Serbians to Biden: ‘Go Home, Nazi Scum’

In Belgrade yesterday, far-right Serbian nationalists held signs in parliament calling Vice President Joe Biden a “fascist” and a “Nazi.”

A classic case of projection.

BELGRADE (AFP) — Serb ultra-nationalist lawmakers held up insulting signs in parliament Wednesday as US Vice President Joe Biden, considered a strong backer of Kosovo independence, arrived in Belgrade.

“Biden, you Nazi scum, go home,” said the posters brandished by opposition Radical Party deputies during the live national broadcast of a parliament sitting which coincided with the start of Biden’s visit.

The Radicals, who occupy around a fifth of places in the 250-seat assembly, then pasted the signs which also labelled Biden a “fascist” on a notice board and hallway.

They all appeared in parliament dressed in T-shirts bearing the image of the party’s president, Vojislav Seselj, who is currently on trial for war crimes before a UN tribunal in The Hague.

UPDATE at 5/21/09 10:45:05 am:

More information on the leader of this lovely group, Vojislav Seselj:

Seselj famously boasted in June 1991, shortly before Serbia went to war against Slovenia and Croatia with the aim of suppressing their secession from Yugoslavia, that his paramilitary forces would not kill Croats with knives, but would gouge out their eyes with rusty spoons so that they would die of tetanus.[5] He made this remark in a broadcast, available for viewing on YouTube. When journalists ask him about this remark, he regularly replies that it was only a joke.

So, f*ck off, Serb ultra-nationalist lawmakers.

“Biden, you Nazi scum, go home,” said the posters

They were probably trying to say say "Biden, you nice! Come to our home!" but something got lost in translation.

Wiki on Šešelj:

Šešelj taught political science at the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor, United States, and then at Sarajevo until 1984, when the Yugoslav authorities convicted him of counter-revolutionary activities and sentenced him to eight years in prison, although the Yugoslav Supreme Court commuted the sentence and he was released in 1986.

In 1989 Šešelj returned to the United States where Momčilo Đujić, a Chetnik leader from World War II living there in exile, bestowed on him the title Vojvoda of the Chetniks. Together with Vuk Drašković and Mirko Jović, Šešelj founded the anti-communist Serbian National Renewal (SNO) party in 1989. Šešelj later split off his faction to form the Serbian Radical Party (SRS).

Šešelj famously boasted in June 1991, shortly before Serbia went to war against Slovenia and Croatia with the aim of suppressing their secession from Yugoslavia, that his paramilitary forces would not kill Croats with knives, but would gouge out their eyes with rusty spoons so that they would die of tetanus.[5] He made this remark in a broadcast, available for viewing on YouTube. When journalists ask him about this remark, he regularly replies that it was only a joke.[6]

34 MandyManners  Thu, May 21, 2009 9:59:42am

He was too violent for Milošević:

In the elections of December 1992, the SRS won 27 percent of the vote versus the 40 percent won by the Socialist Party of President Slobodan Milošević. His relationship with Milošević was amicable during the first years of the Yugoslav Wars. However, in September 1993, the two leaders came into conflict over Milošević's withdrawal of support for Republika Srpska in the Bosnian War, and Milošević described Šešelj as “the personification of violence and primitivity”.[1] Šešelj landed in jail again in 1994 and 1995 for his opposition to Milošević.

Some interesting comment from Pew researchPew.

"On issues, independents' viewpoints don't fit neatly into liberal or conservative frameworks.

This group hews more closely to Democrats than Republicans on social values, religion and national security. But it also is more conservative on several key issues including the economy, partly because of steady defections from the GOP, and more skeptical than two years ago of expanding government assistance, a typically Republican position. More in line with Democratic thinking, most independents support expanded government intervention and regulation in the private sector, albeit reluctantly."

NBC's 'Today': Not Fair to Pit Deeply Disliked Cheney Against Popular Obama

"Today" reporter Chuck Todd on Thursday spun the dueling speeches of President Barack Obama and former Vice President Dick Cheney as not "a fair fight." Speaking of the two May 21 addresses on the subject of terrorism, the NBC correspondent proclaimed, "Our latest poll indicates it's the most popular member of the Democratic Party facing off against one of the most unpopular members of the Republican Party."

In a follow-up interview with Republican strategist Nicolle Wallace and Democratic strategist Bob Shrum, host Matt Lauer asserted that with regards to issues like closing Guantanamo Bay and the use of enhanced interrogation, "this debate has been settled." He added, "It was settled back in November during the last election, when Americans chose to elect Barack Obama and move away from the legacy of the Bush administration." He mused, "So what does Dick Cheney have to gain or lose today?"

NAZIS, WHY DO YOU HATE JOE BIDEN?

Because he backed Kosova's independence.

C'mon, Joe, stand up so everyone can see you.

Keep in mind as well that much of the "There can't be moderate muslims" agitprop that the paleos and extreme religious right have been chowing down on the last ten years originated with lobbies and groups from Serbia.

Pristina. Vice President Joe Biden travelled to Kosovo on Thursday, receiving a hero's welcome as the most senior US official to visit the Balkan territory since Washington backed its split from Serbia last year, AFP reported.
Biden's US Air Force Two plane landed at a NATO-controlled airstrip of Pristina airport, where Foreign Minister Skender Hyseni and students bearing US flags were ready to greet him.
He then travelled to NATO headquarters in a helicopter and arrived at parliament where huge crowds greeted him with banners, reading: "Welcome Mr Biden", "Kosovo loves the USA" and "Thank you USA".

