Pope Walks Out After Sheikh’s Anti-Israel Diatribe

Middle East • Views: 3,377

When the “Chief Islamic Judge” of the “moderate” Palestinian Authority launched a vicious tirade against Israel at a meeting attended by Pope Benedict today (even though he wasn’t scheduled to speak at all), the Pope walked out.

Chief Islamic Judge of the Palestinian Authority, Sheikh Tayseer Rajab Tamimi, launched a poisonous verbal attack at Israel at a Monday night gathering attended by Pope Benedict XVI.

In a meeting with organizations involved in inter-religious dialogue at the Notre Dame Jerusalem Center, Tamimi called upon Muslims and Christians to unite against what he said were the murderous Israelis.

Taking the podium after the pope without being on the original list of speakers scheduled for the evening, Tamimi, speaking at length in Arabic, accused Israel of murdering women and children in Gaza and making Palestinians refugees, and declared Jerusalem the eternal Palestinian capital.

Following the diatribe and before the meeting was officially over, the pope exited the premises. Army Radio reported that the pope shook Tamimi’s hand before walking out.

Minutes after the embarrassing occurrence, Father Federico Lombardi, director of the Holy See press office, released a response to the incident. “The intervention of Sheikh Tayseer Tamimi was not previewed by the organizers of the interreligious meeting that took place at Notre Dame Centre in Jerusalem,” the message read. “In a meeting dedicated to dialogue, this intervention was a direct negation of what [it] should be,” it continued.

Word is that the Pope didn't know what the guy had said, but walked out as soon as it was clear that he had been unscheduled and abusing the forum to engage in an anti-Israel rant. That'd explain the handshake which must've happened when the guy wrapped up his "contribution".

Seems the speaker pulled the same stunt when JP2 visited. No wonder he wasn't on the programme - just a pity the authorities let him attend at all.

YOU GO BENEDICT !

This pope is not fooled.

I will re post this LGF post from shortly after Benedict was elected: (bolds are mine)

#179 True German Ally 4/20/2005 8:57:37 am PDT

Pope Benedict may come across as the Great Inquisitor, but he has never refused discussion and arguments. He is firm on the "essentials" of the Catholic faith. The German Catholic professors he suspended clearly violated the essential principles of Catholicism. He is an extremely intelligent, bright personality... a bit shy with people though. He won't pretend to have the charisma of JPII.

From my conversations with him in the late 70s, when he was archbishop of Munich, I learned a few things about him:

1) That he hated the Nazis even during his short time in the Hitler Youth. He was a nominal member, but was exempted weeks after his compulsory joining because of his fragile health and studies in the Catholic seminary (many boys actually joined Catholic institutions to avoid service in the HJ.) His teen years had a lasting effect on him as he was able to see the difference between reality and what the Nazis taught. His love for truth and being truthful all the time stems from this early experience.

2) He was a progressive Catholic in his early year (played an important role at the 2nd Vaticanum), but the intolerance of 1968 made him change his mind. He abhorred communism and the carefree nihilist thinkings in these times and became a conservative, but not a reactionary, as many claim.

3) He saw the dangers of Islamic fanatism in the 70s already. Khomeini was a menetekel for him. At this time he didn't see Islam so much as a threat for Europe (yet), but for Asia and Africa.

4) He is more a friend of the Jews than most other Catholic priests. I remember him saying that Christians and Jews are on the same direction to salvation, just on different paths. Islam instead was an aberration that would lead humanity into a religious "dead end street" (Sackgasse was his exact word). He strongly favoured a rapprochement between the Catholic and Jewish faith, but didn't see any common ground between Christianity and Islam.

And yes, I think, we'll see a few surprises from him in the next years. I had to chuckle when I heard the Chicoms demands today. Oh boy, they are messing with the wrong guy here.

Benedict of Nursia one restored the Christian faith in a devastated Europe. Commentators have focussed much on Benedict XV as the closest role model of Ratzinger. But I think he's much closer to Benedict XIV.

[Link: [Link: www.newadvent.org...]...]

