Memorial Day 2009

US News • Views: 2,110

On May 25th this year we honor the men and women of the US military who have died serving our country. As we fire up the barbecues and crack open our assorted beverages today, don’t forget to spend a few moments contemplating their sacrifices and giving thanks for these heroes and champions of freedom.

The National Memorial Day Parade in Washington DC is scheduled to begin tomorrow at 2 pm Eastern.

Isn't tomorrow technically Memorial Day?

My neighbor survived the Bataan Death March and was one of the Great Escape survivors. I think of him often.

That's kind of freaky. So, if you ever knew you were dying, you could pre-load LGF for a many days/years out as you wanted to, and the system (as long as the server and storage space was active) would go on with out you. That's so cool. No not you dying, but...

Gates of Vienna has a post up about this year's CounterJihad Summit which took place in secret last week. No big names were mentioned, mostly small time anonymous bloggers. They concluded the report with this dire prediction/wish.....

....all across Europe the right-wing “xenophobic” parties are rising in the polls and gaining seats in local and national elections. Next month’s European parliamentary election will likely result in the entry of Sverigedemokraterna and Libertas into the EP, as well as more seats for Vlaams Belang, the PVV, Dansk Volkeparti, and other nationalist parties.

Some analysts make the mistake of relying on linear extrapolation to predict the future, but historical processes do not follow linear patterns. Affairs tend to proceed smoothly enough for a time, but all the while tension, resentment, and rage are building. Then comes a relatively small event — Gavrilo Princip pulling the trigger, for example — and the world is irrevocably changed.

We’re heading into one of those discontinuities right now, and sooner than most people think.

I've never had a family member in the US military (flat feet, too young for the draft, etc.), but I do have a grandfather who served the German Army in WWII. Got busted for desertion and escaped prison over the Alps to become a POW for the Allies. I've never met him, but I want to (he ruined my grandmother's family with a nasty divorce, so there's been a moratorium on ever trying to speak positively about him pretty much).

I know some servicemen right now, and you can bet I'll pay my respects tomorrow.

Disgusting. So now they're holding their little hate group meetings in secret so they can't be exposed ahead of time. What do they have to hide? (Never mind -- I already know the answer.)

Meanwhile, at the "Infidel Bloggers Alliance" website today, there's a post advocating "culturism" -- the new label they're trying to give white nationalism to make it more acceptable, so that groups like the BNP and Vlaams Belang can gain power more quickly.

I have a number of dear relatives who are no longer with us, who happened to be veterans, but they luckily survived combat and passed away peacefully years later. So Veteran's Day has more personal resonance for me than this one.

Except for the point that they COULD have died in combat, and that many of their comrades did die helping to save their lives. And our lives.

So in memory of those who did not survive to help Granddad remember his war stories, may you rest in peace and may we continue to keep the United Kingdom, United States, Israel, and other free nations places you can be proud of.

90 MacDuff  Sun, May 24, 2009 11:29:09am

As we honor our nations fallen, let us also honor the nation for which they fell, for the two are inseparable.

We are a warrior nation of sorts, but our warriors are, and always have been defenders, not conquerors. We have defended our own nation, as well as peoples in foreign lands who could not defend themselves. The warriors we honor have paid the ultimate price to make the world a better place and their sacrifice has not been in vain.

This is what separates us from previous great civilizations and that difference is the one that defines us.

Imagine the history of the past 100 years without the United States. That history would have been far more brutal but for the sacrifices that this country has made in the blood of its warriors and the treasure of its generous people. The world today would be a far darker but not for our existence and intervention.

In the history of mankind, what other nation has so selflessly contributed to the safety, security and overall betterment of mankind and literally asked for nothing in return but its own safety and security? We have taken the great philosophies of past great civilizations and, in many ways perfected them, at least to the extent than man can perfect anything. While our history is not without its sinister periods, slavery in particular, we have confronted those evils and changed them. We have made mistakes, admitted them, and looked ahead to a brighter future rather than wallowing in the past.

So, as we remember those who have given their all for this bold idea that we call “the United States of America”, let us renew and recommit ourselves to that idea. We are now living in perilous times, fractured in many ways and for many reasons. There are those who find that apologies are in order and placation of the enemies of all we hold dear is the easiest road to peace and prosperity, for our nation and the world. I reject that notion.

The road to peace and prosperity has never been, and never will be, short and easy; neither for us or the world. It is only with perseverance, faith in our abilities as Americans and unswerving belief in America’s singular uniqueness in the whole of man’s history that this journey can be completed and we must lead, not follow.

