Actually, I think it was Muslims who invented space travel, even before Mo and the flying pony.

It was stolen from them by the evil Jooos, who then sold it to the Great Satan.

Morning all. I almost tossed a shoe at the TV watching Fox TV just now. The "correspondents" were speculating as the why the space telescope was named Hubble. After a few seconds of head scratching, someone on the staff suggested it was named for the factory that built it. Ten minutes passed before someone corrected it to the astronomer, Edwin Hubble.

Pretty vapid bunch, no?

Hitch a few rail cars onto the space shuttle and take Congress for an extended space walk...no need to tether.

27 alegrias  Mon, May 11, 2009 11:54:44am

A scientist at the Smithsonian's National Air & Space Museum brought over Hubble Telescope pictures to our office and explained amazing things learned from these pictures, though there was a problem with its lens, back in the early 1990s.

And it will remain a great country. We've survived worse stuff than this and this we will survive as well. The American people make poor choices at times, but ultimately we always tend to pull our heads out of our collective asses and come together when it really counts.

I understand that they're going to film the actual Hubble repair spacewalks in 3D Imax for a future Imax movie. Anyone else know anything about that?

Pretty vapid bunch, no?

that's as bad as the CNN anchor last year asking one of the astronauts why they kept referring to 4 of the 7 shuttle astronauts as " rookies"
and was this some kind of hazing

and with a straight face the astronaut simply explained that they were called rookies since this was their first mission

37 rain of lead  Mon, May 11, 2009 11:56:42am

since this is a space weekend with star trek and now the shuttle
I am posting this
vows all starfleet captains should take

All critical data and software will be backed up in off-line storage.

A random alien's claims about his/her/its race's cultural values and attitudes will be given no more credence than a random human's claims about human cultural values and attitudes.

My crew shall be trained in the fine arts of tactical combat, such as dispersing assets, walking point, advance guards, flank guards, rear guards, etc.

I will not throw infantry into close-quarter combat with creatures of leviathan stature, but shall turn such affairs over to the artillery crew.

If my ship is whisked to the far side of the galaxy, leaving us with a seventy-year journey home, and a super-being offers to take us home instantly in exchange for having his baby, I'll agree and ask what we can get for two babies.

If anyone beams down and their personal communicator drops carrier, all life forms within ten meters of the last known location shall be beamed directly to the brig. A large well-armed security detail will be waiting.

The people in charge of Sick Bay, Engineering, and R&D will not be the only people staffing those functions, nor shall they accompany away teams.

I will not ask "What does God need with a space ship?" and then order a torpedo strike. I will order the torpedo strike first, and ponder theology on the trip home.

My people will be assigned duties commensurate with their skills. I will not task pilots with leading a ground assault, infiltrating enemy camps, etc.

If I board a derelict ship, and it appears that the former crew and passengers all died in some horrible fashion, I will immediately leave the ship, destroy it, and toss the wreckage into the nearest stellar object.

If I am in red alert status and discover that it was a false alarm, I will stay in red alert for a while before standing down.

Anyone I imprison will be stripped, scanned, and given a prison uniform. This will prevent them from assembling weapons from pieces hidden in their regular clothes.

Any crew member who begins to act strangely will be immediately relieved of duty and confined to the sick bay, pending a complete screening to determine if their personality has been subverted.

I will not let the Whiz Kid conduct research aboard my ship. If he's got a theory that he's itching to test, I will deposit him on an uninhabited planet in friendly space, and make sure that I'm out of the system before he's done unpacking.

I will not depart the starbase unless my complement of Marines are on board.

I will hold repel-boarders drills on my ship. These drills will be held at random hours so that everyone learns what they're supposed to be doing, no matter what the circumstances.

My junior officers will be notified that Academy cadets cannot be field-commissioned, and should they come upon a ship crewed entirely by such, they will immediately take command and return them to where they can receive adult supervision.

I will never send the infantry down on missions that are better suited for orbital bombardment.

If the issued zap guns have "stun" and "kill" modes, they will be set to the former only when the user is about to fire at something that is wanted alive.

If my opponent can adapt to various forms of attack, rendering them useless, I will use some imagination and start attacking in as many radically different ways as possible.

My standing orders will allow the man I leave in charge of the bridge to raise shields and return fire if the ship is attacked while I am not on the bridge.

Not many people can make a claim like this:

After Hubble's discovery was published, Albert Einstein abandoned his work on the cosmological constant (which he had designed to allow for a static solution to his equations). He later termed this work his "greatest blunder" since the assumption of a static universe had prevented him from predicting the expanding universe. Einstein made a famous trip to Mount Wilson in 1931 to thank Hubble for providing the observational basis for modern cosmology. However, as a testament to Einstein's genius, the cosmological constant has actually come back in recent decades as a hypothesis for dark energy.

A joke about Rahm not being used to adding "Day" to "Mother".

Sorry, don't get the Ron Burgundy reference.

No one forces me to watch Fox's attractive anchors, it is of my own free will!

Dems are no doubt trying to figure out how to use NASA for propaganda photos--here's the shuttle over North Korea's dark skyline; here's the shuttle over Hugo Chavez' petroleum palace (hey, what's Joe Kennedy--Joe4Oil-- doing there in the picture?); here's the shuttle over Bashir al Assad's lovely palace where lately John Kerry, Ben Nelson and I stayed; etc.

re: #31 Cheesehead

I remember in the sixties when I was in grade school, the teachers (nuns) would wheel an old black & white TV into the classroom when a launch was occurring. Loved it then and love it now.
I understand that they're going to film the actual Hubble repair spacewalks in 3D Imax for a future Imax movie. Anyone else know anything about that?

I remember seeing the Challenger disaster live in school. What stands out to me, even to this day, is the guy reading telemetry. At the beginning, he is reading height downrange distance data normally. After the explosion/breakup he continues reading for a good while, the downrange number not changing, and the altitude number decreasing. He of course is just looking his display/printout and not at a tv camera of the launch. After several seconds of this, he says something like "We have a malfunction" probably thinking his radar system was out of wack. This probably qualifies as the understatement of the year...

NASA is the one government agency that seems to exceed their mandate when it comes to equipment. Martian rovers still working, etc.

I can't wait for more Hubble pics, they are very awe-inspiring and humbling.

the hubble has been plagued with problems. first the lenses were not cut right.
i heard this is a dangerous mission. those people repairing the craft are handling
very sharp parts. also i heard and do not know for a fact, that another shuttle is
standing by in case there are problems. does any one know if that is true. jdk

re: #57 Idle Drifter

I watched it live via NASA TV. I hate to be a killjoy but this is something I'd like to see in person on the ground especially at night if possible though I'd still enjoy a day launch. To me it was liken to watching fireworks on TV, it just isn't the same experience. This is on my list of things to do in life.

I've seen a night launch. It's one of the Great Spectacles. It was an ISS supply run, so they were launching to the North and we didn't get the whole sound effects. But the light is absolutely tremendous. On ascent, it turns a 60-degree chunk of the sky daylight blue. Incredible. Glorious.

I hope they don't need STS 400 (for obvious safety reason of the crew and a purely selfish one), because the family and I are driving down from Ohio to see specifically the launch of STS127 on Sat 6/13 at 7:30 am.

I cannot wait to see the launch!

Some Scientists claim that hydrogen, because it is so plentiful, is the basic building block of the universe. I dispute that. I say there is more stupidity than hydrogen, and that is the basic building block of the universe.
