Dear Margo: Our daughter started college a year ago, and we’ve noticed during her visits home that she’s not the sweet, innocent girl we sent away for higher learning. We raised her with strong Christian beliefs, but lately she’s saying that she’s joined an atheist club on campus and is questioning everything we taught her. Now my husband refuses to let her in the house and is threatening to turn her in to the FBI.
.....
How can I recover my daughter and keep her from hell?

A (Conservative!) Member of the British Parliament has today accused the Telegraph of engaging in a plot to elect the British National Party:
The Telegraph are uncovering a few cases of fraud, but not enough, so they are more than slightly embellishing some of the stories. I write as a case in point.
Enter the Barclay brothers, the billionaire owners of The Daily Telegraph.Rumour is that they are fiercely Euro sceptic and do not feel that either of the main parties are Euro sceptic enough. They have set upon a deliberate course to destabilise Parliament, with the hope that the winners will be UKIP and BNP.
A quick online check of the Barclay brothers and their antics on the Island of Sark is enough to give this part of the rumour credence.
I took a snapshot of Nadine Dorries' blog. (BackupURL of Dorries.) Dorries is the same MP who yesterday complained on that blog that the expense scandal has been making a lot of crooked politicians "suicidal". Update on the underwear soldier....
Gates Hails Soldier Snapped in Pink Boxer Shorts
Defense Secretary Robert Gates on Thursday praised an Army soldier in eastern Afghanistan who drew media attention this month after rushing to defend his post from attack while wearing pink boxer shorts and flip-flops, Reuters reported.
Gates said in prepared remarks that he wants to meet the soldier and shake his hand the next time he visits Afghanistan.
"Any soldier who goes into battle against the Taliban in pink boxers and flip-flops has a special kind of courage," Gates said in a speech to be delivered in New York.
"I can only wonder about the impact on the Taliban. Just imagine seeing that: a guy in pink boxers and flip-flops has you in his cross-hairs. What an incredible innovation in psychological warfare," he said.

Palestinian textbooks do not show Israel on its maps, as we have come to know.
Get ready for this:
An Israeli tourism poster is being pulled from the London subway after the Syrian Embassy complained that the map on it appeared to show the Golan Heights and Palestinian territories within Israel's boundaries, officials said Friday....
The Syrian Embassy and pro-Palestinian groups complained about it because the featured map appeared to show the territories Israel captured in the 1967 Mideast war — the West Bank, the Gaza Strip and the Golan Heights — within the borders of the Jewish state, according to the Israeli Tourism Ministry and the British standards authority.

Take one school principal. Squeeze on three bottles of chocolate syrup, three bottles of strawberry topping and another three bottles of caramel.
Smear. Top with six cans of whipped cream, nuts and sprinkles.
Ta-da! You've just turned Houston Elementary Principal Shawn McIntosh into a human sundae.
The 500-plus students in the Gilbert school recently won a bet with McIntosh. He challenged them to raise more than $700 in a penny fundraiser for the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society.

Give your college age daughter space to figure the world out on her own. Just as long as she is not trying to stop YOU from following your beliefs, she is just going through a phase. Reagan National would probably be easiest, since you can jump on the metro to get to Arlington, saving having to drive through the city. However, for considerably less stress, Dulles International and BWI would be good choices as well. Reagan can get pretty insane during the day.

Happy pre-Memorial Day to all (I anticipate being in a bbq-slathered coma throughout the weekend, so this is my only chance to participate hereabouts). In honor of this great holiday and all those commemorated by it, I would just like to make my annual toast to Sergeant Thomas A. Baker, killed in action on July 7, 1944, on Saipan. Sergeant Baker received the Medal of Honor for numerous feats of gallantry over a nearly three week period, culminating in his refusal to be evacuated following serious injury. His citation speaks best to his final moments:
At this point Sgt. Baker refused to be moved any farther stating that he preferred to be left to die rather than risk the lives of any more of his friends. A short time later, at his request, he was placed in a sitting position against a small tree. Another comrade, withdrawing, offered assistance. Sgt. Baker refused, insisting that he be left alone and be given a soldier's pistol with its remaining 8 rounds of ammunition. When last seen alive, Sgt. Baker was propped against a tree, pistol in hand, calmly facing the foe. Later Sgt. Baker's body was found in the same position, gun empty, with 8 Japanese lying dead before him. His deeds were in keeping with the highest traditions of the U.S. Army.
Sergeant Baker, I salute you.

p.s. If you are flying to DC to get to Arlington, the best airport is Reagan National (naturally).

