Texas School Board Creationist Gets the Boot for Good

Science • Views: 14,209

Dentist Don McLeroy, the young earth creationist appointed to head the Texas State Board of Education twice by Republican Governor Rick Perry, has been rejected by the Texas Senate. I see this as very good news, but the Discovery Institute (who pushed hard to get their anti-evolution “academic freedom” language inserted into the state’s curriculum) will probably see it differently.

The Texas Freedom Network live-blogged the proceedings—and sure enough, every single Republican voted for the creationist to be in charge of teaching the children of Texas. The confirmation required a two-thirds majority, and the vote was 19 Republicans for, 11 Democrats against.

The Republican Party invariably chooses to vote against science, and in favor of atavism and young earth creationism — not just in Texas, either. What a sad state of affairs; it’s one reason why the GOP continues to lose elections, and is hemorrhaging voters.

UPDATE at 5/28/09 3:00:19 pm:

Sure enough, the Discovery Institute’s Casey Luskin (who testified in favor of “intelligent design” creationism at recent board hearings on curriculum standards) is already seething and whining about “censorship,” “power grabbing,” the “evolution lobby,” and “indoctrination:” Evolution News & Views: Texas Evolution Lobby Making Power Grabs to Promote Their Censorship Agenda.

In the strange inverted world of the Discovery Institute, a democratic vote in the Texas Senate equals a “power grab.”

UPDATE at 5/28/09 4:41:23 pm:

Hold on before you pop open the champagne, because Republican Governor will now have the chance to pick another chairman for the School Board — and this one won’t have to face the confirmation process until 2011.

Gov. Rick Perry, who nominated McLeroy, will now have to select another member of the board to serve as chairman. Whoever is picked will not have to face Senate confirmation until the 2011 legislative session, unless there is a special session before then.

It’s almost certain that Perry will select another creationist; he did, after all, pick McLeroy not once but twice, even after McLeroy’s Biblical literalist views were notorious. There’s no shortage of creationist Republicans currently on the School Board, so this debacle is going to have another chapter after all.

I believe future economic growth is going to depend a lot on strong American innovations in science and technology to keep us out in front. Anti-science education will damage the possibility for America to be a leader in these fields.

I saw some speculation however that this wouldn't remove him from the board, just the chair spot, and that the lady who might take over in his place could be worse. I"m headed out to the liveblog to see what's going on about that.

Well, with a lot of the left putting all their eggs in the "green" basket, and another part of the left eschewing a big part of medical science (vaccines) and the right denying a large part of biology, earth, and geological sciences, and their anti-vacer's, things don't look good.

The GOP doesn't see this as a science issue; it's a social issue of fighting back against liberal hegemony in the schools. It's just as likely to motivate religious conservatives as it is to discourage moderates, and GOP candidates wouldn't be tripping all over themselves to parrot idiot ID talking points if they thought it might hurt them politically. I still think it's a wash and not as important as many other things.

I disagree. The GOP sees this as a religious issue, and the fanaticism of many of the fundamentalist members of the party drives them to support creationism even though they know it hurts them politically -- because they don't care about the political damage.

And it is an important issue.

wrong

3:13 – Sen. Shapleigh brings up McLeroy’s endorsement of a book that says parents who want their kids to learn about evolution are “monsters,” scientists are “atheists,” and clergy who see no conflict between science and faith are “morons.” The senator recounts various board train wrecks, including the sabotaging of nearly three years of work by teachers and specialists to revise the state’s language arts standards. And he notes a particularly troubling quote from McLeroy: “Scientific consensus means nothing.”

The Disco Institute posted a whiney article regarding this decision. They're calling it "political retribution" by Texas evolutionists and a "power-grab sought by the Texas evolution-lobby." It ends with this paranoid rant:

All this amounts to an attempt to take control of the public school curriculum out of the hands of qualified elected officials and taxpaying and voting parents and put it into the hands of bureaucrats. Once the Texas evolution lobby has total vertical control of the curriculum, they hope to then also control—through indoctrination—the minds of the next generation of voters. Perhaps then Texas evolutionists will feel safe returning power to the people.

The "evolution lobby" will have vertical control of the curriculum and indoctrinate the "minds of the next generation?" This is straight out of a 1950s political sci-fi.

In order to achieve that science education needs to be as top-notch and as widespread as possible.

