The only absolute truth can be purchased by the bottle. Of course, once you drain the bottle, truth becomes a little fuzzy and you may find that you have developed some serious doubts about gravity as the room begins to spin.

Um, cake as we think of it in America is seldom (or never) yeast-raised -- rather, it uses baking powder, or baking soda, or beaten egg whites to create the little air bubbles needed for a light, tender texture.
And when it comes to bread products, traditional biscuits as well as Irish soda bread are made without yeast -- as are pancakes, waffles, and muffins.
But you're right that yeast is essential for making alcohol!

As bad as it sounds, I find that the older they get, the more fun they are. Babies are cute and sweet and precious, but really not much fun... toddlers though are a blast! TRUTH: Living on the East Coast and coming to Colorado for a few days leaves your body wondering WTF time it is! I'm sleeping at strange times, and I haven't really been hungry yet. I'm just trying to stay on a "normal" eating schedule.
Yesterday I walked up to the Boulder Farmer's Market and bought some HUGE cherries! Delicious, too! Wound up walking around almost all day - just took everything slow and easy, pretty sure I walked 2 miles, at least. Knock on wood, I'm not having any problems adjusting the the altitude.
Saw several individuals selling left leaning publications ("Know the Troof!") but all in all people are friendly. Saw a guy balanced on a rocker board juggling knives, resisted the urge to call 1822. Somehow he did it and retained all his original body parts!
(call 1822? Yeah, call 911... TWICE!)

The Clinton's are the current Administration's enemy. They are angling their way back into the White House, and if an opportunity for undermining presents itself, they would love for that to happen in four years rather than eight. Hillary was brought on board under the old adage, "Keep your friends close, and your enemies closer."
There was apparently a quid pro quo concerning Bill, too. Bill has been yapping about ascending to a UN position since he left the White House - he really wants to become Secretary General, as unlikely as that is. Just last week, 0 announce that he was nominating Bill to the first step on this trail: UN ambassador.
To Haiti.

Identity Property of Addition,
Commutative Property of Multiplication,
Associative (Grouping) Property of Multiplication,
Identity Property of Multiplication,
Zero Property of Multiplication and

Hmmm. I would doubt that a fourth grader would have the abilities to understand and apply these concepts. They're abstract in themselves, and they apply to an abstract topic. It's not harmful to expose them to the terms, but I don't see any real education taking place here. It seems more like some "educator's" attempt to claim that they are teaching "advanced" mathematics.
The central tendency measures (mean, mode, average, etc.) aren't so bad; they are simple to compute, and can be applied to tangible problems, even if they're not fully understood until later.

His responses to the interviewer's questions are a huge, steaming pile of cluelessness. It is extremely disturbing reading his trivializations of people's suffering into a political equation that starts and ends with "Everyone's made bad decisions and mistakes until I came along," and then provides no actual answers.
Fortunately, the guy has no power to make law. The only hope to rein in spending and keep the government aimed in a generally sane direction is through Congress, particularly the Senate. That's where we ought to be focusing our efforts. There are enough Democrats and Republicans willing to commit to fiscal responsibility to build an effective coalition, if both sides are willing to put partisanship aside.

Actually, in the article linked about 0 is already blaming Bush for everything, as you predict. And he never quite gets around to saying that the projected deficits are unsustainable; he only acknowledges that we are now out of money.
And that's before anything as outrageously expensive as nationalized health care hits the menu.

Mr. Melvin is at the center of a dozen or so citizen snoops who have spent the past two years filling in the blanks on the map of one of the world's most secretive countries. Seeking clues in photos, news reports and eyewitness accounts, they affix labels to North Korean structures and landscapes captured by Google Earth, an online service that stitches satellite pictures into a virtual globe. The result is an annotated North Korea of rocket-launch sites, prison camps and elite palaces on white-sand beaches.

