If he believes that you think about the bible like he thinks about the Qur'an, he may have thought he could provoke you with that kind of a comment. A kind of a test to see if you mean what you say, or out of real ignorance of how to most of us, "books is just books."

Some sad personal news tonight.
My little dog, Roswell the Atomic Poodle, died peacefully in his sleep sometime last night.
He was 15 years old, born on October 12 1993, and had lived a long and happy life. He had been in good health and fairly active for what is a very advanced age for a dog. Like most poodles, he was amazingly intelligent. For example, he had a distinctive greeting bark for each of my daughters and, among other things, used it to demonstrate that he could tell which one of them I was talking to on the phone.
This is doubly sad because he was my late wife's dog. She did not tell me she was getting him. I did not like small dogs at the time, and was horrified when she brought him home. "300 bucks for a hairball that makes messes on the carpet!" She won the ensuing argument, as usual. I eventually grew to love the little guy. I would swear he knew when she died. He was listless and depressed from the very moment I came home from the hospital. He recovered, just as I did, and he has been devoted to me ever since. Perhaps they are re-united now.
I have put his little body in a safe place, and I will going to the expense of having him buried at a pet cemetery. It is the least I can do for the years of companionship and happiness he has brought us.

I had not given those things much thought.
As a window into the mind of a pro-Musharraf Pakistani, I thought his blog was interesting. I think it illustrates how difficult it is to navigate a strait path in that region. If he represents what the more pro-western educated Pakistani thinks of the US and the world, then it is clear that we will have a rough time of it with Pakistan especially during the Obama Administration.

I was thinking that he must have some kind of a flag for blogs and articles that mention Pakistan to have pick up on your article post.
If that is the case, he may well have heard about LGF.
I am inclined to give him the benefit of the doubt, meaning that I think that what we read in the one post that I linked to gives insight into who he is and what he is all about.
I don't think he is exactly what we would call a friend, nor do I think we could call him an enemy. We may have some goals and hopes for the future that are in common, which may be enough to accept him for what he is without feeling unduly threatened by him.
But then again, I expect the future to be very messy so I may be a very poor judge of such things.

The Goode Family is a new animated series from Mike Judge (King of the Hill, Beavis and Butt-head, Office Space), John Altschuler & Dave Krinsky (King of the Hill, Blades of Glory).
It's a show about a family that's gone green, or at least trying to.

I try not to think about it too much. When I do I look at it this way. It's almost June. June, July, and August leaves us 3 three months to "get cracking" in this country. Those are some of the most productive month for construction, infrastructure improvements, etc. Nothing is happening. Business is slow and construction is way down. When September comes everything starts to slow down even more. That means this Fall and Winter are going to be far worse than last year for my finances.

General Motors Corp. said Friday that it has borrowed an additional $4 billion from the Treasury Department, meaning the automaker has now accepted $19.4 billion in loans from the U.S. government.
GM started taking government money in December and said it intended to borrow $2.6 billion more by June 1 and an additional $9 billion after that. But in a regulatory filing Friday, GM said it needed $1.4 billion sooner than originally forecast.
I'm starting to think I'm Carl Sagan after reading these numbers. Billions and billions.

Have you ever seen something so evil that it causes you fantasize about kicking out the villain's teeth or something worse. I react that way when I see a grave injustice done to innocent people, especially to kiddies. Here's an ABC news item that I initially saw on New Zealand television earlier today. It's about charlatans in the Democratic Republic of Congo making a bundle of ill-gotten money by masquerading as Christian priests who go around accusing the little kiddies of superstitious crazed parents of being witches, and about the physical and emotional pain that ensues.
The director of a special commission charged with protecting children says it is illegal to accuse children of witchcraft unless there's proof. The interviewer responds with "But.. but that seems to indicate that there could ever be physical proof of witchcraft." and is told that witchcraft is apart of their traditional beliefs. The director is not ~just~ a fat-arsed do-nothing state official. He actually believes the crap himself. Yes, he believes a child is possibly a witch if he has black eyes, big eyes, or a bulging tummy...
Fat, useless voodoo-sodden piece of shit brick in the wall.
The hurt and the anguish seems never to leave that country. Anyway, I just wanted to post this as a way of letting off steam. See you later.

