One of the ringleaders of the Hamas-linked Muslim “charity” called the Holy Land Foundation has been sentenced to 65 years in prison.

DALLAS (AP) — A founding member of what was once the nation’s largest Muslim charity was sentenced to 65 years in prison Wednesday for funneling millions of dollars to the Palestinian militant group Hamas.

Shukri Abu Baker, 50, of Garland, Texas, was the first of five members of the Holy Land Foundation for Relief and Development to be sentenced. Mohammad El-Mezain, 55, was later sentenced to 180 months for one count of conspiracy to support a terrorist organization.

Here's another heapin' helping, scooped from the cesspool: Robert Dreyfuss in "The Nation":

Despite the pompous statements from Mayor Bloomberg of New York and other politicians, including Representative Peter King, the whole story is bogus...

It is disgusting and outrageous that the FBI is sending provocateurs into mosques.

The headlines reinforce the very fear that Dick Cheney is trying to stir up. The story strengthens the narrative that the "homeland" is under attack. It's not. As I've written repeatedly, since 9/11 not a single American has even been punched in the nose by an angry Muslim, as far as I can tell.

LOL! I'm not a lawyer, but were I a judge, sitting on the bench, and a lawyer's case was "Your honor, it's clear that my clients are bozos", I'd probably be unable to refrain from responding:

"Counselor, since you're an officer of the court, I'll take your word for it. And, it appears the evidence supports your thesis."

It may take a few days for CAIR to post a comment. After the Mumbai massacre it took a few days until CAIR condemned those who killed Muslims and Christians in the terror attacks. No mention of Jews.

But I'm guessing that when CAIR posts on this they'll call the guy "a legitimate businessman" who suffered because of the government inordinate and senseless fear of Muslims.

80 pink freud  Wed, May 27, 2009 12:30:38pm

A bit OT:

"the myth of the white muslim's burden"

The reason I don't like discussions about the situation of white Muslims as a community, or the power relationships between white converts and their birth culture (ie, the loss or retention of white privilege), is because I do not believe there is any such thing as a white Muslim community. There is only a white Muslim here, a white Muslim there. The very fact that we have chosen to be part of this religion means that our experiences are radically divergent from the majority of other white westerners. What those experiences were differs quite a bit from convert to convert. Some people were unhappy with the status quo and saw Islam as a purer, more moral way of living. Some married in. Some had spiritual epiphanies. Some started out in other Abrahamic faiths but felt there was something missing. The differences don't stop there: we're from different classes, different parts of the West, different cultural backgrounds. In other words, despite the fact that we try and try to build a single narrative for ourselves, we have very little in common.

We are not a community. We are statistical outliers. A tiny minority in a religion that is overwhelmingly non-white and overwhelmingly non-western. So why do we keep trying to build a narrative about white Muslims? Why so much attention to what we do or do not represent?

The National Association of Muslim American Women (NAMAW) has charged the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) with entrapping four New York City Muslims arrested for planning to bomb a synagogue.

NAMAW appealed to the Justice Department to investigate the case, accusing the FBI of plotting to entrap the cell as part of a campaign against Muslims. It said that the FBI is “creating the illusion that all Muslims are either terrorists or potential terrorists, thereby substantiating the use of racial and religious profiling on Muslims and Arabs.

The Muslim women’s group, which previously has asked for a probe of Jewish lobby groups for allegedly spreading hate messages, claimed that one of those arrested has been diagnosed with paranoid schizophrenia. They also charged that the FBI informant “persuaded these men into believing that their religion obligated them to carry out acts of violence in the United States in retaliation for U.S. war crimes being carried out in the Muslim world.'

Terence Kindlon, a lawyer who defended the last terror suspect to be tried in New York State, told the Times of London, “It is almost as if the FBI cooked up the plot and found four idiots to install as defendants.”

re: #64 opnion

Ok, if I have this right, these guys were carrer criminals before their conversion. Therefore their latest crime on behalf of Islam had nothing to do with Islam. That about it?