FRESNO, Calif. - Fresno firefighters had to remove a wall and use an improvised pulley system to remove a man believed to weigh more than 800 pounds who was found dead in a residential hotel Tuesday night.
The 51-year-old man was not identified.
Fire Department spokesman Ken Shockley said the removal effort, at the Asia Hotel in the city's Chinatown section, was unlike anything anyone in the department has ever seen.
"It was a major challenge, and our firefighters were trying at the same time to protect his identity and the dignity of his remains," Shockley said.

I watched "Dogfights" this AM with the 12 year-old. It was about Leyte Gulf and Taffy 3. The CO of the USS Johnston, Cmdr. Evans, took his 2,400 ton DD out of the line and charged the Japanese Center Force--alone. One destroyer against several heavy cruisers and two battleships--one of which was the Yamato--the largest of its kind in the world.
"Johnston" took several 14" hits and was pounded by 8" fire from the cruisers, but it got in close enough to fire its torpedoes and blow the bows off one cruiser. The "tin can" was so battered, the crew had to operate the rudders by hand. 141 of the ship's complement survived the sinking. Cmdr. Evans' body was never found. He was awarded the Medal of Honor.

Heavy fighting explodes in capital of Somalia
MOGADISHU, Somalia (AP) — Hundreds of government soldiers attacked Islamic insurgents across the Somali capital amid heavy artillery shelling Friday, battling along streets strewn with bodies as they tried to regain lost ground.
The U.N.-backed government, which held just a few blocks of Mogadishu before the fighting erupted early in the day, claimed it had taken rebel-controlled areas, but the insurgents said they repelled the attacks.
One Somali reported a busload of fleeing civilians was hit by gunfire, and others told of seeing many casualties. At least 22 people were dead and more than 150 wounded across the city, residents, medical officials and an independent radio station said.

Greek riot police clash with Muslims over Koran mutilation
Hundreds of Muslims clashed with riot police in central Athens on Friday, who retaliated by spraying tear gas into the crowd - who were protesting over the alleged mutilation of a copy of the Koran by police.
Roughly 1,500 immigrants, many from Pakistan, Afghanistan and Syria marched towards the interior ministry and parliament in central Athens, clashing with riot police by throwing rocks and sticks.
Riot police retaliated by spraying tear gas to disperse the crowd, causing shocked and frightened tourists to run into nearby hotels for cover.
The immigrants said that during a police check on a cafe late on Thursday in central Athens an officer took a customer's Koran, ripped it apart, threw it on the floor and stomped on it.
Hundreds of angry immigrants immediately took to the streets near Omonia Sqaure, smashing shop windows and destroying parked cars.
Police have launched an investigation into the incident.

I think the Telegraph could do with a more stringent admissions policy.
It could - and that Barnbrook btw got himself elected to the London Assembly.

Celebrating student accidentally sets Peoria house on fire
by Eddi Trevizo - May. 21, 2009 02:24 PM

A Peoria teenager's celebration of the end of the school year soured after he accidentally set his house on fire Thursday morning.
The teenager, whose identity was not released, decided to celebrate the last day of school by burning some of his school notebooks at his home near 75th Avenue and Thunderbird Road, said Mike Tellef, spokesman for Peoria police and fire departments.
"The teenager dumped dirt over the flames to extinguish the fire and scooped the remains into a trashcan next to the garage," Tellef said.
The boy didn't notice that some of the remains were likely still smoldering and the contents of the trashcan caught fire.

