That Tiny Popping Sound You Hear is the Exploding of Lefty Bloggers’ Heads

Another flip-flop from the Obama administration, and another case where we have to give him a thumbs-up for doing the right thing even though you can already hear the shrieking from the left: Obama revives tribunals for Gitmo detainees.

WASHINGTON (AP) — President Barack Obama says he is restarting military tribunals for a small number of terrorist suspects at Guantanamo though with several new legal protections for defendants.

Obama said in a statement Friday that his approach is “the best way to protect our country, while upholding our deeply held values.”

The decision puts Obama in the position of reviving a Bush-era trial system he once assailed as deeply flawed — and opposed as a senator.

Just think of all the things that the Left said were the reasons they hated Bush. Wiretaps, Military tribunals, massive deficts, being secretive, having questionable friends/connections, etc...Somehow I'm guessing that the Obama-love won't miss a beat despite his continuance/exacerbation of the very same things.
Slowly they're revealing that they hate simply because hate makes them feel better about themselves.

The President deserves credit for recognizing that his political and ideological inclinations were likely to cost American lives. One hopes that his new "limitations and safeguards" on the tribunals won't completely emasculate them.

The return of the revenge of the thing that lefties could not stand!

And in the way that almost have perfected, I posted something just after Charles put up a new post. I think the Lizarddim may enjoy it, so here it is.

Just a quick OT.

I was reading the comments on a story over on the WSJ when I came across the following. I had to share. It's about 5 or 6 comments down the page.

Our Obama,
Who art in Washington,
Hollow be thy change,
Thy unions come,
Their will be done,
On earth as it is in Detroit,
Give us this day our carbon cap,
And forgive W his waterboarding,
As you have forgiven your forgetful speaker,
And release pictures not into circulation,
but deliver us from Gitmo
For thine is the GM
And the Chrysler,
For ever and ever.................

A little further down, someone suggested an alternate ending,
For ever and ever.................in debt

I think Obama should be given credit for listening to his advisors. There was a steep learning curve for him to start with, and I think he's done a fairly good job to this point. I still don't agree with most of his policies (!), but I've been pleasantly surprised by some of his policy reversals. Two senior administration officials outlined several of the rules changes, which will be carried out by executive authority, to The Associated Press on Thursday night. They include:
_Restrictions on hearsay evidence that can be used in court against the detainees.
_A ban on all evidence obtained through cruel, inhuman or degrading treatment. This would include statements given from detainees who were subjected to waterboarding, a form of simulated drowning.
_Giving detainees greater leeway in choosing their own military counsel.
_Protecting detainees who refuse to testify from legal sanctions or other court prejudices.

Maybe they can be prosecuted for smoking.

So he can speak authoritatively on the CIA briefings based on his seat on the Subcommittee on Trade?

Uh-huh.

He's voicing support. Not offering any evidence.

Pelosi's playing this like an idiot. She should have simply owned her reversal long ago, instead of piling up lie upon lie upon lie. Now, it's the lies that are the issue - not the briefings.

And the briefings, along with any "misleading" done by anyone, are easily checked. They keep minutes, the information briefed is extensively documented, and the attendance records will allow questioning of other participants. None of this is going to support any of Pelosi's ever-changing explanations, and she ought to be smart enough to figure that out. But apparently she's not.

So Obama's approach is to give several new legal protections for defendants terrorists? Somehow I'm not shocked by this. Opening the tribunals back up may be a good thing, but then coupled with new legal protections for these killers, seems like a bad idea. This makes me question if we are really going to have tribunals for these known terrorists or if it will be turned into another circus show like many other things under Obama.

At the rate the President is flip-flopping on policy no one on either the left or right will believe anything position he takes and even fewer will go to the proverbial "mattress" for any policy decision for fear of being hung out to dry. The administration needs to "keep its powder dry," assess their policy position, make a policy decision, then stick to it. An inability to understand policy positions among great powers in the realm of foreign affairs can lead to serious miscalculations and really bad consequences. If the President and the administration vacillate on Iran, Taiwan, the Koreas, etc. as they have with tribunals and photos bad things will happen.

Third, as has been observed by others above, there is virtually no nexus between what Obama says and what he actually does. Most of the time he does the opposite, but not always--and sometimes he will do what he says (or its opposite) later, after the echoes from the statement itself have died away. The mere utterance of a plan, proposal, or course of action means very little in the current administration.