The HuffPo "argument":

1. They were already criminals before converting to Islam, so you can't blame their wanting to do bad stuff on Islam.

2. They were stupid. They had low IQs. So they can't be international terrorist masterminds. [I don't know who the hell suggested that they were, or how this is in any way relevant]

3. They thought that killing Jews and shooting down a plane was doing Allah's work, but they were wrong, and they don't really understand Islam. They even ate pork! [This is a perfect invocation of the "No True Scotsman" fallacy.]

4. Various American Muslims condemned their plot. Therefore, you can't blame Islam. [Again, "No True Scotsman." And again, a gigantically stupid thing to say.]

5. They weren't going to do anything bad until the FBI informant said they could get money for blowing stuff up and killing people. So it's all the FBI's fault.

OT, but this is absolutely disgusting:

Supervisor Asks Woman To Take Down American Flag

From the article:

McLucas said the supervisor who complained has been in the United States for 14 years and is formerly from Africa. McLucas said that supervisor took down the flag herself.

So, there was (it says) a complaint. Further, the article states:

But McLucas also said hospital higher-ups had told her some patients' families and visitors had also complained.

But after the story made the news, and people began to comment:

Then, late Wednesday morning, Kindred posted on its website a statement about the incident. It reads, in part: "The disagreement was over the size of the flag and not what it symbolized. We have invited the employee to put the flag back up."

Excuse my language, but Bullshit! I absolutely despise people who can't just say "We blew it." (From my Navy days where the only acceptable response was "No excuse, sir.") The whole reason for taking it down was as a result of complaints, and when the story went public, this representative tries to candy coat it with total crap.

Shame on them.

152 kulhwch  Wed, May 27, 2009 12:47:16pm

Sorry for the OT, but ...

Okay, I've stepped in it now.

At another social site (think facebook, think myspace) I managed to connect with about 8 or so friends that I hadn't spoken to or seen in what must be ten years.  We were always a tight group, and enjoyed each other's company, but when changes involving a divorce and moving, etc., I've managed to lose touch with them and visa versa.  So we're getting reacquainted, etc., and I (last week) forgetfully drop the bomb: I'm now a Republican.

They, apparently, all remained Democrats.  And now there's blood in the water, metaphorically speaking.  Some intense conversations (mostly involving "that bastard W" and so on) over the last week or so, and while I'm managing to hold my own, mostly, I am starting to sink under the waves.

I need suggestions for sites/blogs/whatever that the moonbat talking points about Bush, the war, etc., laid out, and the correct responses.  Scratch that, I know the responses, but I need to lay my hands on facts (dates/names/etc.), often at a moment's notice.  I've gleaned what I can here, and I've Googled until my eyes cross, but I'm still just a few steps ahead of the snapping teeth.  Again, metaphorically.

To say that I was surprized by this is an understatement.  I presumed that if I respected their beliefs and made no sudden moves that I might be able to get past this with them.  Everyone was going to respect everyone else.  Ha.

I'd never seen them feed on their own like this (I used to be one of them, after all), and I was unprepared for this.  It's seeming to be a given that I'm going to have to toss a bunch of these friendships into the high weeds (maybe all of them) and retreat to safer waters.

}:p     [So what sites would you recommend?  And in advance: thanks!]

Also, spaceships don't make noise and explode when shot in space. So Star Wars was bullshit! :)

Actually if you have a microphone close enough to the exploding spacecraft, while you film the destruction, the release of atmosphere would create a bubble lasting long enough to record the sound of the explosion.

Read that somewhere. Some NASA nerd did some theoretical calculations to prove or disprove sound in space and came up with that.

The only thing that works with people like this is to capitulate and ingratiate yourself to them to stay in their good graces. The conflict will ratchet up quite quickly. Nothing you say do they want to hear. This liberal tolerance is really a misnomer for "it's my way or the highway". Take the highway.

I think that cuts both ways. My bottom line is that once you start subscribing too much to any political "ism" you have lost touch with reality.

RON PAUL!

See what I mean?

It is probably best to be the sort who asks questions like:

"What is the moral thing to do?"
"Is this true?"
"What works?"
"What is the long term consequence?"

