Pat Buchanan’s Executive Director to Be Sentenced for Violent Hate Crime

US News • Views: 18,790

This just in: Marcus Epstein, executive director of Pat Buchanan’s “The American Cause” and Tom Tancredo’s Team America PAC, and founder of “Youth for Western Civilization,” is going to be sentenced on July 8th for verbally and physically assaulting a black woman in Washington DC in 2007.

According to documents obtained from District of Columbia’s Superior Court, Epstein, 25, must appear before Judge Wendell P. Gardner on July 8 for sentencing after pleading guilty to simple assault charges stemming from an incident during the early evening hours of July 7, 2007. The documents state that Epstein was walking down the street making offensive remarks when he encountered the victim, called her the “N-word” and struck her in her head. He was briefly detained by the woman’s husband, but was able to escape, only to be arrested minutes later by a Secret Service officer who witnessed the attack. According to the officer’s statement, a friend of Epstein’s informed him that he had been drinking.

A restraining order to stay away from the couple has been imposed on Epstein. He currently faces a maximum punishment of 180 days in jail and $1000 fine and also had to continue mental health treatment, complete an alcohol treatment program, write a letter of apology to the victim and donate $1000 to the United Negro College Fund prior to sentencing.

Epstein has been involved in political activism since his undergraduate days at the College of William and Mary, editing the Remnant, a now defunct conservative student newspaper on campus, and interning at the conservative Leadership Institute. In 2006 he founded the paleoconservative Robert Taft Club, and generated controversy when he attempted to hold a forum on conservatives and race at the Leadership Institute office building featuring his friend American Renaissance editor Jared Taylor on the panel. When they learned of the nature of the forum, the Leadership Institute disallowed it to be held there, and it was moved. Epstein is also the executive director of The American Cause, the research foundation chaired by Pat Buchanan and Bay Buchanan that promotes an America First policy in trade, immigration, and foreign policy, and Team America PAC, a committee founded by former congressman Tom Tancredo and chaired by Bay Buchanan that supports an extremely restrictive immigration policy. Epstein’s political activism also included appearing on The Political Cesspool, a white supremacist radio program hosted by Council of Conservative Citizens member James Edwards that proudly admits to hosting white supremacists and Neo-Nazi figures.

Once again, we see connections between European fascists and American paleocon racists; here’s a photo of Epstein with the leaders of the Belgian fascist group Vlaams Belang, Filip DeWinter and Frank Vanhecke, in February 2007 at the Robert Taft Club in Virginia:

And here’s Pat Buchanan himself with the same two European fascists, during their visit to the US in 2007:

In my experience, alcohol just lowers the inhibitions enough so that people become more of what they always were. The alcohol doesn't make you into someone else.

A person doesn't magically transform into a wifebeater or a racist because of the alcohol...if they do those things drunk it's only because they feel that way sober too.

I really hate the "alcohol made me do it" defense.

Check out what MSNBC says about the Holocaust denialer Pat Buchanan on it's web site:

Pat Buchanan, one of America’s leading conservative voices, is a political analyst and regular contributor on MSNBC.

BUCHANAN WAS ONE of the original hosts on CNN’s “Crossfire,” serving between 1982-1999, with time off to run for president three times. A senior advisor to three American presidents (Nixon, Ford and Reagan) and a presidential candidate himself during the ’92, ’96 and 2000 campaigns, Buchanan is one of the nation’s foremost conservative political figures....

Matthews did not ask Buchanan whether he approved of or agreed with the Holocaust denying screeds that were posted on Buchanan.org. Andrea Mitchell did not ask Buchanan how and why the Holocaust denial forum was so suddenly removed from his website.

Matthews would never have remained silent in the face of slurs directed at Irish-Americans, or Scarborough at Southern conservative Christians, or Brzezinski at Polish Catholics, or Mitchell at women. On a semi-related note (criminal justice), I found this article that an imprisoned federal convict got only 188 months for "assault with intent to commit murder." There are people who have received longer sentences for selling a few kilos of drugs to other adults! (and I'm not in favor of legalization).

