US military: Iran nuclear bomb would be calamitous
Published: 05.21.09, 22:19 / Israel News
The consequences of Iran acquiring a nuclear weapon would be "calamitous" and major powers must act together to prevent it, the top US Military officer said on Thursday.

The Obamacare to Come
Dems’ health-care plans do not provide the reform most Americans seek.
...An employer mandate. Employers would be required to insure their workers through a “pay or play” mandate. Those who did not provide “meaningful coverage” for their workers would pay a penalty, equal to some percentage of their payroll, into a national fund that would provide insurance to uncovered workers. Such a mandate is, of course, simply a disguised tax on employment. As Princeton University professor Uwe Reinhardt, the dean of health-care economists, points out, “[That] the fiscal flows triggered by mandate would not flow directly through the public budgets does not detract from the measure’s status of a bona fide tax.” Estimates suggest that an employer mandate could cost 1.6 million jobs over the first five years. An individual mandate. As is the case with an employer mandate, an individual mandate is essentially a disguised tax. It is also the first in a series of dominoes that will lead to greater government control of the health-care system.
To implement an insurance mandate, the government will have to define what sort of insurance fulfills it. As the CBO puts it, “an individual mandate . . . would require people to purchase a specific service that would have to be heavily regulated by the federal government.” At the very least, deductible levels and lifetime caps will have to be specified, and a minimum-benefits package will likely be spelled out. This means the oft-repeated promise that “if you are happy with your current insurance, you can keep it” is untrue. Millions of Americans who are currently satisfied with their coverage will have to give it up and purchase the insurance the government wants them to have, even if the new insurance is more expensive or covers benefits the buyer does not want. ...
...Comparative- and cost-effectiveness research. In an attempt to control health-care costs, the government would undertake research to determine which health-care procedures and technologies are most effective and, more ominously, cost-effective. Of course, there is a great deal of waste in the U.S. health-care system, and if the government’s goal were simply to provide better information there would be little cause for concern. But there is every reason to believe such research would be used to impose restrictions on how medicine is practiced. For example, some reform advocates have said that when an insurance company fails to comply with government practice guidelines, workers should no longer be able to exempt the value of that company’s plans from their taxable income.
There is no doubt that other countries use comparative-effectiveness research as the basis for rationing. For example, in Great Britain, the National Institute on Clinical Effectiveness makes such decisions, including a controversial determination that certain cancer drugs are “too expensive.” The U.K. government effectively puts a price tag on each citizen’s life — about $44,305 (£30,000) per year, to be exact, under NICE’s guidelines. ...
Health care rationing is on the way.
Thanks, Obama and Democrat voters.

Relax folks, I predicted in November that Obama would be a neutered president by October of 2009. He appears to be beating that trend by a couple of weeks at least. Israel is going to be fine. We members of the Jewish faith survived Haman and Hitler. Obama, while dangerous in his policies, is also inept. Israel will stop Iran from their plot, the world will condemn her, while simultaneously breathing a sigh of relief. Like all crises, this too shall pass.

Having lived through LBJ and Jimmy Carter (to say nothing of Nixon and Clinton), it's not a good feeling to be hoping that the President and his sycophants aren't smart enough to accomplish their stated goals.

And now it's time to say goodbye . . .
Wayne Allwine, voice of Mickey Mouse, dies

He was 62.EW.com said Allwine began his Disney career in the mail room in 1966, then went on to win a sound-effects editing Emmy Award for his work on the TV show "Amazing Stories" in 1986.
Allwine became the third man to be the voice of Mickey 32 years ago and he has since been heard in movies, TV shows and Disney theme parks. Walt Disney was the original voice of the animated rodent.
His wife, Russi Taylor, has lent her voice to the character of Minnie Mouse since 1986, EW.com said.

Their problem is this. This was a strong basis for their popularity. Vote for our change. Since there is no substance behind the message, the only choice is to keep the straw man alive to be beaten. The only problem with the strategy, is that Vice President Cheney is not willing to be a straw man. So now, the liberal elite are resorting to telling him to lie down and take it. I will admit to disappointment that fighting back took so long. I am happy to see it happen though. Keep fighting!