Obama is little different in that regard than most other Illinois politicians to come down the pike in the past decade. Daley is famous for saying one thing and doing another. Shoot, just yesterday, he tried to claim credit for reform. Then there's Blagojevich. That one said he'd reform the state government, no more business as usual, and that he cared so much about the kids. So what does he do? Business as usual, more corruption, and he even tried to take away hospital funds meant for a children's hospital in order to obtain more campaign cash from its head.

Why would Obama be any different than these guys?

I get the feeling that in those places where Obama didn't already have a definite opinion formed, the only reason why he was against stuff was because it helped his electoral chances. (No, duh, VX?) But now that he's actually getting into business here, these same areas are now becoming areas where he's forming opinions that, gosh, shucks, sound a lot like Bush. Why? Because that was the reasonable solution.

Now, if only we could get him to change his mind on how to manage the economy. Alas, he's already got his own opinions there.

I think Obama should be given credit for listening to his advisors. There was a steep learning curve for him to start with, and I think he's done a fairly good job to this point. I still don't agree with most of his policies (!), but I've been pleasantly surprised by some of his policy reversals. It shows he's not a foaming at the mouth moonbat like many of those who elected him.

It shows he is a politician. He wants the power. As I stated when he reversed his decision on the pictures. It was for political expediency. He cant afford to have half the nation angry at him. Especially if all hell breaks loose in one of the Muslim countries.

I heard some of his commencement address at some college in AZ (didn't pay enough attention at the time) and he sounded like he was still campaigning. Telling them that if they majored in business they should go out and help a non-profit organization to better help the disadvantaged and if they were teachers they should go to the schools which need them the most, where students aren't getting what they need and engineers should be taking jobs to convert the world into being green. Pandering for re-election? I don't think so. I think that the tribunal announcement is intended to deal with the fact that he's having trouble figuring out what to do with the thugs incarcerated in Gitmo.

He may perhaps realize that if he brings these people back here and runs them through the civilian courts, there will not only be an expensive and lengthy circus, but that some aspects of national security will be compromised, and that he will be accused of compromising it. In other words, much as he may hate the idea of the military tribunals, they are the less-worse alternative.

Whether right or wrong, at least George Bush stuck to a course of action (though not always). The mark of a good leader is not only the deliberation but the making of a decision and sticking by it, even if it means people getting angry at you. This is just another sign that Obama is not fit to lead, in my opinion.

Sticking to a course of action is only good, if it's the correct course. Not every change of course can be called a weak, flip-flop, sometimes, it's a change to correct the wrong one.

More Americans “Pro-Life” Than “Pro-Choice” for First Time
Also, fewer think abortion should be legal “under any circumstances”

Polls are just lies with numbers as far as I'm concerned, no matter what the outcome.

Pro-lifers tend to have more children, so that doesn't surprise me. James Taranto calls it "the Roe Effect". And yes, I've met "Jane Roe" (Norma McCorvey) on at least a couple of occasions. I've eaten dinner with her. She's, uh, one of a kind.

If you read the poll internals, all that happened is more on the right have moved pro life, 70% now. Also, 54% polled think abortion should be legal in certain cases, but not all. It looks like more call them self pro life, because very few are pro abortion, while still not ready to outlaw it in all cases.

I don't think any of this matters. It's the middle that carries elections, not the fringes. The nutters on the far left are only useful during the primaries, something Obama doesn't have to spend any time worrying about next time around.

Troy's celebrated solar house left in dark

Troy -- It was supposed to be a shining example of the green movement -- a completely independent solar-powered house with no gas or electrical hookups.

Seven months ago, officials gathered for a ribbon-cutting ceremony to celebrate the $900,000 house owned by the city of Troy that was to be used as an educational tool and meeting spot.

But it never opened to the public. And it remains closed.

Frozen pipes during the winter caused $16,000 in damage to floors, and city officials aren't sure when the house at the Troy Community Center will open.

"It's not safe right now, and there's no estimated opening time because it depends on when we can get funding," said Carol Anderson, director of the city's Parks and Recreation Department.

That surprised the Oakland County Planning and Economic Development Department, which advertised tours of the house for its Tuesday Oakland County Green Summit.

"No, I didn't know anything about it," said Steve Huber, spokesman for county planning.

Bret Rasegnan, planning supervisor for the department, said the solar tours have been removed from the finalized agenda for the summit.

