Four US Muslims Arrested in Synagogue Bombing Plot

Four US citizens have been arrested in upstate New York after an FBI sting operation; I had to search Google News for information on the suspects because most US media are concealing the fact that they’re Muslims connected to a mosque in Newburgh: Four Arrested Over ‘Plot To Bomb Synagogue’.

Four men have been arrested in a suspected plot to bomb a New York synagogue and shoot down military aircraft.

They had been sold “an inactive missile and inert explosives” by an FBI informant, US officials said.

A statement from the district attorney said the charges related to an alleged plot to plant explosives near a synagogue in the Riverdale area of the Bronx.

It also allegedly included a plan to shoot down planes at the New York Air National Guard Base at Stewart Airport, Newburgh using “Stinger surface-to-air guided missiles,” the statement added.

The suspects have been named as James Cromitie, also known as Abdul Rahman; David Williams, also known as Daoud or “DL”; Onta Williams, also called Hamza; and Laguerre Payen, who also used the names Amin and Almondo.

The complaint alleges Cromitie told the informant he was angry over the war in Afghanistan when they met in June 2008. He “expressed an interest in ‘doing something to America’,” the complaint added.

UPDATE at 5/20/09 9:10:47 pm:

Not a word about the militant Islamic connection in this report at New York’s WCBS TV: 4 Arrested In Plot To Bomb NYC Temple.

The Associated Press report just contains one hint of the connection: 4 arrested in plot to bomb NYC temple.

In June 2008, the informant met Cromitie in Newburgh and Cromitie complained that his parents had lived in Afghanistan and he was upset about the war there and that many Muslim people were being killed in Afghanistan and Pakistan by U.S. military forces, officials said.

9 Dark_Falcon  Wed, May 20, 2009 9:12:28pm

the initial report from NBC 5 in New York City did say the terrorists were Muslim. I have to give credit to the local station for that, though it'll probably be short-lived. They probably be order to stop meantioning the terrorist religion for fear of 'discrimination'. Can't let the public learn about those want to kill us, can we?

11 capitalist piglet  Wed, May 20, 2009 9:14:02pm

Trying to conceal such a significant fact about this group is just bizarre. Did they think no one else would report it? They didn't think anyone would find it of note, or what?

Crazy friggin' media.

F'tards. I guess they bought some dud weapons in the sting operation, according to CNN. It almost - ALMOST - would have been worth it to see the looks on their faces when nothing happened when they expected bombs to go off. Like, would they ask for their money back? Pr, what's the return policy on defunct weapons? Oops, should have read the fine print.

4 arrested in alleged synagogue bomb plot
Posted: 10:09 PM ET
NEW YORK (CNN) — Four men were arrested Wednesday for an alleged plot to bomb a New York synagogue and Jewish community center, according to the U.S. Attorney’s office.

The men also wanted to use surface-to-air missiles to fire at U.S. military planes, according to a criminal complaint filed in White Plains, New York.

James Cromitie, David Williams, Onta Williams and Laguerre Payen are accused of plotting to detonate explosives near a synagogue in the Riverdale section of Bronx, New York.

Each man had at least one alias, according to the office.ew York.

The charges are based on information from an FBI informant, the attorney’s office said in a written statement.

You're right - America has never been at war with Islam - just with the jihadists who want to kill us or take us over by other means.

45 freetoken  Wed, May 20, 2009 9:24:05pm

At least the Reuters article touches on the religious nature of the crime:

[...]

'DO JIHAD'

Cromitie said if he died a martyr, he would go to "paradise" and that he was interested in doing "something to America," the complaint said. Last July, he told the informant he wanted to join Jaish-e-Mohammed, a Pakistan-based group Washington designates as a terrorist organization, to "do jihad," according to the complaint.

[...]

Note though that only that particular version of the Reuters article included that paragraph. The one-page write-up omits it.

Yes, he did.

THE SECOND COMING

Turning and turning in the widening gyre
The falcon cannot hear the falconer;
Things fall apart; the centre cannot hold;
Mere anarchy is loosed upon the world,
The blood-dimmed tide is loosed, and everywhere
The ceremony of innocence is drowned;
The best lack all conviction, while the worst
Are full of passionate intensity.

