me strength during some rough times of my own.

Happy Mother's Day, Mom, and thanks!

My Mother's Day has been great so far. Number 1 Daughter is on chat with me from Italy right now. Only Son called at 7:30 this morning (no, I was not awake); he also sent me a short story he wrote. I haven't read it yet because I know it will make me cry. Youngest Daughter wins the prize, however -- she brought me Krispy Kremes! Now we are getting ready to go see "Star Trek."

Happy Mother's Day to all the lizard moms, and to all the moms of lizards who raised great kids!

53 Mostly sane, most of the time.  Sun, May 10, 2009 10:03:32am

Can I tell my favorite story about my mother?

So I was woken up one Saturday morning during my teenage years by the sound of the radial saw. It will tell you what you need to know about my mother that I could not only identify the radial saw by sound, but I knew it was her.

I went downstairs to find the house full of dust, and my mother using the radial saw on a wall, high up against the ceiling. I waited until she turned it off, and asked, "Mom, what are you doing?"

"Oh, I thought I'd take out a wall."

I then asked a really, really stupid question, fully earning the snarky answer I received. "Does Dad know you're doing this?"

"No, I thought I'd surprise him."* She then picked up a sledgehammer and sunk it into the wall. "This is really therapeutic! Do you want to give it a try?"

To my everlasting regret, I didn't. I still kick myself for that. I love my mother.

*They had discussed it at length and checked to be sure it wasn't a bearing wall.

Powell was supposedly advising McCain's campaign, before he bailed and went radical. Amazing how Powell went wherever the paparazzi were, and the "cooler" parties.

Of course, Colin Powell may have been suckled at the breast of Jamaican fire & brimstone folks like Reverend Wright and Harry Belafonte, before grabbing hold of the American Dream.

Crude, and living up to at least the last part of your name.

Try this.

Ask a man which part of the female anatomy he likes best- if he says
1) Bosom - It means that he is amazed at the ability of a mother to nourish her child.
2) Hips - It means he is looking for a woman that is capable of bearing him children.
3) Womb - It means he is astounded at the ability of a woman to take his offering and turn it into a real live human.

Off to the movies with Mrs. and Little Hawk. Later all.

OT - This is probably going on in other cities and places across the country. We have a all Dem city government in Denver, and the state. Watch out for this. It may not seem important, but it is, very very important.

Why was public locked out of census meeting?

"We couldn't help but notice the irony surrounding actions of new Commerce Secretary Gary Locke when he was in Denver last week for a meeting. The secretary, speaking to a group that is working to raise public awareness about the importance of the 2010 census, actually closed the meeting to the public."

The reason should be quite obvious: The Dems were really planning how they would rig the census. They didn't want people catching wise.

This is a brief story about my Mom. She's 82 years old, stands about 5 feet tall and sometimes uses a walker. She lives in Brookline, MA, which is a predominantly Jewish neighborhood in Boston. During the gaza incursion in early January, there was a pro palestinian demonstration in her neighborhood (not at all provocative, right?). And my Mom walked up to one of the demonstrators and asked her "are you a muslim?" The woman asnwered "yes." And my little Mom then said "I hope they kill every last one of you."

Happy Mother's Day, Mom.

Heard wonderful Early Music from a group called Carmina (www.carmina.org) devoted to women this weekend:

Ave Maria by Jacques Arcadelt (1507-1568)
Beata es Virgo Maria by Giovanni Gabrieli (1554-1612)

There is also an all female group, Illuminare, that sings ancient pieces, including music written by medieval nuns.

Of course, anything such as a long run movie franchise is subject to future business considerations, so we'll have to see what happens.

It seems that today's popular culture seems to be nothing more than a reverberation of that of the Baby Boomers, updated to fit current times.

I loved Star Trek, and I plan on seeing the movie(s), but are there any original ideas out there in movieland? It seems to be that all of the really big blockbusters have their roots in Boomer culture.