"It is disappointing that we can't tour, but the summit will still be of great value. I don't think it's reflective of the technology."

FWIW, he spent his first hundred days demonizing capitalism and setting several parallel witch hunts into motion while buying a liberal congress in perpetuity by mortgaging my kid's future on an order of magnitude greater than Bush did.

That created the space needed with his acolytes to do things like follow Bush's policies on the WOT (which I am pleased about) as well as shafting the Gays and other constituent groups that will never visibly be considered "centrist". Obama is consolidating power and protecting his flanks, and people like Maureen Dowd are being good foot soldiers as they rationalize Obama's continuation of Bush's policies while simultaneously pre-emptively blaming Dick Cheney for any attack we may suffer in the future.

All quite crass and despicable behavior for a man admired by so many as a moral light in the world.

And how is $900,000 in building costs economical?

I'm talking photovoltaic roof panels. They are still too expensive and they only pay for themselves in 20 or so years, but those of us lucky enough to have them as a standard feature in our home (paid less than $900,000 for my home) are enjoying cheap electricity and have the satisfaction of "doing our part" for the environment by generating elec for the grid.

I've always advocated to builder groups to use their economies of scale to bring the prices down for new home building. Went nowhere, of course.

Troy's celebrated solar house left in dark

Lawrence Technological University, with help from DTE, mostly paid for the building. Its students built the 800-square-foot home, which was supposed to be livable year-round, free from the grid and churn out enough solar power to support a home-based business and electric vehicle.

Where not to send your kids. Not to worry. These students will probably get jobs with the Obama administration.

It's an 800 sf facility, built for $900,000. That works out to... lemme see here on a back of the napkin calculation.... $1,125 per square foot.

That's more expensive per square foot than most construction in Manhattan at the peak. By a huge margin. Actually, it's by an obscenely and insanely huge margin. And since this space was meant to be used as essentially classroom space, the comparison figures are fully on target.

That doesn't count the amount of time volunteered to build, in which case the costs would be higher still.

I got to call you on this. A correction is an alteration of course, arguable as to how far one tacks, but generally in a recognizably similar direction. What Obama is doing is an absolute about face, moving 180 degrees opposite to the direction he ran on. Complete reversal is a flip flop, correction is not.

I disagree. I recall the read my lips comment about taxes from the first Bush. He meant it at the time, but the reality was he had to break that pledge. I'd only call it a flip flop if he's promised no new taxes, knowing he'd switch once in office.

The solar cells may be paid back just in time to replace them as they end their useful life cycle (and the replacements will be much more efficient and economical).

Pushing solar isn't the end-all, and those who do ought to consider a sale-leaseback consideration where landlords lease out roofs to companies that will manage the solar arrays installed, and the landlord gets a cut of the power generated as a payment. That scenario makes more sense than installing and managing yourself, where you'll never recoup the costs.

I have a 7.5kw pv field. It was a great investment, frankly.

I live in the San Diego area, so we have a "tailwind" of sorts by getting more days of sun.

But the real advantage is as an inflation hedge. Energy prices will soar in the coming years with or without a recovery simply because the dollar will shrink in value due to all of the borrowing we are doing. Add whatever carbon tax that congress goes for (the current approach favors letting utilities goose folks for more money to deter consumption), and the "free" electricity becomes more valuable.

Many people do the 20 year payback calculation based on an assumption of a stable dollar and stable prices for the power you would otherwise buy. Plug in inflationary assumptions, and the payback period gets cut in half and the payoff beyond break even climbs even higher.

PV is a solid way to "lock in" the cost of electricity.

I don't think it's so much that he's heeded advice as much as someone told him the stark consequences of his intentions and he sobered up. He still wants to please his base and he's doing that economically to a large extent.

I welcome this change of heart by Obama.

I have become a bit more worrisome on something else that is becoming apparent to me: Obama has no code. He and his administration are ad-hoc wonks with no compass.

We see it with the banks and auto companies (arbitrariliy putting aside contract law in favor of a select set of supporters, firing CEOs, shoving aside senior, secured bond holders, arbitrarily trying to set pay scales not based on profitability of financial products, but on "quality.")

Capital markets are getting spooked by this. They don't like the fact that hundreds of years of precedent and law have been tossed out the window to the benefit of some political supporters (unions). They don't like the fact that CEOs can be fired without input from shareholders or the board. They don't like the fact that an investment in a company today can be turned on them tomorrow through populist sentiment and political suasion into a worthless scrap of paper.

