The Door Opens - Update: The Door Closes

Open • Views: 2,587

Registration is open for a limited time.

Read all the rules before you register, and commit them to memory. The short version:

  • Don’t register with a proxy.
  • Don’t register with a throwaway email address.
  • Don’t register more than one account at a time.
  • Don’t be a jerk.
  • Don’t be a troll.
  • Don’t be a sock puppet. Stinky hates sock puppets.
  • Do play nice.

And then everything will be groovy.

UPDATE at 5/24/09 4:46:56 pm:

Now closed, with 75 hatchlings and 7 sock puppet attempts (including one outright neo-Nazi, and two people who continually trash LGF at other sites).

My advice- please use a "sarc tag" when being sarcastic (that's a little / at the end of your comment) at least until we get to know your sense of humor.

Also- be sure to ding the Fruitcup. You can find Fruitcup at 2 am Pacific time daily.

"HAIR" usually refers to a whole head of hair, while its plural, "HAIRS", only refers to just a few hairs on a head.

No, someone recognizable from a major party would be the kiss of death. All the major parties are toxic, politically. That's why many do not vote, or even bother to register.

I'm only marginally involved in the Whigs at this point, but I am proposing that any office holder cannot join the Whigs until they have been out of office for as long as they have held any office, i.e. they have to resign and sit it out without political power for a time before they can join the Whigs.

Just a quick question about the rules for registering.

It says "Don't register with a throwaway email address". Does this mean don't register with an email address set up for the purposes of registering and not in normal use? Or does it mean don't register with a web email account (Yahoo, Gmail, etc)?

If the latter, this will probably be a very short visit from me as I only ever use a Yahoo email account. So hello everyone, and preemptively goodbye.

re: #80 Fat Bastard Vegetarian

How does an internet address change. Do you have to move? Seriously. People will do it if that's what they have to do.

Symps? Heh.

It depends on how you connect to the Internet, and exactly how your hosting service does things. With cable services, you typically "lease" an IP address that remains assigned to you indefinitely; it is "renewed" every time you connect, and stays assigned to you until you haven't connected for longer than the "lease period," which varies a lot but is typically on the order of a couple of weeks. For most, who leave their cable modems connected continuously or who log on every day, this makes your IP address effectively constant.

Dial-up accounts get new IP address assigned each time they log on.

It is also possible, even in the case of cable leases, to reset your assigned IP address by twiddling with your router and having it display a "spoofed" MAC address. This forces the cable provider to issue a new IP address.

The IP addresses assigned, whether leased or not, are drawn from the limited subset a given provider has available to it. The provider can always be immediately identified from a portion of the IP address; the leading part of the address remains the same, and only the low-order portions change with each user.

As a practical matter: anyone who is spending their entire life hovering over a site, waiting for those fleeting opportunities to register a hostile account, will almost certainly be using a cable connection, and will be the kind whose entire life consists of trolling the web, so they're connected all the time. These types will ALWAYS have the same IP address, no matter what, and will be extremely easy to identify. Certainly, if you're attempting to register multiple sock puppets during a single registration period, you aren't going to have time for modem twiddling, resetting and reassignment; you're going to stupidly assume that no one is watching, and get stomped on when a simple script attached to the registration form finds your IP address already listed in the site database. And frankly, getting sophisticated just isn't in the nature of either trolls or sockpuppets; their neural capacity is already saturated with hatred and revenge.

re: #172 vxbush

This raises the question of whether Charles could detect if someone was accessing and registering over Tor or some other anonymizer.

You can always get the IP address that a message originates at. Anonymizers, like other service providers, only have a limited range of addresses they can use. And they can't be spoofed; Charle's webserver, for instance, needs a real IP address to send web pages and replies back to. You can hide your own IP address using these services, but it's easy to detect that requests are coming from an anonymizer service, and steps can then be taken to ignore their entire range of addresses, if necessary.