Any inmate who tries to kill someone inside the prison (not talking about self-defense) -- another inmate, staff, volunteers, contractors, or visitors, should get a life term. And if they already have a life term, it may be time for the death penalty (and I only favor that in such circumstances).

An American Asks: What’s So Bad About The BNP Anyway?
By J. Paige Straley

SNIP

The stakes are high for Britain. Shall it retain its traditional identity, or become a collection of synthetic citizens, whose opinion is perhaps better polled as mere consumer preference?

SNIP

It would be interesting to see a country-wide nationalist political party in the US so straightforward in its platform, and so effective in its party-building effort. If BNP are successful on June 4, it will be a lesson to patriots throughout Europe and the US.

Essentially an endorsement for the racist ideologies of BNP.

"Hate Crimes" Law Undermines Protection of Individual Rights
(from 2003)

Leaders from both parties--Republican Senator Orrin Hatch and Democrat Ted Kennedy--have vowed to push through a new, wide-reaching federal "hate crimes" bill before the end of the current session. A "hate crimes" law would make crimes motivated by enmity toward blacks, gays or other protected groups into a special federal offense. The ostensible purpose of such a law is to protect minorities from persecution. The result, however, would be the exact opposite. Targeting those with "politically incorrect" motives undermines the principle of objective law which undergirds our legal system's protection of rights.

Criminal law exists to prohibit certain actions--to safeguard individuals against force or fraud. For this purpose, there is no shortage of existing statutes. For instance, the killer of Matthew Shepard, the gay college student from Wyoming, was charged with a state crime.

What, then, will a "hate crimes" law add? Despite its name, it is not "hatred" as such that the proposed law targets. After all, which crimes aren't motivated by hatred? Are assaults and murders usually committed out of benevolence toward the victim? The real target is the criminal's ideas. The proposed law declares that criminals motivated by a government-designated set of intolerable ideas--racism, sexism, religious sectarianism, anti-homosexuality--deserve special prosecution and additional punishment.

But to subject someone to trial and punishment on the basis of his ideas--regardless of how despicable those ideas might be--constitutes a politicization of criminal law. Why, for example, should a racist be prosecuted for the special crime of targeting blacks, while the Unabomber is not subject to special prosecution for his hatred of scientists and business executives? The only answer is that the Unabomber's ideas are considered more "politically correct" than the racist's.

There was so much violent crime in that neighbourhood not because of guns, drugs or poverty but because there is a lack of self-respect. No one cares what some KKK member says or thinks but when an African American says it I just feel that it is such a shame that people are using that word that was used to degrade them in the past.

“She misspoke,” said Lanny Davis, a White House lawyer and spokesman for President Bill Clinton. “Every day that goes by that they don’t say she misspoke and she used the wrong words ... they just feed it and give it life and give Rush [Limbaugh] and [Sean] Hannity more airtime unnecessarily.”

Said Democratic strategist Chris Lehane: “In this day and age, six or seven or eight weeks is a long time to go without addressing an issue that can potentially take on a life of its own and evolve and grow.”

Lehane said the GOP attacks were “probably continuing the long-term self-destruction of the Republican Party.” However, he said allowing talk show hosts, blogs and cable shows to continue to fulminate about Sotomayor’s Berkeley comments was risky.

Tancredo's entirely valid concern about Sotomayor's association with La Raza has just been nuked right off the planet by his own association with this freak Epstein.

"NCLR responded to Norwood's conditions apology in a point-by-point press release defending its policies, which it claims have never been racially or ethnically exclusionary, never supported and does not endorse the notion of a “Reconquista” or “Aztlán,” has never used, and unequivocally rejects, the motto “Por La Raza todo. Fuera de La Raza nada", has supported numerous measures to ensure that all Americans have the freedom to choose where to live, and stated that its programs are already covered by civil rights laws administered by independent agencies at the federal, state, and local level."

La Raza.

