The news about Ireland’s report on Catholic reform school child abuse came just as I was finishing a terrific series of crime novels by author Ken Bruen, set in Ireland. One of Bruen’s novels deals specifically with the “Magdalen Laundries” run by Catholic nuns, and the terrible effects on children that echo down through their lives: The Magdalen Martyrs.

I highly recommend Bruen’s “Jack Taylor” novels, if you’re into noir. Taylor is one of the most interesting characters I’ve ever encountered in crime fiction; “flawed” doesn’t even begin to describe him. The series in chronological order:

The Guards
The Killing of the Tinkers
The Magdalen Martyrs
The Dramatist
Priest
Cross
Sanctuary

All of these books are available in Kindle editions, except the most recent, Sanctuary.

It’s hard to believe, but true: under a law Congress passed last year aimed at regulating hazards in children’s products, the federal government has now advised that children’s books published before 1985 should not be considered safe and may in many cases be unlawful to sell or distribute. Merchants, thrift stores, and booksellers may be at risk if they sell older volumes, or even give them away, without first subjecting them to testing—at prohibitive expense. Many used-book sellers, consignment stores, Goodwill outlets, and the like have accordingly begun to refuse new donations of pre-1985 volumes, yank existing ones off their shelves, and in some cases discard them en masse.

The problem is the Consumer Product Safety Improvement Act of 2008 (CPSIA), passed by Congress last summer after the panic over lead paint on toys from China. Among its other provisions, CPSIA imposed tough new limits on lead in any products intended for use by children aged 12 or under, and made those limits retroactive: that is, goods manufactured before the law passed cannot be sold on the used market (even in garage sales or on eBay) if they don’t conform. The law has hit thrift stores particularly hard, since many children’s products have long included lead-containing (if harmless) components: zippers, snaps, and clasps on garments and backpacks; skateboards, bicycles, and countless other products containing metal alloy; rhinestones and beads in decorations; and so forth. Combine this measure with a new ban (also retroactive) on playthings and child-care articles that contain plastic-softening chemicals known as phthalates, and suddenly tens of millions of commonly encountered children’s items have become unlawful to resell, presumably destined for landfills when their owners discard them. Penalties under the law are strict and can include $100,000 fines and prison time, regardless of whether any child is harmed.

I seem to recall seeing a movie, probably on IFC, about the catholic girls being forced to work in a laundry. It was pretty grim. I can't recall the title.

Thanks for the recos, Charles. As it happens, I just broke down and ordered a Kindle 2 with some of the money I earned from my first translation job since I became ill and got laid off last year. (Do I hear lizards cheering in the background? Thank you, thank you. Your good wishes and prayers helped.)

I hesitated for a long time but as a gadget freak and read-o-maniac it was too much. Just. Couldn't. Hold. Out. Another. Day.

It'll be here on Friday. I already own a bunch of Kindle stuff on my iPhone, so I can make a direct comparison between the tiny phone screen and the full-sized Kindle. The bigger DX was tempting, but I realized I'm much more likely to take it with me if it fits in a jacket pocket. Plus there's the matter of delayed gratification, which I generally find difficult. And the extra $160, which I can now spend on boooooooooks.

So I'm going to order the first of those novels right now via your link and have it ready for TGIF (Thank God It's Fun-New-Toy-Day).

Well, one book I'm wading through right now is
Dinosaurs and Other Mesozoic Reptiles of California

The book chronicles various fossil finds in California, and reconstructs ancient California. A bit technical and dry, but full of information. Supposedly the most comprehensive up-to-date overview of Mesozoic California fossils.

/PS Don't tell the Texans, who apparently don't believe that there was a Mesozoic.

Many used-book sellers, consignment stores, Goodwill outlets, and the like have accordingly begun to refuse new donations of pre-1985 volumes, yank existing ones off their shelves, and in some cases discard them en masse.

After that law passed, one local (non-chain) bookstore advertised here in Las Vegas, "Well, Congress has now made it illegal to sell children's book from 1984 and before, for your safety! We will comply with this '1984 book rule', as we are concerned about your safety as well! To comply, we will be disposing of all our '1984 and before' books during the coming week!

"All these '1984 and before' children's books will be lined up outside the back of our store, located at [address edited out]. Remember these are dangerous books! It would be horribly unsafe if people were just to come around to the back of [address edited out] and started taking these books for free! Remember, Congress has declared that these books are unsafe and should be banned. Please do not come around to the back of [address edited out] during this week and take the books that are just lying out there, even though they are completely free! Remember, pay heed to Congress '1984 book banning law'! Protect yourself from these dangerous books today!"