Surely some revelation is at hand;
Surely the Second Coming is at hand.
The Second Coming! Hardly are those words out
When a vast image out of Spiritus Mundi
Troubles my sight: a waste of desert sand;
A shape with lion body and the head of a man,
A gaze blank and pitiless as the sun,
Is moving its slow thighs, while all about it
Wind shadows of the indignant desert birds.
The darkness drops again but now I know
That twenty centuries of stony sleep
Were vexed to nightmare by a rocking cradle,
And what rough beast, its hour come round at last,
Slouches towards Bethlehem to be born?

Ahhh Newburgh, New York! Shout out!

About 100 years ago Newburgh was a wicked cool place to be...

In the future it COULD BE... located right on the majestic Hudson River, very cool brick downtown, quality old homes, local Interstate access (84), ferry ride across the river to a fast train to Manhattan and etc...

Sadly, it remains...Newburgh...

In case you can't get to the story from that link to the JTA:

Four arrested in Bronx terror plot

By Ron Kampeas · May 20, 2009

WASHINGTON (JTA) -- U.S. authorities arrested four men who planned to blow up two synagogues in the Bronx and to shoot down military planes.

The office of the U.S. Attorney in the Southern District of New York announced that James Cromitie, David Williams, Onta Williams and Laguerre Payen, all of Newburgh 60 miles north of New York, were arrested Wednesday night.

According to the U.S. attorney’s statement, an informant working with the FBI this month provided the four men with a disabled anti-aircraft missile launcher and disabled explosives.

Last month, according to the statement and to the criminal complaint, the defendants photographed several synagogues and a Jewish community center in the Riverdale section of the Bronx as well as the Air National Guard Base at Newburgh.

They allegedly settled on synagogues identified in news reports as Riverdale Temple and Riverdale Jewish Center. No attack date had been set yet, according to the statement.

Cromitie, who according to the complaint told the informant that his parents once lived in Afghanistan, allegedly expressed an interest in working with the Pakistan-based Islamist terrorist group, Jaish-e-Mohammed.

“While the weapons provided to the defendants by the cooperating witness were fake, the defendants thought they were absolutely real," said acting U.S. Attorney Lev Dassin said in the statement. "The defendants planned to strike military planes with surface-to-air guided missiles and to destroy a synagogue and a Jewish community center with C-4 plastic explosives.”

Good one. reminds me of this.
King Louis 11th's pig organ

"The Abbot of Baigne, a man of great wit, and who had the art of inventing new musical instruments, being in the service of Louis XI, king of France, was ordered by that prince to get him a concert of swine's voices, thinking it impossible. The abbot was not surprised, but asked for money for the performance, which was immediately delivered him; and he wrought a thing as singular as ever was seen. For out of a great number of hogs, of several ages, which he got together, and placed under a tent or pavillion, covered with velvet, before which he had a table of wood, painted, with a certain number of hogs, he made an organical instrument, and as he played upon the said keys, with little spikes which pricked the hogs he made them cry in such order and consonance, as highly delighted the king and all his company."

Synagogue targeted in NY plot, four charged
By Mark Egan

NEW YORK (Reuters) ...

"Last June, Cromitie told an FBI informant in Newburgh that his parents had lived in Afghanistan and that he was upset about the number of Muslims being killed in the war there and in Pakistan by American forces, the complaint said.

'DO JIHAD'

Cromitie said if he died a martyr, he would go to "paradise" and that he was interested in doing "something to America," the complaint said. Last July, he told the informant he wanted to join Jaish-e-Mohammed, a Pakistan-based group Washington designates as a terrorist organization, to "do jihad," according to the complaint...

Representative Peter King, a New York Republican, said the suspects planned to undertake their attack Wednesday using a car bomb outside the synagogue.

"Tonight was the night the attacks were being carried out," King told CNN. He said the four men were all Muslim, one born Muslim of Afghan descent and three who converted in prison..."