Woman chases off home invaders with chili and broom.
When two men broke into her home, Wanda Bray defended herself with what she had - a bowl of chili and some household objects.
"The woman fought them off," said Capt. David Honeycutt of the Claiborne County Sheriff's Department, of the 58-year-old Bray. "She threw a bowl of homemade chili and got after them with a broom."
Authorities later arrested three men in connection with the home-invasion robbery, and two of them were also charged with a convenience store heist.

Plumber uses snake with camera to find cat in wall
May. 19, 2009 10:16 AM

MARION, Ark. – When Bubba the cat disappeared inside the home he shares with Cheryl and Phillip Albers, they knocked holes in walls looking for him, but he couldn't be found. Bubba's meows could be heard through the night last Monday, Cheryl Albers said, after he vanished following a visit from an air-conditioner repairman.
Bubba normally hides high atop a kitchen cabinet when there is a stranger in the house that he doesn't want to meet, Albers said. He wasn't there, however, after the repairman left.
Taking their cue from where they thought the meowing was coming from, the Albers cut holes in the walls of their dining room, their hallway and their closet. Then, they cut through the floor boards in their attic and ripped out insulation — all to no avail. The meows continued, but there was no sign of the cat making them.
Finally, on Thursday, the Albers called Roto Rooter.

Good thing Mom was home. Makes you wonder what would have happened had she not been.
Once, I dropped my son off at a park district program called Teacher and Me. It was a 45 minute "class" to get kids used to the idea of being in a group setting. I parked the car about 50 yards away and watched my son get up from circle time and run away. I intercepted him, luckily, and didn't try anything like it again until he was older. He still cried his first day of kindergarten, but he stayed put.
Problem is, there is tremendous pressure for Moms to "socialize" their kids and not much support for stay-at-home mothers.

My older kids got a view of what that early socialization was like. "Lord of the Flies". I'm sure there are some great pre-schools with caring and observant faculty but we didn't find one in our price range. When the middle child got fondled on the playground by a classmate who was passing along a "game" that they learned from their abuser that was it for us. The youngest three never set foot in a school until Kindergarten and they are just as well adjusted if not more so with their peers.
I'm grateful my wife can be a full time mom but the real secret to good socialization is love at home no matter what your parenting situation.

Afternoon, lizards! I posted this on the overnight thread last night but thought it might be worth re-visiting.
Here follows a salute to modern heroes worldwide:
In February 2005, Greenpeace protesters entered London's International Petroleum Exchange in a bid to block oil trading. "What they were not prepared for," reported The Times, "was the post-prandial aggression of oil traders who kicked and punched them back on to the pavement."
The Greenpeacers had barged past security guards and entered the trading floor blowing whistles and sounding foghorns, but traders fought back. "I've never seen anyone less amenable to listening to our point of view," whimpered a defeated invader, who apparently thought whistles and foghorns an amenable means of communication.
Hero quote, from a trader to an ejected Greenpeacenik: "SOD OFF, SWAMPY!"
* In July 2007, Glasgow airport baggage handler John Smeaton was on a cigarette break when a burning Jeep driven by a suicidal terrorist crashed into the airport's departure lounge. As Smeaton told The Times, his first thoughts were: "What's the score? I've got to get this sorted."
Sorted things soon were. Smeaton assisted police in beating down hard on the flaming Jihadi, then offered these lines to British television: "Glasgow doesnae accept this. If you come tae Glasgow, we'll set about ye." Last month Smeaton received the Queen's Gallantry Medal in a Buckingham Palace ceremony.
Hero quote: Take your pick. Besides "Set about ye", further Smeatonisms included: "If any more extremists are still wanting to rise up and start trouble, know this: We'll rise right back up against you. New York, Madrid, London, Paisley . . . we're all in this together and make no mistake, none of us will hold back from putting the boot in." And: "I did nothing special. I just ran in and booted a guy."

I don't buy "socialization" as an excuse for schooling or pre-schooling a bit. Certainly I want my children to have nice friends they can grow up with, but the point of raising children is to teach them how to be decent adults, which is not accomplished by putting them in with a barely supervised group of their peers.

