Facebook Welcomes Holocaust Deniers, Bans Breast Feeding

There’s something rotten at Facebook: Jew Haters Welcome At Facebook, As Long As They Aren’t Lactating.

Way more countries have laws against holocaust denial (11 or so) than breast feeding (0), but guess which one is banned on Facebook? That’s right. Pictures of breast feeding babies are indecent, so they’re a no go.

But Holocaust denial is totally cool because it fosters open discussion. Facebook wants to “be a place where people can discuss all kinds of ideas, including controversial ones.” Even, apparently, the discussion of the idea that someone might be a “N-gger faggot, Jew nosed c-nt.” That’s just one of many hateful messages I found written on a Holocaust denial site on Facebook.

Brian Cuban is making the removal of these sites a personal mission. He’s arguing the law. He’s arguing terms of service. He’s arguing common sense and decency. These groups are clearly little more than excuses to spew hatred towards Jews, and Facebook is too timid to do anything about it. The first amendment doesn’t apply to private companies. So why is Facebook so willing to take a stand when it comes to hungry babies, but won’t do a damn thing when it comes to the Holocaust?

Because they’re cowards.

Ebay had problems with this stuff too. People are not even allowed to sell WW2 Nazi gear to collectors in some EU countries. I have a feeling facebook will need to regulate that stuff if they don't want to end up in EU courts. The law aside...it's vulgar to allow it when you do not have to.

The breastfeeding "ban" has been blown way out of proportion.

They remove photos that contain nudity, not necessarilly because they depict breastfeeding.

They didn't remove these:

re: #51 AMER1CAN

Why look what we have here! Facebook executives read the blogs!

Some Holocaust denial groups disappear from Facebook

Following a concerted campaign by Dallas attorney, Brian Cuban, brother of entrepreneur Mark Cuban, Facebook appears to have begun to take down some of the Holocaust denial groups about which Brian Cuban complained.

Brian Cuban pointed to five specific groups.

As of 8:30 a.m. PDT Monday, "Holocaust: A Series of Lies", "Holohoax," and "Holocaust is a Myth" were still live.

However, "Based on the facts...there was no Holocaust" and "Holocaust is a Holohoax" appear to have been taken down.

TechCrunch on Monday also weighed in on the issue, with a headline echoing last week's Q&A with Facebook spokesperson, Barry Schnitt here at Technically Incorrect.

In the Q&A, Schnitt drew a distinction between Holocaust denial and another recent Facebook controversy, images of breastfeeding. Michael Arrington's headline puts it in stark terms: "Jew Haters are Welcome at Facebook as Long as they Aren't Lactating."

Well, and what about the numerous Facebook groups titled "Fuck Islam", the largest of which currently has almost 5,000 members? Should they be banned?

Just sayin'.

And then there are these:

Fuck Racism
Fuck Nationalism
Fuck Christianity
Fuck Judaism
Fuck Hinduism
Fuck Catholicism
Fuck Mormonism
Fuck Scientology
Fuck Buddhism
Fuck Satanism
Fuck religion
Fuck Atheism

Which to ban, which to allow? My, my, it's tough having free speech.

66 PatriotLizardoid  Mon, May 11, 2009 12:21:11pm

re: #65 Cato the Elder

Good point, but I'll point to this blog as an illustration of my point. Charles does, and should, moderate his online community aggressively. There are things I am not allowed to say here, and that's fine with me. Yet I don't think LGF has hardly become a sanitized "PC" arena. Quite the contrary, I actually feel better posting here because I know that it will be pretty civil and people will think before they write.

I just don't think "free speech" can or should apply to private endeavors. Facebook (like this blog) should decide what it stands for (or against), and stand unequivocally.

re: #66 PatriotLizardoid

[...] I just don't think "free speech" can or should apply to private endeavors. Facebook (like this blog) should decide what it stands for (or against), and stand unequivocally.

Then it will sooner or later be forced into becoming a sanitized PC arena where anything in the least off-color or offensive to someone, somewhere will be banned.

The point is I could sign on to "ruck facism", "nuck fationalism", "scuck Fientology" and plenty of other "xuck FYZ" groups, but as a Catholic I'm offended by the "cuck Fatholicism" one. Yet I feel I have to tolerate it. If I don't, and I put up a mockery group called "ruck Fush Limbaugh", I can't expect it to remain there.

Yes, I know Holocaust denial is banned in X countries. Not in the US, though. Facebook will probably have to monitor international access accordingly. Or something equally complicated and messy.

I'm for letting the Holocaust deniers say whatever they want. Ditto Muslims. Ditto Pamela Geller. Ditto Robert Spencer. Sunlight is the best disinfectant.

Well it's still the most popular social networking sites. So what happens there really matters.

Try a search for pro- and con- islam groups there. You will see that there are groups dedicated to eradicating and closing down all anti-islam groups (they state that 40.000 votes are needed to close down any group and they do this with all anti-islam groups that pop up). These flash-groups have more than 200.000 members and they can actually make a difference as to what groups people are able to join.

It's very difficult to find any anti-islamic groups in FB.