I think what bothers me the most about the polarization of the Republican Party is that the NRA and other 2nd amendment organizations are melded into the whacko contingent in the public eye.

The last NRA convention I attended wasn't as diverse as I'd like to have seen it. It's a problem, a big problem for the 2nd Amendment.

No, it's worse.

From your link...

Identifying himself as "Hal from North Bergen", Turner became notable in American conservative circles as a frequent caller to WABC radio talk shows hosted by Bob Grant and Sean Hannity.[4] Turner parlayed this fame into a role as the northern New Jersey coordinator for Patrick J. Buchanan's 1992 presidential campaign. He went on to serve as campaign manager for Libertarian Party candidate Murray Sabrin in New Jersey in the 1990s, including a 1997 gubernatorial campaign.[5]

Turner reportedly established a friendship with Sean Hannity, on whose program he was a frequent presence.[4] However, when confronted by the New Black Panther Party's Malik Zulu Shabazz about his association with Turner (in light of Hannity's scrutiny of Barack Obama's association with Jeremiah Wright), Hannity at first denied knowing Turner, then said he had banned Turner from his radio station, and that he never supported Turner's views. Turner subsequently posted this response on his website: "I was quite disappointed when Sean Hannity at first tried to say he didn't know me. In fact, Sean does know me and we were quite friendly a few years ago."[6][7]

Interesting, I think, that we got the second amendment by shooting people. (British soldiers.) Why does anyone think they can take it away? Not for long, anyway.

Well, I think the current socialist meme is that all killing by gun is bad, worse than other killing, far worse--mostly because there is a disporportionate amount of young black men killed by those using a fireram. Therefore, those who are in favor of the 2nd amendment are racists.

See the illogic?

Actually, it is a red herring. The socialists have figured out that it is REALLY hard to control people who can defend themselves.

Yep. From the ADL link on it:

Christian Identity is a religious ideology popular in extreme right-wing circles. Adherents believe that whites of European descent can be traced back to the "Lost Tribes of Israel." Many consider Jews to be the Satanic offspring of Eve and the Serpent, while non-whites are "mud peoples" created before Adam and Eve. Its virulent racist and anti-Semitic beliefs are usually accompanied by extreme anti-government sentiments. Despite its small size, Christian Identity influences virtually all white supremacist and extreme anti-government movements. It has also informed criminal behavior ranging from hate crimes to acts of terrorism.

Very scary people.

Thank you, iceweasel. That article is provides very good background.

You're very welcome!

Christian Identity people are exactly the kind of extremists that the DHS report was talking about. They're terrifying. Here is an excerpt from a very good blog on the subject, if people are interested:

Of all the permutations of the Patriot movement’s Christian Identity factions, the Phineas Priesthood is perhaps the most insidious and frightening. The clear threat of violence lies at the heart of the group’s agenda, and as the Spokane bombings suggest, its members are prepared to carry it out -- on a national scale. The sect’s tendrils extend to some of the most notorious crimes of recent history, to Oklahoma City and, possibly, to the burning embers of black churches in the South.

The Phineas Priesthood wants to force the country to adhere to “God’s Laws.” And its adherents plan to punish people who violate them. Their blueprint:

-- “Executing” interracial couples and homosexuals.

-- Bombing abortion clinics and “executing” abortion doctors.

-- Bombing civil-rights centers and “executing” civil-rights leaders and other “race mixers.”

-- Robbing banks to finance their activities, purchase arms, and help fund the work of other radical Patriots and white supremacists.

Each of these crimes, adherents of the sect believe, is justified because they represent enforcement of God’s laws -- specifically, Old Testament laws regarding homosexuality, abortion, race mixing, and money lending. These laws -- inspired, evidently, by verses from the Old Testament and Apocrypha -- supersede secular society’s rules, they believe, and only when Americans adhere to them will God bless the nation again. They see themselves as real Christian heroes.

