Wanda: But you think you’re an intellectual, don’t you, ape?

Otto: [superior smile] Apes don’t read philosophy.

Wanda: Yes they do, Otto, they just don’t understand it! Let me correct you on a few things; Aristotle was not Belgian! The central message of Buddhism is not “Every man for himself!” And the London Underground is not a political movement! Those are all mistakes. I looked them up.

Really? It's hilarious!

I must have had a headache when I saw it, because, strangely, it made almost no impression on me. I didn't hate it, I just didn't find it particularly hilarious or memorable. I was quite surprised when it became a "cult" movie, because I only had the vaguest recollection of what it was even about or that I had even seen it at all. And I had been watching Monty Python reruns for years, so it's not like I was unfamiliar with the style of humor.

One of those things, I guess.

Important:

Statement from the president regarding North Korea

Text of statement by President Barack Obama on nuclear and short-range missile tests conducted by North Korea.

Today, North Korea said that it has conducted a nuclear test in violation of international law. It appears to also have attempted a short range missile launch. These actions, while not a surprise given its statements and actions to date, are a matter of grave concern to all nations. North Korea's attempts to develop nuclear weapons, as well as its ballistic missile program, constitute a threat to international peace and security.

By acting in blatant defiance of the United Nations Security Council, North Korea is directly and recklessly challenging the international community. North Korea's behavior increases tensions and undermines stability in Northeast Asia. Such provocations will only serve to deepen North Korea's isolation. It will not find international acceptance unless it abandons its pursuit of weapons of mass destruction and their means of delivery.

The danger posed by North Korea's threatening activities warrants action by the international community. We have been and will continue working with our allies and partners in the Six-Party Talks as well as other members of the U.N. Security Council in the days ahead.

Trivia time: In 1973, the best-selling book The Other Side of Midnight was released. During the peak of its popularity, many studios were clamoring for the right to turn this popular book into a movie.

Author Sidney Sheldon finally signed the rights to 20th Century Fox, and the release date was finally announced, 4 years later.

At the time, 20th Century Fox had another movie property that was constantly growing in expense, and that no one really expected to draw people into theaters. They had so much trouble trying to get theaters to buy this less-desirable property, they finally told theaters that, if they didn't take this other property and show it for at least 1 full week, they wouldn't be eligible to show The Other Side of Midnight.

Considering that The Other Side of Midnight was one of the most long-awaited movies, many theaters had little choice but to comply.

Strangely enough, The Other Side of Midnight turned out to be a flop.

The saving grace for theaters, however, turned out to be the other movie to which 20th Century Fox had tagged to The Other Side of Midnight.

What movie was it?

STAR WARS

Happy 32nd birthday, Star Wars!

Its a problem.

I don't know how it could be done, but the only way to make China want to agree to a solution is to hold them directly responsible for what North Korea says and does. If they are going to protect the little dictator and guarantee his little nightmare kingdom, then they should be made to feel the weight of that policy. As it stands now, they pay no price.

Generally, yes. But just not that film. I also find Kevin Kline's humor usually not very funny, and the same with Jamie Lee Curtis, and I think they ruined the film for me. I also thought that Monty Python's "stuttering" humor was their weakest skit.

I watch British comedy films all day long, and have seen just about every one ever made. But "Wanda" wasn't even on my radar as among the best.

Is he the middle *witch* bottom row, at the 1:50 mark?

Oh, and you are an evil, evil man for giving me these flashbacks...

Nope - right at the beginning. There's a witch with a top hat instead of a pointy hat - that's him. You'll notice he has to be dragged back while still looking around.

Now that you say that - the middle witch in the bottom row does look like him, though! However, that same witch can be seen in the same shot just behind him, also at the 0:04 mark.

Tomorrow's headline: "Davy Jones shuts down LGF's servers!"

Now this is just plain freaky if true:

David Bowie is widely regarded as one of the most influential writers of pop music. Born David Jones, he changed his name to Bowie in the 1960s, to avoid confusion with the then well-known Davy Jones (lead singer of The Monkees).

re: #96 FurryOldGuyJeans

Yep - it's true.

In the same vein, in the days when magician Mark Wilson was frequently on TV, there was another young performer who aspired to be a magician, and happened to have the name Marc Wilson.

To avoid confusion, he changed his last name as well. He never got a really big magic career going, but he does have a nice career in television going for him:

Next week's episode is where they pick the winner.

I think at this point they pretty much have to have her as the winner. Do you know anybody who can even name another contestant on Britain's Got Talent?!?

Think about the drop in ratings they'd suffer the next season if Susan Boyle lost!

Yeah, the city and 300-400 yard shots don't go together.

I am a dyed in the wool "eat it if you hunt it" guy, with prairie dogs being the only exception. It is tough to explain long distance shooting to those who haven't tried it. Completely different than skeet shooting, if you ever tried that (which I highly recommend).

121 gmsc  Mon, May 25, 2009 1:30:17am

Compare and contrast:

On one hand, we have Susan Boyle, who nobody thought would ever really have a chance in the music world. Thanks to her recent TV appearances, though, she's got the world eating out of her hand.

On the other hand, we have Elizabeth Alexander, a poet who has a few breaks. A book of her poems was released earlier this year, and the publisher was so confident of her book's success that they printed 100,000 copies as the initial run! She even read one of her original poems at 0bama's inauguration! And how is she doing now? 93,000+ copies of her book are still either on bookstore shelves, or still sitting in warehouses.

It doesn't seem like it often enough, but true talent will out.

