An Open Letter to Oprah Winfrey

Health • Views: 2,578

Shirley Wu says it all in this open letter to Oprah, about her disastrous decision to give a talk show to anti-vaccination kook Jenny McCarthy:

Dear Oprah,

I have to confess, I have never watched more than a few minutes of your show. Probably not the best way to start a letter to you, but I want to be honest. And the truth is, I think you’re making a terrible mistake.

Last weekend, I spent more time listening to and watching you than in the rest of my life combined. My family and I were sitting in the Duke stadium, looking down on the thousands of giddy graduates (including my older brother), the esteemed faculty in their rainbow regalia, and the charming, if a bit over the top, fake castle festooned with flags representing the different academic schools. I had no idea you were the commencement speaker until the student speaker, Robert Paul Jones, pretended to get a cell phone call from Parking & Transportation services about your limo double-parked in front of the chapel.

Having only seen you in short commercial clips and on the cover of your magazine, I wasn’t sure what to expect from your speech. I was pleasantly surprised. You were warm and funny, your voice clear and yet dressed with feeling, and I am sure you meant every word. Over the course of those 20 or 30 minutes, I developed a great respect for you as a talented speaker.

But I couldn’t leave the stadium wholly inspired by you, as I’m sure many others did. To me, it is clear that a significant number of people look up to you, and trust your advice and judgment. That is why it is such a huge mistake for you to endorse Jenny McCarthy with her own show on your network.

Surely you must realize that McCarthy is neither a medical professional nor a scientist. And yet she acts as a spokesperson for the anti-vaccination movement, a movement that directly impacts people’s health. Claims that vaccines are unsafe and cause autism have been refuted time after time, but their allure persists in part because of high-profile champions for ignorance like McCarthy. In fact, ten of the thirteen authors of the paper that sparked the modern anti-vaccination movement retracted the explosive conclusions they made due to insufficient evidence. Furthermore, it is now clear that the study’s main author, Andrew Wakefield, falsified data to support these shaky conclusions.

We have come close to eradicating life-threatening and crippling illnesses because of vaccines, but are now struggling to prevent outbreaks because of parents’ philosophical beliefs that vaccines are harmful. Realize this: when someone chooses not to vaccinate their child, they aren’t just putting their own child at risk, they are putting everyone else around them at risk. Diseases with vaccines should normally be of little concern even to unprotected individuals due to herd immunity – with the majority of the population immune, unprotected individuals are less likely to come into contact with the pathogen. Unfortunately, herd immunity disintegrates as fewer people are vaccinated, putting everyone who hasn’t yet been vaccinated at greater risk for infection. Now, the rates of infection by diseases for which we have safe and effective vaccines are climbing, thanks to anti-vaccination activists like Jenny McCarthy.

You reach millions of people everyday and your words and endorsements carry an incredible amount of weight. If you say to buy a certain book, people will buy it. If you do a segment on a certain charity, people will contribute. And if you say that what Jenny McCarthy is saying has merit, people will believe you.

Oprah gives the appearance of having wisdom and insight. If she retracts this offer to Jenny McCarthy, she'll have backed up how she presents herself. If not, she's proven she's just a shill in search of ratings.

4 sneezey  Mon, May 18, 2009 6:07:24pm

McCarthy is contributing to the spread of diseases whose cures were found decades ago. How are people like this given a podium to speak from?

5 gmsc  Mon, May 18, 2009 6:07:31pm

Some people who were vaccinated became Ron Paul supporters, so maybe we shouldn't vaccinate anybody anymore.

We live in a era where the court jesters can displace real scientists.

Is it any wonder kids want to be rock stars and not rocket scientists or comedians and not cardiologists?

Sad commentary.

I've been thinking about this and I've come to what I think the reason Oprah is giving Jenny McCarthy her own show. It's not really about ideas, it's about the following; Jenny McCarthy has an engaging persona, her nutty ideas have given her a following, and she's still a knockout in the looks department. That trifecta is the reason McCarthy is getting her own show. In a way, that makes it worse: Oprah is letting a lunatic have a platform in order to line her wallet. Bad, lethal, sick.

Apologies to all of you fighting the good battle of science, but the above quoted sentence is all that matters.

Oprah exists to sell products. To do so she needs viewers. Obviously her anti-vaxx crusade is accomplishing that mission.

22 _RememberTonyC  Mon, May 18, 2009 6:13:33pm

Maybe Jenny can invite Dr Oz (another Oprah creation) to come on and offer HIS opinion on vaccinations.

23 Shug  Mon, May 18, 2009 6:13:57pm

Better yet : Invite Jenny McCarthy and Fire Marshall Bill on the same stage with Dr Oz and let him shred their bullcrap pesudoscience.

Silencing Jenny Mccarthy by not giving her a show isn't enough.

She must be publically exposed and refuted.

Doing this will save lives

Sadly, men as wise as you are a minority. Most men are more attracted to looks and Jenny McCarthy is not actually stupid. She's far worse: Her actions display the willful blindness of a fanatic. Fanatics often believe stupid things but they are sometimes able to draw other people in with their conviction to The Cause.