More scary shit in Belgrade:

An unidentified man entered Serbia's presidency building armed with two hand grenades on Thursday (local time), a police source said.

"A police negotiating team went to the presidency building to try to convince the man to give himself up," the source said.

"He left one grenade at the entrance and went inside with the safety pin removed from the second."

The presidency declined to comment on the incident.

It was unclear whether the building was occupied by pro-Western Serbian President Boris Tadic, who hosted US Vice President Joe Biden for a dinner there on Wednesday night.

Boris Tadic is pro-Western my ass! But I suppose, by the Palestinianesque standards Serbs are judged by, we'll have to make do with him.

For starters. My Serbian relatives could provide more details, if they didn't already distrust me for being Catholic.

There is a difference between being a Fascist and being a Nazi. Fascism is a form of government in which the state assumes the role of being a virtual religion for the "volk", whoever the "volk" may be at the time. The Nazi party was Fascist, but not all Fascists (e.g. Woodrow Wilson) were Nazis.

OK, I am getting SICK of this tripe...

However popular or fair Goldberg may have tried to be (and, given the tripe that usually goes into people calling each other "Fascist," he certainly tried to be fair), Wilson was not a Fascist. Just a statist, idealistic Leftist Democrat. Which is different from Fascism.

For one, Wilson had no permanent pretenses on power, and the much-maligned 1917-1918 "War Acts" (which, BTW, were VASTLY more lenient than Lincoln ever was in the Civil War) came during the crisis of the First World War, at a time when Germany was at the apex of its accomplishment and there was a very real threat of a Pro-German or Communist labor issue or revolt cutting the supplies and reinforcements the Western Allies needed to stave off the Kaiserreich.

Simply put, the AEF's assembly and rapid shift to France was a matter of paramount international necessity (if anything, far closer to a "ticking time bomb" than anything the US had ever dealt with to that time), and there was a real fear that the Reichwehr would simply push through and go into Paris.

Under vastly more LENIENT circumstances, indisputably Democratic and Center-Right or Right-wing nations (Britain, Italy, Greece) had instituted measures such as censorship and gag laws.

That Wilson only contemplated doing so at the time and immediately oversaw their repeal is not the pattern of Fascists such as Hitler, Mussolni, Peron, or Franco (who readily instituted such laws and harsher in peacetime and never repealed them), but of a Democratic-Republcian (albiet a statist one) confronted with a tiem of momentary crisis.

If we are going to call people "Fascists," lets at least try to be accurate, and unless one thinks that Wilson was a "Democratic Fascist" (a Fascist who sincerely believes in Democracy as a principle, and in my opinion an oxymoron). Wilson does not apply. Thank you.

Oh yes, and will the Serbs ever get around to realizing that bleeding ethnic minorities of materials and revenue and than reacting violently when they try to break away, and than defending their inexcusable actions is NOT a way to make friends?

120 Annar  Thu, May 21, 2009 12:08:58pm

The 'love affair' between Croatia and Serbia goes back a long way. During the second world war the Croats sided with the Nazis and did a job on the Serbs. When the tide changed the Serbs went with the allies and returned the favor. Tito (a Croat) managed to hold the very artificial country of Yugoslavia together for a few decades using the usual hard handed dictatorial techniques. When Yugoslavia broke apart the old rivalries resumed with consequences that will be problematic for many years to come.

What is interesting is that those who immigrated to North America get along fine. I used to go with my Croatian friends to the Serbian picnics and sometimes the Catholic Croats and the Eastern Orthodox Serbs would hold joint festivities.

121 Turtler  Thu, May 21, 2009 12:19:58pm

Annar:

Actually, it goes back even further than that:

During WWI, Croatia remained loyal to Austria-Hungary, and served as a springboard for the invasion of Serbia and Montinegro, where the Croatian units in general acquired a rather infamous reputation (though I must note that there was a significant Anti-Austrian movement that sided with Serbia and Montinegro) during an occupation known for its brutality.

Then, after Yugoslavia was formed, the Serbs sidelined the ethnic minorities (save the "Loyal" Montinegrins), and the Croats in particular were hit hard. When the Germans, Hungarians, and Bulgarians moved in, a Croatian puppet regime led by the Ustashe began to ethnically cleanse Jews, Serbs, and Orthodox Christians from their state (the NDH) with such vigor that the Germans told them to slow down to avoid international condemnation. Tito's Partisans and the Serb Chetniks, of course, struck back in what is probably a precursor to the conflicts of the 1990's.

However, while it is true that Tito was a Croat-Slovene, he courted the Serbs hard, and part of the reason Yugoslavia fell apart in 1991 was that Tito had concentrated power to such a degree in Serbian Belgrade that the other regions chafed under its control, and when Serb nationalists inside the Yugoslav communists tried to adopt Tito's powers, well, BOOM.

The most offensive part of this is the suggestion that Biden return to the United States. The longer he is absent, the better off we all are. As for calling him a Nazi, a fascist and scum- well, one out of three ain't bad.

Enjoy your trip, Mr. Vice President. Stay as long as you like- or longer.

When journalists ask him about this remark, he regularly replies that it was only a joke.

Does this guy write jokes for Wanda Sykes?

Bad Karma, Joe. You get no sympathy from me (you're a big boy).

That said, there are some serious problems brewing in Europe. The crazies are being touted as legitimates.

I remember Savage once saying the the hooligan in England is their only hope. when he said that years ago, I remember thinking, sadly, he's probably right.

Without taking a principled, rule of law stand, these hooligans all over Western civilization are going to cause some major problems. They're already beginning.