He's following no rules. He follows no code. He's making this stuff up as he goes along. Capital goes where it is wanted, and so far, Obama has shown he wants all of it, leaving actual investors with nothing.

Good luck, auto-industry, on ever raising capital again. Who's next?

I criticize him for having bad judgement and bad instincts, regardless of whether he eventually comes around to making the right decision.
While his recent turnarounds are good for the country, in every case he made exactly the wrong decision first. His first instinct, using these photos as an example, was that his administration would not defend against the ACLU suit because supposedly he would lose in the long run. That's bullshit. He could have used his executive authority to tie it up in perpetuity for national security reasons - essentially the argument he is making now. But it remains that his first choice was to shrug and let the harm be done.
This lack of good judgement will manifest itself in future, dangerous situations and should be of concern to anyone. This is probably what Biden was referrring to when he warned us about Obama being challenged in the future and that we wouldn't like the result of his decisions.......

Everything I read was self serving in that he would "try" or "seek to". As far as I can tell, there are no court dates set and when the original order is carried out, he now has an out. That, and I heard the photos are being released from other sources. I think it's all CYA on Obama's part so when the photos get out like he wants he can say he didn't want them out. You trust this guy at all?

Seriously, give a rationale explanation as to how the circumstances changed so drastically, that could justify the blatant contradiction he finds himself in now.

Your assertion might hold water barring some event, or something which tips a balance. But essentially nothing has changed on the ground, to explain why he is going against his own campaign promises & rhetoric so soon.

This issue is going to be very interesting in the next few weeks. From the NY Times:

But some liberals and human rights groups said they were stunned by what some of them called a betrayal. They said the prospect of the new administration presiding over military trials at Guantánamo would hurt Mr. Obama’s efforts to improve relationships around the world and would embroil the administration in years of legal battles.

The executive director of Human Rights First, Elisa Massimino, called the commission system of trying war crimes cases irredeemable. “Tinkering with the machinery of military commissions will not remove the taint of Guantánamo from future prosecutions,” Ms. Massimino said.

The executive director of the American Civil Liberties Union, Anthony D. Romero, said he was preparing an advertising campaign that would call the use of an inferior legal system to try detainees “the Bush Obama doctrine.”

Thought Buchanan had no shame? Think again....
Buchanan Web forum disappears after Holocaust denial thread surfaces

The personal Web site of MSNBC commentator Pat Buchanan removed its discussion forums after a critic pointed out that the site was hosting a forum on Holocaust denial.

The "Buchanan Brigade Forum" on Buchanan.org disappeared earlier this week, just hours after a New York Daily News Op-Ed by Menachem Rosensaft on Tuesday noted the existence of a forum thread devoted to "Discussion about 'The Holocaust.'" The thread included comments such as "there simply were not gas chambers or mass crematoriums at any of the German internment camps" and "I would like to see some rebuttal from Holocaust believers."

Rosensaft, general counsel at the World Jewish Congress and the son of Holocaust survivors, had criticized MSNBC in the column for employing Buchanan while it dumped Don Imus two years ago for making racially insensitive remarks.

It is not clear if Buchanan knew about the Holocaust denial thread. According to records of the forum saved by Rosensaft before it disappeared, it was started on March 27 by a registered member of the site under the topic of "Disinformation, Deception and Other Tricks." An e-mail to a site administrator for the Buchanan Web site, which also includes his syndicated columns and other news, went unanswered.

I'm not sure about the timing but I'm pretty sure LGF beat the NY Daily News to the story by a day or two.

Holder tried like hell to get our "allies" to take the Guantanamo inmates off our hands. They all refused. Then he had some members of Congress float the "idea" to import them into the U.S. as legal immigrants, with full government assistance. (I'd favor that plan if they were given free run of the White House, and free access to the President and his family./) That didn't seem to fly either.

So Obama has reluctantly returned to the Bush strategy, kicking and screaming. That's not exactly praiseworthy, Charles, although I won't condemn it.

What's next are the really tough battles - getting his budget through Congress, promoting universal health care coverage, and generally trying to govern. The Executive holds the bully pulpit, but not much in the way of actual power to pass legislation; even though his own party controls Congress, they are their own masters and exist solely to serve their own interests. In order to get his proposals through this gauntlet, he needs to bring public opinion to bear on it's membership. Moving toward the center is a time-honored way of accomplishing this. As noted earlier, the middle is where all the votes are; the fringes may be loud, but they're thinly populated.