The USN EC-121M shoot-down occurred on the birthday of Kim Il-Sung. It was a secretly-arranged surprise birthday present to daddy from his loving son, Kim Jong-Il, who is currently North Korea's revered Dear Leader. He had the two MiG's secretly shipped to a remote airfield where they waited for the orders to take off and attack.

These 31 members of the US military were flying at least 40 miles from North Korean air space when they were ambushed and murdered in cold blood. They awoke early in Japan that morning, said "See you tonight" to friends and family, and took off from Atsugi at 7am on a routine surveillance flight, straight into harm's way.

Kim has been habitually sticking it to the USA for over 40 years.

Three years before this incident, I was once an aircrewman on the same airplane that Dear Kim ordered shot out of the sky. I'd like to meet the little pervert in person, just to show him my version of 'Remember the Alamo.'

Happy Memorial Day, folks.

Sharmuta,

I had this discussion with my little brother who - in his old age - decided he wants a singing career NOW...

There's singing a song technically correct with a great voice (which my brother can do), and then there's owning a song. I think Susan Boyle was much more emotionally involved with I Had a Dream than she is with Memory.

I hope whatever her final song is has the same feeling.

Someone Else's Thought For The Day

From cartoonist John Cox:

"The object of war isn't to die for your country, but to make the other bastard die for theirs."

-- General George S. Patton, Jr.

Now there are some folks, who regard themselves as morally superior beings, who question why the other bastard has to die. The answer of course is that the other bastard is attempting to impose his will, or the will of his leader, upon you by force. It is the act of coercion by force that makes what General Patton called the other bastard an enemy.

Peace is simply the absence of enemies.

But there are some folks, who pretend to be morally superior beings, who would have us believe that "peace" could be achieved by submission to the will of the other bastard. In reality this is not peace, it is slavery.

There are some well meaning people, some of whom that I respect, who believe that there are times that one cannot have both peace and freedom at the same time.

I have to disagree.

Liberty is simply the condition of existence in which the person is free to live his own life in accordance with his own rational judgment. This does cf course require the absence of some other bastard who is attempting to impose his will upon the person by force.

In practical terms real peace and real freedom are inseparable. I will go further is saying that to a civilized person, peace, freedom, and security, are simply three words that can be used to describe the identical condition, the absence of another bastard imposing his will upon the civilized person.

Contrary to what those who describe themselves as peace activists would have us believe, and as General Patton has ably demonstrated, the path to real peace invariably takes us over the real dead bodies of those other bastards who insist on violently imposing their will upon us.

Unfortunately this process is by no means a safe one.

Let us take this day to remember those died on the path to real peace.

re: #44 Syrah

Its a problem.

I don't know how it could be done, but the only way to make China want to agree to a solution is to hold them directly responsible for what North Korea says and does. If they are going to protect the little dictator and guarantee his little nightmare kingdom, then they should be made to feel the weight of that policy. As it stands now, they pay no price.

A grass-roots boycott of Chinese goods in the United States could provide plenty of pressure. China's exports, their only source of wealth, have plummeted over the last several months, and their national growth rate is now significantly below the point where the government wants it; unemployment is rearing it's head, and people are quick to point fingers at Beijing. Even the threat of a boycott would make China sit up and pay attention.

Of course, there's no one to lead such an action. But if people started flipping over merchandise and bypassing even a small number of the products stamped with "Made in China," or started demanding that store owners provide a choice of products made elsewhere (Hint: like in the United States) the message would get out in a hurry.

Possible downside, that I'm willing to put up with: rejection of Chinese goods would probably boost inflation; it's hard to beat the prices of products produced using slave labor and government-subsidized industry. And this is not a good time for that to happen; there are inflationary rumblings in the not-too-distant future.

But China is key to this problem. It's a problem they can solve with a single action: opening their border. North Korea would drain itself into China almost overnight looking for food. China gains yet another source of cheap labor (well, it already has that; NK does a lot of work that China contracts out already) and Kimmy has no one to rule. There is nothing the US can do that would even come close to effecting a solution.

Greets and saluts from the NYC metro area on this glorious Memorial Day. I see that the North Koreans have chosen to carry out a nuclear test - and a successful one at that. The weapon appears to have been in the 10-20 kt range, which puts it in a Hiroshima/Nagasaki sized weapon.

The test was bad enough. That no one in the intel community saw it coming is far worse.

Something to cheer you up:

15 Reasons to move to Texas!

In case things get a little tough during the next few months, we Texans have a plan. Maybe you don't know it, but Texas is the only state with a legal right to secede from the Union (Reference the Texas-American Annexation Treaty of 1848.)

We Texans love y'all Americans, but we'll probably have to take action since Barack Obama won the election and is now the President of the U.S.A. We'll miss ya'll though.

Here is what can happen:

1. If President Barack Hussein Obama can turn the USA into a socialist state, then Texas can surely exercise its Constitutional option to secede from the Union.

2. George W. Bush can become President again - OF TEXAS! He don't talk too pretty and he has always given ample evidence of low brain-wave activity. We didn't experience another terrorist attack when he was President of the USA, however, and we Texans have enough experience with the goodhearted the man to 'redirect' him whenever he 'strays'.

So what would Texas have to do to survive as a republic apart from the remaining 49 United States?

1. NASA is just south of Houston, Texas. We will control the space industry.

2. We refine over 85% of the gasoline in the United States.

3. Defense Industry - we have over 65% of it. The motto 'Don't mess with Texas'! would take on a whole new meaning.

4. Oil - we can supply all the oil that the Republic of Texas will need for the next 300 years. What will the other states do? Gee, we don't know. Why not ask Obama?

5. Natural Gas - again, we have all we need and it's too bad about those Northern States. John Kerry and Al Gore will just have to figure out a way to keep them warm.