We have far too few who think that way - on both sides - largely because thinking that way means first acknowledging that "isms" that make everything so simple and easy, actually don't have all the answers.

re: #152 kulhwch

Ask them what they think about all the mass graves in Iraq including the one where 75 children were buried alive without any bullet wounds? Ask them if they would consider waterboarding if the terrorists had planned dozens of attacks on schools: playgrounds, buses, and classrooms? or would they risk another Beslan? Ask if they are interested in articles on the new Saddam Torture museum? I'm looking for the link to the child story, but here's another good link:

I thought it was an Isetta (pronounced EYE-zetta).

Isettas were built by a number of companies under license from Iso. BMW was one of those that did so. BMW also modified the design for their engines, and lengthened it for the BMW 600, basically a four seat Isetta. Steve Urkel's car was one of the BMW Isettas.

That's a tough call for me... Do I prefer the grand story arch of the Shadow war with all of it's mysticism and space opera of season three, or do I prefer the gritty and painful liberation of Earth from season four? As for BSG, that nihilistic ending turned me off to anything in the future from "the creators of Battlestar Oh Frak it, let's just die off"

Much like in the case of B5, the last parts of BSG suffered from a lot of behind the scenes studio shenanigans that were not what the producers or writers wanted.

I have a dream that we lock the BSG guys in a room with JMS, Jos Wheadon and Harlan Ellison, give them a fifty million dollar budget and say "Make the greatest sci fi ever, or be forced to watch every evil twin, possession, or Dianna's mother episode from Next Generation in Clockwork Orange fashion until you comply."

This quote from CAIR should clear the air.

"The Islamic teachings call for the right to free worship," said Munira Syeda, a spokeswoman for the Los Angeles chapter of CAIR. "A verse in the Quran states, ‘There's no compulsion in religion,’ and highlights the spirit of tolerance in Islam."

See, it's not the religion that is responsible it must be the individual. Islam, as everyone knows is a religion of tolerance/ (maybe they should pass that message amongst themselves, for the Koran does mention tolerance of religion as well as intolerance of other religions/infidels). Anyway, I digress, IMO CAIR will not comment on this without a spin because it is a direct link to terrorism/extremism in that faith. Not the publicity that they are hoping for.

re: #283 Kragar (proud to be kafir)

Wrath of Khan

Wrath of Kahn is an awesome movie. It is largely because of it that I can not dismiss the Star Trek franchise.

My biggest beef with Star trek are the following things...

So, you have the big evil, I will eat your face bad guy space cruiser. It is going to destroy the earth or turn every girl scout into a smore or whatever. It is real important that you take it out. You discover that you can beam aboard her.

As captain you:

a) Beam over two guys, armed with side arms, the captain and the first officer.
b) Beam over a company of angry space marines.
c) Say F* it and beam over a nuke

OR For Next Gen and later,

The Enterprise goes somewhere and starts getting it's ass kicked. After Picard determines that having the StarFleet attorney pen a "strongly written letter" is not going to get the baddies to mellow out, the Enterprise gets chewed on for another twenty minutes. With two minutes left, Mr. Data says something like,

"Captain, if I were to invert the polarity of the phase warp coil injectors, I could create a neutrino pulse that would cause the enemy to just disappear. "

"Great Idea Mr. Data, make it so!"

and he does, and they do... and any number of other oops we are out of time, deus ex machina endings...

Finally, Klingons should not be cuddly.

Cordwainer Bird was Harlan's way of flipping the bird to the producers.
Cordwainer Smith wrote some really amazing and poetic science fiction in the late 50s-early 60's, IIRC. Absolutely fantastic.

Some of my best friends are very liberal, and we get along fine. We just pretty much agreed a long time ago to stop discussing politics when we get together.

i only have a few libs left as real friends. they were grandfathered in or they would not qualify now. the whole not talking abt. taboo subjects, like politics/philosophy is very much a burden as there are so many times when the elephant in the room trumpets loudly and will not be ignored.
and i can't mix my two different groups of friends. i've tried.
usually it's a lib who gets obnoxious w/ a statement and then a conservative schools them. it just doesn't work to mix the ideologies and have to see the long sour faces.
so i separate the groups.
believe me the conservative gatherings are way more lively, fun and meaningful. and we can talk abt. anything.

Yeah, Heinlien wrote one of the best books about the philosophy of a military ever written. Verhoven had to turn it into something mocking the very things the book was arguing for.