Now, you can choose to just ignore that it's a problem or choose to slather it with thick layers of denial, moral equivalence, and political correctness, but facts are facts and modern day Islam is anathema to modern civilized society. No other modern day religion (and Islam is actually more of a governmental/political system) openly calls for the death or conversion of all non-believers, especially Jews, in every country on Earth in which it currently exists. Not only do they teach it to all observant adherents, they teach it from the cradle.

Of course, the person whom I thought ought to have won -- Alison Iraheta -- came in fourth, so I'm already disappointed. But the guy who won just seems so forgettable, and has no observable style.

Damn, is Islam a great religion or what? Less than a week after Iran threatened to wipe Israel out of existence in eleven days and the Obama adminisstration told Israel to just relax and enjoy it, the FBI and NYPD reeled in yet another group of radical Muslims fantasizing about and taking overt action toward killing their fill of Jews and infidels in New York.

re: #191 BigPapa

OT: somebody I know just pulled the chickenhawk narrative on me. I like them and respect them, but methinks it's time to call that for what it is.

Sometime around 5,000 BC, the human race invented this thing called skill specialization. And because of it, we have civilization.

When each person performs only one or a few specialized skills, things get done much more efficiently. I want the baker to bake my bread, the musician to play the guitar, the surgeon to remove my appendix -- and the soldier to defend our freedoms. I don't want the same person doing all the tasks, semi-competently. The very nature of our society is that we allow everyone to choose their profession or skill, and if someone wants to be a fighter, that is their choice -- just as it is someone's choice to not want to be a fighter.

It is no more hypocrisy to support our military while not actually being in the military than it is to eat a sandwich and not be the person who harvested the wheat to make the flour to make the bread.

Next time someone tries to pull the chicken-hawk narrative on you, ask them if they personally slaughtered the pig that went into the hot dog they're eating. Ask them if they went to Malaysia and tapped the rubber from the tree to make the tire of the car they're driving. And them if they picked cotton in the hot sun to make the clothes on their back.

And then tell them to shut up.

I was going to point out the vacuous fallacy that you can only support something if you've actually done it. That's just so stupid a postion: the confusing thing is where to start taking that apart first.

It's easy. Just say, "Do you support law enforcement? Do you want rapists and murderers put in jail?"

When they answer yes, ask how they can be so hypocritical. "When was the last time you arrested a rapist? Have you ever sent a murderer to prison? No. And yet you ask policemen to do it for you. If you support law enforcement, then why aren't you enforcing the law yourself? You have no right to hold that opinion."

A different way to approach the same position would to point out that society is like a cohesive body, in which different organs each play essential roles -- and each is still dependent on another. In order for the body to function, we need all sorts of specialized "organs" to perform specific essential tasks -- inventing the inventions, teaching the children, cleaning up the garbage, defending our ideology, making the food, fixing broken stuff. Each is a subset of the whole, and each needs the other. Hence, it cannot be considered hypocritical to support the functions of one part of the body even if you're not that part yourself.

Are the lungs hypocritical for requiring the heart? Is the brain hypocritical for requiring the blood? It's sheer madness to segregate some aspect of the functioning whole and act as if it has different rules.

The chickenhawk argument is fundamentally baseless.

I just returned from a weekend in NYC and was returning from a run in central park and passed a synagogue on the upper east side of NYC. There are some consulates, embassies and diplomatic residences in the area. There was a security guard, african american, standing at the entrance.

The building was set back from the street with outdoor foyer/entryway that was protected by a gate/fence of massive iron bars that were thick enough to prevent a vehicle from entering.

There was an overhang of the building and the iron gate/fence went completely up to the bottom of the second floor.

I was struck by the presence of about 25 empty strollers in the foyer area and I stopped and talked to the guard. "Wow that is a lot of strollers" His reply was, "There were even more here earlier they come for classes and day care."

This is the face of terrorism, and this is who these (I would call them scumbags but that would give real scumbags a bad name) monsters were trying to kill. Mothers, toddlers, working stiffs and the random passerby who stops to talk to a man guarding a synagogue.

WNBC NYC, which scooped all the others, did report that those arrested in the plot to bomb Jewish synagogues were Muslims. It doesn't take much to connect the dots from that.