And yes, he loved the "Apfelmaultaschen" (pasta made with potato flour, filled with apples and powder sugar and cinnamon on top) my wife prepared for him :-)

They look like this:

I guess you won't find this detail on CNN :-)

Tamimi needs his meds (From Pope John Paul II's visit to Israel in 2000):

Later that afternoon, a tripartite interreligious meeting, on which John Paul had insisted, illustrated just how difficult "the dialogue" is, in and around Jerusalem. The Grand Mufti of Jerusalem had refused to participate; Chairman Arafat had delegated Sheik Taysir Tamimi, an Islamic judge from the PA, to be the Muslim spokesman. Tamimi and Rabbi Lau flanked the Pope on a dais at the Pontifical Notre Dame Institute. Lau began by speaking of the need for peace and dialogue in everyday life; then, as the New York Times’ Alessandra Stanley wrote, he "put an abrupt end to both by thanking John Paul for ‘your recognition of Jerusalem as [Israel’s] united, eternal capital city.’" The Pope had not done that—the Holy See, which takes no position on the question of sovereignty in Jerusalem, nevertheless insists that access to the city’s holy places and their integrity be secured by an "international statute"—and someone in the audience shouted, "The Pope did not recognize Jerusalem." Things got more volatile when Tamimi welcomed the Pope, in Arabic, as "the guest of the Palestinian people on the land of Palestine, in the city of holy Jerusalem, eternal capital of Palestine," and was met by loud applause by the audience. He went on to insist, in a rather frenzied rhetorical style, that there could be no peace in the region until all of "Palestine" was united under "President Yassir Arafat"; more applause followed. The moderator, Rabbi Alon Goshen-Gottstein, tried to save the meeting by reminding those present that they were supposed to have come "as religious people who can put aside our politics." John Paul spoke briefly and pointedly of religion as "the enemy of exclusion and discrimination, of hatred and rivalry, of violence and conflict," but shortly after he finished, Sheik Tamimi abruptly got up and left the meeting. It was later explained by a Vatican official that the sheik had leaned over to the Pope before departing and explained that he had a "previous engagement." One had to wonder precisely what engagement trumped the Pope in the sheik’s mind.

As I recall the reason Sheikh Tamimi left was so that he would not have to shake Rabbi Lau's hand.

McKiernan out as U.S. head in Afghanistan

WASHINGTON, May 11 (UPI) -- U.S. Army Gen. David McKiernan has been asked to resign as commander of U.S. forces in Afghanistan, Defense Secretary Robert Gates said Monday.

Gates said during a news conference he would recommend that Army Lt. Gen. Stanley McChrystal replace McKiernan and that Lt. Gen. David Rodriguez be assigned as deputy commander, a new position.

"Today we have a new policy set by our new president. We have a new strategy, a new mission and a new ambassador," Gates said. "I believe that new military leadership also is needed."

I have included his remarkably bold and astute speech of defiance and reclamation...

Retch.

She posts DeWinter's full speech, including this lovely section:

Our response should be strong, clear and aggressive, and I would like to quote the Austrian Bishop who said :

“Charles Martel forced Islam back at Poitiers in 732 , and in 1683 near Vienna, Islam was again forced out.

“And if it is necessary, then for a third time we should also force Islam back to the place it belongs, namely the far side of the Mediterranean Sea.”

The "Austrian bishop" DeWinter cites is Kurt Krenn -- who was ousted after being involved in a disgusting sex scandal at a seminary: Pope replaces sex scandal bishop.

Pope John Paul II has accepted the resignation of a disgraced Austrian bishop at the centre of a sex and child pornography scandal at a seminary.

Bishop Kurt Krenn, 68, was in overall charge of the seminary where investigators found thousands of lewd images, including child pornography.

The bishop has told the media that he stepped down voluntarily and not under pressure from the Vatican. The Pope has appointed another Austrian bishop to take his place.

Bishop Krenn was responsible for the running of the seminary 80km (49 miles) from Vienna, which was identified by an Austrian magazine earlier this year as a centre of homosexual activity.

[Link: www.hurryupharry.org...]

Notice the way an issue like this is blown out of proportion by the so-called ‘anti-Jihad movement’. KFC is responding to customer demand by trialling halal meat in a handful of London stores. For Robert Spencer and his disciples, however, this masks ‘Islamic supremacism’ and non-Muslims adopting a ’subservient’ position. At the same time, Spencer can also see that KFC is, in fact, pursuing the bottom line - i.e. profit. I would have thought a conservative like Spencer would be all for that, but, no, because for him this is a case of a company profiting from pandering to ‘Islamic supremacists’ - making profits from Muslims just isn’t the done thing.

Naturally, following the likes of Spencer, the BNP has used this minor issue as justification for making the absurd claim that ‘British culture is being crushed under the wave of immigrant colonisation’.