Those who we honor on this Memorial Day gave us the map; all we need do is follow it.

But on this weekend I must remember his service in Vietnam, for pulling two guys out of a helicopter crash.

I know, our EMS guys do the same thing, but (1) I appreciate their service too and (2) they don't have to fly away from friends and family to a warzone to go do it.

126 JHW  Sun, May 24, 2009 11:40:29am

I've recently been checking out family history (thanks ancestry dot com) and today it's appropriate for me to remember those, many of them, who have not been remembered for decades .
Mom's great-Grandad 93rd New York Infantry, 1861-5, his brother 96th New York Infantry, 1861-5. Mom's brother, 7th Infantry Division,US Army, Korea, 1950, very severely wounded at the Chosin reservoir (they were there with the USMC), still living.

Dad, 8th Air Force, B-17 crewman, 1942-5. Long deceased. His Grandad,G.O.W., very interesting, 10th Michigan Cavalry, 1863-5, ran away from home age 16 "to go squirrel hunting", and a pregnant girl was involved who gave birth to Grandma in 1863. He came back from the war and the couple adopted a very young orphaned girl of an Army comrade. Lived in Stanton, Michigan, and much of the town moved here to Washington as loggers along with a Stanton lumber-baron.I have a photo showing him in 1890 driving a bull-team in the woods. Any Michigan lizards know anything about this (Stanton MI story)?

His brother H.C.W, "C", 1st Michigan Cavalry, Custer's Michigan Brigade, captured at Gettysburg, died 26 July, 1864 Andersonville, Georgia.
His young wife's (G.O.W's) brother, W.H.H, "C",4th Michigan Infantry, killed at Fredericksburg, VA, Dec. 1862. Another of great-grandma's brother, "G",17th Michigan Infantry,1862-5. Great-Granpa's grandad J.W, War of 1812. His dad, C.W., Connecticut Dragoons, Revolution. The Revolution rolls are on-line but very difficult to search.

My 1st cousin, 8th Inf, 4th Inf. Div, Utah Beach, WW2. Married a French woman he met at a D-Day reunion. He's gone, she survives him. Another cousin, 1st Cavalry Div., WW2, Philippine Islands, still living.

Lastly my dear brother, gone but not forgotten, 4th Battalion, 47th Infantry Regt., 9th Infantry Division, 1968-9, Vietnam. Badly wounded 1969.

I guess it's an all-Army family, Dad's WW2 service in 8th AF, USAAF was still a part of Army then.

I didn't serve (too late for Vietnam), but ancestors include:

1 Two veterans of the Continental Army (Chester County, Pennsylvania Battalion raised by Colonel Anthony Wayne);

2. One veteran of the War of 1812 (raised regiment of volunteers at Dillsburg, Pennsylvania, and marched to the relief of Washington, only to be diverted to Fort McHenry, Baltimore Harbor);

3. Four great great uncles killed in action at Gettysburg, Pennsylvania, July 2, 1863 (Pennsylvania volunteer militia)(surviving fifth brother was my great, great-grandfather, too young to enlist, but lied about his age to become a drummer boy, recovered by his mother in time to prevent his service);

4. one cousin in German Army in WWI, recipient of four Iron Crosses, First Class, promoted to Major, later killed by the Nazis ("Canada? Why should I come to Canada? Hitler respects military courage.");

5. Father in Royal Canadian Army Medical Corps, WWII: At age 23, replacement medical officer for North Nova Scotia Highlander Regiment (predecessor killed in action);

6. Uncle, First Lieutenant, U.S. Army in troop transport during Korean War: column shelled by Red Chinese artillery, his truck and several others destroyed in the action.

7. Cousin (Female), U.S. Army, just returned from third tour in Iraq Theater.

To all you lizards who are veterans, or have friends or family who have served or sacrificed, my hat is off, and I salute!

re: #63 Killgore Trout

Some analysts make the mistake of relying on linear extrapolation to predict the future, but historical processes do not follow linear patterns. Affairs tend to proceed smoothly enough for a time, but all the while tension, resentment, and rage are building. Then comes a relatively small event — Gavrilo Princip pulling the trigger, for example — and the world is irrevocably changed.

The dream of anarchists everywhere, to make "the" difference. (Change!)

But historically, is this accurate? I think not. The Ottoman Empire was fat and torpid, and fell. The Austro-Hungarian Empire had been tottering for centuries, and fell. The British Empire that won, lasted a few more decades then dismantled itself anyway.

Lesson? Well, perhaps Firesign said it best:

"If you push something hard enough, it will fall over." Teslacle's Deviant to Fudd's Law: "It goes in, it must come out."