6. Computer Industry - we lead the nation in producing computer chips and communications equipment - small companies like Texas Instruments, Dell Computer, EDS, Raytheon, National Semiconductor, Motorola, Intel, AMD, Atmel, Applied Materials, Dallas Semi-conductor, Nortel, Alcatel, etc. The list goes on and on.

7. Medical Care - We have the research centers for cancer research, the best burn centers and the top trauma units in the world, as well as other large health centers. The Houston Medical Center alone

employs over 65,000 people.

8. We have enough colleges to keep educating and making smarter citizens: University of Texas, Texas A&M, Texas Tech, Texas Christian, Rice, SMU, University of Dallas, University of Houston, Baylor, UNT (University of North Texas), Texas Women's University, etc. Ivy grows better in the South anyway.

9. We have an intelligent and energetic work force and it isn't restricted by a bunch of unions. Here in Texas, we are a Right to Work State and, therefore, it's every man and woman for themselves. We just go out and get the job done. And if we don't like the way one company operates, we get a job somewhere else.

10. We have essential control of the paper, plastics, and insurance industries, etc.

11. In case of a foreign invasion, we have the Texas National Guard, the Texas Air National Guard, and several military bases. We don't have an Army, but since everybody down here has at least six rifles and a pile of ammo, we can raise an Army in 24 hours if we need one. If the situation really gets bad, we can always call the Department of Public Safety and ask them to send over the Texas Rangers.

12. We are totally self-sufficient in beef, poultry, hogs, and several types of grain, fruit and vegetables, and let's not forget seafood from the Gulf. Also, everybody down here knows how to cook them so that they taste good. We don't need any food.

13. Three of the ten largest cities in the United States, and twenty-three of the 100 largest cities in the United States are located in Texas. And Texas also has more land than California, New York, New Jersey, Connecticut, Delaware, Hawaii, Massachusetts,

Maryland, Rhode Island, and Vermont combined.

14. Trade: Three of the ten largest ports in the United States are located in Texas

208 infidel4ever  Mon, May 25, 2009 5:38:31am

15. We also manufacture cars down here, but we don't need to. You see, nothing rusts in Texas so our vehicles stay beautiful and run well for decades.

This just names a few of the items that will keep the Republic of Texas in good shape. There isn't a thing out there that we need and don't have.

Now to the rest of you folks in the United States under President Obama:

Since you won't have the refineries to get gas for your cars, only President Obama will be able to drive around in his big 9 mpg SUV. The rest of the United States will have to walk or ride bikes.

You won't have any TV as the Space Center in Houston will cut off satellite communications.

You won't have any natural gas to heat your homes, but since Mr. Obama has predicted global warming, you will not need the gas as long as you survive the 2000 years it will take to get enough heat from Global Warming. There is plenty of blow hard heat coming out of DC though! In other words, the rest of ya'll in the USA are screwed!

Signed, the People of Texas

I definitely agree with that. Yet another round of talks and offers of aid in exchange for NK's goodwill would be a disaster - a reward for continued bad behavior. It worked with Clinton; it almost worked with Bush; now it's time to see if it will work with Obama.

Again, I would be pleased to see the US dump the entire problem in China's lap. Let them know Kimmy is their problem, and the extent of our participation is going to be limited to doing everything possible to keep aid from reaching NK until they show real, tangible changes in behavior and progress in dismantling their nuclear program. Screw the carrot; they're not going to chase it. Let 'em starve for a while.

On-the-ground intelligence is certainly lacking in NK. But that's not for lack of trying. It's probably the most tightly-controlled state in the world, and it's just damn hard to get boots on the ground there. It isn't just a problem for the US; nobody has good coverage of NK. So we can't even rely on the intelligence sharing we enjoy with so many of our allies.

We excel at remote sensing, but remote sensing has it's limitations. Can't see underground, can't pick up on relatively small movements of people and equipment. It's geared more for large-scale surveillance and facilities that are out in the open. Clandestine operations, not so much.

If you're suggesting that intel should have NK's daily schedule of testing, that seems to be asking for a bit much. I don't think there was any question that a second test was in the offing, though. The precise date and time may have come as a surprise, but Kimmy's tantrum a few weeks back over the UN's condemnation of his missle test and his withdrawal from the Six Party talks made it pretty clear he was setting the stage for yet another round of brinkmanship.

It is clear that N.Korea And other rogue nations of their ilk now know America has a “soft” president” We are now seen as a weak, ineffectual vacillating dinosaur that does not have to be taken seriously at all. Welcome to the world of a “do nothing ” U.S.A.This is just the beginning. Now the next in line to get out of hand is Iran/Hezbollah-Hamas. Their suitcase nukes are on order from North Korea as well as their nuclear tipped missiles and It is now known that America will run away from confrontation at every turn, more concerned with Khaled Sheikh Muhammad’s water-boarding that with Dire national security threats. In the minds of these despots “softness” is known as weakness and this weakness is the white flag of cut and run defeatism and apologia that our current administration proffers as our “new national security policy’ The clock is running and we are short of time….

I'm going to be putting up a post for Memorial Day in a minute, but want you all to know that it ends with a link to a song on Imeem. If you used Norton anti-virus, you may get a message warning you about the site. The message is in error. I've personally scanned with my Norton Internet Security on three occasions, and two other anti-virus/malware systems and it comes up "clean". Moreover, hundreds of other people have notified Norton of the same issue/resolution. Norton has said it's "investigating" and will re-write it's code.