And for what it's worth, I shake hands with my adversaries on a regular basis. I've noticed it throws them off balance, more so when they themselves are the sort to foam at the mouth at the earliest opportunity.

No evidence, but the time line makes sense

The introductions and shaking of hands (and photo ops) usually happens BEFORE speeches, as the invitees are being presented to each other up on stage.

Then the various speakers make their remarks.

Oh, so in other words JPost printed the Israeli Army line about the handshake purely as an irrelevant and inflammatory bit of misleading journalism. That's just great.

From the article, a counterpoint - emphasis mine:

Sohaila Zenelabideen Hammad, spokeswoman of the Saudi National Center for Human Rights, told the Associated Press on Monday that the judge's remarks are reason for concern for being "too extreme."

"It is not acceptable, it is even forbidden in Islam to beat a woman on her face. ... No matter what the woman does, the man has no right whatsoever and under any circumstances to beat his wife on the face," said Hammad, who was not at the conference.

The New Colossus

Not like the brazen giant of Greek fame,
With conquering limbs astride from land to land;
Here at our sea-washed, sunset gates shall stand
A mighty woman with a torch, whose flame
Is the imprisoned lightning, and her name
Mother of Exiles. From her beacon-hand
Glows world-wide welcome; her mild eyes command
The air-bridged harbor that twin cities frame.
"Keep, ancient lands, your storied pomp!" cries she
With silent lips. "Give me your tired, your poor,
Your huddled masses yearning to breathe free,
The wretched refuse of your teeming shore.
Send these, the homeless, tempest-tost to me,

That's what the report says. The Pope's actions make perfect sense in this context.

Isn't Tamini the jerk who wouldn't shake hands with a Jew at some past meeting? If so, the Pope's action is even more delicious; it frames Tamini's own history of bigotry and intolerance against the Pope's magnanimity.

I haven't seen a single commentator of note suggest that this in any way indicates acceptance of Tamini's rant. The effect seems to have been to shine a light onto Tamini's actual words and their hate-filled message. Dragging this sort of thing out into the light, while maintaining your own dignity, is a sweet outcome.

Taking the podium after the pope without being on the original list of speakers scheduled for the evening, Tamimi, speaking at length in Arabic, accused Israel of murdering women and children in Gaza and making Palestinians refugees, and declared Jerusalem the eternal Palestinian capital.

This demonstrates how much a "peace agreement" with the Palestinians would be worth.

Interview with filip dewinter:

DEWINTER: But I wasn't born a Moroccan, I was born a Fleming in Bruges. Let me give you another hypothesis. If I would move to Morocco, than I would understand that I must adapt. And I don't want that. Therefore I don't move to Morocco.

[Interviewer] But it's not about that. It's about that the emancipation process of the immigrant community is as necessary today as that of the Flemish, the workers and the women was in the 20th century. They also had to force equal rights.

DEWINTER: There's a big difference. We play at home. On our own field.

[Interviewer] Whoever is born as a Moroccan Belgian also plays at home.

DEWINTER: That foreigner doesn't play at home. That foreigner is a guest here, should act like a guest. There are many guests who stay longer, but they are still guests. They must understand..

[Interviewer] Whoever is born here is not a guest. That is their land just as well as it's yours

DEWINTER: I always think that a cat born in a fish shop is not a fish just because of that - to express it plastically. It takes maybe a few generation before people are completely assimilated. But that is the intention in the end: Be a Fleming among Flemish. But than we should also make an effort on our side to make it clear to them . And we don't do that.

But, like Sharmuta said earlier, American isn't a race. It's a location, a limited soveraignty of a specific government, and a set of ideas. Which is why the idea of not granting citizenship upon birth to anyone but rather putting everyone through the same test & oath, whether 1st generation or 15th, is appealing to me. But it wouldn't ever gain popularity, so it's just a thought experiment.

Whereas the Palestinian Jews were ready from day one because they built for themselves a democratic, operational and functional "state" institutions (schools, post office, unions, health care, etc etc etc) in Mandatory Palestine during the 100+ years prior to independence.

The "Palestinian" Arabs don't have far to look for an example.

They don't look, because it's not about building a state, it's about destroying one.

Not at all surprising or unexpected. Her propaganda value had dropped to near zero, and continued imprisonment would have increasingly been a liability for Iran. They can make a huge show of how merciful they are, and condemn the West out of the other side of their mouth at the same time, while avoiding any real penalties. It's all upside from the Iranian perspective.