Even more important when you take into consideration that biological science is poised to be the Next Big Thing financially. It's awfully tough to call winners in such instances, of course, but there is currently very rapid development in all kinds of biological fields that is converging to produce useful products, processes, disease treatments and preventatives and more. The next quarter century may very well be fueled economically through the advancement and growth of bioengineering firms of various descriptions.

And a nation of slack-jawed morons taught since middle school that the earth is 6000 years old and that every living thing on it appeared with a sudden "Poof!" and they should just shut up and say their prayers instead of raising questions that will send them to Hell where they will burn in agony and torment for all eternity is not going to produce the kind of populace that will be able to benefit from such an economic shift.

But I have no problem with a religionist believing that God was the creator of evolution.

They're just whining, bitching and moaning because this means that they don't have control of the school curriculum, and thus don't get to indoctrinate the next generation in their pet religious dogmas.

It definitely reads that way.

That's the old "Billy Beer" joke!

The Miller Brewing Co. sent a sample to Texas A&M for analysis, but did it anonymously so as to avoid bad press. Their reply was "Dear Sir: This is an agricultural products laboratory, so we could not complete your requested analysis. However, we sent your horse urine sample to the School of Veterinary Medicine. Although we are sure you will receive a report from them, we felt obligated to inform you that your horse has diabetes."

My point being, as an atheist, I don't think there is any way to merge creationism with evolution, I don't believe evolution was put into motion by any sort of god.

But I have no problem with a religionist believing that God was the creator of evolution.

I do have a problem with any creationist trying to tell me evolution does not exist.

It only bothers me under the guise of education. On a street corner, I don't care.

If this were about stopping the leftist agenda then Discovery Institute would be spending their millions fighting deconstructionism in history and social studies courses rather than spending their millions attacking science like the luddite morons they are.

It's all about religion, and in particular their religion, which the wedge document explicitly points out.

I think the religious right conflates evolution and the leftist agenda. The see evolution as a secular humanist commie plot (and thus borne of the devil), not as a theory to be proven or invalidated in some logical way.

I heard Dr. Francis Collins (former head of the Human Genome Project) on Catholic radio last week, and he didn't see any problem reconciling evolution (even going all the way back to the Big Bang) and the Catholic faith.

Evolution doesn't GO 'all the way back to the Big Bang'. Stars and galaxies, and in fact the Universe itself, do not evolve; they have 'life' cycles. Evolution only comes into play when populations of organisms possessing high but imperfect copying fidelity are confronted by specific environments possessing particular challenges and opportunities. Only then do we have random genetic mutations nonrandomly selected by environments.

I think that improvement in our childrens' ability to use what education they receive depends upon them being able to correctly and efficiently sift through all the conflicting information with which they are currently inundated, and having the capacity to winnow out the empirically false and the logically self-contradictory.

This is why I think that it is important to furnish them with the cognitive tools with which to do this, and why I think that they should be taught both the scientific method of verification/falsification and Aristotelian logic in middle school. Such classes should not be electives; they should be mandatory.

re: #159 ArmyWife

This couldn't be more true, but will not be automatic with removing Creationism from science class (though that is a step in the right direction). Until we understand throwing money at a failing government program is not and won't be the solution, our education system will continue to decline. The answer lies in removing Union rule, removing liberal silly speak along with religious silly speak and getting back to educating: Science, Math, English, History, and select electives that assist the learning process such as foreign language, music, art.

Possibly. And the point of requiring kindergarteners to read a book about gay penguins parenting is?

This kind of abominable thinking is FREELY available from the hard left and the hard right. No matter how much fun it is to yelp about "fundies" and spit the word "Evangelical", or shout "moonbat" (a personal favorite), the point must remain that a quality education and a literate, thinking populace is the ONLY justification for our public school systems, and it has to be defended.

Along the same lines; a former girlfriend pressured me into watching Captain Corelli's Mandolin some years back. In the scene in which the delectable Penelope Cruz finally gets sorta nekkid, she raises her arms to embrace Nick Cage.. revealing hairy armpits.

Now... I suppose the director was striving for authenticity or something like that; but if we're able to suspend our disbelief sufficiently to believe that she's speaking Greek, can't they also indulge us by pretending that Greek girls during WWII had access to Epiladies?

