Pelosi Accuses CIA of Lying to Her About Waterboarding

Politics • Views: 3,471

Obviously, Nancy Pelosi can’t continue to stick to her story that she was “never told” that the CIA was using waterboarding on a few detained terrorists, now that documents have been released showing that she was briefed on it.

So now she says the CIA lied to her.

House Speaker Nancy Pelosi today accused the CIA of “misleading” her on the use of harsh interrogation techniques in the fall of 2002, acknowledging for the first time publicly she knew alleged terrorist detainees were subjected to waterboarding more than six years ago.

Pelosi called for the CIA to release detailed portions of her own September 2002 briefing about interrogation techniques, saying that at that time she was told the CIA was not waterboarding detainees. After weeks of sticking to prior statements that she then was never “briefed” about waterboarding’s use, Pelosi today said her top security adviser was part of a briefing in February 2003 in which he learned interrogators were waterboarding terrorists.

Is anyone out there buying her spin?

I think it has become so bad, (perhaps by design) this shenanigan can be out in the open, with no repercussion whatsoever.

I expect the politicians to lie to me with a straight face. There are no surprises anymore. The concept of love of country, duty, honor, would not be a reality to these people if it were the teeth of a pit bull biting them in the ass.

These bastards get to dance, spin, shuck, and jive, while real people assume the risk, place their lives in jeopardy doing the dirty work.

She spins, Spann is dead.

Maybe at least Joe Citizen is wising up and will vote their asses out of office in the midterm elections.

OT, but Congress wants to make it illegal for satellite companies to carry terrorist shows.

Members of the United States Congress are submitting a bill that will label carriers of incitive satellite stations as terrorist organizations.
The proposed bill, part of US efforts to stem the demonization of Americans in the Arab media, was prompted by what its authors say is incitement to kill Americans on satellite stations.
Channels such as Al-Manar, the mouthpiece of the Lebanon-based Hizbullah, Hamas's Al-Aqsa and A-Rafidein, an Iraqi anti-government channel, are broadcast throughout the Middle East and beyond via satellite carriers ArabSat and NileSat.

This would actually go after the satellite companies, not just the stations. So if Al-Manar broadcasts something, the US pressure ArabSat and NileSat to stop broadcasting the channel.
Personally, I think this goes too far; it opens the door for the government to pressure web providers to stop hosting web sites deemed to be inciting violence. While Stinky does such a good job that LGF might not be pressured, not everyone is that careful.
They can go after the stations, because they control content, but the providers just provide bandwidth.

121 lawhawk  Thu, May 14, 2009 9:47:59am

The media isn't exactly going out of its way to show that Pelosi continues spinning yarns and lying obnoxiously about her knowledge of the EIT and her briefings on the matter. It is a matter of the public record that the briefings took place and that she was there. Other people are on the record as noting what was discussed and that of all those briefed, only Jane Harmon ever had any qualms about what was discussed as aggressive interrogation techniques.

Members briefed actually wondered whether the methods were sufficiently stringent to get the results needed.

Pelosi lies, but the media continues to treat this as though it isn't a sufficient scandal to sink her odious posturing.

Of course, Steny Hoyer has to be sharpening the knives. He was thwarted from the Majority Leadership by Pelosi, and payback is likely in the offing. He can show Pelosi to be unfit for the Leadership by repeatedly lying about her position on national security and that a sober recollection of the events is needed - and one that cannot be obtained with Pelosi at the helm.

Hoyer could claim a two-fer and also right the collective Democrat ship on waterboarding, which has sprung a serious leak.

The CIA isn't taking any of this lying down, and Democrat complaints about leaks ring hollow particularly when they were frothing about how leaks during the Bush Adminstration were needed to expose mistreatment and overreaching by the Bush Administration. Now, they are facing a CIA that is openly hostile to the Obama Administration due to the outing of agents that participated in those sessions, and the collective chain-yanking about the legal culpability for those sessions.

The saddest part is that national security suffers as a result of all the politics, and sooner or later, someone is going to carry out another attack, and we aren't going to be in a position to stop it because of all this nonsense in Congress and the CIA.

We have a Presidency, Senate, Congress, and soon to be Supreme Court controlled by left leaning ideologues.

The rate we are placing ourselves in debt in the country can produce almost as much damage as any terror attack.

Nancy Pelosi goes from saying she was not briefed on the enhanced interrogation. Weeks later she finally admits (after being called on it) that she was briefed by the CIA. Then she denies again being told yet later says the CIA "lied to her." Or something to that effect.

This botoxed imbecile is the Speaker of the House of the United States of America. In the coming months she will be working alongside other congressmen to hammer out healthcare legislation.

She will be rewarded by her constituency with her re-election in the next congressional election. She is perhaps a perfect reflection of the 8th Congressional District of California.

Luton Mosque fire update........
EXTREMIST BEATEN UP OVER MOSQUE ATTACK

AN ISLAMIC extremist who hurled abuse at Britain’s home-coming troops has been beaten up by fellow Muslims.

Sayful Islam was set upon by moderates who say his controversial beliefs are making their lives hell.