From [Link: www.nbcnewyork.com...]

"The FBI said the Muslim suspects were angry and full of hate for America.

"Hatred of the West. The leader of the group, James Cromitie was concerned about deaths at the hands of the U.S. military in Afghanistan," and also expressed anti-Jewish sentiment, Joseph Demarest the head of the New York FBI said.

Read the full complaint

According to the criminal complaint, Cromitie said "I hate those f-ing Jewish bastards." He bragged that it would be a "piece of cake" to bomb a Jewish Center in Riverdale, according to the complaint.

He said his father lives in Afghanistan and he was upset about U.S. military presence there.

The fact that this type of hatred exists means that we all have to be vigilant all of the time," city councilman Jeffrey Dinowitz said Thursday.

Cromitie was the first to approach the informant, authorities said. He told the informant he has ties to the terrorist group Jaish-e-Mohammad. Authorities said Cromitie had 27 past arrests and had recently been working at a nation-wide discount retailer, authorities said."

Riverdale, NY has a certain atraction for the "religion of peace" apostles:

The Conservative Synagogue here ( I am a Riverdalian), was attacked with a firebomb on October 8, 2000.

If lynne stewart wouldn't be disbarred, I bet she would be terrorists lawyer in this case too.

NY Times article quote

The four men arrested Wednesday night in what the authorities said was a plot to bomb two synagogues in the Bronx and shoot down military planes at an Air National Guard base in Newburgh, N.Y. were petty criminals who appeared to be acting alone, not in concert with any terrorist organization, the New York City police commissioner said Thursday.

A federal law enforcement official described the plot as “aspirational” — meaning that the suspects wanted to do something but had no weapons or explosives — and described the operation as a sting with a cooperator within the group.

The charges against the four men represent some of the most significant allegations of domestic terrorism in some time, and come months into a new presidential administration, as President Obama grapples with the question of how to handle detainees at the Guantánamo Bay camp in Cuba.

I question the timing. /sarc

compare with the NY Post article

One of the suspects, James Cromitie, a k a Abdul Rahman, bragged that blowing up the synagogues would be a "piece of cake," the feds said.

"I hate those motherf - - -ers, those f - - -ing Jewish bastards . . . I would like to get a synagogue," Cromitie told an informant, according to a criminal complaint.

"During this surveillance, Cromitie pointed to people walking on the street in the vicinity of a Jewish community center and said that if he had a gun, he would shoot each one in the head,"

I should add that the Wall Street Journal reported shortly after 9/11 in a page one story that radical Imams, paid by the state of New York to "minister" to their flocks, were converting prisoners in New York State penitentiaries to radical Islam.

This incident is one of the fruits of their labors. There will be more. We will pay dearly for the folly of N.Y. government in supporting radical Islam.

interesting how the r.o.p. has killed so many people around the world and they are still plotting. what a hideous ideology.
will "self-respecting moslems" ever stand up in sufficient numbers to stop these blood thirsty acts committed in the name of their 'religion'?
until, that happens it is difficult to view islam as anything other than the scourge of the earth.

Woke up to this news in Toronto today. The CBS reports were tortured (no pun intended) in their avoidance of any mention of Islam. The suspects were described as "home-grown" terrorists "unhappy with what is happening in Afghanistan" who happen to have a "strong dislike of Jews." Over the course of several reports, the words "Islam" and "Muslim" were never mentioned.

However, Mayor Michael Bloomberg warned against stereotypes. He stressed that the Riverdale Temple is open to people of all faiths, including a Muslim girl who sometimes prays there.

I don't follow Bloomberg's argument. All of the synagogues that I have ever attended (mainly orthodox with a few conservative and reform) would have no problem allowing people of different faiths to attend services. Riverdale Temple is not unique in this respect, and it's clear from their website that they open up their doors to people interested in being part of the temple life. However, I think it's also clear that they will be participating if not as Jews then as people with a positive interest in the religion. So what is Bloomberg's point?

Would you wear a T-shirt with a Mohammad cartoon printed on it?
You might in Montana. Don’t try it in Mecca.