Along the same lines; a former girlfriend pressured me into watching Captain Corelli's Mandolin some years back. In the scene in which the delectable Penelope Cruz finally gets sorta nekkid, she raises her arms to embrace Nick Cage.. revealing hairy armpits.

Now... I suppose the director was striving for authenticity or something like that; but if we're able to suspend our disbelief sufficiently to believe that she's speaking Greek, can't they also indulge us by pretending that Greek girls during WWII had access to Epiladies?

Spike Lee made a WWII movie in which a US soldier and a little Italian kid did a 'high-five', so I'd expect shaven underarms would be fine.

Going off topic, but only kind-of-sort-of: there's a link posted, highly rated, claiming that the Chrysler dealerships that got closed were disproportionately Republican. The post claims that Red states are particularly hard hit.

Now I didn't have time or energy to check every possible slant on this, but what I can say is that the average number of closed dealerships per electoral vote in states that went for Obama in 2008 was 1.42, while for states that went for McCain, it was 1.49. In my not-that-humble opinion, this is thin evidence, verging on no evidence, for the claim. If the numbers had been 1.31 vs 1.56, that might tell us something. Not this decimal hairsplitting difference.

As a proud immigrant to the Lone Star State, I've never understood why it is that a state blessed by the Almighty as Texas undoubtedly was and is, should be saddled with legislators and other leaders who seem to gravitate toward this whacky crap.

Three things inspired my move to this state:

1) No income tax;
2) Shall-issue for CCW; and
3) Death penalty.

Who knew that it came with whacky Creationism? I didn't ask for it, but it just sorta seems to come with the others, like a Happy Meal, where you've gotta take the crappy toy.

More Fun with Texas Representatives: Warren Chisum, Pampa.
Here's where creationism converges with crazy antisemitism.

(Story from 2007)

Rep. Warren Chisum, R-Pampa, apologized to Jewish groups after circulating a memo calling evolution a kabbalah conspiracy. On Feb. 9, Chisum forwarded a memo from Georgia state Rep. Ben Bridges, R-Cleveland, to members of the House. In it, avowed creationist Bridges proposed a draft bill outlawing teaching evolution in tax-funded schools. He'd failed to get it through the Georgia Legislature in 2005, but now he's sending it to like-minded legislators in other states. In his covering letter, Chisum thanked Bridges for his "information on this important topic." However, "evidence" in the memo comes from anti-Semitic conspiracy theory Web site [Link: www.fixedearth.com....] Run by former high school teacher Marshall Hall, it claims that many scientific theories of the past thousand years are part of a massive Jewish conspiracy and calls the Big Bang a "15-billion-year alternate 'creation scenario' of the Pharisee religion." Now the finger-pointing begins: Chisum claims he was just being a "Good Samaritan" to Bridges and had not read the Web site, Bridges claims Hall wrote the memo without asking him, and Hall says that just because he calls evolution a Jewish conspiracy, that doesn't mean he's anti-Semitic. Bridge's bill, if taken up by any legislator, would put the term "anti-Christ" in the law books. – R.W.

Yes, in fact, most beans will sprout. Let them go about a day or two, then dry 'em and grind 'em into bread batter, for a cheap boost of protein. Like wheat bread? Half whole grain flour, and half sprouted wheatberries makes a delicious base for bread. And cheap as hell.

Not quite enough time right now, fixin' to leave in a few and go take a walk on top of Mount Falcon...

------------
The story of Mount Falcon is largely the story of John Brisben Walker, who once owned over 4,000 acres of land in this area. During the early 1900's Walker lived in an elaborate stone house on Mount Falcon while planning the construction of a summer home for the Presidents of the United States, which was to have been located on a ridge to the east of his home. Walker's home burned in 1918, and all that remains of this once splendid edifice are the massive stone walls and numerous fireplaces of a unique mountain castle.

On this site the crumbling remnants of a broken dream and the views of the plains to the east and mountains to the west combine to create an inspirational setting. The construction of the Summer White House never proceeded beyond the laying of the foundation and cornerstone, though thousands of Colorado school children each donated 10 cents toward Walker's dream. American involvement in W.W. I, combined with a waning of Walker's good fortunes, brought an end to this project. From the site of the Summer White House one may look down on Red Rocks Park, one of Walker's dreams come true.