Math is good. You can't ever have too much math, in my opinion. I took a minor in it along with my bachelor's degree, and although I rarely make use of anything more advanced than algebra, the exposure to more advanced mathematics definitely makes you think about things in a different way.
My approach to my own kid's math homework, and all their other topics, is to make them explain it to me, while providing barely enough help to get them over the rough spots. They do better when they come to understand it on their own, rather than being spoon-fed the answers. It's helpful, too, to keep them focused on what the problem they're trying to solve actually, is, and whether their answers make sense in terms of that. If their answer winds up stating that a chicken weighs more than two elephants, I would guess that there is something wrong somewhere.
The "something wrong," though, can often be the math teacher. Your son's in a private school, so this is probably not so much an issue, but in the public schools there is no requirement at all that teachers in charge of a mathematics class have any background in mathematics, and they are sometimes incapable of solving the problems they assign to their students; instead, they compare students answers to the answers provided in the course curriculum materials, without any understanding.
But I'm working myself into a rant if I keep going down that road, so I'll stop now.

With the dollar slipping, the Chinese and other foreign capital sources have no reason to buy US Treasuries, as they lose wealth relative to their own currency when the dollar slips.
So... we will have to offer a very high interest rate to make it worth their while to hold or even buy more treasuries.
Therefore, we will have a very high interest and inflation rate in the foreseeable future.
This will also serve to drain capital from the stock market, as you will be able to get a very high return for less risk in fixed income.

Would Obama have it any other way? He's not going to take responsibility for his own bloated $3.4 trillion (and that's probably a conservative estimate).
Democrats refused to budget on entitlement reform of Medicare, Medicaid and Social Security, and the situation is getting worse by the day. That's on them.
The trillions spent without the money to back it up - deficit spending is out of control, and higher taxes is going to actually widen the gap because it will suck money out of the economy, rather than encourage spending.
Meanwhile, we keep seeing that government programs to help homeowners has fallen flat. Hope for Homeowners got one person out of the entire nation to adjust their mortgage. Other state and local programs are failures as well. The credit is out there - but people with bad credit shouldn't be getting mortgages, and that's just the hard economics. Congress wants to change all that - and the result is the "affordable housing" programs, which are anything but affordable - as witnessed by the trillions lost in real estate when the bubble burst and not the trillions more being spent to prop up that sector.

Maybe this, in addition to her penchant for telling outrageous lies, will push the voters to boot her butt.
I doubt it, although I would welcome her departure. However, I would strongly oppose any sort of bailout for states, especially California.
California had a huge economic boom thanks to the software and hardware growth over the last 30 years in Silicon Valley and across the rest of the state. They splurged in their new-found wealth by enacting a huge raft of entitlement programs and pie-in-the-sky regulations, from free college tuition to regulations on weeding your garden. Now that economic hard times have hit, none of these programs can be paid for. Schwarzenegger went to the state legislature and asked them for cuts in non-essential programs; the legislature flat-out refused to cut even a dime from the budget. Then he went to the voters, noting that if no one was willing to cut spending, it would be necessary to raise taxes to keep paying for all this fluff. Voters, themselves strapped by a flood of dismal economic circumstances, flatly rejected this request. So now it falls to Schwarzenegger to make cuts where he can, with the limited powers available to him as Governor. Mostly, this only enables him to close selected facilities, like prisons, state police posts and firefighting facilities.
Under these circumstances, a bailout would be unthinkable. Don't even try to come after my tax money while you're still spending state funds on a huge pile of bullshit that you can easily and reasonably do without.

Some good news mixed in with a lot of "maybe's":
Goods Orders, Home Sales Probably Rose: U.S. Economy Preview
May 24 (Bloomberg) -- Orders for durable goods and home sales probably rose in April as the worst U.S. recession in at least half a century started to loosen its grip, economists said before reports this week.Bookings for goods meant to last several years increased 0.4 percent, the second gain in three months, according to the median forecast in a Bloomberg News survey ahead of a Commerce Department report May 28. Combined sales of new and existing homes likely advanced to a 5.02 million annual rate from a 4.93 million pace in March, other figures may show.
Stabilization in housing and manufacturing, the two areas suffering the biggest contractions, will help ease the economic slump. Still, gains will be difficult to sustain in coming months as banks remain hesitant to lend and unemployment climbs, underscoring projections from Federal Reserve officials and private economists that a recovery will be subdued.
“Evidence that the 16-month recession is coming to an end continues to build,” said David Resler, chief economist at Nomura Securities International Inc. in New York. “Home sales and building activity seem to be stabilizing and manufacturing surveys point to smaller production cuts and smaller job losses.”