I highly recommend the whole article at this link: [Link: dneiwert.blogspot.com...]
but it is very frightening bedtime reading, believe me.

the previously so called bad actors or axis of evil are just misunderstood so if we humor them and talk nice to them and offer them all the red hering demands they have been grumbling about, and throw in a couple, mea culpas about how we suck they will change thier ways because they were only ever misunderstood, like james dean or vinnie barborino.

Well there are Christians, and there are Christian Identists. The Identists don't advertise the Identity part, some Christians get fooled.

Townhall.com was founded and, until recently, operated by the Heritage Foundation (hardly a hate group, outside the fever swamps of the looney left). They were recently bought by an evangelical publishing outfit called Salem Communications (not exactly a fly-by-night operation either).

[Link: en.wikipedia.org...]

I used to go there quite regularly for people like Dennis Prager, Thomas Sowell, Charles Krauthammer,... these and Dinesh D'Souza would all be very surprised to be "white Christian Identity" ;-) I essentially stopped going there because of two things: (a) their unwillingness to give Pat Pukecannon the boot; (b) finding alternative places to read everybody I was interested in.

Actually, Pukecannon is carried by Creators Syndicate, which (besides eminently readworthy people like Michael Barone) also carries looney-LEFT nutjob Robert Scheer.

[Link: en.wikipedia.org...]

As much as I despise Pukecannon, playing indiscriminate "six degrees" with him would net you not just most of the conservative blogosphere (Pukecannon is not a conservative by muy definition but a reactionary populist) but much of the mainstream media (via MSNBC --- and he also was on CNN for years).

Meanwhile, Hillary is getting tough - no, not on Norks, but on Israel, because Obama wants them to stop expanding settlements on land the Palis want.

She is a Jew hater, and she would like nothing better that to bring Israel down, along with Hussein, who seems to have the destruction of Israel as his Job One, while N. Korea and Iran are getting ever closer to using their nuclear power on countries, including Israel, who will have to go it alone against Iran, as Hussein is such a weak-kneed wuss.

And the rumblings coming out of N. Korea will make it even more imperative that Israel strikes Iran first, just as they did to Iraq.

Absolutely. Hardly anyone knows about the CI movement, but you start looking at it and they're connected to virtually every dangerous domestic terrorism/extremist group act--including Timothy McVeigh, the KKK (the guy who killed Medgar Evers was a member of CI), Aryan Nations-- everything. They're small in number but disproportionately influential.

One of the worst things about the shrieking around the DHS report is that the howling distracted everyone from movements like CI, which were the real target of that report.

I own a book of sayings of Pat Buchanan called Deng Xiaoping Is a Chain-Smoking Communist Dwarf. It was a garage sale find that I got years ago to see how funny it would be. It's a flimsy little paperback that has the awful truth of where his heart and mind is. You know, defending David Duke, railing on women and minorities, and his infamous

"You've got a great atrocity that occurred 35-45 years ago, okay? Why continue to invest… put millions of dollars into investigating that? I mean why keep a special office to investigate Nazi war crimes?"

He said that in 1982, and it was quoted in the NY Daily News in '85, according to the book.

Yeah, the Holocaust is old news. Sept 11 is getting stale too, right? If it only takes 35 years to forget atrocities, we're on our way to paving Ground Zero for a parking lot.

Very true.
In the case of the gay community and the public sex at Up Your Alley, etc, I get very angry. I'm all for people getting their freak on however they want to --so long as it's consensual I don't care what people do or who they do it with. But this is purportedly an expression of gay pride and it's pitched like it's about gay rights--it isn't. It's a celebration of privilege by the people who are lucky enough, fortunate enough, to be openly gay--that group is mostly affluent white males living in a place like SF or NYC.

If you really care about gay rights, you'd be doing stuff to make a better world for the gay Latino in poverty, the scared kid in a fundamentalist community, and so on.

Instead, this is an excuse to f*ck in public and it provides ammo to the homophobes and the people who may even be for gay rights in principle, but don't know any gay people and decide they're all insane disgusting freaks on the basis of this behaviour. It's stupid and counterproductive and selfish.