John Brisben Walker was a man of many visions. He made fortunes on land speculation in West Virginia and his purchase of Cosmopolitan Magazine, but other ventures were less successful. Walker's purchase of the Stanley Steamer Company was a losing bet against Henry Ford's internal combustion engine. Although he held vast fortunes at various times in his life, Walker died penniless in 1931 at the age of 83.

312 Mr Secul  Thu, May 28, 2009 4:05:24pm

I wonder where Michael Behe will go?

He accepts macroevolution and common descent. He accepts evolution, he just tries to reserve a place for God.

Both Behe and Collins assume that God exists, he created the universe. Both accept evolution but both argue that God gives evolution a helping hand, now and then, in a way that we can't detect.

That's a lot to have in common.

Collins seems to think that evolution is sufficient to create complex organisms. He has argued that God pokes the genes now and then to direct the process towards his intended ends but he seems to prefer to argue that God set up the universe so that its laws inevitably lead to intelligent life. He then suggests that when a bright enough species arose, God injected it with divinity.

Behe has argued that evolution can do the small stuff but it needs a helping hand to do the heavy lifting.

I remember Tolkien writing that evil is not creative, only God creates. This is an old Christian idea and I think that it informs Behe's thinking.

I think that Behe has shown a willingness to change his views in the light of evidence. I don't think that he accepted common descent before his drubbing in Dover (though I could be wrong about that).

He received another drubbing from Abbie here.

Behe was arguing that evolution cab break stuff but certain things are too complex to evolve by natural selection. Abbie showed that HIV has done the kinds of things that Behe claimed were not possible without God's help.

This doesn't disprove Behe's contention. But what it means is, that if Behe is right then God is helping out with the bad stuff as well as with the good stuff.

This removes the moral/ethical distinction between guided evolution and natural selection. Its no longer: God does the good stuff, natural selection does the rest.

Behe need not argue that God make a second rate universe with life that needs God's hand to cope with the simple things that life has to deal with. He could argue that God was clever enough to make a competent universe with life that was able to adapt and develop intelligence without requiring help.

God could step in and put a divine spark into whatever organism became capable of advanced thought.

I imagine that the Biologos ideas might appeal to Behe.

"The perception — if we vote against Dr. McLeroy — amongst a significant number of Texans is if you are a conservative, if you believe in the infallibility and the literacy of the Bible, there's no need to apply to be on the State Board of Education. And I don't know that we want to send that message," said Sen. Steve Ogden, R-Bryan. Ogden said the Bryan dentist is qualified and has the governor's support.

"To a certain degree it's a slur. And to say that someone is not qualified to be on the State Board of Education as chairman because the New York Times or Washington Post criticizes him is ridiculous," Ogden said.

Per the Dallas Morning News:

Gov. Rick Perry, who nominated McLeroy, will now have to select another member of the board to serve as chairman. Whoever is picked will not have to face Senate confirmation until the 2011 legislative session, unless there is a special session before then.

I predict a Creationist Free-for-All in the meantime. McLeroy isn't the only creationist name available to pull from the hat, I'm sure. The next one can go batshit nuts until 2011.

GOP senators rejected the criticism and accused the Democrats of holding an "inquisition" against the College Station Republican, who is a critic of Charles Darwin's theory of evolution.

Chevy Chase convincingly played an evil totalitarian on the action comedy series "Chuck" recently. I thought it was true to his real self, that pushed Jimmy Carter on us by playing former President Ford as a stumbling bumbling fool. (When in fact Pres. I refuse to give him credit for it. Its bad enough he is taking credit for everything else.

I don't think so. I'm not all that sure I'd ever seen the gesture outside of the urban youth culture settings, and those taking their cues from it. It sure as hell entered the popular culture pretty damned quickly after the Ascent of Barry, seems to me. It was certainly noted by WaPo columnists as marking a sort of cultural shift of some type, consistent with the image of Obama the Cool.

So, I'm going to go out on a limb and suggest the fist-bump would have remained firmly within its native cultural milleau had not Barry brought it center-stage and invested it thereby with some of his aura.

One of the most effective remedies for coughs is codeine.

However, recent studies have shown that 1,000 mg of theobromine daily has proven 33% more effective that the standard dosage of codeine in combating coughs.

While you could go to your doctor and ask him for a prescription for theobromine, it's much easier to get your daily 1,000 mg of theobromine by eating 2 oz. of dark chocolate!