That blog post you linked to is a satire of how "stupid Christians" think, written by a liberal, atheist feminist who fancies herself smarter than these "religious fanatics".
Dear God: Whoa, dear. While I am sympathetic to anyone’s devotion to their religion, you need to realize that your daughter is a sentient being with the right to reject your religious views if she so chooses. Your husband is pathetically misguided if he thinks he can call the FBI to report the "crime" of your daughter joining an atheists club. Ditto for the exorcism. This young woman is not possessed, demonic or doing weird things; she is merely thinking and questioning the religion she grew up with. I would encourage you to understand that all people, your daughter included, have the right to think for themselves, particularly about something as meaningful as religion. As for hell, well, she appears willing to take her chances. — Margo, contemplatively

RoP in Greece.....
Riot police fire on Greece protest
Greek riot police fired tear gas to disperse hundreds of Muslims who pelted them with sticks and stones outside parliament today during protests over what they said was the destruction of a Koran by a Greek policeman.
On Thursday, the Muslim Union of Greece reported that during police checks at a Syrian-owned coffee shop, an officer took a customer's Koran, tore it up, threw it on the floor and stomped on it. Police have launched an internal investigation.
About 1,500 Muslims marched through Athens to protest the incident, chanting "Allah is great" and carrying banners reading "Hands off immigrants".
"They started throwing rocks and sticks at police guarding parliament and the officers responded with tear gas and percussion bombs," a police official said.
It was the second protest since the reported incident after 1,000 immigrants, many from Syria, Pakistan and Afghanistan, marched to central Omonia Square on Thursday and smashed several shop windows and five cars.
"We want to live here in peace, we don't want trouble but we want the policeman to be punished," said a 30-year-old illegal Egyptian immigrant who identified himself as Said.

My last comment on LGF2. Slap me if I write about it again. It's like getting fascinated by a car wreck. I recommend disengagement from them. Don't create anymore karmas. Getting into a love hate relationship with them gives them street cred and traffic and fuels their needs. LGF2 is a site built on the emotion of hate. That is it's basic reason for existence though their newer posters are trying to change course. While GoTC was one of my favorite posters here, she is either naive as to what co riders she has saddled up to or she thinks her positive contributions will have a good impact on the site. There are some ok people there, but the site creators are not ok.
Wrath melted down here because he wanted to and he recovered.
Savage melted down here because he couldn't help himself. It is very easy to see why both were banned and blocked. We can see that savage still has some rough issues. I don't think he has a humanizing influence in his life. He probably needs one.
GoTC shouldn't be surprised she is banned here. If she is naive and went and used her same login and password at the troll site. Then Savage and Wrath of God have a new login to LGF. Savage would use it. The banned need to ask themselves if they are ethical and moral about these types of things.
If you're infatuated with GoTC get over it or meet her in some chat room or let it go.
The weakness at LGF2 is it's hate and it's mock up postings. I am not sure if it could even survive without that hate. The numerous posters who act like Ed the Weatherman(not a lgf2er I think) and try and slur CJ with naming conventions are juveniles. And further prove their banning here was appropriate. Ed has admitted it himself that he can't help it anymore. He has basically become a clown caricature of what he hates. Instead of walking away he became a loser. too much high self esteem there. And I used to like the guy a lot.
But I consider people like Ed and Savage a little unbalanced. I don't really want to be cruel to them, just give them a boost to a little bit of a better life. If that is the GoTC purpose at LGF2. That's ok to me.
I think posts here dedicated to anything about lgf2 are probably not productive. Best to leave them behind and move to what is successful. However I am always surprised that the weight that gossip carries in people, even myself. Not sure why.