Their mosque was firebombed after he led the now notorious protest against the 2nd Battalion Royal Anglian Regiment’s homecoming parade in Luton in March.
..........
“Punches were thrown and Sayful legged it. He will be looking over his shoulder from now on.’’

One Muslim posted on an Islamic website: “He got bust up. Wherever they go they’d best watch out.’’

One former worshipper at the bombed mosque said: “There has been some trouble. He was not badly hurt but he has not been seen since.

Thanks for the link. This is excellent news. It's unbelievable that it has taken this long for congress to get to this, but I'm glad they're doing it, and I hope the Democratic congress will let this through. It's interesting to note this part:

It is possible that the timing of this bill was calculated to coincide with Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak visit to the US and American President Barack Obama's visit to Egypt next month.

We'll have to pay attention to Obama's speech in a few weeks. Egypt receives billions of dollars in American aid every year, far more than any other country except Israel, and yet the Egyptian government aids anti-American terrorist groups. Maybe that will change someday.

220 Killgore Trout  Thu, May 14, 2009 10:14:05am

Two arrests over soldier protest

Two men have been arrested following anti-war protests during a soldier's homecoming parade in Bedfordshire.

Both men, from Luton, were part of a demonstration while soldiers from the Royal Anglian Regiment marched through Luton on 10 March, police said.

The men have been arrested on suspicion of public order offences and are being questioned at Luton police station.

Protesters held placards saying "Anglian Soldiers Go To Hell" and "Butchers of Basra" during the event.

Det Insp Mark Upex said: "These arrests are part of an on going investigation into the events on 10 March and are the result of extensive enquiries and review of CCTV from the day in question.

It looks like the extremists might have set the fire to stoke ethnic/religious tensions.

I imagine we'll start hearing the drumbeat soon of "What did Pelosi know, and when did she know it?" And it will be coming from her own party.

I won't take much for cleared members of Congress to obtain the minutes to the meetings she attended, verify what was said and by whom, and cross-check briefing material against other intelligence records.

And for once, the GOP is doing the right thing - letting the Democrats handle this on their own. She's their mess; make them clean it up. The only GOP involvement required will be if the Dems make a move to bury this, but that doesn't seem likely at this point. Too much negative publicity that crosses their campaign pledges in way too many ways.

And the GOP has to be on the lookout for manipulations by the Executive Branch if/when a new Speaker is selected. Anything that even whiffs like a hand-picked lackey needs to be dragged out into the light with Separation of Powers, Checks and Balances playing loudly in the background. Because I'm certain this will be the next thing to happen.

Look for Reid's demise soon, too.

One thing that a lot of people don't get.

The intelligence agencies don't work for the President; they work for the Executive Branch. That is a significant difference. Presidents may come and go, but the Executive Branch is always there.

What this means is that the intelligence agencies have every incentive to not lie. By lying to make one President happy, the agents may jeopardize their career when the next President is elected (or the current President changes his mind).

And since politicians make it a habit of blaming others for their mistakes, the intelligence communities are not about to go out on a limb.

Unfortunately, Nancy and Obama have been too willing to throw people under the bus for their political gain.

Also, just to expand on your points: the intelligence service isn't exactly a stranger to being made a scapegoat. That, coupled with intermittent bouts of rabid Congressional oversight imposed over the years, has led to an agency that very carefully documents everything. There are bound to be meeting minutes detailing what Pelosi was told, who else was present, dates, times, places and on and on. And there will be reams of material supporting the material that was briefed. Trying to make the claim that the CIA "lied" is simply too easy to disprove; it would take less than an afternoon's worth of hearings to ascertain the truth.

She's in way too deep now, with little hope of recovery. Stick a fork in her; she's done.

keep her in place until the mid terms. then demote her to minority leader

If the dems lose the House in the midterms, she won't keep minority leader. She will be blamed for the loss, and there will be a challenge, and she will lose -- if she even tries for the post. It's easier to have one scapegoat than the entire Democratic membership.

252 Raiderdan  Thu, May 14, 2009 11:16:41am

Dammit, NJHockey fan beat me to it on John Belushi.

If you want to know whether Pelosi is done or not, just take a look at the Washington Post. They have been running anti-John Murtha stories on his "Airport for Nobody" for the past week. Now, what you say does John Murtha have to do with Pelosi? He was her benefactor in the run-up to the 2006 Speaker race between her and Steny Hoyer. Murtha backed Pelosi over Hoyer, and she became Speaker of the House.

Now, considering that the Washington Post would NEVER take such damaging goods from a GOP source, there's only one place it would come from: Hoyer.

He's laying the groundwork to discredit Pelosi's chief defender and assume the mantle of the Speaker of the House, probably with the Obama administration's approval.

They don't want an anti-Bush bombthrower leading Congress anymore. They need a technocrat who can pass their agenda in time for the 2010 elections.

Nancy Pelosi is an albatross now around Obama's neck. A needless distraction.

That bus is about to go over a big 'ol bump, very soon.

It'll happen, sooner rather than later. Maybe July 4th weekend, or Memorial Day. She'll resign her Speaker post "for the good of the party" and so "I did not want to be a distraction to President Obama's agenda"

She'll be named Ambassador to the UN, or Italy, or some other consolation prize.