Amen to that. I remember during the late 70s/early 80s recession when interest rates skyrocketed (different reasons, but similar results); it was possible to purchase 20-year CDs that bore double-digit interest rates. If I had had any dough at the time, I would have sunk it all into those instruments; they beat any historical stock market return, and they were as near to totally safe as it is possible to be. I'm preparing for their return, although these days most CDs are callable, which takes some of the shine off of them under such circumstances.

Looks like it's dependent on the flag material:
Title 4, Chapter 1, Section 6 of the flag code states the time and occasions for flying the flag.
a. It is the universal custom to display the flag only from sunrise to sunset on buildings and on stationary flagstaffs in the open. However, when a patriotic effect is desired, the flag may be displayed twenty-four hours a day if properly illuminated during the hours of darkness.
c. The flag should not be displayed on days when the weather is inclement, except when an all-weather flag is displayed.

The situation in CA is obscene because it's the result of decades of unsustainable government growth and spending. The politicians don't want to cut projects and programs because it would look bad, since they can't take the pork home to their constituents. Never mind that their constituents are getting fleeced at every turn by governments with their hands deep in their pockets.
Unfunded mandates fall on governments at all levels, and they must stop - if a program exists - the government that demands them must pay for them. If they don't the program can't go forward. That should be the law of the land for all levels of government.
It shouldn't fall on localities to fund programs that were imposed from the top without care for who pays for it (but then again, that's often the point - the feds want to show that they're doing something, but leave it to the localities to impose it).

It's gonna' choke me! When does the water-boarding begin?" After a few minutes of bickering about this, we reach the usual compromise of not buttoning the top button. Some days I could just scream.

Hi Hoops - yes and frankly I've heard TAPS played too often over too many of my friends and relatives to be able to listen to it again.
In fact, I've left directions in my will (I'll have to be buried in a military cemetery cause there isn't enough money to do otherwise) that Taps not be played and something else (which I'll reveal tomorrow) played - on a boom-box if necessary - in lieu thereof. Don't know if that will be allowed, but I'm gonna try.

Did you know there are only 24 notes to taps? only 24.. The most powerful 24 notes I've ever heard
And one of the hardest to play on a trumpet (no valves, all open notes so it's all done by lip muscle tightening). I played it once for a VFW funeral when I was a kid and it was freezing cold. I completely missed the highest note and it sounded like a bleat. It sounded horrible. I felt SO bad. The VFW guys didn't care (there were only about 10 people there) and told me it was okay, but I was shaken, thinking of the significance of the event. I never did it again.

About the flag. A nephew of mine currently serving his 21st year in the military has a tattoo of the flag that is so cool. On his upper arm there is what appears to be a a wound where some kind of animal has torn three open wounds open and the skin is peeled back. Beneath the open tears you can see Old Glory. Now thats cool.

BB does not have variable neck measurements for boys but, they do have broadcloth. The neck size is not too small--I can insert half of my hand into it once I get it buttoned. If he had to spend more than two hours a week in Oxford-cloth shirts, I'd buy shirts made of smoother material but, bitching is just his way of asserting power.

re: #344 buzzsawmonkey
I know Land's End makes them in a number of places, including Honduras. I think Brooks has fallen to having stuff made in Malaysia. Most of what we get here is made elsewhere.
Nonetheless, Brooks maintains better quality control than Land's End does. Also, Land's End has gone to the abomination of "no-iron cotton." I understand its appeal for people who are not willing to blow the money on having a laundry do one's shirts--but neither "no-iron cotton", which is, of course, treated, or cotton-poly blends (ugh) will ever be as comfortable as a properly-fitted all-cotton shirt.
There are some things you just can't cut corners on.
I'll buy no-iron shirts for me but, not for The Kid. I hate ironing but, I can suck it up for him.

