Bad Idea of the Day: The Criminals’ Tour De France

Sports • Views: 2,317

Those wacky, irrepressible French! What will they think of next? What could possibly go wrong?

NANTES, France (Reuters) – Close to 200 prisoners will cycle around France next month, watched by scores of guards on bicycles, in the first penal version of the Tour de France, authorities said Monday.

The 196 prisoners will cycle in a pack and breakaway sprints will not be allowed. They will be accompanied by 124 guards and prison sports instructors. There will be no ranking, the idea being to foster values like teamwork and effort.

It’s a kind of escape for us, a chance to break away from the daily reality of prison,” said Daniel, a 48-year-old prisoner in the western city of Nantes, at the official launch of the event. His last name was not given.

“If we behave well, we might be able to get released earlier, on probation,” he told reporters.

The prisoners’ Tour de France will take them 2,300 km (1,400 miles) around the country, starting in the northern city of Lille on June 4 and stopping in 17 towns, each of which has a prison. However, participants will sleep in hotels.

That's nothing. That's not 1/100th the scrutiny that Lance Armstrong gets during a normal Tour.

For One Night, Baghdad Gets a Pink Zone

Change has certainly come to Baghdad. And it appears that includes the U.S. Embassy, where they are holding what the invitation says is the first-ever U.S. Embassy Gay Pride Theme Party next Friday at Baghdaddy's, which is the embassy employee association's pub.

"Come celebrate the start of Summer with color . . . and in costume!" the May 10 invitation says. "Dress in drag or as a gay icon. All are welcome." The invitation was attached to what was called an "All Hands Alerts" e-mail.

An embassy spokesman said by way of explanation: "This is an event organized and sponsored by a group of employees. Given the lack of places to meet in Baghdad, the embassy allows groups to use its social facilities for events on a first-come, first-served basis."

The French as a nation have a long history of insisting on being different and claiming it's a superior practice. A case in point is that at the beginning of the First World War is that while all other nations had adopted earth toned uniforms for their soldiers the French politicians INSISTED that their soldiers go into combat with the traditional dark blue coats and bright red trousers. As you can imagine this didn't work out well for the French Army. The French also had the best bayonets mounted on the worst rifle, but that's another story.

58 ErkWit  Mon, May 25, 2009 3:25:22pm

I really don't give a damn about prisoners being given an opportunity like this as a reward for good behavior or whatnot. The main problem with an event like this is that it costs money and I have a feeling the prisoners aren't spending a dime. If you figure they have to pay extra wages for over a hundred guards and somehow obtain all the necessary equipment, food, and other travel expenses, this is gonna end up being a very expensive event put on for the sole enjoyment of individuals who would not have this opportunity if they had obeyed the law like the rest of us.

But it's France so in the long run I'll concentrate my attention on a rolling doughnut.

I won't. The Chauchat was the worst LMG of WWI and probably all time. The US Army was also stuck with it for a time (The Marines had better sense and went with the Lewis Gun), though by the end of the war the BAR was replacing it.

A serious Memorial Day post, before I head out for the evening:

Up Front, Bill Mauldin. This is a 2000 hardcover reprint, $16.47 on Amazon.
(Use Charles' Amazon link on the Info/Tools menu, if you want to buy it.)

I have the original 1945 edition. Using Amazon's "search inside" tool, this reprint looks like an exact reproduction -- original font and everything.

Mauldin was a cartoonist for Stars & Stripes during WWII. The book covers the Italian and southern France campaigns. His cartoons and commentary give a first-hand, poignant, look at the common soldier's life.

It's a classic.

"The 196 prisoners will cycle in a pack and breakaway sprints will not be allowed."

This reminded me of a scene where Laurel and Hardy are in a military prison, and Ollie stumbles across a tunnel that another prisoner has dug (I think the movie was The Flying Deuces, but it's been a while). Anyhew:

Ollie: A tunnel! This is our chance to escape!
Stan: Oh... [scratching head and blinking] ...are we ALLOWED to do that?
[Ollie smacks him; crying ensues]

The Sentinel's Creed are the 99 words we live by. The words bring vast emotions to the surface when spoken by a Sentinel. We tend to stand a little taller, back a little straighter and our head just a little higher. These words capture the true meaning of why we are Tomb Guards. When ever a Tomb Guard salutes a commissioned officer, they always say in a loud voice:

"Line Six, Sir!"