I can understand their position. It's very hard to define acceptable vs unacceptable speech, and the worst that unrestricted speech tends to cause is a cesspool of nutjobs calling each other names. But nudity is easier to define, and breastfeeding is one of the few grey areas. If you don't restrict nudity then you start to get arguments over salacious vs non-salacious images, and pretty soon you've got people using Facebook to swap pornography.

#62 has it spot on. Facebook has every bit as much a right to be anti-breastfeeding and pro-Judenhass, as Charles has to run YouTube videos of (fair-use) jazz band concerts, and articles about Nazis and Saudis (if I'm not being overly redundant). If Facebook want to be Stormfront For Prudes!TM, they're welcome to that niche market.

We are likewise free to castigate them for it.

At any rate, Facebook seems to understand that the antiSemitism over there isn't helping its brand, and is laying about with its ban stick. But if they're going after the easy targets like neo-nazi misfits from Idaho, and not bothering with Hezbollah groupies, that's not good enough, and interested lizards need to pursue it.

(I'm thinking of activating my dormant Facebook account over this...)

78 Render  Mon, May 11, 2009 4:42:19pm

"Not ignoring the deniers does not mean engaging them in discussion or debate. In fact, it means not doing that. We cannot debate them for two reasons, one strategic and the other tactical. As we have repeatedly seen, the deniers long to be seen as the “other” side. Engaging them in discussion makes them exactly that. Second, they are contemptuous of the very tools that shape any honest debate: truth and reason. Debating them would be like trying to nail jelly to a wall."

Okay, I'm on Facebook and I searched "Palestine intifada". I got 87 matches. The spanish language one against Israeli "fascismo" has 1,831 members.

I do not find anyone posing with an AK-47. I find instead the usual gaggle of lowlifes one used to dig up on MySpace: young ladies kissing each other in a bar, pictures of people getting drunk in a bar, pictures of underclothed men hoping someone will notice them, pictures of womens' cleavage, pictures of men in mohawks; and if it's not pictures of people, it's pictures of the Happy Bunny, pictures of Homer Simpson, pictures of young Fidel Castro, pictures of little dogs, pictures of the hammer-n-sickle etc etc etc.

It's basically "cool" to be a murderous antiSemite these days worldwide, and so all the insecure kids of the world are joining these groups.

I have a hard time believing that a networking
site founded by a Zuckerberg and a Moskovitz has any ulterior motives
against Jews.

Their new COO is a Sandberg

They've got 200 million users. Going about deciding
where to draw the line on content, and then actually
implementing procedures to block or delete such groups,
is a huge undertaking.

As was posted on LGF a little while back, it's hardly
limited to anti-semetism. There's a facebook group advocating for the annihilation of the Turkish population,
so Istanbul can be restored to Constantinople.

81 Etaoin Shrdlu  Mon, May 11, 2009 5:46:10pm

I'm no Facebook fan, but their policies more or less parallel American law, in which Judenhass is political speech and Constitutionally protected, whereas pictures of boobies* are potentially pornography and not Constitutionally protected.

*Not to be confused with pictures of boobies.
Under the "unless they really want to" interpretation of "Congress shall make no law".

Fine, then the vile filth that regularly appears on Facebook is offensive and anti-social. It tears society apart instead of fostering any meaningful dialogue. You can defend it's constitutionality 'til tomorrow, but I liken it to a restaurant that serves dog sh-t on a bun. Anyone with an iota of good taste would never set foot in that establishment. Let the racist bastards have the site all to themselves. They can wallow in their own dog sh-t. If the free market simply ignores Facebook, it will soon disappear. Boycott Facebook.

One should make the distinction between an image of breastfeeding and holocaust denial. For starters, one is an image, and one is content. So first we make those distinctions.

Now, pornographic images are banned. No one is disputing any rules there. No need for a slippery slope. Everyone knows what's okay to post and what's not because images are visual and especially striking when you see pornographic images.

Content falls into a different category. Where does one draw the line to avoid the slippery slope?

Commonsense.

But that's never going to happen.

So we have to rely on other ways to drive out this type of idiot nonsense about holocaust denial. If having it out in the open for debate and so we can see all these idiots is the best way, then by all means, shine the light on them and hope they scatter.

I however think a different, more stringent approach should be used with cases such as holocaust denial. I don't entirely know what the best way is but I don't think Facebook has any obligation to allow these hate groups to roam their communities and use their services to encourage holocaust denial.

Kinda like an anti-US American, right? By the way, did anyone else read about some school in California called Montebello High School where they replaced the US flag with the Mexican flag and then underneath the Mex flag, placed the US flag upside down and then raised both? Where' Montebello?

I have to wonder about women who feel the need to showcase their breastfeeding on Facebook or Youtube or anywhere for that matter. In a park, on a bus, in real life in real time I can understand but on Facebook?
Go ahead call me a prude.

...And this is why I'm not on facebook.

Nazis and white nationalists are doing a hell of a job of infesting the internet with their lies. Look at what they've done at youtube.

(lots of idle time when you are unemployed, I suppose)

So you think there is no such thing as a Jewish anti-semite? Have you ever heard of Norman Finkelstein?

Yes, it's one big anti-jewish, jewish conspiracy over there at Facebook.

I mean...it's the most logical conclusion one can draw.