I am honored to express my gratitude to all of the men and women of the US Armed Forces who died wearing the uniform of the United States of America (or who died subsequently from their actions while wearing said uniform) and to their families who feel their individual loss more sharply on this “official” day of Memorial. As the sole remaining man of my very small band of brothers, today is an especially difficult one for me.
But we need to ask: why did those troops die (either in wartime or “peacetime”)? The obvious answer is that they died protecting America. But WHICH America were they protecting? For surely America during the days of WWII (entering a recession when the War ended) differed from the America during the days of WW I (just about to enter the “roaring 20’s” with prosperity for nearly everyone willing to work for it). And of course America today is VASTLY different from the America of WWII or Korea, or Vietnam or Gulf War I. Indeed, Memorial Day was first observed in 1868 and did not honor the men who fought for the Confederate States of America.
I think the answer is the same: despite economic and social differences, America has always been, at heart, about FREEDOM. Indeed, America is the only nation with the Bill of Rights and all of the guaranties granted to the citizens therein. Some of our oldest friends and with whom we have so much in common, Canada and Great Britain, have no protection of freedom of speech comparable to ours. We do not have “Hate Speech” or ” Hate Crimes Tribunal”, we are still free to run out into the street and curse out our political leaders without fear of being arrested and dragged off in the middle of the night, never to be seen or heard from again. And while our Freedoms are still evolving, those enshrined in the Bill of Rights are being expanded. All of those troops who made the Ultimate Sacrifice knew the America that they were defending, in every war. And they loved it so much they were willing to risk and give their lives for it.
Now the Bill of Rights also provides for Freedom of Worship, which necessarily means Freedom not to Worship and I would never ask you all to Pray with me for those troops who lost their lives so that we could live our lives in Freedom and, indeed, so that America could remain the Beacon Of Freedom for the entire World.
But I would ask you all to please click on this short (2:29) song, listen and bow your heads for a minute in pride and remembrance of all those who gave all for all of us and our children:

I may not believe in an afterlife, but I do believe the fallen "live on" in the daily reminder that the civilian population is safe for their efforts.

People like me may question why they try to make the rest of the world better when there are places in America that need work. But perhaps it's their efforts that ensure that we at home have the opportunity to make America better while they take care of the people who might make it worse.

re: #275 laZardo Good moring my friend. The simple answer is that America was conceived as an Idea. No one had ever tried goverment where the Governed do the actual governing.
Thus America -the Idea - is always evolving - trying to improve itself and giving aid to those in need, here or around the World. That's why so many people from all over the World want to come here.

A local weekly newspaper was firebombed in 1989, in apparent retaliation for an editorial. And a group of men including a Palestinian angry at Israel tossed homemade bombs through a temple's door in 2000.
The newest case evokes both painful memories and new anguish for the heavily Jewish community, which prides itself on tolerance and embracing diversity. One of the temples authorities say was targeted, the Riverdale Jewish Center, has provided a Muslim exchange student with space to pray near her school...

Explosion Shatters Windows of City Starbucks

NEW YORK (AP) -- An explosion has shattered the windows of a Starbucks coffee shop in New York City, but no injuries are being reported.

New York Police Department Lt. Mike Wyosokowski says police are trying to determine what caused the blast early Monday morning at the intersection of 92nd Street and Third Avenue on Manhattan's Upper East Side. He says the explosion occurred at around 3:30 a.m.

The coffee shop was closed at the time.

The city has experienced other predawn explosions in recent years at the British and Mexican consulates and at a military recruiting station in Times Square.

Openness for Thee, but Not for Me
Obama gives a whole new definition to 'transparency.'

For months, several news organizations--including THE WEEKLY STANDARD (see my "Second Thoughts," written with Thomas Joscelyn, in the March 16 issue)--have been trying to obtain a copy of the Pentagon's analysis of Guantánamo Bay detainee recidivism.

Despite the fact that we were told the report would be released in early February, and despite the fact that the Obama administration has proclaimed itself the most transparent administration in history, and despite a presidential memorandum ordering executive agencies and departments to treat Freedom of Information Act requests with a "presumption in favor of disclosure"--the Pentagon has actually taken additional steps to hide the report and keep it from both the public and lawmakers of both parties.

We were told on February 2 that the report would likely be posted on the Pentagon website that afternoon. When we followed up, we were instructed to check back "in a couple days." We made several additional attempts to obtain the report, and, on March 6, the Pentagon officially went into denial mode: "My understanding is that several requests have been received by our OSD FOIA office and it is being processed for a decision concerning release. If you would like to submit a FOIA request as well, below is a link for your convenience." Thanks to an unauthorized leak, the New York Times was able to write about the report last Thursday. According to the Times:

Two administration officials who spoke on condition of anonymity said the report was being held up by Defense Department employees fearful of upsetting the White House, at a time when even Congressional Democrats have begun to show misgivings over Mr. Obama's plan to close Guantánamo. The report shows that 74 detainees released from Guantánamo have returned to jihad--some 14 percent. In his speech Thursday, Obama went to great lengths to blame the release of these detainees on the Bush administration. Fair enough. One suspects that this was just a convenient political argument. But if he was sincere, and he honestly believes the Bush administration was too lenient in its judgments about detainees, he should release the report and show us the error of their ways. ...

Memorial Day is when you can start wearing white shoes.

But seriously, I have Memorial Day down, because we always used to buy huge armfuls of peonies to decorate the graves, and the cemetery would always be hopping - at least the Catholic one that we went to. I suspect the Protestant one across the road also. I used to work at the AEC compound, and you had to actually go through the cemetery area to get there - I'd always think of Memorial Day when I drove through.