They also know that Obama will take any "open hand" gesture at face value and buy more time for the centrifuges to spin.

[Link: www.famousbelgians.net...]

Most people will agree that every country in the world has shaped history in some way. Why is it then that the majority of people I meet seem to be of the opinion that Belgium is the exception to this rule ? Nothing is more likely to get my blood boiling than someone asking me "I bet you can't name me 5 famous Belgians". Yet, this tends to be the first question most Belgians get asked when they venture abroad.

When PETA announced the whole "sea kitten" thing, their reasoning was that if people thought of kittens when they were eating fish, they wouldn't want to eat fish anymore. Because they'd be reminded of kittens.

re: #314 Spare O'Lake

Yet another version:

The pope was able to read the entire text of the speech prepared for his meeting May 11 with organizations involved in interreligious dialogue, but several Jewish leaders walked out later when a Muslim cleric, who was not scheduled to speak, took the microphone.

When Latin Patriarch Fouad Twal of Jerusalem convinced the chief Palestinian justice, Sheik Taysir al-Tamimi, to stop talking, the pope shook the sheik's hand, then left the hall.

Pope Benedict does not speak Arabic and obviously did not understand what the sheik was saying. Rabbi David Rosen, director of interreligious affairs for the American Jewish Committee, who was at the meeting, later called the pope's smile while the sheik was speaking "a smile of patient frustration."

The abrupt end of the evening meeting meant that the religious leaders did not get to greet the pope personally and did not have an opportunity to give him the gifts they had prepared.

Why did he think "several Jewish leaders walked out?" Shouldn't that have raised some concern? And what was the point of his leaving AFTER Tamimi had stopped his rant?

I've been defending against some rather unseemly slurs against this Pope over the past few days (really nasty stuff in some of the op-eds on YNet) but I'm not seeing a lot to celebrate here. Yet.

re: #445 Kragar (Proud to be Kafir)

I think its more of the fact she couldn't get any men to date her.

From her IMDb page:

Came out as gay on November 15, 2008, at a pro-gay marriage rally in Las Vegas hosted by the LGBT (Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, and Transgender) Center of Southern Nevada. At that rally, she also publicly announced for the first time that she has a wife, to whom she was married in California on October 25, 2008.

And here I used to think she was kind of attractive (even if she is a moonbat).

461 funky chicken  Mon, May 11, 2009 2:09:59pm

I really, really hope that this decision had nothing to do with McKiernan's vigorous defense of our guys against the recent accusations of "air raiding innocent villagers" in Afghanistan.

I had hoped that his speaking out meant that the Obama admin might not repeat the Haditha and MARSOC debacles (hoped, not believed), but ... bummer.

[Link: hosted.ap.org...]

WASHINGTON (AP) -- Defense Secretary Robert Gates fired the commander of the Afghanistan war Monday, saying the Obama administration needed "fresh thinking" to turn around the war against a resurgent Taliban. Gen. David McKiernan was replaced after less than a year in the job. The new commander will be Lt. Gen. Stanley McChrystal, also an Army officer but with experience as a leader of special forces. McKiernan has a more conventional background.

Waiting for the actual launch. Early demos work really, really well - on predetermined queries. On impromptu queries, it apparently doesn't do so great a job.

Could be fairly common demoware - a sort of software Potemkin Village. Only the real thing will show whether there are actually people behind the windows.

I'll certainly give it a try when it's available.

At the correspondents’ dinner, which Obama attended Saturday, Sykes blasted Limbaugh for saying he hoped Obama’s administration would fail, joking: “I think Rush Limbaugh was the 20th hijacker, but he was just so strung out on Oxycontin he missed his flight.”

Obama appeared to smile at the remark.

511 Walter L. Newton  Mon, May 11, 2009 2:20:56pm

ON TOPIC -

Good for the pope, but in general, complete and utter proof that a lot of the leadership in Islam (and their more radical followers) have no intention of coexisting with the Jews, and on a larger scale, coexisting with Western societies.

They want a "religious war." And, as barbaric as it seems, they will probably be getting one sometime in the future.

In the past, Western nations have made treaties with Germans and Russians and China and Japan, and we have left each other up to their own politics and religion, as long as we didn't try to step all over each other. Even if we didn't see eye to eye on policy and politics, or even certain human rights.