Palestinians still live in misery? You don't say. They've been living in misery for decades because their fellow Arabs decided that refugee camps are the only place for them - decades later, and they're still there. The terrorists use 'em as cannon fodder and couldn't care less about the harm to civilians.

They seem to like bulldozers and backhoes, they should put some of their lazy-assed population to work and clean up that mess.

Nipsey Russell

Born in Atlanta, Georgia, Russell went to Booker T. Washington High School in Atlanta and attended the University of Cincinnati for one semester in 1936. He served as a medic in the United States Army during World War II, enlisting as a private on June 27, 1941, and returning from Europe in 1945 as a second lieutenant. He got his start in the 1940s as a carhop at the Atlanta drive-in The Varsity, where he increased the tips he earned by making customers laugh. He was discovered after he began performing in nightclubs in the 1950s. He subsequently made many "party albums," which were essentially compilations of his stand-up routines.

There is a fair chance that scientists will show that its likely that the operation of natural laws can account for abiogenesis and evolution.

This doesn't disprove God because many religious people believe that God made those laws.

Can they prove it? I think not.

Is it just chance that the laws are capable of this feat?

Many atheists think so.

Can they prove it? I think not.

The DI crowd are worried that people will abandon faith if they are convinced that natural laws are sufficient to explain life.

So they try to argue that natural laws on their own are insufficient to achieve life.

But if all Christians and like minded theists are right then the natural laws have never been on their own.

God made them and God made/makes them work. Either he spoke the magic words to spring them into existence and needed to do nothing further.

Or he is running around like a blue arsed fly to keep the plates spinning.

Either way, if they are sufficient then that is because he made/makes sure that they were sufficient.

Either his word was enough: he makes a law and the electrons just obey it. Or his invisible hands spin every electron around every atom for every nano-second of the universe's existence.

Since we can't see his hands, if natural laws are sufficient then the universe looks the same whether he exists or not.

Can natural laws be shown to be insufficient?

If your current understanding says the are not sufficient how do you know that a better understanding wont show that you were wrong to think that they were insufficient?

Does HIV's acquisition of features that Behe claims are beyond evolution show that Behe was wrong? Or does it show that God helped HIV?

The whole religion/evolution argument seems pointless. Sufficiency of natural laws does not disprove God. Insufficiency shows there is something left unexplained. This may or may not be God.

Why can't people just let the scientists get on with working out the natural laws and we can raise a generation that better understands the natural world?

The funny thing is that none of the dealerships should have been closed. The dealers do not cost either GM or Chrysler ANYTHING to operate. In fact, dealerships are required by contract to purchase parts and service cars as a service TO the auto manufacturers. If I owned a dealership that just had a contract severed I would hire the meanest pack of lawyers to chase after everyone involved in this decision. Another time, I had an employee we were about to can, who held a very sensitive job, to assist in screening and interviewing her replacements. We did it like this - we dropped hints all over the place that she was about to get promoted to a just-opened position one rank above hers, and so we'd need to make sure that we found the right person to take over her duties. Cold-blooded, I know, but that was how Management wanted it done.

Now they're all bankrupt, dealerships are closing, people are losing jobs (all the things that Obama was going to "prevent"with our billions of dollars) but the Union will reap whatever profits are left.

Bzzzt . . . the burden of proof is on the one making the extraordinary claim. If you want people who require proof to believe an extraordinary claim, offer up your extraordinary evidence.

If you don't want to worry about swaying people who require proof of a statement, don't worry about them.

I remember, at another job I had, that I had gotten so good at firing people that I once managed to fire an employee in the parking lot before she'd even managed to shut off the engine of her car. Fired her that fast.

You are evil.

No kidding!

I read in recent The Weekly Standard cover article about E-bay's founder and future GOP candidate for California governor, Meg Whitman, that E-Bay is the world's largest car selling business.

Anyone else see that?

That makes sense, and I'm the world largest Studebaker dealer. I sell 12-30 a year on ebay.

Gov. Perry won't appoint a scientist to the school Board and he won't even consider allowing even 80,000 more children in the Children's Health Insurance Program (CHIP). Read the article to see how poor a family has to be before becoming eligible for CHIP. You're a cad, Guv Perry. Even a computer couldn't aid you in drafting logical and humane legislation.