Nine men were arrested after trouble broke out at a march through Luton.

Police said up to 400 people set off on a planned peaceful protest held against demonstrations at a military homecoming parade earlier this year.

Officers said a man was assaulted, a shop window was smashed and several cars were damaged in the town centre on Sunday evening.

Jew Watch? Care to explain?

Did some quick research. Seems to have started out as a Stormfront site which is now run by a James Stenzel (or Jim Stenzel). Full name is James R. Stenzel and it looks like he's from Missouri.

Popular with the inbreds at Stormfront and VNN. Not ironically they are also referenced by a lot of leftists by way of associated Indymedia.

Pour one can artichokes, 8 ounces shreded (not canned) parmesean cheese, 8 ounces mozerella cheese into corningware dish. Microwave until all the cheese is melted. Take out, stir and sprinkle a little paprika on top. Yum Yum.

It should be 'blogocracy' for starters. Beyond that, I would guess that some misapprehended mish mash of the concepts of 'blog' and 'democracy' is involved.

Nah, "blogocracy" would be "rule by weblogs" rather than a democratic rule by individual bloggers. (Really our word "blog" should be istolog - "log" is Greek already, so we may as well take the whole word off that language.)

Istologatorocracy perhaps?

Some garbage from James R. Stenzel:

==Garbage Trimmed==

Admittedly when I bought the site I lived in a free
country and thought it would always remain so. Since
seeing the controversy erupt regarding the report
produced by my home state defining even such mild
dissidents as those who supported Ron Paul for President
as potential domestic terrorist threats and considering
our new governor is the same individual who tried to
pull that nonsense on Weltner about the Katrina victims
donations, I'm beginning to wonder if it was such a
good idea to buy jewwatch after-all.

Ron Paul got wind of that report--to be circulated to
Missouri law-enforcement personnel and it angered him.
He made a formal demand that his name be redacted from
the report and the publicity surrounding that made our
new governor/former prosecuting attorney look pretty
silly. He denied knowledge of the report or the personnel
at the state agency which authored it.

LOL! Yes, the scientific community is guilty of many sins against legibility, all because they were turning an inflected language (Greek) into an agglutinative one like Turkish. It doesn't work for more than two roots.

The weirdoes across the looking glass understand, at least, that "blog" is an English word; not Greek, not academic lingua franca. They have followed Lewis Carroll, and attempted to merge the words internally (Jabberwocky: "chuckle" + "snort" = "chortle"). I don't think they did very well, but they at least started at the right place.

I had my 27th 29th earlier this year.

now while I'm a youngin, got a short story to share.

I was at this party, to support a friend who was having a real rough go of things. She's about 7 years younger than I am, so most of the folks there were her friends.

Young fellow comes up to me, and he must be a lightwieght drinker because he had one drink and was slurring his words (for the record I was drinking straight Irish). And he introduces himself, and then out of the blue says to me:

"You have the face for the dust jacket of a book"

"WTF?" says I.

"Yeah, you know you look very distinguished (I start to bridle and puff myself up) with the glasses and you know the hair" he motions to the light dusting of grey I have.

I coulda killed him.

He didn't condemn all of islam.

This is somewhat interesting. Her former father-in-law was Harold Oshry. This is an excerpt from the paid death notice at the New York Times:

Harold left a legacy of hope for thousands who have been touched by his extraordinary generosity, commitment to humanitarian causes, and passion for Israel and the Jewish people. He embraced the philanthropic traditions of ''tikkun olam'' and instilled these values in his children and grandchildren.

From my understanding (as a result of some quick reading) tikkun olam would object to Pam Geller's stance. Of course this was "just" her father-in-law.

Hey y'all...

I know you can get an RSS feed of the whole site, but is there any way to pull one of the comments to any given entry (like this one, ferinstance)?