But that's going to work with the radical members of Islam. For them, it's going to be as it always has been, a all or nothing proposition.

The west will prevail, but it's not going to be pretty.

I feel reassured that The Church is on my side in this struggle. A perfect organization- of course not. But when I think of an ally trying to be better than its past, that knows history, that I would rather stand with in the interest of Western Values, then I'm glad it's this man. You know Walter, sadly, I agree.

If there is one positive assessment of this enemy, they are methodical, & patient. The first attempt at the Trade Center was in 1993. They waited almost a decade before trying it again.

re: #526 formercorpsman

You know Walter, sadly, I agree.

I think right now we are back in a mentality where most of this is was our doing. Kind of like Carter after Vietnam.

If there is one positive assessment of this enemy, they are methodical, & patient. The first attempt at the Trade Center was in 1993. They waited almost a decade before trying it again.

Right now, what should be getting massive attention, is Pakistan. The shit sandwich that might become is an international nightmare.

We are certainly not paying close attention to who and what we are actually dealing with. It's almost as if Western leaders (and population) can't imagine an enemy who has 100 percent no regards for human life, man, women or children.

They have no regards for history, monuments of different cultures, the literature of nations, the relics of the past greatness of human endeavors, the love of nature and the planet itself.

They solely exist to feed their base appetites, sexual conquest, ego, killing even their fellow believers if it serves a purpose to "please" their manufactured god.

Purely male, purely hedonistic, fueled by hate, powered by the fragrance of domination, lacking in any skills of human advancement, pure evil.

I don't know that it's as important these days, with fuel injection, but in the days of the carburetor, you needed a more volatile fuel in cold weather, for easier atomization of the fuel (for easier starting). In the summer you needed a less volatile fuel, to avoid the fuel boiling in the fuel line near the engine, which caused vapor lock. Yes, I've experienced vapor lock in an older car (on numerous occasions), and it was a bitch.

That I remembered, and it speaks of just how honorable Israel is...they very well could have found a loophole, and executed him. You have no idea how angry I am that he was allowed to stay here all these years.

I will not believe that he is really deported until the plane lands in Germany, and he is taken straight to prison.

IIRC, Germany has enough evidence to find him guilty. We can just call him John the Terrible. That he is not Ivan, I believe.

I don't know how many Lizards are old enough to remember WWII, and the total shock when the camps were entered...I was born in 1938, and was old enough to understand, before 1945, that something beyond belief was going on, but nothing really prepared us for the reality that we saw in newsreels at the movies.

And now, in May of 2009? A wave of Jew hate is sweeping the world again, as the cult of islam and the hate groups that Charles has shown so many times are taking over in Europe unabated.

We need thousands of Charles Johnsons, but there is only one.

And I have to believe that we will see Demjanjuk dead. I have to. That he has lived to be in his 80's? If only my grandparents' families HY"D could have also lived a long life....if only.

I hope that you will be able to come here. We need people like you. Your religion has no bearing on it! We are essentially a Christian country.

I think that the creation of the EU has been a large part of the problem. Europe has never been homogeneous, and now? Some of the regulations, re cucumbers, were hilarious, but a lot of it is just blather, and in the end, the identity of each member of the EU is not melding into a melting pot, like the US is, nor should it.

The greatest problem is the number of muslims who are flooding Europe unabated, and their number of children, compared to the members of the EU. This is frightening. I saw some charts that nearly blew my mind re population forecasts.

No, the UK, and the Europe that existed pre-EU and muslimification is tragically gone, unless there is the courage to speak out..and say that the Emperor has no clothes, just like our situation here, in the US, with Hussein.

Good on the Pope....now if only certain unnamed weak-kneed ass-kissing American politicians could take a lesson... :P

Just to follow up my post near the beginning of the thread:

Organisers tried to persuade the sheikh to stop, but he continued for several minutes. According to local media reports, there was no translation available, so the pontiff was made aware of the content of the statement only after Mr al-Tamimi had finished speaking. The Pope and his entourage then left the meeting.

That's because America is special. "American" is not an ethnicity. Our nationality is based on ideals, not blood.

Someone tell that to Pat Buchanan . . .

Pope Benedict for president.