Correction. She claims she's gotten people to read, and I suppose on surveys, there will be people who also make such claims...and maybe even bookstores will make such claims...however, have there been any actual reading comprehension tests conducted? The strange thing is that this will have absolutely no effect on Winfrey. It will take a sustained effort and financial harm to Winfrey's many holdings to get her to cease and desist her support of McCarthy's anti-science aniti-vaccine nonsense.

Winfrey has a bully pulpit from which she can greatly affect public health in a positive manner, and yet she goes with McCarthy's nonsensical ravings.

My husband bought me some face moisturizer that contains Dead Sea minerals. I have been using it for weeks, but I can't seem to be 'using' any of it. It is a little like a pasta bowl when you keep eating and eating yet the level never seems to go down. I don't know if it is a Christian thing - loaves and fishes. Maybe it is a Hollywood thing - Monty Woolley's bottle of brandy in The Bishop's Wife. Is there a Jewish 'thing' that might explain this?

Every year someone in the Heart Defect community - usually a Heart Mom - will start wanting to "Contact Oprah about CHD kids! She'll put some of us on TV and raise awareness!" It never happens.

If you aren't a celebrity, have an Ostrich growing out of your head, or have a problem that can be solved in less than an hour by Oprahly advice, your ass isn't touching Oprah's couch.

People who know how to get Oprah's attention can do it without writing "open letters."

Long story short, I hate Los Angeles and everything it stands for. We moved down here at a very impressionable age in my life and that was the height of their most recent dynasty. I already hated them before because I'm a Suns fan and they are my division rival. I also have two older brothers who have hated them since I was in diapers.

Simply put, the Lakers ARE Los Angeles to me, and vice versa. I hate everything about them, their fans and the fans' lack of intelligence (most unintelligent base in all of sports), their players, their management, the songs they play, guys like Fisher and Horry, their media attention, I could go on and on and on.

He came home the other day and said the Special Ed team claims that all the autistic children in this very large district (largest in the area) come from the same housing development, which they also claim is located under power lines... which led me to wonder if anyone has tried spacial mapping occurrences of autism, like they do with children's blood lead levels.

Oprah is just what you see on TV; two dimensions, height and width, but no real depth which is why she's so popular. She tells people how to think, what to read and presents herself as an intellectual, which she is not, she's just playing one on TV. She's been very successful in selling her image but, in reality, she's nothing more than a con-artist and a bit more classy version of Jerry Springer.

Will she back down on this? I doubt it. As someone mentioned above, it would make her look fallible and not completely in control and that's bad for the image. Better for her to go through with it, then move on and pretend it didn't happen. People will buy that because, well, she's "OPRAH!".

I never said she was stupid, I said she was a dimwit. A dimwit from failing to exercise her brain to see the dangers. A dimwit for letting a dogma be her guiding light.

re: #21 freetoken

Apologies to all of you fighting the good battle of science, but the above quoted sentence is all that matters.

Oprah exists to sell products. To do so she needs viewers. Obviously her anti-vaxx crusade is accomplishing that mission.

It appears you missed the point of that sentence. The only reason Shirley Wu "spent more time listening to and watching [Oprah] than in the rest of [her] life combined" last Sunday was because she happened to be attending her brother's commencement at which Oprah was delivering the address. Not because of Oprah's misguided support for anti-vaxxers, which had nothing to do with her commencement address at Duke.

147 freetoken  Mon, May 18, 2009 8:31:53pm

re: #146 Lynn B.

That may all be true... but the bean counters hear just the fact that the show was watched. In other words, I really doubt that some meaning, some great existential insight, is to be appreciated by the people who sell Oprah to the advertisers. What matters are the ratings.

Let's face it... why was Oprah invited to be a commencement speaker? Because she has divined some great insight into life? Or, because she is famous, and thus brings notoriety to the school?

More direct to the point - whether Oprah is an anti-vaxxer or not, is of no concern to Oprah Inc. As long as Oprah remains on the front page of the mags at the checkout counter then all is well in Oprah-land.

ALL of the studies that purport to 'refute' a connection between autism and vaccines are on the Internet (in other places, as well, but gathered in one place at fourteenstudies.org) Informed people - INCLUDE Jennie McCarthey - are not "anti-vaccine"; her ideas on the subject of vaccines are spelled out here: [Link: www.generationrescue.org...] ; her main issue is to administer vaccines with greater care. Name-calling doesn't address the very real issue that vaccines in early childhood are up more than 200% over the past 20 years, but we don't have less sick and dying children; we have more children with chronic, debilitating illnesses. No country in the world gives more vaccines to children under the age of 24 months than the U.S. Are our U.S. children healthier than those in ever other country as a result...or not? Is the current U.S. vaccine schedule perfect...or should it be reconsidered, at least for children in some subgroups (preemies, proven weak immune system, mitochondrial disorder, etc.?) Asking questions doesn't make one a 'kook'.