253 HippieforLife  Thu, May 14, 2009 11:18:25am

I thought Nancy looked very scared during all that press interview

That's just how she looks. . . botox does that, I gather. :)

re: #30 quickjustice

The CIA often has been incompetent and disloyal (witness the Valerie Plame debacle), but at Washington political infighting, they remain ninja masters.

I wouldn't want to be in Pelosi's position right now. Obama, Emanuel, and Hoyer would love to replace Pelosi with Hoyer, giving the White House complete control over the House of Representatives.

I agree with you 100%. Pelosi had better watch her back--and that would be easy since she's two-faced!

Barbara Boxer is delusional--and seems truly dumb. I'm not using an ad hominem statement here--just an observational remark. Isn't she related to Bill Clinton or Hillary?

Open foot, insert mouth. Pelosi screwed up big time and now she's lying to try to save her political life. The cwybawy weft isn't happwie abwout this one. Pelosi isn't even a good liar.

Oh snap!

She's digging a deep political hole, and soon it'll be just the right size to bury her.

272 Noam Chumpski  Thu, May 14, 2009 1:58:27pm

Nancy may have gone too far this time.

Meaning, I don't think the whole world of corruption and intimidation that she lords over can save her from the CIA "leaking" her out of office.

Are the "cwybawy weft" affiliated to the Welsh nationalists?

274 LesLein  Thu, May 14, 2009 2:12:35pm

Her credibility is such that if Pelosi said the world is round I'd keep an eye on the horizon when I drive.

275 voluble  Thu, May 14, 2009 2:26:24pm

Well, considering it is coming from a lady who doesn't even know what a fossil fuel is, it is not altogether inconceivable that she just doesn't remember those briefings... or the newspaper reports which have come out repeatedly over the last few years detailing what was covered in them... or who her aides were that briefed her... or where she parked her car... or... well you get the picture.

People like Biden, Pelosi, Obama, Carter, Kerry, Frank, Dodd, Kennedy, Gore, Boxer and their ilk can only survive in politics where competence only gets in the way of doing the really, really big things. How can Pelosi run the health care system, the energy industry and regulate every minute of every day for every citizen if she is constantly having to remember things and be consistent from one day to the next?

We are in the very best of hands... are we not?

276 Tats66  Thu, May 14, 2009 2:59:54pm

Two possibilities:
1: pelosi is a lying piece of garbage and is unfit to be speaker

2: Pelosi is clueless, and just stupid enough to sit through a briefing not quite understanding what was said and gullible enough to be "misled"...and is unfit to be speaker....

Vote Pelosi/Streisand 2012 -- Nan can't remember it and Babs can't spell it.

278 rumcrook  Thu, May 14, 2009 3:07:17pm

what this proves is when you fire up the vengeance and retribution machine like the left has started to do on the notion of whether and if anyone should be held accountable (ie war crimes, criminal trials ect) for waterboarding and harsh tactics..... ......there are allways unintended consequences.

its interesting to see the ramifications of our "political leaders" running the system using third world tactics of total destruction including trying to criminalize the previous group in in charge. the left cant scream war crimes as rhetoric only, without some getting cought up and pulled under the bus themselves.

if nan goes under the bus I think we should take up a collection to have someone play dont cry for me argentina in the background on a boombox.

re: #248 CEQAttorney

The reason people don't get that

the intelligence agencies don't work for the President

is because it's not true. The President is the Chief Executive, the Commander in Chief, the freaking grand poobah for Christ's sake...please God don't tell me you are an attorney and just said that.

Democrats are like Weebles - they wobble but they don't fall
down. There's still that dude serving in Congress who had ill-gotten
money stashed in his freezer.

Dems may be like Weebles, but Joseph Cao, first Vietnamese-American Congressman and a Republican, defeated William Jefferson of freezer cash fame last Nov.

Pelosi is a joke, but so are her CA constituents.

286 Pygmalienation  Thu, May 14, 2009 7:04:54pm

Even if all her furiously spinning and mercurial stories are true, that leaves one to conclude that she is at the very least incompetent in such a position of responsibility. The country and her constituents deserve way better leadership than this.
But of course, it's obvious to any honest person that this is all BDS writ large.

Something that has not yet been pointed out is Pelosi's Clintonian weasling of past and present tense (as in "it depends on what the meaning of the word 'is' is.).

“The only mention of waterboarding at that briefing was that it was not being employed,”

She later states in reply to a question

"... they talked about interrogations that they had done and said, "We want to use enhanced techniques, and we have legal opinions that say that they are OK. We are not using waterboarding." That's the only mention, that they were not using it. And we now know that earlier they were."

Translation: They did tell me that it had been employed in the past, and that they intend to use it in the future, but not that it was presently being employed (i.e., at that very moment)

Since Pelosi doesn't seem to get the first rule about digging holes, I vote we rent her a backhoe.

It would appear she already has one as her plot deepens, thickens and sickens.

NASA: Hubble just found Pelosi's integrity 3 million lightyears away on same planet as Biden's commonsense.