Mine got me on the leg....not bad...he's done worse. A couple days later I had a fever, chills and all, and that night my ankle turned red and started swelling, by morning the swelling had advanced to my knee. I went to the Doc. and got a shot in the butt, a liguid anti bio and some pills. Went back the next morning, got another shot in the butt, a double dose of the liquid anti bio and Doc sez " If the swelling doesn't subside by the morning I'll admit you and start IV anti bios." I checked the zoo website. One would think that a zoo website would be designed to attract visitors. You have to hunt to find out that this one is in Manitoba. I suppose you have to click a link or something to find out little details like what city in which to look, but there are no less than SIX (6) ways to donate money or buy memberships on that page. I guess you can tell where the promoters' minds are most connected.

As this thread is about animals, I have a favor to ask of all of you. It's about birds. I've started to pay attention to them, primarily because they wake me up. At 5 am. On the dot. Without fail. There is always one bird that starts to sing (if that's the right word) and then they all go nuts.
Until 5:30 and everything goes silent.
At 6 they take off - to look for food I guess.
This never changes - I['ve been paying attention since February.
I know LGF has readers/posters from around the world. If any of you can tell me how the birds where you live behave in the morning I'd love to know (I'm in Alexandia Virginia)

I did find a chicken in my garage once. A live chicken. A live (HUGE) chicken. Had several chickens wandering through the neighborhood (must've flown the coop). Called animal control.
There were two news vans in the neighborhood within an hour...was a pretty funny light story on the news that night.
Chickens in a gated community. Was pretty funny.
They wanted to interview me, but I've heard that the camera adds ten pounds. They had more than one camera.

Lucky you. I've got fucking coyotes in my front yard at about 6:30 most mornings. I can't even go get the newspapers without taking my gun. We have way too many deer and the state won't cull them - so now we have a coyote population explosion.

When my ex was a kid, her family used to raise chickens in the back yard. This was in the City of Chicago before it became a People's Socialist City-State, mind you...anyhow, she had a certain chicken which she was fond of.
One day she came home to dinner, which was chicken noodle soup. She asked her mother where her favorite chicken was, and her mother replied "She's in the soup." From that day forward, she HATED chicken and anything chicken-flavored.
Fast forward to 1989, where she visited our home in MIchigan, about four months after she kicked me out, trying to "save our marriage" (more like a scouting mission to determine my parents' assets, which her attorney went after). A couple of hours before she started an argument with my parents, which ultimately culminiated in my dad driving her sorry ass back to Chicago, we all had dinner. It was Rice-A-Roni and hot dogs, which she found delicious.
Oh, we forgot to tell her it was chicken-flavored....

Because my grandmother went and put flowers on the graves of relatives: parents, grandparents, aunts, and uncles, at several different cemeteries. But to my knowledge, none of them were ever in any branch of military service. I'm not sure why she did that.

Jerry West is the model for the NBA logo. 'Nuff said! I have a great Jerry West story. When I was about 9 or 10 years old, I was at a shopping mall in my hometown of Brockton, MA. There was a department store named Bradlees at one end of the mall. I told my mom I was going to look at the sporting goods and took off. When I got to the sporting goods area, Jerry West was sitting BY HIMSELF with a stack of photos (Regent Sports was the sponsor) and not a soul was around him. I recognized him immediately and was absolutely speechless! He signed a picture (which I still have more than 40 years later). I remember not having the courage to even speak! Can you imagine such a scene happening in this day and age? I remember it vividly.

No, I'm not aware of any such service. They were good people, I'm sure, and they served the local area by running stores and businesses, but no one served in the Armed Forces in any branch.
Right now I'm trying to see if I can find a news story from the 1950's when a relative was murdered. But I'm having no luck.

Agreed. I was just sharing something that confused me growing up.
Part of me thinks it would also be good to go to the families today who have lost loved ones in the forces and tell them how much it means to me that one of their own was willing to sacrifice his life so that I could stay free. To me, that would have more meaning than putting flowers on someone's grave. The flowers are good and deserving; please don't get me wrong. But I think the families that are left behind need to see that love and appreciation even more. They will be struggling this weekend, I would think.