If Only They Knew That We Understand [Yuval Levin]
When the most severe conservative critics of Barack Obama’s approach to foreign policy imagine the president’s thought process, they probably imagine it going something like this:“If I had a Muslim summit, I think that I can speak credibly to them about the fact that I respect their culture," Obama said, "that I understand their religion, that I have lived in a Muslim country, and as a consequence I know it is possible to reconcile Islam with modernity and respect for human rights and a rejection of violence. And I think I can speak with added credibility.”
The trouble is, Obama actually said this, in an interview with Richard Wolffe, cited in Wolffe’s new book (and quote here). It is an unbelievable mix of arrogance and naiveté — of belief in the power of Obama’s persuasive power (building on his personal story, as so much does for him) and belief in the power of talk in general. All the troubles of the world are just a misunderstanding waiting to be explained out of existence by someone with the right personal narrative. Oh boy.
I'm not so sure that his "gift" has been working so well for him.

Actually, what I'm thinking of doing is getting a flank steak or thick sirloin and marinating it while mowing. Then a quick sear on the BGE (takes about ten minutes to get it started and hot enough for steak), and dinner. Then make a salad and add some of the leftover steak for tomorrow's lunch.

Wind turbine noise suspected of killing 400 goats
Late-night noise from spinning wind turbines on an outlying island of Taiwan may have killed 400 goats over the past three years by depriving them of sleep, an agricultural inspection official said on Thursday. After the eight turbines were installed in the notoriously windy Penghu archipelago in the Taiwan Strait, a neighbouring farmer reported that his goats had started dying, Council of Agriculture inspection official Lu Ming-tseng said.

Speaking of propane, those who are prepping to buy ought to take this into consideration. Some outlets - particularly those where you turn in your empty canisters for full ones, aren't exactly filling them to the statutorily allowed limits. They're shorting the weights, and keeping the prices the same, which means you're paying more per pound of propane than you otherwise would (and you're running out faster).
I have two tanks, and have 'em filled at a local garden center, just in case.

Sorry. Old Knights In Satan's Service song.
You should know that snopes calls shenanigans on the "Knights in Satan's Service" explanation.
Speaking of which:
Nocturne
Round and round the shutter'd Square
I strolled with the Devil's arm in mine.
No sound but the scrape of his hoofs was there
And the ring of his laughter and mine.
We had drunk black wine.
I scream'd, "I will race you, Master!"
"What matter," he shriek'd, "to-night
Which of us runs the faster?
There is nothing to fear to-night
In the foul moon's light!"
Then I look'd him in the eyes
And I laugh'd full shrill at the lie he told
And the gnawing fear he would fain disguise.
It was true, what I'd time and again been told:
He was old -- old.
-From "Enoch Soames", by Max Beerbohm
Creepy, eh?

Only if Danica wins ... which I hope she does. I met her one time and she is a TINY lady. I'll bet she weighs no more than 110 lbs. I thought at the time that if she has the skills, her lack of weight would make her car at least 50 lbs lighter than her male competitors and that is a big advantage for her.

I am not understanding the credit card thing ... what is the deal with the changes that are about to take place? ... We have our workers charge gas, etc. on them and then we pay them off every month ... will you be charged now for anything you charge? ... will you still have the grace period? ... what will be the incentive to even use them if you cannot have the convenience without being charged a bunch in interest ... I am totally confused on this ... has anyone read the fine print? Yeah...the problem is that the consumers who will pay for this will be the ones with good credit because the companies will not be able to price the loans to those with less than perfect credit appropriately.
The possible good part of this legislation will be the limiting of the amount and severity of nasty surprises in interest rate changes. Things like make-one-late-payment-and-your-rate-goes-from 15% to 29%.

Alan Grayson to introduce Paid Vacation Act
Rep. Alan Grayson was standing in the middle of Disney World when it hit him: What Americans really need is a week of paid vacation.
So on Thursday, the Florida Democrat will introduce the Paid Vacation Act — legislation that would be the first to make paid vacation time a requirement under federal law.
“There’s a reason why Disney World is the happiest place on Earth: The people who go there are on vacation,” said Grayson, a freshman who counts Orlando as part of his home district. “Honestly, as much as I appreciate this job and as much as I enjoy it, the best days of my life are and always have been the days I’m on vacation.”
I can't afford to take a vacation...and I own my business.

Something downthread led me back up here. I had one of those BBQ's, it wasn't green but I called it a Kuboto pot. Actually I got it from a county pick up pile, I saw it and always wanted one but didn't want to fork over the money. That was the best darn bbq I ever had, it finally cracked and I chucked it. The thing I liked about it was you could put the meat on and literally go to the river for a few hours without having to worry about a thing, the meat would turn out perfect.

