Memorial Day Technology: Map the Fallen

Technology • Views: 5,040

Here’s a way to commemorate Memorial Day with the technology you’re using right now — your computer. Google engineer Sean Askay has created a “layer” for Google Earth with detailed information about the service members who gave their lives in the Afghanistan and Iraq wars: Map the Fallen.

With Askay’s tool, you can learn about how each service member died, see their pictures and where they came from, and visit memorial websites with comments from friends and family. Here’s his description of the project:

Google Earth has come a long way since late 2005 when I first started using it: a few of these improvements include time animation, “regionation” for efficiently displaying thousands of points on the map, and Touring, which enables you to record your flightpath and narration to guide your audience through your content. I’m sure many of you have heard of Google’s 20% time program, where engineers can work the equivalent of a day a week on a project of their choosing. I decided last year that it was time to revisit my casualties mapping project, and have since spent some of my 20% time (as well as a healthy dose my own personal time) rebuilding the map to use these new features.

For this project I collected information from a number of sources, including the Department of Defense’s Statistical Information Analysis Division, icasualties.org, MilitaryTimes.com’s Honor the Fallen, Washington Post’s Faces of the Fallen, the Iraq and Afghanistan Pages, and Legacy.com. I used the Google Maps and GeoNames.org geocoding services to get coordinates for each person’s home of record and approximate place of death. The map includes data through March 2009. I’d like to point out the incredible time commitment the above organizations invest in maintaining this information; as I’ve learned, it is not an easy task. All of the data I have assembled and generated for this project will be made freely available for download in the near future.

During this project, I have sought the advice and perspectives of several groups directly tied to these losses, including Gold Star families, veterans’ groups, active-duty servicemen and women, and leadership in the United States Army. I’ve done my best to incorporate their feedback and suggestions in creating something that pays tribute to the memory and service of these fallen heroes. Out of respect for the families of those people on this map who have taken their own lives, I have chosen to describe these deaths as coming from “non-combat” related causes.

No matter what you may think about Google, the 20% time program was well used for the fallen hero's map, it's not a walk in the park to study, but it's well worth your time.

This is a very special project. On the day we honor these heroes, it is nice to know that there are many, many people in the this country that still respect and are grateful for the sacrifices made by these brave soldiers.

I'm impressed by the significant effort. Thank you to Google and Sean. Let's hope that this information is NOT used by anti-war groups to promote their agenda in any way, shape, or form.

For the past two years I've been working on the Google Earth Outreach team, aimed at helping non-profits and public benefit groups use Google Earth and Google Maps to further their cause.

I'm also in charge of the Global Awareness layers in Google Earth and helped develop and polish many of those projects, including Crisis in Darfur and Appalachian Mountaintop Removal Coal Mining.

He's upfront about some motives. Kudos for the efforts in memorializing our military service people.

If you have decent computer, it's well worth the effort. I've played with it for many days, and still have not used 10% of it's features. the street view is the most impressive. I can drive down my street, check out my house, or walk another street in a city I've been to, or plan to visit. Don't miss trying the space view and warping around the universe, zooming in and out at light plus speed.

Interesting Vet story.

THIS WAS BACK IN THE DAYS WHEN THERE WAS HONOR IN BEING A WARRIOR ... THEY PROUDLY WORE UNIFORMS, AND THEY DIDN'T HIDE IN AMBUSH INSIDE A MOSQUE, OR BEHIND WOMEN AND CHILDREN, NOR DID THEY USE MENTALLY RETARDED WOMEN AS SUICIDE BOMBERS TO TARGET AND KILL INNOCENT CIVILIANS ... HOW TIMES HAVE CHANGED

I would add, the American left is taking the lead in the utter lack of honor with their "we can justify anything with our hatred".

Those Norks goose-stepping in PyongYang's weapons parades look damn determined to make "mischief," to me.

There is NO EXCUSE for our being caught flat-footed during a nuclear detonation by these goose-steppers, with Pelosi & John F. Kerry in China at this very minute.

Google Earth benefits from both local memory and internet speed. A lot of the data you see on google earth is streaming in from the internet as you use it, so, if you have a slower connection, things will render slower.

And of course, local memory is import and your processor speed.

I've run it on 512mb, but close everything else. Running multiple programs and windows will slow thing to a crawl. Google earth is a resource hog, but really neat.

Thank you Charles for this map. Out of curiousity because I am part Spanish, I checked Spain's fallen for the NATO Afghanistan/Iraq statistics.

I note Spain's fallen are mostly from Spain's Northwest Celtic region of Galicia, which is sparsely populated but a patriotic region that always raised people willing to leave home & travel abroad for the sake of country & beliefs. Galicia is not surprisingly, home to Generalisimo Francisco Franco & and Fidel Castro's ancestors as well as countless emigres to the New World after Columbus' discovery of America.

Few Al Andalusian Spaniards have sacrificed in this fight, though they are the most populous region of Spain. Islam's roots remain in this socialist area.

Sad comment about what Socialist Presidents Felipe Gonzalez's 12 years and current Socialist PRes. Zapatero's leadership has meant for Spaniards' willingness to defend freedom and fight totalitarians.

The technology advances - especially communication - are just amazing to me. When I got my computer sci degree, they'd just gotten rid of card readers. And when I started my job, we communicated via letter or telephone. At one time, I answered all the e-mails via telnet, and most of the e-mailers were crusty old engineers. Now, people send messages to us via Blackberry while they're buying a latte.

Plus - I know people all over the world! It really connects you to things when you know people in Mombasa and Singapore and Scotland and Wales and so on.

What a time to live in.

Hey Charles,
Gotta complain about one little item that has bugged me and you've fallen in with it.
The map, we are told, depicts those who have fallen in the Afghanistan and Iraq "wars."
...with the word "wars" being plural.
We never refered to the European... as opposed to Pacific... "wars" back in WWII. There was only one war.
This is only one war.
Wherever U.S. troops are fighting (and sometimes dying) against the savages trying to kill us all, whether in Pakistan, Yemen, Saudi Arabia, Lebanon, Guantanamo, Iraq or Afghanistan, it's all the same, one war.
Let's remember that whenever we hear about the "wars."
There is no "wars."
There is one war and we're still in it, all over the world.