Memorial Day, originally called Decoration Day, is a day of remembrance for those who have died in our nation's service. It is not important who was the very first, what is important is that Memorial Day was established. Memorial Day is not about division. Well, that's an old debate about all sports, isn't it? Every generation kids get bigger, stronger and faster; have coaching at earlier ages than ever before, etc. etc.
But I'm telling ya, if you could "adjust" for those differences, at least 2/3rds of the guys playing pro sports these days would be doing something else for a living!
speed has dramatically changed football in the last twenty tears or so....not downfield receivers but linebackers and especially defensive line...they can flat out motor nowdays...size of the offensive lines is another huge factor

I'm still trying to wrap my head around GOTC's silent departure and her rush to embrace of the cretins over at 2.0. She didn't offer even a single word of explanation or a goodbye, after four years of posting here and praying for our families and loved ones. I just can't seem to get past it, it's so grievous and hurtful.
There are plenty of Christian blogs out there, if she wanted to engage in more conservative conversation... why that place? Where so many of us are savaged and attacked on a daily basis by the participants?
A lot of us here trusted her, appreciated her example, and considered her to be a faithful friend. I wonder if she understands just how much she has hurt people with this? She is now embracing the people who call me a whore and worse, and I take that very personally.
It's going to take me a while to get over what she did... if I ever do.

On people leaving LGF, not going to anti LGF sites, but simply leaving.
This place use to be an incredible resource. The comments section was like a sweet pool of sanity in a dark dark world. I was offline for a few years and when I got back online here recently I discovered that the thousand comment threads here were 90% silliness.
Sillliness is fine, but when it is the dominant part of nearly every comment thread, it makes LGF little more than a quick meaningless chat at the water cooler.

everything, on any subject can be said in a couple hundred posts...after that debate adds to the volume, but it repeats itself over and over....plus there are far more posters than even just two years ago...personally I say what I want on a topic then sit back...I do not parrot others if I can help it...if someone already posts what my thoughts are I just leave it be....but with so many avid posters there will be that much more chaff...imo of course

I happen to think that humor and levity are extremely valuable things, in a world that is increasingly gone mad. When you add this humor and levity to intellegent discussion you have something that is far, far more than a "quick meaningless chat at the water cooler"... you have a refuge from the madness on the outside.
I prefer LGF just the way that it is, and I hope that it never changes.

I'm doing ok my friend. Just had a scare this past Monday when my mom's doc said she thought my mom had had a "very tiny stroke" - further investigation by a qualifed doctor proved that she had not (just took meds - a bunch of 'em - in the order prescribed by her "stroke" doctor) and they collectively made her very dizzy and lightheaded. But it was (and to a smaller degree everyday still is) SCARY for me and for mom for a while there.

The flight went well; and a few of you were kind enough to drop me an email telling me to be careful, with my bad heart I could easily get into trouble nearly 6000 feet above sea level. Thank you! And you bet no one is more worried about my health than ME. But if I didn't think I couldn't handle it, I wouldn't be here. (I also have supplimental oxygen perscribed by my doctor!)
I've really got to hand it to my friends out here - they've been supportive every step of the way, from offers to carry my O2 - not needed, the supplier delivered it to the hotel! - to an offer of a wheelchair and the unlimited services of someone to push me around. And all this for a guy who doesn't have any "pull" and can't donate a million dollars, but who just wants to come and help out and have fun with his friends. These people are the best!
Monday we'll put nine runners in the Bolder Boulder - nine people who have undergone a total of SIXTEEN heart operations! (and if you count me on the sidelines, add three more operations!) Because we want to prove that you can live a great life even if you were born with a bad heart.
So if you are in the race or are watching from the sidelines, give a shout to anyone wearing a broken heart T-shirt!

The problem is that people get nostalgic for an LGF that probably never existed. In the early days of the blogosphere it was all fresh new and exciting. LGF has changed but not that much. If anything it's become more focused on reality which is less sensationalistic and people who need the hysteria and conspiracy theories are going to be very bored here.
I think the fact checking has slipped a little among the lizards lately but it will come back.

The problem is that people get nostalgic for an LGF that probably never existed. In the early days of the blogosphere it was all fresh new and exciting. LGF has changed but not that much. If anything it's become more focused on reality which is less sensationalistic and people who need the hysteria and conspiracy theories are going to be very bored here.
I think the fact checking has slipped a little among the lizards lately but it will come back.
As some folks leave (either through being blocked or self-exile), and new people come on, the "personality" of the group as a whole changes.
People who left and and are now back, looking for the same "personality" of the place that existed when they left - are going to find it is different, different people, different viewpoints.
It's just how it is. Might be a good idea for people to just jump in and try to enjoy what actually IS than to long for what USED TO BE.