If you've gotten him Brooks oxfords, then they're probably pretty smooth and supple; the Brooks product is on an entirely different order of quality than the Land's End.
You might want to check the Sierra Trading Post website; they do all sorts of closeouots at drastically reduced rates, and are good about taking returns if something doesn't suit.

You are right, in those days, the labels were sewn all the way around and I had to carefully pull the stitches out so I didn't harm the garment. Sometimes those stitches were tiny.

re: #361 buzzsawmonkey
If you compare labels today to labels on shirts from a few years ago, he's probably right. Labels used to be made of a rayon which got softer with each washing, and were sewn down all the way around; they now are sewn only on the top in many cases, so can tickle and scratch, and are made of a polyester which does not soften.
I often remove labels for this reason.
And I've never liked jeans, even when fashion dictated that I wear them; khaki chinos for mine. They give you room to move around in.
I take ALL labels out of my clothes (and wash the items) before I ever wear them. You are right about labels - some manufactureres are now beginning to print the label on the inside, and that is so much better.
As for jeans - THANK GOODNESS for lycra = I do not buy jeans (or, actually, shirts or khakis or anything else) unless it has lycra in it.

Were you aware as Mr. Spencer said this morning on that Fox interview, that perhaps 6% of the US jail population may be getting proselytized by moslem imams, and are reading islamic texts in US jail libraries that urge jihad?
This related to the four US citizens radicalized in US jail to commit jihad against their own US citizens and apprehended last week.

re: #368 buzzsawmonkey
He can and should. Being able to wear decent clothing like you own it, and it doesn't own you, is a skill acquired by practice, and a very necessary one. It is not merely the wearing of garments that makes you look good, it is how you wear them.
As I said, that was one of the great benefits of having worn a school uniform for a while when I was a kid; I learned to wear a jacket and tie as natural clothing, not as some sort of straitjacket to be unwillingly buckled into. It makes a big difference being able to move in a suit as though you are not conscious that you are in it--in situations where you need to be "dressed," it gives you as much authority as the suit itself. In situations such as job interviews or public presentations, which can be stressful at the best of times, not having to fight your clothes puts you in a much better position.
He's fine once he gets dressed. (Oh, heck, he's more than fine. He looks like a million dollars.) It's just the power struggle while getting him dressed that grates.

Bibi's no paper tiger and he has no intention of rolling over and being obedient to the Obama administration. He's reasonable, but it's clear that he sees that unbalanced Israeli concessions have always been the centerpiece of the "peace plans" and he will simply have no more of it; it's time for the other side to concede a bit.

Nobody's perfect, but the Israelis chose the guy they needed at the time. I would think in Israel certain issues are less subject to "nuance" than here in the states.
Nobody's perfect? Clinton gets the axe from the Republican party for doing the exact some thing Bibi did, i.e. making nicey with Arafat and reaching out to him during the Wye Accord agreements. Bibi also withdrew from the territories and Hebron in the late 90s, not a popular decision. If we criticize Clinton for the way he handled the Middle East, Bibi at the time was certainly no better.
Bibi also, like Clinton, was involved in a number of personal scandals during his last tenure as PM.
I'm very slow to criticize American and Israeli policy in the matter especially when the larger chunk of the burden of peace belongs to the Arabs who consistently fight against it.

Even if it's legal (and I'm not so sure it is) for any university anywhere in this country to deny a student members of a political party the right to gather and meet at the University, then I think ALL federal funding (and frankly State funding) should be pulled from that university for denying some students the right to form a Democratic Club as constituting a denial of Freedom of Speech.

