Another issue raised repeatedly. The problem is, while you can do a ponderous TV show to save money and consider the deep ideas and issues of the day, the movie public today is far too used to Indiana Jones, James Bond, and a host of other action flicks. In the end, you have to create a sale-able product. You have to turn a profit.

See, I haven't gotten into BSG, although my husband watched it online. I can't help but think back to BSG in the 70's and the hokiness level gets to me.
But note: it's a TV show. You've got just a one-hour format (actually more like 44 minutes) where the producers don't mind if you save money so they can spend it on a bigger season ender. With movies, you don't have as many options.

Indeed.
For the sake of Armstrong’s research, the bigger the outbreak the better. What was needed was parrot-fever panic. A team of public-health officials set about tracking down purchasers of recently imported parrots. Apparent cases of psittacosis cropped up in Providence, Chicago, New Haven, and Los Angeles. The nationwide sweep soon supplied Armstrong with enough samples to begin his work, which was conducted in two basement rooms of the Hygienic Laboratory with his technician, Henry (Shorty) Anderson. Writer notes that the disease had been already been identified in the nineteenth century. Describes how, two weeks after the story broke, it became a national joke. A pro-parrot lobby was formed [...]

I have repeatedly offered to take my bailout in automatic weapons and gold bouillion. I'll do the same with any "stimulus" money or other wealth they want to spread my way. That should make things easier on the Obama Administration, as those aren't things that can "print" money.
There's too much of that going on as we speak.

The strength in TOS wasn't continuity, but the great self-contained didactic stories. Not exactly on the level of Rod Serling, but at times they came close.

It took me over a year to get into the modern BSG, and Bear McCreary's music helped me do it. It's FANTASTIC. Get the Season 1 Soundtrack, followed by the Miniseries Soundtrack, which Bear assisted Richard Gibbs (from Oingo Boingo fame!) before turning over the reins.
At that point, you WILL be hooked and you WILL be asking for your next dose of chamalla.

Is anyone following the story of that bomb that went off outside of a Starbucks early this morning? Some damage to the store, but no injuries, because of the early hour. They don't know who did it yet. There seem to be some indications that it was amateurs:
Authorities say the container was white plastic wrapped in black tape. The explosive material was the same type used in M80 fireworks, and they say there was enough to fill several M80s. The device was rigged with a hobby fuse, like used in a firecracker.Several people claim to have seen teenagers in the area of the explosion, but nobody saw them actually place the device. One resident who lives above the Starbucks says he saw two boys he described as between 13 and 16 running from the scene just seconds before the explosion.
And because no story today would be complete without some freak's opinion on it, here's the first comment after the WABC story:
Most of the people who know how to make bombs are, or were, in the military. Let's bring real peace to the world and remove the need for bombs whether real or false flag. Audit the fed

Hello, everyone!
The 2009 Bolder Boulder went great! The weather held until the very last moment - then the bottom fell out and we got soaked! (When we arrived at our meeting place I said "We came! We saw! We almost drowned!")
The Congenital Heart Defect group I support put 24 participants in the race. Nine of them have defective hearts and have had a total of 16 heart operations. All nine walked the entire route (10K, or 6.2 miles)
One of the walkers was a 60+ year old woman who had her first heart operation in the late 1940's. (Modern heart surgery was born on November 29, 1944). The healthy walkers were mainly moms and dads, but also a few friends: People who have seen their friend struggle with a heart defect and said "No more!"
When you pick up the newspaper, you'll read that two Ethiopian runners "won" the Bolder Boulder. I think they just happened to finish first. I personally know the real winners!

OT: So far, I like Hannity's show tonight. He's giving the GOP's proposals a good airing, which they badly need. He's giving the brand the positive exposure it needs.
I think Mr. Hannity is a good talker, but he needs someone to point him in the right direction. He just gets stuck on stuff sometimes and just repeats it and repeats it, which is annoying. He is not exactly a deep thinker, so he kind of bores me, I'm afraid, and a lot of his points can get stale. I haven't watched him since Skeletor left, but I suspect he's better with a foil than solo.
I hardly ever turn on the TV, but I do like Neil Cavuto and Greta. They are both sharp as tacks. I like the weekend guys, where they have give and take from different sides - I especially like Juan Williams, who I think is sharp and thoughtful.