What Pelosi knew about waterboarding, and when
CIA records suggest that Pelosi, D-Calif., was told at that time that the Bush administration was using waterboarding _ a simulated drowning. Pelosi, however, said on May 14 that spy agency officials specifically informed her at that session that the practice was not used. The CIA's records on the subject are vague. Here is a brief timeline on the conflicting accounts of what Pelosi knew, and when:
_Sept. 4, 2002: Pelosi, then the top Democrat on the House Intelligence Committee, and the panel's Republican chairman, former Rep. Porter J. Goss of Florida, are briefed on the use of harsh interrogation methods in the war on terror. CIA records describe the subject of the secret briefing as "enhanced interrogation techniques on Abu Zubaydah ... and a description of the particular EITs that had been employed." The Bush administration acknowledged in 2008 that Zubaydah had been waterboarded, and documents subsequently revealed that the method was used on him at least 82 times in August 2002. Pelosi said on May 14 that briefers at the 2002 meeting told her that the administration had deemed the harsh tactics legal, but that they specifically said that they had not used waterboarding.

Hmmm... So what exactly is Obama saying about President Bush's view of national security when Obama says that he wont send troops into war without cause.
What exactly is "for cause". What would it take for Obama to send troops into harm's way to defend the nation against threats?
We know what President Bush considered threats, and historians will have a field day with that decision (and I think Bush's view on US national security will be validated (and Obama's backhanded adoption of much of the Bush framework shows that to be true). Keeping the military under wraps with undue restraint is tantamount to displaying weakness to our enemies, who will instead poke and prod to see just how much they can get away with before provoking a response from the US. It's antithetical to US national security.

Going bald: Teacher to let students shave head
May. 21, 2009 11:59 AM
Associated Press
AUGUSTA, Ga. - Test scores are causing an elementary school teacher to lose his hair.
Garrett Elementary School teacher Dave Smith told students they could shave his head if they passed all sections of the Criterion-Referenced Competency Tests. Smith will go under the razor Thursday afternoon at the hands of 165 first- through fifth-graders at the Augusta school.

I heard on CSPAN on XM yesterday Steny Hoyer attempting to defend her. He read quotes of Republicans referencing not getting all the facts or potential deceitfulness related to intelligence. NONE of his examples had anything to do with the briefing Pelosi referenced and 1/2 were like 5 word soundbites taken out of context. The perfect gem was when he quoted Time Magazine without attributing a writer. Someone in the press pool called him on that one, "So you are using as a defense a story in Time Magazine?"
Hoyer, "Ahh, well, ummm, I'll get back to you with a name."

Hmmm... So what exactly is Obama saying about President Bush's view of national security when Obama says that he wont send troops into war without cause.
Nevermind what he's saying about Bush, we all know what he thinks about Bush. What is he saying about everyone currently serving in Iraq? That they went without cause? If the Iraq war is without cause and as bad as Obama has said when he was campaigning, than those fighting it are as immoral as the president who ordered it.

Sometimes I think the whole socialization canard is nothing more than rationalizing warehousing children while their moms work outside the home.
I've never heard it from a mom, even those who had to make the tough choice of going back to work when their children were still little. I have heard many preschool teachers and grade school teachers claim it is beneficial. I don't buy it. Too many kids suffer from too much socialization and not enough civilizing. The nastiest of the herd get away with murder in those situations.

Couple withdraws money, flees after bank error
May. 21, 2009 11:58 AM
Associated Press
WELLINGTON, New Zealand - Police are looking for a New Zealand couple who disappeared after a bank mistakenly put 10 million New Zealand dollars - $6.1 million - into their account.
The couple, who ran a gas station in the northern city of Rotorua, applied to Westpac Bank for a $10,000 overdraft and had 1000 times that amount paid into their account. The two then withdrew some of the money and disappeared, Detective Senior Sgt. David Harvey said.