Yes and I checked out Andersonville on line (looking for a grave marker), the NPS has an excellent site. Apparently a lot of the deaths were from dysentery, including Great-Granpa's brother. Almost unavoidable given the extreme crowding and lack of sanitation. At any rate I mention this, because great-Grandpa was held up as an example to us kids growing up, very dignified old gent . He was killed in a traffic accident in 1932, our local paper had a black-bordered obit on the front page. He was extolled as a man who fought racism and hatred and religious intolerance all his life. He had no patience for those that hated because of religion or race "the black man was the Union soldier's best friend".The Confederate soldiers "were honorable opponents, our countrymen", even though his brother had died in a Confederate prison, he held no animus against them. I sure wish I'd have met him, he sounded like a giant to me.

Apparently it took place in Copenhagen on May 16th -- the link to the IFPS shows that Spencer was in Copenhagen on the 12th. I'm very curious to know if he was at the meeting, because this seems like a very curious coincidence if he wasn't. And if so, why are they hiding it?

Marines are a branch of the Navy? Or the other way around?

*Runs for cover*

I found the difference between sailors and Marines early in my Navy carrier when I was in the Gator Navy on a amphibious assault ship. During the Cuban missile crisis the Marines on board were excited about the mission, we were concerned. These are the guys that would run toward opening LCM ramp door that could have machine gun fire bouncing off it and they could not wait to go.
When President Kennedy got on the radio and told us is it was over, the sailors were happy, the Marines were disappointed.

Teach college, you wouldn't believe how unprepared incoming freshman are these days, no knowledge of the basic outline of US History nor Western Civilization. Instead they get World Civ. which is essentially a disjointed hash teaching basically nothing (teaching 3000 years of Western History is tough enough but now they try and jam 4000 years of Chinese and Indian history into a couple of weeks with a dash of Pre-Columbian and African history, it just doesn't work), and lots of "technology" driven drivel (In the 50's, 60's, and 70's the worst teachers relied on films, in the 80's it was video, now it is the Internet, same crap wrapped in a new package.) And does anyone know how to read a map? The lack of geographic knowledge is scary. I won't even go off on the lack of basic economic literacy, math literacy, nor scientific literacy.

188 capitalist piglet  Sun, May 24, 2009 12:00:46pm

Today I'm remembering my father, a Navy corpsman attached to the Fourth Marine Division on Iwo Jima, and his stretcher partner who was KIA by an explosion as the two were out doing collections. I'm also remembering my dad's cousin (and best friend) with the Fifth Marine Division, who was KIA near Hill 362A/Nishi Ridge on Iwo. He was trying to help someone else to (relative) safety, when he was cut down by machine gun fire. My brother was named after him.

To all who have sacrificed and all who have served: We owe you so much. Thank you, and may God bless you.

17 days? there's a story there, somewhere....... %-)

As a matter of fact, there is.
I went to Great Lakes NTC in Illinois to start Boot Camp. I went in as a Nuke candidate, and on Friday the 13th of October, 1978, after our initial medicals, they pulled all the Nukes for a secondary exam by a Navy Ophthalmologist. It was there I found I had keratoconus. They sent me to a civvie for a second opinion, which he concurred, and so I was unable to continue.
17 days in. 17 when I went in, and 17 when I got out. But I was at least willing to sign away my life and Constitutional rights away for six years, and I'm glad for that.

George Custer's cavalry skirmish at the end of the battle of Gettysburg earned him a brevet promotion to General. Very few people know that Robert E. Lee ordered Jeb Stewart's cavalry to attack the Union line on Cemetery Ridge from the rear at the same time Pickett was hitting the line from the front. A simultaneous attack might have broken the line, changing the course of the war.

Custer's cavalry intercepted Stewart, and drove him off in sharp fight. Custer and his men literally saved the Union line, and saved the day for the Union.

This is not stopping or slowing down, but because of the exposure that they have received from bloggers like Charles, I suspect that they many of them have made a unified decision to keep a lot of their machinations out of the public eye.

These people are just gearing up, and they are going to try to make it harder to out their bigoted and nationalistic activities.

Despite my disagreement & dissatisfaction with Colin Powell, I don't forget he said this:

[F]ar from being the Great Satan, I would say that we are the Great Protector. We have sent men and women from the armed forces of the United States to other parts of the world throughout the past century to put down oppression. We defeated Fascism. We defeated Communism. We saved Europe in World War I and World War II. We were willing to do it, glad to do it. We went to Korea. We went to Vietnam. All in the interest of preserving the rights of people.