Somebody above has probably voiced this opinion, but it's too bad Barry wouldn't have the stones to do the same thing. As a matter of fact, he'd probably be laughing and grinning, just like he was during Wanda Sykes disgusting performance the other night...

re: #32 cannadian club akbar

For Israeli Arabs, the way you'd say it is "Keef (C)hala" which translates to "F*ck your Mother's P*ssy". It's interesting as a curse phrase because in fact it's half Hebrew and half Arabic. I'm forgetting now which is which, but I always thought that an interesting bipartisan approach to telling someone to "F*ck Off" in Israel (for both Arabs and Jews it's the preferred phrase -- at least 20 years ago it was).

Of course they also use their middle finger, but instead of pointing it upwards, it's pointed dowrads with the rest of the fingers essentially pointing straight ahead (maybe a comment on the other person's inability to maintain an erection?)

Finally, the gesture of choice in Israel (and I think this is true in some other Mediterranean and ME Countries) is to make a fist with the left hand and then slam it own on the right inner elbow which then, immediately upon "receiving the left fists' blow on its inner elbow, moves/swings from pointing straight ahead (or even straight downward to give the swing a longer arc) to upwards until the 90 degree angle is reached (where the right fist is "pointing" directly upwards and is now in front of your face) -- often this is accompanied by a sort of kissing sound as if you're squeezing or pushing the fist "somewhere" where it shouldn't go. And if you're really pissed, at the very end you then twist your right fist (now pointing upwards in front of your face) back and forth, again, as if you were perhaps inserting it somewhere (which coordinates then beautifully with the "kissing sound"). It's quite effective as a put down actually when you see/hear it done.

That Italian thing where they "flick" the back of the fingers under their chin does not exist in the Middle East (I NEVER saw it done there).

It really doesn't get better than this.

Well, there's this... But I guess it's a matter of taste.

I'm sorry. The Pope dissed no one. As someone said above, it's becoming increasingly clear that there was a total failure of communication and he withdrew from the situation. A lunatic who had embarrassed his predecessor took the podium, out of order, and he didn't leave. The Jewish dignitaries in the room walked out and he didn't leave. The lunatic finished his speech and he shook his hand. Then he left. Something is very wrong with this story.

Give Pope Benedict XVI credit for baytzim and brains in this case. Give the Sheikh all due discredit for dishonoring the Arab tradition of Hospitality. That is all.

re: #646 Dr. Shalit

Again, sorry. Don't see either baytzim or brains on display here. All is see is confusion and bad communication. Delayed my response to this for several hours, checked out a bunch of different sources, took a deep breath. It's being blown up into something it's not.

I wonder if the Pope is regretting what he said about a Paleostinian State...

We know for sure that Hillary wouldn't have walked out. She didn't walk out, but laughed and nodded, when Suha Arafat went off on a similar rant.

Some people imagine she's not an anti-semite. In Egypt, that's called de Nile.

Some people say Pope Benedict is one, just because he's German. In clinical psychiatric terminology, that's called nuts.

re: #622 callahan23
There is one country where that is not the case. Here in Italy, in spite of a chronic addiction to multilateralism and a ridiculous overestimation of the UN, Jew-bashing is immensely unpopular, and the local right-wingers are all more or less pro-Israel. Recently, a splinter extreme-left trade union has tried to start the kind of conflation of Jew-hate and Israel-hate that is commonplace (God help us) in the British left; their call for a boycott of Jewish shops in Rome was almost literally howled down by a storm of protest from both sides of the party divide and from all quarters, beginning with the President, and had to whimper some sort of apology. In general, Italians are pro-Israeli, though they hope for some sort of peace; and they are realistic about Palestinian and Arab attitudes. Plus, we carry an inherited rage and shame at Mussolini's "racial laws" of 1938, which have been condemned even by the current mayor of Rome, who is a Fascist. Nobody in Italy, except for the manic fringe, wants to be seen a supporter of what is universally regarded as the most disgraceful event of modern Italian history. And there is the peculiar fact that the BNP/ Vlaams Belang/ Le Pen space for communitarian and racist politics is filled in Italy by the Northern League, which is conservative, communitarian, anti-immigrant, but also anti-centralist and anti-fascist, and rejects the whole Hitlerite package. This means that there is far less space for Jew-bashing to expand.

In general, don't write off Europe. All free people suffer from a terrible unwillingness to recognize even clear and present danger, and history teaches that free nations most often are caught by surprise by tyrannical enemies and have to fight back from apparently hopeless positions. But it also teaches that once a free people is committed to a fight, they do not cease to fight until the aggressor is annihilated.