Umm.... no. She didn't. Why would you continue to perpetrate a mistruth? The facts are easy to find. Here:
"Dean of Harvard Law School
Lawrence Summers appointed Kagan the first female dean of Harvard Law School in 2003.[4] She succeeded Robert C. Clark who had served as dean for over a decade. The focus of her tenure has been improving student satisfaction. Efforts include constructing new facilities and reforming the first year curriculum, as well as aesthetic changes and creature comforts, such as free morning coffee. She has been credited for employing a consensus-building leadership style which surmounted the school's previous ideological discord.
She also inherited a $400 million capital campaign, "Setting the Standard," in 2003. It ended in 2008 with a record breaking $476 million raised, 19% more than the original goal.[5] Kagan is also credited with overcoming ideological disputes among the Law School faculty that had hindered new faculty appointments. She has made a number of prominent new hires, increasing the size of the faculty considerably.[citation needed]
Her name was briefly mooted to replace Summers as president of Harvard.[4] During her deanship, Kagan supported a long-standing policy barring military recruiters from campus."
Recruiters, not ROTC. ROTC has *always* been an undergraduate program. I know because that's how I went to college before flying in the Air Force.

Liberty isn't just a two bit school. My campus isn't that far away from it- its possibly one of the most outwardly 'conservative christian' schools in the country. Their science faculty espouses creationism, IIRC, and I happen to know that they outright deny evolution. Their pre-med program isn't very successful. They consider themself part of the 'christian ivy league'.
Incidently, Harvard was not receiving federal funding while they prohibited recruiters from campus, although the law campus is receiving it now that they are allowing recruitment again. I don't know about columbia, but its important to get one's facts straight before lambasting a college for taking money while refusing recruitment.

re: #479 austin_blue
Umm.... no.
Her name was briefly mooted to replace Summers as president of Harvard.[4] During her deanship, Kagan supported a long-standing policy barring military recruiters from campus."Recruiters, not ROTC. ROTC has *always* been an undergraduate program. I know because that's how I went to college before flying in the Air Force.
* * * *
Thank you for your service. Off the top of my head I said Kagan was Dean of one OR the other at Harvard U.
Banning US military recruiters from Harvard or other "elite" US universities is offensive ON ITS FACE.
Your opinion of leftist management and CONTROL may differ.

I wish the stimulus package could have been packaged differently. The idea was basically sound, a continuation of the Bush policies, but it smells bad. I have read as much as I can about the various bailouts, and as a layman, I am still somewhat confused. It appears that the problem is not the mortgages and commercial loans (which was the problem in the '86 crash which resulted in the S&L bailouts), but the various derivatives that were floated that were *based* upon the original loans. It was layer upon layer of risk that was piled on the banking system, and then insured by groups like AIG. So when the party ended, pretty much everybody was left holding various pieces of paper that were impossible to value. Hence the gridlock in loans. The sad thing, to me, was that the people who originally sold the suspect paper had already made their profits and were off stage, grinning.
I suppose we could have let everyone go bankrupt because the basis of "wealth" was fictional, but then where would we be? Could we really afford another shutdown of the world economy? I just don't know....

The stampede caused a fence to give way, killing five women, two teenagers and four men. Forty people were injured, eight of them seriously.
The victims were among 70,000 spectators at a concert by Moroccan pop star Abdelaziz Stati at the Hay Nahda soccer stadium in Rabat.
"An investigation is under way to establish the exact causes and circumstances of the incident," the Interior Ministry said in a statement.
The concert was part of a week-long annual Mawazine music festival in Rabat which ended in the early hours of Sunday.
Mawazine is one of a growing number of well-funded music festivals aimed at promoting an image of tolerance and modernity in the Muslim north African kingdom.

"...but its important to get one's facts straight before lambasting a college for taking money while refusing recruitment." NO it isn't. As a general proposition, any college or University which receives Federal Funding and they refuses to allow the Armed Forces to recruit on campus, the same way they allow other businesses to recruit on campus, then my opinion is that that college or university should NOT receive Federal Funding. And Liberty U. isn't worth wasting my time over researching the issue.
Moreover, I find it hard to believe that Harvard wasn't receiving any government funding in say it's science department, doing research for, among others, the DoD. You have a link to that statement of fact that they weren't receiving Federal Funds of any type?
And finally remember the whole reason why I find it so abhorrent for a public school to teach ID/YEC in it's science department is because it is FUNDED by taxpayer dollars.