That and,

You have a planet full of bugs, who no longer fly in space ships or use rifles. They are big and mean though. After parking your fleet in high orbit, you:

a) Send down thousands of lightly armored, lightly armed infantry without air support...

b) Send down air support a little for crying out loud...

c) "Nuke 'em from orbit, it's the only way to be sure" which IMHO is the best quote from any SF movie.

Gotta love the old "reverse the polarity" trick that was used countless times throughout the series. Nothing like being able to turn your hand-held calculator into a self-aware supercomputer by putting the batteries in backwards.

It does beg the question, though: why hasn't some uber-dweeb back at Star Fleet Engineering gotten a jump on things by just doing this reversal up front? Swap two cables, and you've got enough juice on hand to vaporize a whole star system.

Okay... but what about the Doppler "whoosh" sound you hear as you steer your starship past a planet? That's realistic, right?

/

Oh puhleeze! Everybody knows that starships cannot cruise past planets. For local travel inside a planetary system you need planetships! Starships are too big to fit between the planets. They have this big mirror, see, that concentrates the light of distant galaxies and reflects it onto the solar cells to get enough electricity to run the warp drive.

You'd have to tie up the studio execs somewhere else.
And add in the Stargate guys; sometimes, it is a bit cheesy, but has some good ideas.
(But I still can't get over them shooting replicators INSIDE THEIR STARSHIP, with automatic gunfire, and not damaging the ship in any way. This was in Ark of Truth.)

And here's a classic case of events ruining a show, in this case, a writers's strike.
Look up "The Starlost"

The Studio execs get Clockwork Oranged for about five weeks straight only they have to watch Blade Runner, Aliens, (the best episodes of) Firefly, BSG, B5, Twilight Zone... Metropolis, Forbidden Planet, Gattaca, and Minority Report etc... Then they will be forced to read Heinlien, Herbert, Asimov, Ellison, Clark, Bradbury, Drake, Webber and Niven until they get a clue.

The character development was superb in Firefly. Good acting, reasonably good story lines (a couple of them were kind of weak, but Heart of Gold made up for it in spades.) It is truly a shame that it didn't take off. Fox kept moving around when it was showing. I couldn't keep up with it, so I missed the broadcast. I got the season on DVD. I'm not much of a TV person. Yeah, getting serious a bit, the best SF puts you into a certain situation, world and universe with certain rules. It forces you to ask "what would I do?" if I were there, "How would I feel," "What do I think about this?" When you have no consistent rules in your universe, it just gets silly.

re: #152 kulhwch

Also through facebook I recently got in touch with an old co-worker from 15 years ago. He was/is a hard-core gun person, horrified by Obama. He and I goofed on each other's political beliefs after catching up, but all in fun, nothing like your experience. Too bad.

It is in the normal cycle of all things political that when there is a change of command that all the AG's in districts all across the country submit their letter of resignation. In the first year of Clinton nearly ALL 93 resignations were accepted (especially those in Arkansas). All positions were filled by cronies of Hillary! and FOB's. Not a peep from the FMSM.

How are we to deal with a FMSM that is hand in glove with the Democrats and held immense influence in the election of 'The One'?

Oh well, now we'll have a complete reflection of ObamUH and his Marxist ('The court has not delt with the issue of spreading the wealth, in my opinion.') beliefs in is first and perhaps not his only nomination to the SCOTUS.

Liberal ideology is viciously intolerant of conservative views. It's not a matter of one political affiliation versus another. It's a matter of conflicting life philosophies and levels of maturity.

Are you saying that conservative ideology is tolerant of liberal views? You are painting a wide range of people with a very broad brush there. Would people at say, the Michelle Malkin website be tolerant of liberal views? Speaking for myself, I know plenty of liberals and conservatives, most don't take political differences personally.

During a lively discussion with a moonbat co-worker about raising children ...values, morals, friends, the pitfalls, she told me that ALL of that "really takes a back seat to one thing: that her child be indelibly imprinted with the lesson that above everything else, she must learn to be true to herself." With a wave of her hand she dismissed everything else; this one thing was the only important thing. This was her only important value.