He needs to realize what's at stake but, getting drunk and dancing with another woman does not mean he's cheated.
I've been drunk and danced and flirted with women many times in public, but did not end up in bed with anyone.

I don't really follow celebrity "news". I'll click around to see some fashion, but that's about it. So I get pissed when I keep seeing these reality show nobodies in the entertainment section, ruining my fashion slideshow. I keep thinking, "who the hell are these people?"
That's the price I pay, I guess, for keeping the idiot box off. It's worth it.
I just read in the paper today that Americans of all age groups watches an average of five hours of teevee a day.
I got a digital converter for Christmas. Haven't even opened the box yet.
The tube hasn't been on for over a year now. And I watch DVDs at the computer, so I can pause and surf when I get the urge.
The money I almost blew on an impulse when I saw a flat-screen teevee at a pawn shop went to the Kindle.
The network and cable guys hate people like us. In fact, Comcast, my ISP, signed me up for cable teevee last year without my knowing it. On the sly. Just started charging me an extra $50 a month on my automatic bill. They had to refund me $350 when I caught on.
(The networks probably have their reprogramming SWAT teams locking on to our positions as we type...)

I gotta bitch to someone, and the Girlfriend is asleep. I found this on EBay. It is a really nice tanto knife, and it is out of production. This is the first one I've seen since I started looking for them. I might could get it for under $200, and there's the rub. I already bought something nice in this general vein over the weekend, and I promised her that it would be the last thing for a while. I never exactly expected this to pop up.
I'm not going to bid on it, just whine. I've got an Al MAr Backup that is nearly as nice, and ably fills the niche of legal fixed blade carry (at least in my State). Still, the Spyderco is really, really nice.
Upper limit in price. Seen them selling for around 150 at shows . Not very often but still if your going to get one, then why not.

On another board (yep, sorry, I'm seeing another forum behind your backs!), I've already run across the creationist/ID talking points on Ida:
Facts to remember about "Ida."
• The well-preserved fossil (95 percent complete, including fossilized fur and more) is about the size of a raccoon and includes a long tail. It resembles the skeleton of a lemur (a small, tailed, tree-climbing primate). The fossil does not resemble a human skeleton.
• The fossil was found in two parts by amateur fossil hunters in 1983. It eventually made its way through fossil dealers to the research team.
• Ida has opposable thumbs, which the ABC News article states are “similar to humans’ and unlike those found on other modern mammals” (i.e., implying that opposable thumbs are evidence of evolution). Yet lemurs today have opposable thumbs (like all primates). Likewise, Ida has nails, as do other primates. And the talus bone is described as “the same shape as in humans,” despite the fact that there are other differences in the ankle structure.
• Unlike today’s lemurs (as far as scientists know), Ida lacks the “grooming claw” and a “toothcomb” (a fused row of teeth) In fact, its teeth are more similar to a monkey’s. These are minor differences easily explained by variation within a kind.
Besides which, losing the "grooming claw" is a loss of information, not a gain which would be required for evolution to be proven.
...and...
Too bad this "missing link" is imaginary.
Evolutionary scientists have a nagging ability to find exactly what they want to find if they look hard enough.
Some extinct variation of lemur is unearthed in a bunch of oil shale -- which wasn't carbon dated, I wonder why -- and even scientists admit in their own research that they're not fully certain about their conclusions, but ...
... the media trumpet from the hills that the "missing link" has been found and that evolution of human beings from apelike creatures is a dead-certain fact.
It is a tissue of lies.