Will President Obama Send a Wreath to Confederate Memorial at Arlington?
Scholars Appeal to Obama to End Presidential Tradition on Memorial Day

...The White House did not say whether Obama would send a wreath on Monday.

The Confederate monument at Arlington dates back to 1914, when it was unveiled on the 106th anniversary of the birthday of the president of the Confederacy, Jefferson Davis.

In the early days, though hundreds of Confederate soldiers were buried at Arlington, it was considered a Union cemetery and family members of Confederate soldiers buried there were not allowed to visit the graves.

In 1900, Congress authorized a special section of Arlington to be set aside as a burial location for nearly 500 Confederate soldiers. They are buried in concentric circles, with the monument built in the center.

On June 4, 1914, President Woodrow Wilson spoke at the monument as veterans from the Union and Confederate Armies laid wreaths on the graves, as a symbol of unity.

Since then, American presidents have sent a wreath to adorn the monument. President George H. W. Bush changed the traditionby sending a wreath on Memorial Day, not on Davis' birthday as his predecessors had done.

I'm guessing not.

If it hasn't been posted already, the lyrics from "TAPS" on this special day for our fallen heroes

Fading light dims the sight
And a star gems the sky, gleaming bright
From afar drawing nigh,
Falls the night.

Day is done, gone the sun
From the lakes, from the hills, from the sky
All is well, safely rest;
God is nigh.
Then goodnight, peaceful night;
Till the light of the dawn shineth bright.
God is near, do not fear,
Friend, goodnight.

Beautiful..There are only 24 notes to TAPS..24 of the loneliest notes known to mankind..
How many tears have been shed to those 24 notes? How many lives have been changed..How many families just devastated while taps was played?
How many Hero's has that song buried?
24 notes...

Thoughtful Obama vs. Snarling Cheney

337 NJDhockeyfan  Mon, May 25, 2009 7:23:15am

Good morning!

Looks like NK tested three short-range missiles after the nuke test according to DEBKA. I had read it was only one last night.

Also from the article:

Tokyo and other regional capitals are tensely watching to see how Washington handles the second crisis precipitated by Pyongyang less than a month after it tested a ballistic missile. Tehran is just as agog. DEBKAfile's military sources note that North Korea and Iran are closely and secretly coordinated on their military nuclear programs.

Now the world is going to see if O can back up all the hopeychange talk which is supposed to make the world safer.

338 _RememberTonyC  Mon, May 25, 2009 7:23:40am

I have been thinking about the Colin Powell/Dick Cheney/Rush Limbaugh circle jerk of the past days and weeks. And I think all of them are partially right and partially wrong. My thoughts ...

Dick and Rush
I agree on plenty of issues with both men. Cheney is the only Republican politician to challenge Obama's lunacy in the areas where he is wrong. Rush also makes a lot of sense and skewers the hypocrisy of his leftist opponents. Both are valuable republican voices. But for me, the bad news is that both seem to want all Republicans to more or less pass some sort of loyalty test. I like Republican policies, but since I am pro choice, I would fail their test. There are others like me that will be shunned by the "true believers" and it's a recipe for a shrinking party.

Colin
I agree with him that the party needs to be inclusive, but he is hypocritical when he makes that statement. The 2008 Republican nominee (McCain) was the most "inclusive" candidate the GOP could possibly have put forth. And in addition, like Powell, he was a military man. So what does Powell do? He endorses the most far left candidate ever to run for president. A man who hangs with the likes of Ayres and Wright? Gee Colin ... is it possible you endorsed Obama for some reason other than his policies? Call me cynical, but there's only one thing I can see that you and Obama have in common.

Get Ready for Another North Korean Nuke Test
Iran could soon be following Pyongyang's example.

...In October 2006, North Korea witnessed the incredible diplomatic success it could reap from belligerence. Its first nuclear test brought resumption of the six-party talks, which gave Kim Jong Il cover to further advance his nuclear program.

Now, Kim is poised to succeed again by following precisely the same script. In April, Pyongyang launched a Taepodong-2 missile, and National Security Council official Gary Samore recently confirmed that a second nuclear test is likely on the way. The North is set to try two U.S. reporters for "hostile acts." The state-controlled newspaper calls America "a rogue and a gangster." Kim recently expelled international monitors from the Yongbyon nuclear complex. And Pyongyang threatens to "start" enriching uranium -- a capacity it procured long ago.

A second nuclear test is by no means simply a propaganda ploy. Most experts believe that the 2006 test was flawed, producing an explosive yield well below even what the North's scientists had predicted. The scientific and military imperatives for a second test have been strong for over two years, and the potential data, experience and other advantages of further testing would be tremendous.

What the North has lacked thus far is the political opportunity to test without fatally jeopardizing its access to the six-party talks and the legitimacy they provide. Despite the State Department's seemingly unbreakable second-term hold over President Bush, another test after 2006 just might have ended the talks.

So far, the North faces no such threat from the Obama administration. Despite Pyongyang's aggression, Mr. Bosworth has reiterated that the U.S. is "committed to dialogue" and is "obviously interested in returning to a negotiating table as soon as we can." This is precisely what the North wants: America in a conciliatory mode, eager to bargain, just as Mr. Bush was after the 2006 test.

If the next nuclear explosion doesn't derail the six-party talks, Kim will rightly conclude that he faces no real danger of ever having to dismantle his weapons program. North Korea is a mysterious place, but there is no mystery about its foreign-policy tactics: They work. The real mystery is why our administrations -- Republican and Democratic -- haven't learned that their quasi-religious faith in the six-party talks is misplaced. ...

As predicted.