Line Six of the Creed

Surrounded by well meaning crowds by day,
Alone in the thoughtful peace of night,
This soldier will in honored glory rest
Under my eternal vigilance.

Sentinels Creed

My dedication to this sacred duty
Is total and whole-hearted.
In the responsibility bestowed on me
Never will I falter.
And with dignity and perseverance
My standard will remain perfection.
Through the years of diligence and praise
And the discomfort of the elements,
I will walk my tour in humble reverence
To the best of my ability.
It is he who commands the respect I protect,
His bravery that made us so proud.
Surrounded by well meaning crowds by day,
Alone in the thoughtful peace of night,
This soldier will in honored glory rest
Under my eternal vigilance.

So the Governor has to slash budgets and cut jobs, then US fed tax receipts from all US taxpayers are redirected to "needy?" areas? Isn't this basically robbing Peter to pay Paul. Reparations to the Democrats and their friends while they wreck the rest of the economy? The stimulus package is a recipe for a disaster if this is how it goes down. It's basically an inside fire sale. A ponzi scheme.

It's like living on a budget at home and suddenly losing your job and saying lets have one big last splurge and go to disneyland before we go broke. We can worry about paying for it later. We will end up with the Chinese land purchase of 2012. Where everything West of the Mississippi becomes property of China.

Here's some insanity from San Diego...

...A San Diego pastor and his wife claim they were interrogated by a county official and warned they will face escalating fines if they continue to hold Bible studies in their home. The couple, whose names are being withheld until a demand letter can be filed on their behalf, told their attorney a county government employee knocked on their door on Good Friday, asking a litany of questions about their Tuesday night Bible studies, which are attended by approximately 15 people.

“’Do you have a regular weekly meeting in your home? Do you sing? Do you say “amen”?’ the official reportedly asked. ‘Do you say, “Praise the Lord”?’ The pastor’s wife answered yes. She says she was then told, however, that she must stop holding ‘religious assemblies’ until she and her husband obtain a Major Use Permit from the county, a permit that often involves traffic and environmental studies, compliance with parking and sidewalk regulations and costs that top tens of thousands of dollars. And if they fail to pay for the MUP, the county official reportedly warned, the couple will be charged escalating fines beginning at $100, then $200, $500, $1000, ‘and then it will get ugly’.

Calf in Colorado born with 7 legs, 2 spines

STEAMBOAT SPRINGS, Colo. - It's an unlucky No. 7 for a calf born with a few extra legs in Colorado.

The Steamboat Pilot & Today of Steamboat Springs reports that a veterinary hospital helped deliver a seven-legged calf Thursday.

The staff at the Steamboat Veterinary Hospital said the Black Angus calf, which was delivered by cesarean section, had two spines but one head. One leg also had two hooves.

The calf lived for only about 10 minutes.

If the man is so disgusted with his films, why make 'em?

Sam Raimi insists film world is not glamorous

Sam Raimi is disgusted by his films.

The movie director—whose latest horror film "Drag Me to Hell" stars Alison Lohman, Lorna Raver and Justin Long—is appalled by the extreme effects needed to keep the audience entertained these days.

He said: “Alison Lohman swallowed a lot of fluids on this movie. It’s disgusting what the audience wants nowadays. It’s really sad. I am ashamed and embarrassed by the crowd these days.”

The 49-year-old director—who is also behind the ‘Spider-Man’ trilogy—insists that nothing about the film industry is glamorous.

MORE KIDS FOR ‘MULLAH LIGHT’

MAD mullah Omar Bakri Mohammed has gone on a crash diet so he can breed more “jihadi” recruits.

The amorous cleric is planning a “summer of loving” with his second wife, Lebanese beauty Ruba, in a bid to get her pregnant.

And Bakri, left, has slimmed down from 20st to 13st to improve his chances of becoming a dad again.

Speaking exclusively to the Daily Star Sunday, he said: “Inshallah (God willing), I will have more children.

“My wife is still young and we would like to start a family together.”