I loved it – and the book store can honestly defend itself by saying they didn't sell any such books, and even warned people against taking them.

Yeah, Serenity. The problem with the original series is that Fox kept moving its timeslot around. You never knew when it was on to catch it and see if it was any good. I never saw it on TV, just in the DVD Series set. And, of course, the movie. I saw that one in the theater, and then bought the DVD when it came out.

Everyone has different tastes, but this one really catered to mine.

Oh, yeah, Fox. That does explain it right there.

Put the series and movie on hold through the local library system. I need to rot my brain some more. ;)

IF, you speak from my heart on that one. I have never loved a teevee show the way I love Firefly. Mandy, you owe it to yourself. Just get the pilot episode from Netflix or Blockbuster and go from there.

That show (or rather my DVD copy of it) got me through some horribly difficult times. It's all about a kind of family, you see.

re: #82 avanti

Nice promotion idea, but the only book banning going on was in the imagination of some right wing blogs. There is in fact a new law on toy and books covering items made after Feb 2009, but nothing covering used book sales.

lead law

Publishers, librarians and others in the children’s book industry are still waiting for resolution on a number of questions that will determine how they can comply with the Consumer Product Safety Improvement Act (CPSIA). Pending issues include protocols for lead and phthalate testing, which would affect publishers of novelty and book-plus titles; guidance on tracking labels, which are required for all children’s books; and information on how schools and libraries should comply with the law, especially with regard to older books.

In addition, the industry is still hoping for an outright exemption for ink-on-paper and ink-on-board books. A stay of enforcement in February covers most "ordinary" books printed after 1985, which are considered safe enough that the Consumer Product Safety Commission will not go after publishers or retailers who sell them (even if they end up containing lead, as long as no one knew about it). However, state Attorneys General could still prosecute if they so choose.

...from that right-wing blog known as Publisher's Weekly!

Not intrested in the meat here, but rather the tusks. Fossilized ivory like that is legal to use for firearms grips. A mammoth tusk could yield some very nice grips for an M1911A1.

Not about a book but something that happened today ...

I was stressing so much about business today ... blah, blah, blah ... so went to a nail salon (therapy) ... sat down and the woman started working on my hands ... I looked at her hands ... she was missing two fingers ... I thought ... wonder how she feels taking care of people hands when she is missing fingers (now feeling really selfish for feeling sorry for myself about my business problems) ... then I started talking to the woman next to me getting a manicure ... she was really nice ... calm type of person ... she got up to go wash her hands ...

When she was walking back she was limping ... I asked her did she hurt her foot or something ... she said ... "I was shot." ... I asked her what? when? where? ... she said she went to India on a meditation retreat (can you believe it ... how ironic) ... to Mumbai ... she was one of the people involved in the massacre ... she lost her leg from one of the wounds ... she was shot four times by that young guy that survived ... (now I am really feeling way selfish about little problems) ... she also had a bad scar on her upper right arm ... she did not appear bitter ... it was so strange ... she said she had not experienced pstd yet but felt it could probably come still ...

I swear sometimes I get so caught up in my own little universe ... it was very humbling ...

Without meeting the actual person involved, I had a similar experience over the mother's day weekend. I got laid off last month and was doing some temporary work for a florist on Mother's Day weekend. I had to run an order of flowers out to a mobile home park for seniors, occasionally wallowing in self-pity and wondering what the hell I was going to after this temporary job. I get to the moble home where I'm supposed to drop off the flowers, but nobody's home. So as I'm filling out the little door-hanger I'm supposed to leave behind when nobody's there, I get a closer look at the car in the carport. It had a yellow ribbon and a liscence plate frame with the name of somebody who had the same last name on the trailer. Beneath the name, it read {rough guess on the DOB} March 17, 1964- September 11, 2001....

That link was just a accurate discussion of meeting the standards for new books, and talked about sales of used books not being a problem. Some other links suggest the government will arrest you for selling your old copy of Dick and Jane.
I just thought some would like to know there is no book banning going on. I'm sure the government will have to clarify the law since I don't think they expected anyone to think they were banning children's books when they came out with the lead standards.

Did you read "Twisted"? Very cool short story book. Has a sequel..."More Twisted".

I read "Twisted" but I'm not into short stories.

I really love the novels of Douglas Preston and Lincoln Child, especially with the very offbeat character, Agent Pendergast, the albino FBI special agent with a bunch of weird relatives straight out of The Addams Family. They just put out a new one, "Cemetery Dance."

Other authors I love: Michael Connelly, Jonathan Kellerman, James Rollins, Mo Hayder, Kathy Reichs.