153 Hawk  Mon, May 18, 2009 10:41:45pm

All I will say is simply this:
If all vaccines are good and you support that view:
please run out and get vaccinated against the swine flu.

The problem here is that too many "arm chair doctors" (and some real doctors) don't take into consideration that every person has a different chemistry/re-action to drugs - hence all of the "possible side effects" that are listed on every freaking drug commercial.

A specific vaccine may be great for most people. But that is not to say that another person may react differently.

Looking at the 1976 swine flu outbreak:
================================================
"What did materialize were cases of a rare side effect thought to be linked to the shot."

"More than 500 people are thought to have developed Guillain-Barre syndrome after receiving the vaccine; 25 died."

"Only about 200 cases of swine flu and one death were ultimately reported in the U.S., the CDC said."
================================================
More people died from the shot and were adversely affected medically than the flu.

The point I am getting to is that I am sure that mass vaccination can be a good thing. But for anyone making a blanket statement that it is good for everyone is just plain silly considering how biologically different we all are in regards to medicines and vaccines.

I had to be hospitalized after a typhoid shot while I was in the military. The doctors were not sure if I was going to make it. Obviously I did but not after being in there 2 weeks over a bad reaction to a shot. Obviously if the doctors were concerned (*sarcasm on* and they must be right - they are doctors right? *sarcasm off*) then it could have gone the other way.

Others in my squadron receiving the same shot/lot were just fine.

So color me cynical when such blanket statements are made.

Having a herd mentality is not necessarily a good thing.

An awesome letter. Of all the stupid stuff making the rounds these days, few come close to the sheer stupidity of the anti-vaccine movement. And it isn't just a threat to the health of those not vaccinated, it's a threat to all as diseases start to make a comeback and spread.

Oprah Windbag reminds a lot of Obama. Both have idiotic cults of personality full of followers who don't think for themselves and don't check up on what they say.

Teach the Controversy! Ask a thousand questions, and disbelieve the answers if they don't jive with sacred anti-vax dogma!

Because we FEEL so strongly about it, it just HAS to be true...

"fourteenstudies.org" has absolutely no credibility -- it's run by a well-known anti-vaccination quack. Here's a lengthy article about the ridiculous nonsense promoted by that website:

Welcome back, my friends, to the show that never ends, part II: Generation Rescue, the anti-vaccine propaganda machine, and “Fourteen Studies”.

These people can't produce a scrap of genuine evidence that the MMR jab does any harm yet they continue to rant about the 'ignorance' of those who disagree with their opposition to immunizing our children with it. And they are calling us 'armchair doctors' now too, for what? For taking scientific and medical opinion seriously, something they refuse to do.

What a bunch of idiots.

If you choose not to vaccinate please remove your kids from public schools and do not under any circumstance expose my family to them in malls, libraries or other public places.

Thank you- concerned father of 7 immunized and perfectly healthy kids.

@154-chemicalcorpse:
Watch out Hawk; you're about to experience the 'tolerance' of these people.

Yeah I see that. And the more people down my post, the more I think that this site is leaning more left every day.

For "open minded" people to down my post because I express MY LIFE EXPERIENCE and NOT OPINION just shows closed mindedness and an agenda.

And the fact that it was downed 6 times without ONE person having the balls enough to voice WHY speaks volumes.

I welcome the "tolerance"

@ Jimmah: You totally missed the point oh arm chair doctor. Are you saying that I did not have a reaction? Are you saying that I am lying?
Now, with that said, how can you sit and say that vaccinations are 100% safe for everyone? Can you? NO!

In saying that, you are saying that the very doctors who were treating me were liars, quacks or something much worse. I mean, they were the ones thinking I was going to die - not me!

If they are safe as you seem to want to insinuate in your posting, then please on please oh wise one, explain why I had the reaction

I'll gladly wait for your medical explanation. AND it was not MMR - it was TYPHOID. Comprehension problems?

164 Hawk  Tue, May 19, 2009 7:21:23pm

I guess I will make this post for Jimmah (and those who downed my last):

Until the medical field can explain why people react the way they do to ANY specific medication, then the problem will be that no one can with 100% accuracy tell that person A, B or C will not react or die from any specific medication.

Once they can do that, then a test can be done and then they can say, avoid medications X, Y, & Z.

Currently, we are playing Russian roullete with patients every time we give ANY medication (not just vaccines to be clear). Doctors are playing with probabilities and not absolutes. "There is a 1% chance person A will react to this, so we should be safe" - SHOULD BE.

While medication X may 100% stop medical condition Z, what reactions/side effects does it have on patients A, B & C? Are those reactions safe or deadly?

That can not be 100% correctly answered TODAY since every person has their own medical issues and body chemistry going on. We are not technologically there!

That is the point I am making and for open minded scientific types to down my post over that, shows a level of close-mindedness that IMHO opinion - is frightening.

Amen, Brother.... I really envy those who are so sure of themselves that they can actually think they KNOW it all... must be very comforting.

Well, we know what happens when vaccination rates fall too low for herd immunity to manifest; bunches of teeny tiny baby coffins.