Why?

Because, Islam trains a small number of its most devout believers it’s OK to kill. And Islamic killers have been trained to kill anyone who insults Allah and/or Mohammad.

In Montana you’d have a good chance none of these Islamic killers would see you.

In Mecca you wouldn’t last five minutes. One of Islam’s killers would come from out of nowhere and kill you. It is that simple.

You don’t believe me? Ask any Muslim!

This article is about these Islamic killers and the fear they generate.

Islamic society is caught up in a self-replicating, endless cycle of violence and fear, driven by its most devout believers. The cycle goes like this.

The Violence

Each generation’s most devout believers train a small percentage of the next generation’s most devout believers that it is OK to commit violence in the name of Islam. This becomes an endless cycle because, part of this training includes instructions to kill anyone who tries to modify or stop the teaching of this violence.

The Fear

Because (1) these potential killers are trained everywhere within Islam and evenly distributed throughout the greater Islamic population (ummah) and (2) because they cannot be easily identified, it means any devout believer anywhere could be the next killer. Every Muslim is aware of this potential threat (fear) from these most devout believers. As a result all Muslims suffer from the same fear that drives the system.

The violence and fear created by these devout believers has a profound effect on Islam. It is at the core of what Islam has become. The violence/fear cycle is responsible for all the irregularities of Islamic society. It is why Muslims seem so pious (fear of a negative response from the most devout believers). It is why Muslims don’t leave the faith and why they don’t integrate when they emigrate. (The killers are trained to kill anyone who leaves the faith). It is why moderate Muslims never speak up (the killers are trained to kill anyone who questions the faith). It is why Muslims from Morocco to the Philippines riot over a handful of cartoons or a simple comment from the Pope. (The killers’ riot and others go along in order to look pious.)

This violence/fear cycle leaves a deep psychic scar on Muslim society and is responsible for what Islam is. Understanding this violence/fear system is the ultimate key to understanding Islam. No attempts to deal with Islamic violence will ever succeed unless they address the cause of this violence/fear cycle.

Describing this violence/fear system - the Islamic killers - and their cyclical nature is difficult for a number of reasons. First and foremost the violence/fear system is huge. Even though it is in plain sight, its sheer size and uniqueness makes it difficult to see. Additionally most Muslims (and non-Muslim apologists) deny the existence of these killers. Furthermore because these killers are widely and evenly distributed throughout Islamic society and usually never seen until they commit their acts of violence, it is difficult to connect these independent killers into any kind of Islamic cyclical system. Also because the system is cyclical, the starting point of the discussion is difficult to identify.

Let’s start by discussing the fear created by these killers.

Islamic Fear

I'll admit I'm confused by all the negative talk about the credit card bill of rights. Here it is, what are the bad idea's in the law ? The credit card companies fought tooth and nail to stop passage of the bill, and it passed with bipartisan support.

• Creditors cannot increase the annual percentage rate (APR) during the first 12 months of opening up an account.
• Creditors are required to provide consumers with a 45-day advance notice of changes in rates and significant contract changes. Rates that change due to a change in the index that the rate is based on are excluded from this 45-day notice requirement.
• Promotional rates need to be in effect for at least six months from the beginning date of that promotion.
• Creditors need to provide a 30-day advance notice of an account closure.
• With certain exceptions, credit card issuers are prohibited from charging a finance charge based on the double billing cycle method.
• Creditors are prohibited from charging a fee on an outstanding credit card balance at the end of the billing period if the fee is attributed to the interest accrued on an outstanding balance that was fully repaid during that preceding billing period.
• Consumers have the right to reject a new credit card after the creditor notifies a consumer reporting agency of its corresponding account.
• Creditors are required to remove information provided to a consumer reporting agency about newly established credit card accounts if the consumer has not used or activated the account and and if the consumer contacts the creditor within 45 days of its establishment to close it.
• If two or more different APRs apply to different portions of an outstanding balance, the amount of any payment above the required minimum payment needs to be applied to the balance with the highest APR first and then to lower APR balances.
• Creditors are required to provide a grace period for payments even if the cardholder takes advantage of a promotional rate balance or deferred interest rate balance.
• Creditors are required to send credit card statements at least 21 days before the due date of the outstanding balance.
• Creditors are prohibited from providing credit to consumers under age 18 (unless they are emancipated under state law, or the consumer's parent or legal guardian is designated as the primary account holder).
• For college students who do not have a co-signer, the maximum amount of credit extended will be limited to the greater of 20 percent of the student's annual gross income or $500 dollars. The aggregate amount of credit extended from all of their credit cards will be limited to 30 percent of the student's annual gross income (for the recently completed calendar year).
• Creditors are prohibited from opening a credit card account for any college student who does not have any verifiable annual gross income or already maintains a credit card account with that creditor, or any of its affiliates.
• Creditors are prohibited from charging a fee to make telephone and web-based payments. However, a fee may be charged for expedited telephone payments made on the due date or the day before the due date.
• Creditors are required to post their written credit card agreements on the internet.