LGF has done a lot of reporting on far right European parties but only on the western european ones
Maybe you should consider doing a piece about it
Czech far right party runs EURO election ad demanding final solution for the gypsy problem
A far-right party in Czech Republic which demanded a 'final solution' to the issue of gypsies has been exposed as having strong links with the BNP in Britain.
The National Party in Prague stunned mainstream politicians and viewers with an electioneering ad using Nazi-era rhetoric that called for a 'final solution to the gypsy issue'.In WW2 the highest echelons of the Nazi party in Germany sought the 'final solution to the Jewish question' – the euphemism which covered the industrial-scale slaughter of six million men, women and children in the extermination camps.
In the tasteless Czech ad the camera pans over dishevelled and dirty-looking Roma women and children, intended to show them in the worst possible light, before a voice-over says: 'We call for final solution to the gypsy issue'.
There were also slogans on screen such as 'Stop black racism,' 'No favouring of Gypsies', and 'We don't want black racists among us'. Czech bigots routinely refer to Roma people as blacks.
The Czech government has expressed outrage over the broadcast of the ad made for the forthcoming EU elections – and pledged that it would not be repeated – as the group’s links with the British National Party were revealed.
BNP leader Nick Griffin, in a bid to cement ties with proto-fascist parties across Europe ahe ad of EU polling, spoke at a rally of the tiny anti-immigration, anti-Muslim and anti-Romani National Party (NS) by addressing its rally to celebrate Czech independence in the autumn of last year.In his speech he railed against the accession of Turkey to the EU, saying that the introduction of millions of Muslims into the EU would 'drive down wages, living standards and increase taxes'.
Griffin's trip, accompanied by several BNP activists, followed an invitation to the NS leader, Petra Edelmannová, to the BNP's Red White and Blue festival in August 2008 in Denby, Derbyshire.
Edelmannova did not attend citing other commitments. Edelmannová was the brains behind the final solution TV ad and wrote a pamphlet last year which she had been intending to bring to Britain.
In it she stresses the case for 'repatriating the Czech Republic’s Roma population to India'.
BNP deputy leader Simon Darby conceded in a newspaper interview shortly afterwards that the phrase'final solution' was 'not exactly the best title for a document'.But he added: 'There is a Gypsy problem there. There is a problem in this country as well.
'Some of the Travelling community have been here for a very long time. They keep themselves to themselves and sort out their own problems within their own communities. They have the same morals as me. I don't have a problem with them.'
He identifies the 'problem' as being foreign Roma who have immigrated into the UK since European enlargement, along with an undefined group of what he calls 'homegrown pseudo-Gypsies'.
After the video was shown on Wednesday night in Czech Republic – a country that suffered enormous losses under the Nazis – Czech TV spokesman Ladislav Sticha said that the law obliged it to broadcast the 'election clips exactly in the shape submitted by the parties, without altering them and without bearing responsibility'.
Politicians have said the ad will however be banned and there is also a movement in the parliament for an outright ban on the NS.
First of all WTF at that Czech party srsly
and second lol at the BNP now I get it it is only the phrasing of the proposal that is bad

Funny thing is, when I lived in Michigan, some of the locals of Dutch descent would look down their noses at anybody who wasn't blond and blue-eyed, because "if you ain't Dutch, you ain't much."
Now, I'm not objecting to their pride in their heritage. But I've been to the Netherlands, and I can tell you, this brown-eyed brunette fit in easily among the actual Dutch. Heck, they kept asking me for directions.
So apparently, most of the Dutch blonds moved to Michigan!

Charles,
I'm very concerned about your statements and the unintended consequences. Saying the things you do might increase your hate mail and occasionally cause people to make weird references about your sexuality. It might get really bad, so much so that they use swear words and call you a Nazi. Some more freaky ones may imply a veiled threat or wish cancer on you or your loved ones only to end a communique with 'Have a nice day!'
Maybe you should not talk about these not very relevant things, like race based nationalism or creationism taught in public school supported by the GOP. They aren't that big a deal, really, not that important. We should talk about much more important things.
LeBron vs Kobe is much more current and worthy of spirited debate, with a likely decrease in Nazi inferences or freaky screeds ending with 'Have A Nice Day :)'
Please beware.
Sincerely, Concerned Honco

She may not have committed a crime, but she made a blanket accusation that the CIA routinely commits felonies (because lying to Congress is a felony).
How anyone can expect her to stay in power, AND have the CIA do anything but look over their shoulders wondering when she or her friends will try to railroad them into prison, is beyond me.
And this vicious harpy is in line for the presidency if anything happens to 0bama and Biden.
But even with all that, you're probably right that it will drift into nothingness. (Shoot, we had a president commit blatant perjury to protect his own sorry ass in a civil suit, and nothing substantial resulted other than his disbarment.)