2. Bet friend either is or considers themselves Poorly Paid - especially considering the prestige of their Last Degree.

If I am correct, the rest follows naturally.

Careful with your comments about Chuck; he may run out of people to ban on LGF and start drop kicking them from HotAir. I’m registered but am thinking about taking the plunge and making an anti-evolution comment. Looking for the right comment and the right time, I want it to be perfect.

Right now I’m reading “Why Us?” by James Le Fanu. Gives me a lot of ammo.

jsulman on May 20, 2009 at 11:44 PM

Le Fanu is an anti-evolutionist, hero of the DI, and sounds about at the right level for the HotAir crowd.

I promise you if this is true...There will be a time when I'm by myself that I will cry real tears into a pillow..This sucks!
Unfortunately there is some overwhelming evidence floating around the web...Charles isn't going to reveal it....The Goddess has Charles email address..She could be here in a flat second..It's on her now...

I'm surprised but hardly weepy....it's an insult to split this forum that Charles graciously provides for one that trashes him...wtf?...that is just poor manners imo

Not "well" educated in that he doesn't have a fancy degree, but is a bleeding edge technologist - or at least likes to think he is.

And is not really poorly paid, but *I* think he should be better compensated for what he does, moreso than he seems to.

(hope he doesn't read this)

Much more a middle-class revolutionary. I have not been able to suss out the roots of his knee-jerk radicalism.

(and then every now and then I find him advocating some free-market ideas, and sometimes I end up more the conventional liberal - and he usually fails to understand or believe when that happens, he's just completely in write-only mode when talking politics)

Late to the thread but, Hey!
I've designed several Bruen paperback covers for various publishers. His writing is generally spot-on but sometimes it leaves me wanting more. Very cinematic prose revealing his love of movies in my humble opinion.

Correction, the local affiliate has done a great job. NBC national will probably ignore the story. Talking about it would remind the public that we are still at war with Radical Islam.

I tend to think of LGF as a place where Charles challenges people to go beyond what they think they know. Some find it disappointing when the things they think they know about what he thinks about things they think they know about turn out to be their own assumptions.

Others find it invigorating.

re: #259 Killgore Trout

It's certainly plausible. If it's not her she can email Charles or another lizard and set the record straight. This isn't a big deal one way or the other.

Right, it's not a big deal at all. I'm no longer surprised at stuff like this - not one bit.

Even if I should ever come to the decision to leave, or if I should ever do something ban worthy, my respect for Charles and LGF and Lizards and what I've learned here would prevent me from ever going stalker crazy.

re: #236 Killgore Trout

It really is great term and there's a lot of nuance to it like "forget about it" amongst gangsters. I was using it as a "whatever" or "this is out of my hands".

If you are hip to that than you have to incorporate 'halas' into your vocabulary. Pronounced hull-OS it means 'over, finished, done, insult forgotten, completely finished' and etc. Its a final, mutually agreeable conclusion to a subject.

weird ...... i keep seeing this weird 'stalker blogger' stuff, and i guess i just wonder about what was it that drew them here in the first place. Charles' first principles and first interests and basic priorities haven't changed .....

Never be ashamed or embarrassed for having cared about something worthwhile. I learned a lot from LGF, and I love many posters–but I also love many people who’ve found themselves here. I felt that I was trying to serve two masters, and I was terribly conflicted. LGF HAS evolved, but I am still very conservative. That’s why I decided to leave.

On the basis of this last sentence, I assume that GOTC is essentially glad that Charles blocked her account -- since it means she won't have to deal with the temptation of posting even though she'd resolved not to, etc.

Yes, I'm the 'shit stirring talebearer' that some people were so steamed up about yesterday. To make my motives clear, for the benefit of those who found it easier to shoot the messenger and hurl schoolyard epithets:

I'm not a 'shit stirrer'; I just can't stand backstabbers - no matter how holy or pious a guise they don. And I don't take kindly to people abusing my favourite blog or it's community in this way. It's as simple as that.

I do understand that people were reacting emotionally, however, and am willing to cut them slack on that. No bad feelings from me.

That's what got me about 'goddess'. I wouldn't have been surprised to see her drifting away from LGF for the reason you cited - discomfort on topics like creationism - but to join up with that mob - that was shocking. You think you know someone -at least a bit - then you realise you don't know them at all.

Another excellent set of noir novels having characters with MAJOR flaws is the James Ellroy series starting with The Black Dahlia and continuing through The Big Nowhere, LA Confidential, and White Jazz. I've never read the first, but the last three are jaw-droppers.