345 Ateam  Mon, May 25, 2009 7:27:53am

Why the world so unhinged and moved attends a little nuclear experiment executed by N.Korea ? all they want is to reunite with their brothers in the south. Together they will live peacefully like a big Hopey family in the people-democratic-social one-party country, under leadership of the (Real) One for the rest of his life.

President Obama has named Thomas Frieden, the New York City health commissioner who championed a ban on artificial trans fats, as the new director of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Dr. Frieden's campaign forced McDonald's to change the way it cooks french fries -- you may have noticed the taste -- and he has lately called for all restaurants to use less salt. Let's hope he spends at least some of his time considering flu pandemics and bioterrorism.

In any case, when Dr. Frieden arrives in Washington, he'll find an ally in Michael Jacobson, head of the Naderite Center for Science in the Public Interest. Mr. Jacobson has made a career attacking ethnic restaurants, fast-food chains and grocery manufacturers for allegedly unhealthy fare. While he may be the last guy you'd want at your barbecue, Mr. Jacobson was recently an honored guest at Senate Finance. At a hearing to brainstorm on ways to pay for Mr. Obama's new health-care entitlement, Mr. Jacobson recommended that Congress enact a 50% reduction in the salt content of America's food supply, a tax of up to one cent per ounce on soft drinks, and a tripling of the federal excise tax on beer, to roughly 16 cents a can.

Is government to be the servant of the people, or their (thigh)master? Mr. Jacobson's view of the role of government was illuminated by his gripe that since 1991 beer has been taxed at a flat $18 per barrel. "Since then, inflation has robbed the Treasury of more than one-third the value of the taxes," he said.

The committee staff was apparently listening, because a Senate Finance report released this week listed a federal beer tax increase and a new levy on soft drinks among the options for financing new health-care spending. In sum, Washington looks set to provide you with a host of new incentives to enjoy grilled veggies and a refreshing glass of water at your next cookout.

This doesn't mean that the feds are taking all the fun out of the weekend when we rightly honor Americans who have sacrificed their lives in war. After all, many Americans tune in each year to watch the Indianapolis 500 auto race, and the sport is sure to win new suburban fans now that Detroit has been ordered to make more fuel-efficient cars. We can only imagine the thrill of hearing the high-pitched whine of hybrid engines as low-emission vehicles achieve speeds exceeding 80 miles per hour. Though perhaps "the greatest spectacle in racing" will soon be presenting itself as "a sustainable activity, when appropriately balanced with carbon offsets."

The 24-year-old, who wore a T-shirt with the words 'No surrender to Al-Qaeda' on it, said: 'We decided enough was enough after the soldiers got heckled as they marched through the town centre by the Muslim extremists.

'Our community has been racially attacked for the last 10 years.

This is going to get coyote-ugly. This could spark a nuclear arms race in East Asia as everybody tries to deter North Korea. Which has ugly byproducts. Few Americans realize either the capability of Japan to build atomic arms, or the fears that most of the region has of Japan. World War II left deep scars.

And remember, Obama is trying to kill sustainable nuclear weapons research in the FY10 budget. We won't even be able to deter the Norks - which puts even more pressure on Japan, Australia, and South Korea to nuclearize.

Democrat activist posing as a journalist, sounding like an idiot:

STEPHANOPOULOS: Let me move on to the issue of Iran. You said that Iran is on a path to building nuclear weapons. But the 2007 National Intelligence Estimate concluded with a high degree of confidence that Iran had halted its nuclear weapons programs. * So do you believe that intelligence estimate is outdated? Is it no longer accurate?

MULLEN: Well, I believe then and I still believe that Iran's strategic objective is to achieve nuclear weapons, and that that path continues. Their leadership is committed to it. They conducted a missile test this last week that was successful, which continues to improve their missile delivery system and capability. Their intent seems very clear to me, and I'm one who believes if they achieve that objective, that it is incredibly destabilizing for the region. And I think eventually for the world.

STEPHANOPOULOS: You said it's their intent. But do you believe they've restarted their actual nuclear weapons program?

MULLEN: I haven't seen -- or I wouldn't speak to any details about what they are doing with respect to that. Although, I remain concerned that while intelligence estimates focus on what we know, I'm concerned about what Iran might be doing that we don't know.

If Stephanopoulos had even bothered to read the 2007 NIE he would know the report stated that Iran temporarily suspended the warhead development phase of the nuclear program from 2003 to 2005. After that date, the intelligence community believed with a moderate degree of assurace, the Iranians restarted the weaponization phase. During that whole period, the Iranians never stopped the missile phase or the fissile materials production phase of their nuclear program. Stephanopoulos continues to peddle the erroneous notion that Iran ever stopped their nuclear program. They did not.

...Once, 25 years ago, my father (U.S. Army, replacement troops, Italy, 1945) visited Washington, a town he'd never been to. There was a lot to see: the White House, the Lincoln Memorial. But he just wanted to see one thing, Audie Murphy's grave.

Audie Leon Murphy was born in 1924 or 1926 (more on that in a moment) the sixth of 12 children of a Texas sharecropper. It was all hardscrabble for him: father left, mother died, no education, working in the fields from adolescence on. He was good with a hunting rifle: he said that when he wasn't, his family didn't eat, so yeah, he had to be good. He tried to join the Army after Pearl Harbor, was turned away as underage, came back the next year claiming to be 18 (he was probably 16) and went on to a busy war, seeing action as an infantryman in Sicily, Salerno and Anzio. Then came southern France, where the Germans made the mistake of shooting Audie Murphy's best friend, Lattie Tipton. Murphy wiped out the machine gun crew that did it.