239 | shiplord kirel Mon, May 25, 2009 7:37:42pm |
Speaking of dysfunctional families, I was at my mother's house this evening, something of a rarity for reasons that will be obvious.
The occasion was my brother D's arrival from Colorado with his new girlfriend in tow. "D" is really the only normal and emotionally healthy person in the whole clan besides my humble self (if I may presume to count myself as such). His new girlfriend is a very attractive and well-educated woman in her 40s.
My mother was her usual charming octogenarian southern belle self for a while, then she started to reminisce about what it was like when my brothers and I were growing up. She spoke almost nostalgically of the time when my brother Judas (as he is now known) became smitten with a girl when they were both just 15, and how she, mom, eventually had to put an end to it. Then she added, "I never had much trouble like that with him afterward." There was the little business of Judas running away with my wife (aka Jezebel) some 8 years later, and all that followed including a federal court case, but mom apparently does not count that as trouble. Mom went on to describe what a wonderful time she had at Judas and Jezebel's house during her visit there last year.
D's girlfriend, who apparently knows the whole story, was looking increasingly uncomfortable and even horrified through this, since my mom was talking up the traitor right in front of me like I wasn't there or, worse, like it was no big deal to me. Mom seemed completely oblivious to this reaction.
A little later, mom mentioned my army service in passing, but could not remember what rank I had held. She never alluded to me having been mayor, but she did brag a great deal about Judas's new barbecue grill and his status as a deacon of a creepy little church.
My mom is utterly, sublimely unaware that people outside the family are not at all impressed when she belittles me in front of them. I just let her run on, since I thought D's girlfriend is entitled to know the whole truth about this bizarre family and its inverted values. Most of the relatives on my mom's side are like that about it. To them, I swear, I am the one who should be ashamed of the Judas/Jezebel case, not those world-class hypocrites themselves. It is like being the normal chick in the Addam's family, with "D" and his children as my only blood relations with the real world.
Well, I am not just a grown man, but an old man, so I am well able to understand that this is the family's problem and not mine, but I still feel cheated by kinship with a group of people who are far inferior to virtually any caveman or savage in terms of sensitivity and their moral obligation to their own flesh and blood.

I'm on the West Coast, they're showing some Sasquatch crap now.I've spent practically my whole life in the wilderness, along with many others, and nary a sign of such thing. I'd like to hear what one of our trained biologists would say about how many of such creatures it would take to maintain and sustain a genetically diverse population. Our local Natives like to pull the chain of outsiders and play on their credulity. An employer I had of an Indian owned business ran a river fishing guide service on the side.He had a party of city people, mostly from the legal profession on one trip. He spied a big pile of bear crap, threw some toilet paper on it, and then went back and steered the party past it, saying he'd just taken a dump and didn't feel good, moaning and holding his stomach. His party freaked out when they saw the huge pile and wanted to get him to a doctor right away. He still laughs about it.

Ida (47myo) progresses in a sort of continuum through lemurs and all modern monkeys. The wonder is that she also spun off ape-like animals that at first were quadrupedal but eventually evolved to Lucy (3.2 myo, with a human-like skeleton) and beyond. This discovery is equivalent to or greater than the first moon landing IMHO - if science is about understanding our place in the universe, and I think it is.

BTW, the Ida show on History channel started at 9 PM EST, not 10 as I first posted. those of you west of me, don't miss it, it's a great show and 2 hours long.

She's the oldest (and most complete) fossil of a primate ever discovered. She clearly belongs in the line of primates that resulted in our more recent ancestors. Even if the creationists want to deny her importance to evolution, her very discovery is still remarkable simply because of the existing circumstances surrounding the fossilization process. It's why we have so few fossils of primates to begin with- conditions have to be just right.
What's sad is this little girl had injuries to her arms, which may have led her to falling into the lake that preserved her. Well- sad and fortunate at the same time, I guess. Were it not for her injured arms, we might not have her fossil at all.

Dang I forgot all about it. I found this weird lump thing in my back yard while mowing. Turns out it's a fossil and I've been poking around trying to figure out what it is.
Any experts in carboniferous marine fossils out there?
I've got something big that looks like a coral crusted large tooth, but that doesn't really fit (it's not shark, just the wrong shape, being too curved over and not symetrically spade shaped...) So I'm thinking maybe it's not a tooth, but a rugose that got other-coral encrusted. I'm trying to get some good pics but they aren't turning out so hot.
This is from Kansas, and probably Mississippian, but I"m no expert, I'm wild-assed guessing.

Many thanks folks. Sometimes I am a little unsure about unburdening myself on Charles's bandwidth, but I think it does serve a useful purpose in terms of disclosure, letting readers know just where my drive comes from.
More importantly, it lets others with screwball families know that they are not alone and that such things are not at all insurmountable.
One of the relatives compared me to Captain Ahab of Moby Dick fame for my relentless and only partially successful campaign to reclaim my daughter from Judas and Jezebel's brainwashing. I took this as a compliment, since I actually admire Ahab for his single-mindedness, if not his choice of cause, especially as portrayed by Gregory Peck in the 1956 movie. The irony of this analogy, of course, is that the biblical King Ahab was the husband of the notorious adulteress Jezebel. I don't think the relative who made the comparison was aware of this.