Mrs. Loader is a big American Idol fan!
Ahh, seen clips of it never watched. Mostly the massively untalented people who don't understand why the judges didn't get them.
Got a huge kick out the clip of Susan Boyle on the British version.

I'm not being deliberately morbid, but I can't stop wondering what today would be like if the Islamic terrorists in NY hadn't been utterly foiled by the FBI (and whatever other law enforcement org.'s deserve credit). Don't want to dwell on it, but we truly dodged a bullet last night.
I can't express how grateful I am that this is just a hypothetical. The last thing that this Nation needs is another reason to be afraid.
I haven't been keeping up with the latest, so I'm wondering - has the "They couldn't have been real Muslims because Islam doesn't allow/encourage such things" dismissal been applied, in the MSM, to this one yet?

Alan Grayson to introduce Paid Vacation Act
I can't afford to take a vacation...and I own my business.
Then, as a capitalist-pig-exploiter of workers, fire a few employees so you can pay for vacation time for the rest...but no vacation for you, you bourgeoisie lackey!

That is the way that Obama would handel a terrorist incident. I doubt that even a nuclear bombing would motivate him to be more aggressive than a kitten when it comes to actually winning this War that he wants to deny exists.
So, to summarize, you're saying he would be a pussy.

Certainly NASCAR has had it's problems with females. they've been fending off a sex discrimination suit by some former female employees. But without Danica, a lot fewer people would care about open wheel racing. And she is one tough lady. Remember when that other guy crashed her car last year and she got out of her car and went after him? Classic!
True. There have been quite a few women in sportscar racing. Milka Duno (who is famous for her little spat with Danica) drove in ALMS for a few years.

So on Thursday, the Florida Democrat will introduce the Paid Vacation Act — legislation that would be the first to make paid vacation time a requirement under federal law....
The idea: More vacation will stimulate the economy through fewer sick days, better productivity and happier employees.
Because paying people not to work will stimulate the economy.

Niilofur Farrukh: Unheeded lessons of democracy
An excellent article from Dawn. I couldn't put it any better:
...as Pakistanis muster up their energies to face yet another humanitarian crisis they must also pause to reflect on Talibanisation and its relationship to our dysfunctional democracy. We need to give serious thought to the deep-seated causes behind the presence of the Taliban...The Taliban managed to make inroads not because they are invincible or outnumber their detractors but because we, the citizens of Pakistan, for six decades have collectively ignored the lessons of democracy that promises equal rights and justice for all citizens...Dictators may have deprived us of our vote from time to time, but we as a nation have contributed to a system built on nepotism, expediency and convenience. Pakistanis clamour for democracy during dictatorships yet make a mockery..With most institutions having lost the capacity to function efficiently the masses feel a growing sense of injustice, deprivation and helplessness. These have created deep fissures in our society and gradually pushed us to the brink that makes us so vulnerable to extremist ideologies. The nations that have averted disasters are the ones that can find the inner strength, resolve and resilience so future generations do not have to pay a heavy price...For any tangible success the real battle has to be fought within each Pakistani as he/she struggles to re-learn the spirit of democracy.
Even with men like Niilofur Farrukh, Pakistan may not win its battle. Those authors who confidently declaimed, "The pen is mightier than the sword!" never had to deal with murderous fanatics who slay not just those who oppose them, but all who fail to actively support their cause by word and deed.
Even liberals may have to pick up the sword and fight to remain liberals! Will they learn this?

Here's one who did:
I was programmed from birth to be a devout liberal. My dad, a hard working first generation Russian Jew, would lecture me on a regular basis, "The Democrats are the party of the little people. The Republicans are the party of the rich guy."..When I was 26, I parked myself in the People's Republic of Berkeley, CA, the epicenter of the far left. I came as a liberal but soon morphed into a leftist as most people here do...So maybe you get now how hard it was, how disorienting and destabilizing and crazy making it was, when I realized about 1 1/2 years ago that I no longer believed in liberalism. I walked around in a confused state for weeks...The first step, I decided, was deprogramming myself from decades of liberal propaganda...if this lifelong left winger from Berkeley can wake up, hopefully others will also do so before it's too late.

For my taste, these solos (of some 50s blues guitarists) are exemplary because what is being played seems honest and, in a musical way, a direct extension of the personality of the men who played them. -- January 1977.