On Jan. 26, 1945, Lt. Murphy was engaged in a battle in which his unit took heavy fire and he was wounded. He ordered his men back. From his Medal of Honor citation: "Behind him . . . one of our tank destroyers received a direct hit and began to burn. Its crew withdrew to the woods. 2d Lt. Murphy continued to direct artillery fire, which killed large numbers of the advancing enemy infantry. With the enemy tanks abreast of his position, 2d Lt. Murphy climbed on the burning tank destroyer, which was in danger of blowing up at any moment, and employed its .50 caliber machine gun against the enemy. He was alone and exposed to German fire from three sides, but his deadly fire killed dozens of Germans and caused their infantry attack to waver. The enemy tanks, losing infantry support, began to fall back."

Murphy returned to Texas a legend. He was also 5-foot-7, having grown two inches while away. He became an actor (44 films, mostly Westerns) and businessman. He died in a plane crash in 1971 and was buried with full honors at Arlington, but he did a warrior-like thing. He asked that the gold leaf normally put on the gravestone of a Medal of Honor recipient not be used. He wanted a plain GI headstone. Some worried this might make his grave harder to find. My father found it, and he was not alone. Audie Murphy's grave is the most visited site at Arlington with the exception of John F. Kennedy's eternal flame...

Iran temporarily suspended the warhead development phase of the nuclear program from 2003 to 2005. They did not.

he certainly did last year.
it was ridiculous when he addressed a group of military men and women and actually said, i see a lot of people here in the audience who we honor on this day.
it is amazing that the c.i.c. didn't understand the difference btw memorial day and veterans day.
obviously these holidays are not that important to him.

I see no problem with acknowledging and honoring the living Vets on this day, many on this blog are making the same "mistake" and I for one, see no problem with that.

Yes. CSN&Y wrote several protest songs. But The Cost of Freedom was apolitical. People on both sides of the Vietnam War debate could sing that song together. That's probably why that song has stood up longer than the more topical protest songs.

Geithner is running his mouth again:
Geithner Dismisses GOP Socialism Charge as 'Ridiculous

Treasury Secretary Timothy Geithner admits private investors are worried about investing in new government-backed commercial mortgage securities and dismisses as "ridiculous" a recent Republican National Committee resolution stating that Democratic policies bordered on socialism.

"There's still a bit of concern about whether, if you participated in these programs, you'll face in the future some change in the rules of the game, and that's causing a bit of -- a bit of concern," Geithner told The Post's Lois Romano for her continuing "Voices of Power" interview series. Private investors have expressed interest in the program, the government will work to limit their concern and he anticipates they will be "a good deal for the American taxpayer."

It's ridiculous cause they are leaning more toward Marxism than socialism.

The problem with these protests is the fact the organizations involved are overtly violent, racist, neo-fascists. That fact undermines any support ordinary conservative Brits would extend to the effort to oppose the creeping jihad. The vast majority of people in the UK will have reject the Fascists. People should oppose sharia & jihad by embracing liberal democracy, not by lurching into racism & fascism.

No they don't. I just read the speech that lionheart intended to to give at the demonstration. It essentially calls for ethnic cleansing and vigilantism. He never got the oppostunity to give the speech because the crod was more interested in attacking minorities and Muslim owned businesses.

These people whip up hysteria and then stand back saying "that wasn't me, guv" when the rioting starts. That's what they are all about.

Good morning Afrocity! I'm NOT SURE of this, but I think when one is a civilian, he puts his(or her) hand over the heart; however, Obama is the Commander-in-Chief and it wouldn't bother me if he saluted instead, but of course he'd get criticized either way.

BTW, I went back to your blog and read your Memorial Day piece yesterday - truly excellent in every respect. I don't have a blog, but I'd appreciate it if you'd read my #269 and let me know what you think about it.

I think it's more like them being punks in school. When they're in Math Class with the tough teacher, not a word or problem. As soon as the young substitute takes the class for a day or two, the punks start chewing gum in class, then put their feet up on the desks ,, then start shooting spitballs ,,, they keep pushing and pushing to see how much they can get away with

From the annals of the dangerously stupid:

Homeopath accused of manslaughter

The trial of a couple accused of the manslaughter of their daughter by gross criminal negligence continues before an Australian court.

Homeopath Thomas Sam, 42, and his 36-year-old wife Manju have pleaded not guilty to the death of Gloria Thomas, their 9-month-old daughter. ...Gloria’s eczema was so bad that passengers on the plane back to Australia thought she was suffering from burns or was covered in tumours, and was in inconsolable pain. Despite this, it took eight days for her parents to take her to Sydney Children’s Hospital, where she succumbed to sepsis three days later.

Remarks at the Vietnam Veterans Memorial (November 11, 1988)
Ronald Wilson Reagan

Well, thank you, Jack Wheeler, thank you very much. I shall treasure that gift. And to all of you, thanks, and good morning.

Before I begin, let me take a moment to congratulate the Vietnam Veterans Memorial Fund and the other distinguished guests without whom the construction and operation of this memorial would not have been possible. Let me also say that America is grateful to the hundreds of Vietnam veterans who, when I asked them to join my administration, did so, and have and are serving our nation so proudly. For your devotion to America, I salute you.

We're gathered today, just as we have gathered before, to remember those who served, those who fought, those still missing, and those who gave their last full measure of devotion for our country. We're gathered at a monument on which the names of our fallen friends and loved ones are engraved, and with crosses instead of diamonds beside them, the names of those whose fate we do not yet know. One of those who fell wrote, shortly before his death, these words: "Take what they have left and what they have taught you with their dying and keep it with your own. And take one moment to embrace those gentle heroes you left behind."