The Evangelical community in particular is heavily into marketing Christian products and earning profit. It's all part of the whole "prosperity gospel" that is preached and promoted by the Evangelical churches 24/7.
A lot of Christians feel the need to buy all kinds of cheap and expensive geegaws to display their faith to the world, for some odd reason, and the merchants who sell everything from pencils to bookmarkers to bracelets to plaques to paintings to books to jewelry are more than happy to exploit them. Slap the word "Jesus" or "God" on something, include a clever little poem or a fish, and Christians will buy it.
I think that Jesus had people like this in mind when he drove the money changers out of the temple.

Part of it is LGF is high profile now. Charles doesn't want to be associated with anything untoward, and we have to respect our host in that matter.

The Evangelical community in particular is heavily into marketing Christian products and earning profit. It's all part of the whole "prosperity gospel" that is preached and promoted by the Evangelical churches 24/7.
A lot of Christians feel the need to buy all kinds of cheap and expensive geegaws to display their faith to the world, for some odd reason, and the merchants who sell everything from pencils to bookmarkers to bracelets to plaques to paintings to books to jewelry are more than happy to exploit them. Slap the word "Jesus" or "God" on something, include a clever little poem or a fish, and Christians will buy it.
I think that Jesus had people like this in mind when he drove the money changers out of the temple.
You never saw such stuff when my grandparents went to church, that's for sure. It's really ridiculous and focuses on an external Christian look, rather than an internal motivation resulting in action.

I recall one in the Lakers' dark days, Nick Van Exel made a last-second 35-foot shot to beat the Celtics in the last game played in the old stadium, then was smothered by a laughing Vlade Divacs.
Also, I've heard comparisons of players like Kobe to Michael Jordan, in terms of how many of these game-winners they've made in their careers. OK, this list includes free-throws and stuff, but even so.

2) Otherwise - are there salaried "experts" in your field? What do they make? If what you have is an annual figure, divide it by 2080 (# work hours in a year for those who work a 40-hour/week workwee) to arrive at an hourly rate.
2) Are you going to charge by hours worked or by work produced?

Unless you're providing material goods (brochures, power points, etc) it's mostly billed hourly. Your time researching as well as actually sitting down and discussing whatever it is your consulting about. Now, as to the hourly rate, that depends on your
A)expertise
B)geography (you can charge more in say New York City than you could in North Platte Nebraska for instance
$25 an hour is a good base

3) I asked the prospect to shoot off 10 things he wants from me, whether technical/specific questions answers, conceptual discussions, email chains, documents, or if I'm on retainer and he can just call me for an hour a week. It might be some combination of all.

I don't know what you do or where you live, but there is salary information here, US Bureau of Labor Statistics. Hunt around, may be other good info. there too.
Whatever state you live in also will have a Dept of Labor or something similar, that should have state job and career and salary information.

Thanks RW! My current employer (well, the owner of the company) probably wouldn't mind, but recent company politics makes it a little sensitive subject for the time being. All in all, he would probably not mind assuming I didn't give away company assets or ideas or reduce my bandwidth for him. I'm pretty sure he'd trust me on that, and my prospective client would not respect me if I started feeding him obvious company documents or memos and charged him for providing them.
I'm in the residential audio/video/automation industry; we design build all electronic systems in luxury homes. The person who wants consulting has a company but wants to take it to the next level. They are in another country so not a direct competitor.
I'll get some more ideas and email you.

Thank you all so much. Your prayers and kind thoughts are like a big virtual hug. The whole thing is such an emotional train wreck. My son and his girlfriend arrived yesterday to spend the holiday weekend with us and we were all so happy to be together. Of course there's nothing that could be done, but I feel terrible that our first long visit with the girlfriend (who is a doll, by the way) is overshadowed by this loss. We are figuring out if we can make the trip for the funeral. And to top it all off, my youngest daughter's birthday is Wednesday, which will either be the day of or the day after the funeral. The whole thing is a very bizarre mix of sorrow and joy.
Anyway, thanks again for letting me unload on a bunch of strangers who are really very dear friends. You all mean so much to me.