Do you think this is nerd tech place, or what?

re: #368 Soona'

A couple of threads ago, I forget who, suggested that the vets change their avatars to their combat unit patches. I have never known how to do it (blissfully ignorant) but people walked me through it and "presto", new avatar.

I found a USN logo and put it up at first - then finally found this one ... several of us who served on her are still in contact - from the early the 60s. Amphibs; Minesweeper; Wooden ships; 173 ft, 60 men, 5 officers. My hat is off to all vets and especially those who served on these. This was the smallest ship allowed by the Navy to cross an ocean. Anything smaller was put inside an LST or other carrier and ferried over.

Forgotten now - some of us are restoring one of the last in existence: [Link: www.usslucid.org...]

Minesweepers motto was "Where the fleet goes, we've been." We were always the first in to clear the way for an amphibious landing.

Jimmah ... whales ...

Hey you! That's Elizabeth Fraser, scotland's best ever singer. Probably. Lyrics translated from the original 'whalesong':

Song to the Siren

On the floating, shapeless oceans
I did all my best to smile
til your singing eyes and fingers
drew me loving into your eyes.

And you sang "Sail to me, sail to me;
Let me enfold you."

Here I am, here I am waiting to hold you.
Did I dream you dreamed about me?
Were you here when I was full sail?

Now my foolish boat is leaning, broken love lost on your rocks.
For you sang, "Touch me not, touch me not, come back tomorrow."
Oh my heart, oh my heart shies from the sorrow.
I'm as puzzled as a newborn child.
I'm as riddled as the tide.
Should I stand amid the breakers?
Or shall I lie with death my bride?

Hear me sing: "Swim to me, swim to me, let me enfold you."
"Here I am. Here I am, waiting to hold you."

Just as long as goddess stays put...

[ducking]

I feel the need to vent my spleen about her one last time, and then I'm done.

She posted over at 2.0 that she "doesn't remember who she gave the prayer list to"... for the love of mike, how much does that tell you about how much she cared about it in the first place, that she would toss it aside in such a cavalier manner? Something that is so important to so many of us?

And today she is ninimizing the sad feelings of people who called her friend here at LGF and have taken her departure to heart.

Does she even realize that people don't want to talk about it here because they are hurt? Does she even care who she hurt, and how badly she hurt them? Based upon her posts over at 2.0 The answer is clearly "no".

I have nothing but disgust for who and what she has become.

/end rant.

re: #167 SixDegrees

I've always wondered how one would tell the difference between one person trying to register a sock puppet, and two people from one household, sharing a computer, who would both like to have lgf accounts and both register - perhaps even at the same time.

Just recalling that day in the faith household when one of us shouted: "Honey! Get in here, Now! Registration is open!"

It must have been her intention to cause as much hurt as possible. I can't see it otherwise. If I were a believer I would want that prayer list reconsecrated or something before anyone touches it.

I know that people really piled on you for initially pointing out her presence over there Jimmah, and I think I may have been one of them... I just couldn't believe that she would be capable of doing something so sad and hurtful.

If you felt that I was being critical with you, I'm sorry.

I am hoping that this was a miscue rather than a window on how she actually thinks.

The window of Soul Scrolls is shatterproof. Behind it are printout machines, row upon row of them; ... What the machines print is prayers, roll upon roll, prayers going out endlessly. They're ordered by Compuphone, I've overheard the Commander's Wife doing it.

re: #537 Irish Rose

Thanks, Irish Rose. It's ok though, I understood that it was upsetting for a lot of people. It was inevitable that I'd get a bit of flak until it was established beyond doubt in everyone's minds. It could be that her wish was to have lizards feeling so conflicted over her move that they'd follow her and side with those cretins too. I certainly saw those assholes over there expressing that wish at the time.

I've seen this issue discussed and I recall GOTC, somewhat, and I went over to the other place some time ago (under another name, but told them they were children and left, bored).

But what was gotc saying anyway, and what pissed her off? Not enough attention to national prayer day over here?