Well, today, Veterans Day, as we do every year, we take that moment to embrace the gentle heroes of Vietnam and of all our wars. We remember those who were called upon to give all a person can give, and we remember those who were prepared to make that sacrifice if it were demanded of them in the line of duty, though it never was. Most of all, we remember the devotion and gallantry with which all of them ennobled their nation as they became champions of a noble cause.

I'm not speaking provocatively here. Unlike the other wars of this century, of course, there were deep divisions about the wisdom and rightness of the Vietnam war. Both sides spoke with honesty and fervor. And what more can we ask in our democracy? And yet after more than a decade of desperate boat people, after the killing fields of Cambodia, after all that has happened in that unhappy part of the world, who can doubt that the cause for which our men fought was just? It was, after all, however imperfectly pursued, the cause of freedom; and they showed uncommon courage in its service. Perhaps at this late date we can all agree that we've learned one lesson: that young Americans must never again be sent to fight and die unless we are prepared to let them win.

But beyond that, we remember today that all our gentle heroes of Vietnam have given us a lesson in something more: a lesson in living love. Yes, for all of them, those who came back and those who did not, their love for their families lives. Their love for their buddies on the battlefields and friends back home lives. Their love of their country lives.

This memorial has become a monument to that living love. The thousands who come to see the names testify to a love that endures. The messages and mementos they leave speak with a whispering voice that passes gently through the surrounding trees and out across the breast of our peaceful nation. A childhood teddy bear, a photograph of the son or daughter born too late to know his or her father, a battle ribbon, a note—there are so many of these, and all are testimony to our living love for them. And our nation itself is testimony to the love our veterans have had for it and for us. Our liberties, our values, all for which America stands is safe today because brave men and women have been ready to face the fire at freedom's front. And we thank God for them.

Yes, gentle heroes and living love and our memories of a time when we faced great divisions here at home. And yet if this place recalls all this, both sweet and sad, it also reminds us of a great and profound truth about our nation: that from all our divisions we have always eventually emerged strengthened. ...

Iran's Ahmadinejad rejects Western nuclear proposal

TEHRAN (Reuters) - Iran's President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad on Monday rejected a Western proposal for it to "freeze" its nuclear work in return for no new sanctions and ruled out any talks with major powers on the issue...

[Link: www.washingtonpost.com...]

Now, why would they stop?
Obama has made it clear we are not going to do anything if they continue except go to the UN and issue more sternly worded letters.
In addition, Obama has thrown Israel into the mix by linking progress on this issue with creating a terror state Palestinian state on it's border.

A bill approved by the House of Representatives and referred to the Senate would prohibit federal employees of the executive branch from being compelled to release any document unless a court makes a specified determination by a preponderance of evidence – legislation at least one group suspects is designed to protect Barack Obama's elusive birth certificate from release.

The legislation, HR 985, resides in the Senate Judiciary Committee.

Sovereignty Alliance has issued a "red alert" about the bill it calls "stealth legislation ... to protect Obama from providing his birth certificate."

My father was a decorated Naval officer, and a purple heart recipient. He stared down the Kamikaze at both Iwo Jima and Okinawa, and a fistful of other significant engagements in the Pacific. He transported our Marines onto the beaches at Iwo Jima and transported wounded troops back out, under heavy enemy fire. He witnessed many of his friends being crushed, shot, beheaded, incinerated, and blown to bits and he never wavered. He suffered debilitating wartime injuries that later on down the road, cost him his life.

My son and I, and all of my family, are honoring his service and sacrifice today. And also that of my Uncle, who was a Pearl Harbor survivor.

I could continue to beg and plead for civility on this thread but clearly it's going in one eyeball and out the other with some people. It's horribly disrespectful on a day like today and I wish that those of you who are bringing hostility to this thread would go find something else to do.

Actually, Pelosi should do no such thing. She's a member of the House, and foreign policy is well outside her domain. She has no business inserting herself into such matters, and it isn't a precedent I want to see established. Given that the House may well be asked to approve legislation relating to this developing situation, however, she probably ought to be on a homeward bound flight as quickly as possible, while keeping her yap shut about American diplomatic matters.

A much more important question is: where the hell is Clinton? Has she been micro-managed out of existence? Or is she playing political games, risking American safety in order to further her own ambitions by undermining her boss?

Every year on November 11, Canadians pause in a silent moment of remembrance for the men and women who have served, and continue to serve our country during times of war, conflict and peace. We honour those who fought for Canada in the First World War (1914-1918), the Second World War (1939-1945), and the Korean War (1950-1953), as well as those who have served since then. More than 1,500,000 Canadians have served our country in this way, and more than 100,000 have died. They gave their lives and their futures so that we may live in peace.

The tradition of Poppies comes from WW1. Poppies were in bloom during a major battle (Flanders?) and the red petals were recognized as symbolic of the blood shed. Wearing a poppy honors the fallen in the UK and France.

Plastics go in the CMU.
Resulting plastic puck gets heat sealed in vapor barrier bag.
Pucks are retained onboard for up to 30 days for disposal ashore, or sent to an Auxillary if unable to retain onboard.

If equipment is OOC, and prevents proper processing of waste, CASREP is required.

Metal is shredded, and placed in burlap bags for disposal at sea.

Bio (food/paper...etc) is run through the pulper with 100 gpm S/W flush where it is reduced to less then 1/4 inch slurry and discharged over the side.

Side Bar...
It is possible to pulp the entire output from an LHD with Marines for both breakfast and lunch in slightly under 18 minutes with only one person feeding the pulper.
(I won $20.00 on that one during the last Navy Relief fund raiser)