Well, the basic idea is that the mapping the fallen project is insulting to our fallen heroes, because it reduces them to mere points on a map. At least, that's what I'm hearing. If I may quote from the stalker site (I won't link, Charles, I promise):
SOmeone pinpoints who our dead are on a map and LGF thinks it is great? Google sucks. Google Earth sucks. Our men and women are worth more than a blip on the damn radar! I quit!...
I just got home and saw a 1.0 post about someone pinpointing US deaths on a map. the 1.0ers thought it was so great. My GOD! Is that all they are? I am livid. I apologize if I am not being clear about this, but really, how lame is that?

There's nothing wrong at all with "Mapping the Fallen." It's a wonderful heartfelt tribute to the men and women of the military who gave their lives to protect America, and it was done with a lot of sensitivity and the approval of families and friends.

Great site you have, gmsc.

re: #350 Occasional Reader
I think if the source of the problem is the game itself, it would probably be due to the nonstop play. No timeouts, very few substitutions, it just keeps going for 45 minutes straight. A really good game the action just builds and builds. I think that has something to do with the passion from the crowds.

There's nothing wrong at all with "Mapping the Fallen." It's a wonderful heartfelt tribute to the men and women of the military who gave their lives to protect America, and it was done with a lot of sensitivity and the approval of families and friends.
That's certainly how I saw it. Quite the opposite of reducing our lost servicemembers to data points, I thought it made them human. It connected each one with a photograph, and a place where he or she lived, where hearts are still filled with love, with loss. Scrolling around the map started to give some scope to the sadness, finding little town after little town where there's a hole in someone's life because of someone else's sacrifice. And as you travel more and more across our country, you come upon more and more lives that were given in its defense. And as I widened the time range to show more and more of the fallen, the yellow arcs across the planet grew and grew, until they were just a big solid band, like a fabric, each strand of which was dedicated to a whole human being, whose picture you have just seen, whose town you have just explored. Really moving, I thought. A very evocative way to communicate the scale of the sacrifice.
At least that's how I saw it. But I guess if one's main hobby is finding ways to hate you, Charles, then one can find a reason to do that in just about anything.

A very eloquent description of what I think the programmer intended to convey. I bet the person that was so offended did not bother to spend a few minutes exploring the map, if they even downloaded it.

Evening Last Mohican - I saw it the same way, but I guess weirdos like the Phelps clan and, ah, others can use that for some nefarious or obscene purpose. I mean they make up shit to hate Charles about, don't go looking for rationality about people hating Charles.

OK. This thread has how many topics? Memorial day celebrations, Ida, Japanese steel sharp things, various pics, sports, bikes, pets, the awesomeness of cats, carbon dating, octal, hexadecimal, the fact that I am a brainiac (hee hee), and lots more.
I took a short trip to camp swampy this eve. They are talking about - this place! They mentioned Charles' pic and made fun of it, talked at length about how much they totally hate our own Sharmuta, and actually quoted my remark where I tried to say something nice about Chen but may have possibly called the rest of them psycho, and etc., etc., etc. And major projection. No matter the topic - the threads are all all all about this place. It is freaking strange.
I realize I am talking about them talking about us, which sounds very teen clique gossip, so I will stop now.

Anyone who takes offense at that has a big hole in their soul, and it's not surprising to find them at a site full of evil psychos.
I found my hometown and read about each of the four men from there on the map. The tributes on their memorial pages got to me. I am positive lots of other people felt that way. Each time someone reads, looks, and feels, it is a memorial - kind of an offering or prayer - for those people who died for us. In an electronic age, when lots of people may not go to the cemetery to decorate a grave, many will make an offering this way, and I think that is just awesome. That Google and the engineer did this really impressed me.
To me, Google, in doing this, is like a young fellow who is a bit callow and who suddenly does something very grown up and nice.

Charles you can't take pictures of handlebars! That's against the roolz of ART! Photography is about pointing a camera in the general direction of 'nice stuff' and only clicking the button when you are certain the resulting image will have no compositional merits and no conceivable point or idea behind it whatsoever. See the cesspit for more...:D