BP, I've done all sorts of consulting and contracting. How to value your time? That's easy, just split the difference between what you're worth, and what you think you're worth!
Seriously, I could bloviate on this all day. Big name consultants get big bucks just for showing up, no-name consultants generally (but not always) have to actually work for the money.
And it depends so much on the specifics.
Contracting - is just doing at an hourly rate, what would otherwise be a salaried job. Then you just figure the dollars per hour the job goes for on salary, and charge that, or maybe 20% more to cover benefit and holidays not offered to the contractor, and there ya go.
OTOH, if you have the one and only secret that the business needs to make an extra billion dollars, then you charge them half a billion dollars for the consult.

My boss (owner) is a well known veteran and supporter of the industry in general. Me doing the same thing isn't necessarily a bad thing. Plus... I know how to do it better than him because I've spent so long in the trenches LOL.

Most Lizards know that I was laid off 5 years ago from a long lasting full time job as a programmer, and I have not been able to get a full time IT job since. I have had a number of short term contracting jobs, but I always run in to the same problem.
I get work down fast, under budget and before deadlines, and that doesn't bode well with the contracting firms. And yes, I'm talking about everything from 1 man contracting shops to major players in the Denver area.
I care too much about the work I do, and I can't milk my job.
Currently, I have one small project that I have been maintaining for Kaiser (through a contractor), which bring in a few grand a year. This works out because I am the only person on the project (except for the project leader) and the platform I am working in is not the contractors normal programming environment. So, I am king of the hill on this project, and they let me take the lead.
Personally, except for the Kaiser project, I have never seen or worked for a contacting firm that is anything but a money pit for their clients.

Sorry - real life intervened. I'd advise you to consider that consulting is just that; there are no benefits of any kind and the $25 an hour you get from your employer probably doesn't include the cost of health insurance, certainly vacation pay, paid sick days and etc.
When I was practising law, I did some real estate consulting (business-wise) and charged about $50 an hour more than my hourly rate at the law firm I was a partner in; and got - in writing - consent of my partners to go ahead and do the consulting work.

Wow! Learn something new everyday! I always thought the four major food groups were Caffeine, Nicotine, Alcohol and Rolaids.
Actually, they're: butter, sour cream, mayonnaise, and cheese.
Sadly, since the lactose intolerance set in, I'm extremely malnourished with only two food groups covered on a daily basis. I make up for the loss of nutrition with guacamole and tortilla chips, but I often feel weak.

Yeah me too. I'm on a contract right now, sitting next to and working with another guy from the same company. I generally shoot for 40 hours/week, he generally shoots for 50-plus, our group lead, who is an employee but by special arrangement is paid hourly instead of salary, generally shoots for 60 hours/week. So, who provides the most value? Well, let's say we've all found our own niches.

Well heck, that should be a bare minimum, all things considered, anything less would have to qualify as a hobby.
True. Since this is my first job, I'll take training wages. If I'm as effective as I think I can be (and this turns into more work), I can charge more.
Funny thing is, it is sort of a hobby. I participate in a private industry forum for my vocation/profession, and my opinionated and impassioned statements are what caused this person to pursue me to consult for them.
Seeing somebody else succeed would be awesome. Making a few bucks on top of that would be icing on the cake and enable other hobbies such as collecting and drinking old rotten grape juice and whacking little white balls into lakes and ocean inlets around my locale.

Great movie. A little syrupy for adults, maybe, but a great family flick. One of the very few movies I actually own.
And as long as we're talking about Julie Andrews, I will also heartily recommend The Sound of Music as a film that has absolutely everything a great film should: outstanding songs, a love triangle, teenage angst, another conflicted romance, engaging children - and Nazis.

I'm so glad that when I go to a Seahawks or Mariners game I-90 let's me out right there at the stadiums. I drove in SoCal for 14 years and the Seattle I-5, I-90 drivers are idjits compared to the pros on the freeways around LA and San Diego!

Mwahahaha! BTW, got another email from Lee Technologies about a job in Redmond. The problem is you have to be able to get to the site in 2 hours of being called in! Still haven't heard anything about the Quincy job, yet! The are the facilities management corp for Microsoft.

As a long time reader with 3 posts over the past 4 years, I must insist the Comnist Obama is plotting the ruin of the Amerikkkan banking system, and Islamic infiltrators are peeking over my hedge, so isn`t it time you put aside your petty differences with ugly baby animals and support them too?