The 50-year-old father-of-six is now shacked up with Ruba, 26, and his ten-year-old son Bilal in his new bolthole in the northern Lebanese city of Tripoli.

But he added: “Unlike what you might have read my second wife is not a model.

“She wears a niqab and a burkha – she covers her face. My first wife never did that. Life in Lebanon is good for me. I have everything I need – my wife, my supporters and the freedom to spread Islam.”

Bakri shocked his supporters when he dumped his first wife Hanah, 48, the mother of his six children, last year.

New wife Ruba is a year younger than his daughter Yasmin Fostok, 27, who outraged her family last year when she was exposed for having a £4,000 boob job and for working as a pole dancer.

A pal said: “His dream is to produce more children, all committed to following his jihadi cause.”

...He was exiled to Lebanon in 2006 after costing British taxpayers £300,000 while he raised his family here on hand-outs.

Last month, the Daily Star Sunday revealed Bakri spent thousands of pounds of taxpayers’ cash setting himself up in a luxury Lebanese apartment when he fled the UK in 2006.

Not so sure about that. An "Independent" "Nuclear" Japan would give China Nightmares.

Why? It's not like China isn't targeted by US nukes 24/7 anyway. And like I said, they know Japan wouldn't so anything without the US's approval

Even IF Japan had a few nukes they'd be aimed at North Korea, not China

Japan probably has the technology to build a bomb within a year or so. However, I don't think they're motivated to do it, as long as they are protected by the US nuclear umbrella.

They probably have the "pieces" already and could assemble one in hours or days. And if they feel the US will not or can not defend them, then all bets are off.

re: #212 hazzyday

First off, those are old news stories to which you are linking. The budget compromise of Feb changed the deficit number.... but as I've mentioned before, the actual number depends upon the tax receipts, and those aren't known in fact until they actually come in. Current estimates are that the state will start bouncing checks sometime in June if something more isn't done.

Secondly, on the whining about what California gets from the Feds... like so much of the hyperventilating about California, facts are overlooked. Indeed, look at the $21billion in your second link - that is $21 out of > $800 billion, or about 1/40th of the amount. However, California has over 10% of the population. Now you tell me, who's getting the good deal?

As for the textbook discussion to which you linked... heh... what can I say. As for discussions about abuse, such as child or spousal, I do think they are important to have, but really don't belong in a Civics course. It seems to me the abuse topics should be covered in special PhysEd classes, especially along with ones covering sex ed. As for the other topics... they all seem like what were covered (back when I was in college) as "contemporary issues" in basic sociology courses.

Many Americans today have a poor grasp of governance and our history of such. According to your link, that is going to get worse.

372 A Kiwi Infidel  Mon, May 25, 2009 5:04:07pm

OT but this caught my eye, from Karl Du Fresne an journo from Wellington.

So award-winning Pakistani author Mohammed Hanif was indignant at being detained for three hours by "racist" immigration officers at Auckland airport.

Diddums, as former prime minister Helen Clark might have said.

Everyone who travels is inconvenienced to some extent by the stringent security checks made necessary by terrorism.

What Hanif experienced was merely an extra degree of the delay and indignity experienced by anyone who flies, including flustered mothers with tired children, whose teddy bears are highly unlikely to conceal plastic explosives.

Hanif needs reminding that all this security rigmarole would be unnecessary if it weren't for murderous Muslim fanatics. Many of them come from his home country, which makes it inevitable that immigration officers are going to pay particular attention to someone travelling on a Pakistani passport.

Rather than venting his spleen on immigration officers, who apparently compounded the offence to Hanif's precious ego by not knowing he was here for Auckland's Readers and Writers Festival (I wonder if he uttered the immortal line, "Don't you know who I am?"), he should direct his resentment where it belongs: at those of his fellow Muslims who insist on making targets of innocent people

At least he doesnt mind calling a spade a spade, excuse the pun.

Well, I've enjoyed lurking, but my daughter is signaling me that she wants the computer. She does this by sitting at the piano, four feet away, and playing LOUD.

I can't exactly tell her to stop practicing, can I?

I get revenge by waiting until she's on computer, and then telling her younger brother to practice. Not as loud, but a lot more painful.

re: #321 freetoken

My point would be that these problems are all accounting smoke and mirrors. Panic generated spending.