I'm saying this as a Boomer and one who is familiar with that time, warts and all. While I enjoy a lot of this rehash, at some level, it's somewhat troubling.

Just my humble opinion.......

Speaking of Mother's Day:

Four people can't be with their mother today. That's because she was murdered by members of a communist political cult called the Symbionese Liberation Army in 1975. Her name was Myrna Opsahl.

Myrna Opsahl (born December 13, 1932 – died April 21, 1975) was a church worker, a mother of four, and a murder victim of the Symbionese Liberation Army. She died in April 1975 during a Carmichael, California bank robbery. Newspaper heiress and kidnapping/brainwashing victim Patty Hearst was the driver of the getaway car during this robbery.
Her death led to a lengthy campaign for justice, which finally in 2002 led to murder charges against Emily Harris, William Harris, Kathleen Soliah (a.k.a. Sara Jane Olson), Michael Bortin, and James Kilgore for the murder. Emily Harris admitted to firing the fatal shotgun blast, but claimed it was an accident.

You'll be happy to know that James Kilgore, who participated in the murder robbery, and then committed a litany of other heinous crimes, including making pipes bombs, forging passports, and then fleeing from justice for 27 years -- just got out of jail after serving measly SIX YEARS:

The last captured member of the notorious 1970s-era Symbionese Liberation Army has been released from a California prison.

Corrections spokesman Oscar Hidalgo said James William Kilgore was paroled Sunday from the High Desert State Prison in northeastern California.

Kilgore completed a six-year sentence for the murder of suburban Sacramento housewife Myrna Opsahl during an April 1975 bank robbery.

Kilgore was arrested in 2002 in Cape Town, South Africa, after nearly three decades on the run.

Happy Mother's Day!

Abbot and Costello, The Marx Brothers, Olsen and Johnson, Laurel and Hardy, The Universal monster movies, Francis the Talking Mule, Blondie and Dagwood movies, and many of these moved on to TV (and started on radio).

And even before that, Sherlock Holmes books and of course, many book series, the Hardy Boys, Nancy Drew and I could go on and on.

It was worth the special bus trip to and from the city.

We take turns every year re Mothers Day being on Saturday or Sunday, and yesterday it was our turn for the Saturday celebration, and today the kids are with their in-laws. Next year we reverse. So far, it works beautifully! ;) We do it for all the holidays. But with Mothers Day and Fathers Day? This year Fathers Day will be on Sunday for us...

Maybe all of this discussion of succeeding generational culture being echos of the revious one brings us back to the point of the original point of the thread; our mothers.

Honoring the past, while attempting to correct its foibles, is really the task at hand. It's not always easy, but it's our job. Discarding the past entirely, due to its imperfections, forces us to begin again. Bringing the wisdom that was attained by past generations into the present and augmenting it with the wisdom that we can achieve, here and now, is the only practical option.

Happy Mother's Day, Lizards. Let us all thank the previous generation(s) for leaving us the country that we now enjoy and may we endeavor to leave an even better one to the next generation.

re: #188 Soona'

The "Baby Boomer" generation, as far as movies are concerned, was the last generation that had an imagination.

Maybe because it was the last generation where artists/filmmakers followed their vision, and created their works, and it was sink or swim.  I think Clint Eastwood is perhaps the last of those old-time artists, people who have an idea and follow it through and make what they want to make.

Instead (and I blame Steven Spielberg for this, though I'm not sure he was the absolutely first one) we have films created by committee, by focus groups and market analysis, geared to merchandizing and market share rather than entertainment and quality story lines, etc.  Tony Randall on the Tonight Show, shortly before he died, said he never went to the movies anymore because they didn't have story lines, just special effects.  I can think of several movies out right now, or coming out shortly (the new Transformers movie, or GI Joe) which seem to be very short on plot but long on CGI.

}:)     [Where are the artists?  We already have too many merchandizers.]