Something very similar happened with the Iraq troop withdrawal plan. I prefer him doing that rather then keep all his promises regardless of advice to the contrary.

A reasonable position, did you give "W" the same benefit of the doubt?

You really don't think the folks on the inside were able to get adequate information to him prior to the election?

Avanti, he excoriated the current process while running for the job. At the very least, he could have been vague about how he would deal with this if he got.

He threw the red meat out there. As someone from a military background, it should bother you on some level, this is tantamount to using part of the military as a political pawn in the campaign running up.

Again, to try and pass this off as him not having all the facts, when anybody with an interest in politics has enough of a gut instinct to at least measure the prospect that things "might" change once you have all the facts. He was in full nose dive, and now reversing course.

This is cheap.

He is reversing himself and making decisions that a 5 year old should have been able to understand. He is a dangerously naive amateur and we will pay the price for his 'education'.

I hope you meant that as a rhetorical question. Because the answer is "OF COURSE FUCKING NOT". And the rationale will be that that was because Bush was an eeeeevil Republican, focused on enriching his friends and shredding the Constitution. Any fool knows that.

His modus operandi is to plow blindly forward arching further to the left until he breaks something, reverses, goes the other way until he plows into something, does it again. It is like watching one of those cordless automatic vacuum cleaners do policy.

Nutria are indeed those big rat-like things they have in Louisiana. I believe they were protected for a while, and are now major pests.

Nutria was a very popular fur in the first half of the 20th century, for coats, hats and trim. Very nice, and much less expensive than mink, sable, or weasel (ermine), considered better than squirrel--more on the level of Persian lamb (karakul).

Even more popular than the Nauga, which sadly was hunted to extinction in the mad quest to satsfy an insatiable need for orange furniture.........

Heh. Looks like ODS isn't just for the nuts on the right anymore.

Lady at the bar last night, from Illinois, was telling me in all seriousness that Obama was a "closet Republican" and didn't care about the common people. I went trolling and suggested that this would have applied better to Clinton, who ruled centre-Right on that front in six out of his eight years. No, no, she said; Clinton cared about The People.

I can't say this is going to be a general movement but I do predict a rise in meltdowns from the Left. :^)

Also, the article in the WaPo today about the "buy American" affidavits that municipalities are being "encouraged" to sign before they get bailout funds.

It's a travesty.

I think the restrictions on evidence will cause many of the detainees to be acquitted or have cases dismissed.Every single on of them will claim that evidence was obtained by "degrading" means, however that is vaguely defined. They already claim that splashing water on their faces is torture, so a female interrogator may be "degrading".

German far-right party fined for accounting irregularities

A court has upheld the German parliament's decision to fine a far-right party for accounting irregularities but halved the amount it must pay.

The National Democratic Party appealed to the Berlin administrative court against the fine of around $3.4 million imposed in March. The court ruled Friday that the fine was justified but too high, and decreased the amount. The National Democratic Party has no seats in the federal parliament but is represented in two of Germany's 16 state legislatures.

re: #408 buzzsawmonkey

Nutria was a very popular fur in the first half of the 20th century, for coats, hats and trim.

Although there have also been some not-highly-successful attempts to promote nutria as a source of meat, NB that the name of the species has nothing etymologically to do with "nutrition." Rather, this is yet another instance of the "n" from an indefinite article -- in this case, Spanish una -- getting detached from the article and becoming attached to the following noun. It would be as if, in English, the word "otter" got turned into "notter," via "an otter."

And in fact, the words "nutria" and "otter" are related, but the ancestral Indo-European form was something like udros -- i.e., the oldest form started with a vowel, not an "n". It became lutra in Latin, possibly by association with lutum, the Latin word for "mud." Presumably, after Spanish diverged from Latin, lutra was at some point misanalyzed as la utra ("the otter") and subsequently the phrase una utra ("an otter") became una nutra, so that finally modern Spanish ended up with nutria as the generic term for otter-like creatures.

re: #422 buzzsawmonkey

I, of course, was playing with "nutria" and "nutrition" merely to help the fur fly during the punfest.

"Nutria," of course, ought not be confused with "nutrianos" -- hypothetical aquatic rodents that are the size of beavers yet have no mass, allowing them to travel through solid matter at near-light speeds.