And when all those conflicts were over, what did we do? Did we stay and conquer? Did we say, "Okay, we defeated Germany. Now Germany belongs to us? We defeated Japan, so Japan belongs to us"? No. What did we do? We built them up. We gave them democratic systems which they have embraced totally to their soul. And did we ask for any land? No, the only land we ever asked for was enough land to bury our dead. And that is the kind of nation we are.

The video was uploaded to youtube by another SD activist/politician.
My guess is that the counterjihad summit has been folded in to the "free press society" meeting. They're trying to hide it in hopes of putting the controversy behind them.

That person has an account of the brave anti-jihadists' field trip to the dreaded Malmo -- where they observed Muslims doing ... well, nothing out of the ordinary. They went there during the day instead of at night, when "violent mobs roam the streets."

Of course, they didn't actually see any violent mobs or much of anything else, except people going about their business.

It's a plot! Sharia! Jihad! We're all doomed unless we do something right now! ! !

I could write a book about why I missed that. My ship made it, but my LCM, Bowhook, Coxswain me did not. Our boat had been loaned to another ship for a few days, and she was called back to help locate the Thresher sub sinking. We were dropped off on Viegas Island to await the return of our ship weeks later. We lived on the Mike boat, ate with the Marines, road the native horses, quite a adventure.

Partied on Viegas a few times myself after a sweep exercise of two. Fond memories.

We ran out of food during the blockade so the ops commander used us for mail service - 4 sweepers - 1 every day would depart for San Juan - overnite in SJ (no shore leave), pick up the mail - resupply and return - drop off the mail - one day on station and repeat - the good news was I was in charge of picking up the mail and honed the fine art of my detail getting a quickie en route and back to the ship with no one the wiser.

We were stunned when the Thresher went down.

Me and my family were at the Buenos Aires zoo. I was maybe 5 or 6 years old. We were looking at the cage of some monkey specie when a bomb exploded in the middle of the round-about in our direct line of sight. Nothing really happened except a lady fell unconscious.
That very Montoneros terror was one of the main reasons why my family left Argentina.
Since then I feel no sympathy at all for any terrorist organization. To put it mildly.

Interesting to hear you say that, because I've been watching the World History teachers all year, wondering how the hell they're doing it. I walk into the teacher's lounge and say "How's the Age of Exploration going?" and they say "We started the French Revolution last week."

It's a lot. I think we need to require more history classes.

They do work hard to get the geography in, though. I understand a lot of departments don't.

I was impressed though, that all my freshman knew about Stalingrad, when it was mentioned in a novel we're reading. And the lady who teaches U.S. History is amazing.

They should all take four years of history, that's all there is to it. And the U.S. Govt and econ classes should be in addition to, not instead of.

re: #271 snowcrash

{snowcrash} G-d bless him, and your entire family, for his service.

My other uncle was a U.S. Navy engineer aboard the U.S.S. Missouri. The kill rate against Japanese subs was deplorable, because depth charges used contact fuses. It was tough to hit the hulls of the submerged Jap submarines directly with a depth charge. He went back to the lab, and developed a magnetic fuse for the depth charges that would detonate in the proximity of steel hulls. Kill rates went up by an order of magnitude.

My guess is that the counterjihad summit has been folded in to the "free press society" meeting. They're trying to hide it in hopes of putting the controversy behind them.

They are following the same path as our creationists. Outright creationism is attempting to clothe itself as a self-proclaimed educational free-speech movement; c.f. Expelled. The bigots realise that talking about jihad has been marking them as haters, and they're declaring themselves objective reporters now.

As for the fucktard students at Auckland university who protested at New Zealand's historical involvement in "Imperial Wars" I say, "Thank the Lord we do not have to depend on you spineless arseholes to defend our freedom, the very freedom you abuse in your protest"

Here is a great Poem for Memorial Day! Let us all remember, thank and Pray for our Veterans. I am proud to be the son of a Veteran!

In Flanders Fields
By: Lieutenant Colonel John McCrae, MD (1872-1918)
Canadian Army

In Flanders Fields the poppies blow
Between the crosses row on row,
That mark our place; and in the sky
The larks, still bravely singing, fly
Scarce heard amid the guns below.

We are the Dead. Short days ago
We lived, felt dawn, saw sunset glow,
Loved and were loved, and now we lie
In Flanders fields.

Take up our quarrel with the foe:
To you from failing hands we throw
The torch; be yours to hold it high.
If ye break faith with us who die
We shall not sleep, though poppies grow
In Flanders fields.