Hi realwest. I am aware that Memorial Day is for fallen soldiers as opposed to Veteran's Day but I feel it necessary to mention the active ones because there is such a strong antagonism against our troops. I also don't know a ton of lizards except the ones I have interacted with. I will not remove Iron Fist because he has been my one of my LGF mentors and a soldier in the war against liberals and socialism. For me Memorial Day symbolizes my thoughts towards ALL of our troops, living, dead and retired. This is what it has meant for my family. However my posts, are about men who served who are dead.Just because one passes away at home after duty does not mean that his passing was not a long term effect of his duty.

I understand your qualms. Hopefully, what we will see happen is a recovery in various bank and auto stocks, now owned by the government, which can be sold at a profit to lay off the government spending that saved those companies in the first place. That is my understanding of the plan. I hope that is correct. The government shouldn't be in the business of micromanaging private firms. Rather, it should set up enough regulatory rules that prevents companies from selling unregulated financial instruments that got us into this cock-up in the first place.

let me explain "shovel ready projects." State and local governments have been using the same union based contractors and/or favored contractors for years. The money filtering down to these projects do not create NEW jobs. At least not any new jobs that help the average American. The same contractors get the money, they pay the same engineers and designers that they have had on employ forever, and that's what takes up most of the money. This doesn't open up any high level jobs to anyone.
And who gets the money at the bottom. The same Illegal workers who have been doing this work for years.
This money won't help NEW contractors and NEW engineers and NEW designers and NEW support personal.
It's a good old boy network, and Obama just opened the financial floodgates to feed them.
How does this stimulus create NEW jobs? It doesn't.

re: #543 Afrocity
"Just because one passes away at home after duty does not mean that his passing was not a long term effect of his duty." Very true indeed. One former LGFer, USMC 1968 passed away late last year from prostate cancer and there is a growing body of evidence that those of us who served in Vietnam contracted various cancers from exposure to Dioxin (the active ingredient in the defoliant Agent Orange - or Purple Haze - depending on the coloring the pilots used to enable them to see where the Dioxin was landing) and other factors.
But if a veteran has passed away, for causes completely beyond his/her service in the military, I have absolutely no quarrel at all in including them on Memorial Day.
And, of course, everyone is entitled to interpret Memorial Day and to honor those whom one chooses, but as the sole remaining survivor of my own little "band of brothers" and having lost family near and dear to my heart in war, I prefer to think of Memorial Day as day to honor all those who made the "ultimate sacrifice" for our Nation.

Well
The government shouldn't be in the business of micromanaging private firms. Rather, it should set up enough regulatory rules that prevents companies from selling unregulated financial instruments that got us into this cock-up in the first place.
we could start by either eliminating or severely limiting the Community Reinvestment Act (first signed into law by Jimmy Carter, then "revitalized" by amendment signed by Bill Clinton). The CRA LITERALLY created the "Sub Prime Mortgage" which has broken so many people, mostly those it was intended to help in the first place and gave the financial markets another "toy" to play with.

And that's what I said, in a more verbose way than you did, but, it comes down to the same thing. He's moved the target, and yes, maybe he is "saving" some jobs, but it the same "old boy" club that we have seen benefit from government handouts for ever.
And this money also filters through state employees hands, and they get a cut of the pie, managing the programs at the state level.
The bulk of this money will not create new jobs, it will simply maintain the honey pot for those beholden to the government.

You may find it hard to believe, but they weren't. Harvard WAS NOT receiving federal funding. When they first banned recruiters, as part of their statement they acknowledged that they would no longer be accepting federal money. Harvard has a massive endowment, and they claimed that they would be relying on that.