The Washington Post is actually being forthcoming, although they've turned off comments. Surprise surprise, they're Islam converts who were apprehended AFTER setting bombs they throught were real.

[Link: www.washingtonpost.com...]

"They stated that they wanted to commit jihad," Kelly said. "They were disturbed about what happened in Afghanistan and Pakistan, that Muslims were being killed."

Kelly said he believed the men knew each other through prison.

An official told The Associated Press that three of the men are converts to Islam. The official spoke on condition of anonymity because the person was not authorized to discuss details of the investigation. Three of the defendants are U.S. citizens and one is of Haitian descent, officials said.

Payen occasionally attended a Newburgh mosque. His statements on Islam often had to be corrected, according to Assistant Imam Hamin Rashada, who met Payen through a program that helps prisoners re-enter society.

Helps them re-enter society...as crazed Islamic terrorists.

If it's the Newburgh I know, it is a humble apple producing community near the Hudson river. This country keeps changing into something I will not recognize.

The Newburgh I know is the economic armpit of the Northeast. A one mile by two mile city of utter poverty and regularly rates as one of the ten most violent small cities in the US.

Newburgh's Congressional Representative is Maurice Hinchey (Dem. 22nd District). This district also includes Kingston (another bastion of poverty) and Poughkeepsie. Poughkeepsie is not so bad off because they are on the East side of the Hudson and have IBM plants.

Maurice Hinchey was VERY opposed to the war in Iraq. He was also one of the few Congressional Representatives who tried to impeach President Bush. Given the rhetoric he uses, I would almost call him a 'Troofer.' I believe him to be very irresponsible with the use of his office and in some ways I am not surprised that these home grown terrorist were in his district. While not encouraging such things in his district he certainly does little to discourage it either.

It seems like a case like this might present opportunities to prosecute the Newburgh mosque for possible incitement to commit murder, if the imams were preaching hatred. Was the gov't monitoring this mosque to document such statements, if any? If not, this is a powerful example of the need to monitor such mosques for potential hate speech, so that they can potentially be prosecution for incitement to commit murder, if the evidence supports such prosecution.

291 Sabnen  Thu, May 21, 2009 3:40:27pm

The mosque in question is about the size of a cracker box and was recently opened after some work was done on it 6 months ago. It lies between Route 32 and Broadway on 9 Washington Terrace. It's so new it doesn't appear on Googles' satellite image of the spot, it was just an asphalt lot when the image was taken; 6 years ago? Where they met before that I have no idea. I drive by this spot whenever I have errands to do out 17K in Newburgh. It is a small facility and can't have that many followers.

292 Vik  Sat, May 23, 2009 1:25:42pm

From the sounds of this article, the mosque in question is a lot larger than "a cracker box."

The informant who ensnared the four Bronx terror suspects was the guy nearly everyone else at their Newburgh mosque had the common sense to avoid.

Driving a silver Hummer or black Mercedes-Benz, Shahed (Malik) Hussain arrived at the Masjid al-Ikhlas mosque Friday mornings and stayed for hours in the parking lot trying to chat up those who seemed to be down on their luck.