If anything else, I've seen where mace has been used out of indignation, where the guy wasn't Brad Pitt or something. Some folks take the "Don't hit a woman" theme to the point where it is a black check to be as abusive as possible to the men. 409 MacDuff  Fri, May 29, 2009 7:41:20am

This has caused me to think about "Populism", and the perils thereof.

Personally, I've never cared for "Populists", however they're masked. When I hear someone portrayed as a "Populist", I , envision a guy with a noose in his hand, rallying the mob to do his bidding.

In my view, "Populism" is no more than mob rule, appealing more to emotion than to reason.

In recent years, "Populism" has been trotted out wearing a "Conservative" mask; Pat "peasants with pitchforks" Buchanan, Ross Perot, Tom Tancredo and, most recently, Ron Paul are the most notable. They all offer "simple" solutions to complex problems and inspire a nearly blind allegiance among their followers.

This isn't Conservatism; it's fascism. We ask Muslims to disown the radicals in their midst, so must we disown the radicals in ours.

I don't know if Pat Buchanan went to the dark side at some point over the last 20 years, or if he's always been on the dark side and kept it well hidden. At this point, I don't care; he is a dark figure in American politics and delights in playing upon the vilest emotions in the recesses of man.

As for Tom Tancredo, his overheated rhetoric regarding immigration always had a putrid smell of racism.

These perilous times do not call for "Populists" or the tainted message that they sell; these times call for reason and statesmanship. These people are neither Conservative nor are they Republican and their very presence among us marginalizes all of us.

Conservatives must embrace a positive message, offer reasoned solutions to the problems before us and, most importantly, extricate the crypto-fascist parasite that threatens our worthy goals.

I am still curious though, why we have not seen a similar expose' on Sotomayor and her association with La Raza, after all, here we have a nominee to the SCOTUS who is a member of a group which Charles himself has called:

rabidly racist Mexican-American group with an open agenda to turn the Western states of the US into "Aztlan?".

Charles has done such a wonderful job exposing these kinds of associations, I just hope the train has not already left the station on this one and we get stuck with an obvious racist on the SC.

A more accurate statement might be "Nobody should initiate the aggressive use of force against anyone else" while carefully noting that self-defense is a whole different ball-game wherein hitting, lacerating, and perforating are perfectly legitimate means of discouraging assailants.

More generally, though, the tone that seemed to equate paleocons to racists as a class, seemed regrettable, at best.

While some racists (aka bastards) may claim to be Paleocons, Paleocon =/= racist, as a class. Add to that, that the term racism has been so over-used to describe *disliked, but not necessarily race-based* behavior as to have lost much of its' meaning beyond that of a bogey-man to bash the badly behaving with.

Buchanan and his ilk have stepped outside the conservative paradigm entirely, into an entirely new realm - "blazing nut case".

I've never liked Pat B., but really, guilt by association is very risky, isn't it? I can still see in my mind's eye the photo of FDR, Stalin and Churchill together. Let's be careful of this. One of my neighbors (acquaintance, but came to our barbecues and we went to theirs) went to prison for murder. One would have never known. Many of my students have peers and siblings locked down in prisons all around the area here--not to mention belonging to subversive groups and gangs. I have to look past these things because next thing I know, someone is going to say that my own associations damn me, too. Look at Obama. Do we really think his associations have made him something other (in secret) than the man he is today? ....or not?

He is guilty of "associating" ie "meeting" with Vlaams Belang. Is that enough for you?

If I may, I don't think this fits the description of "guilt by association"; this is an alliance of fascists.

In all fairness, FDR, Stalin and Churchill were allies in the fight against the Nazis in the interest of preserving Europe. We simply could not have won that war without Stalin's help, and we had to accept the lesser of evils in the interest of self preservation. Wars make for strange bedfellows at times and comparing that situation with this one is like comparing apples to oranges.

Pat and his ilk have long displayed fascist tendencies and now, it would appear, have come out of the closet in a display of free association.

As for your neighbor, as you said "no one would have known". One can't be blamed for associating with a person who later commits crimes; one can seldom foretell these things. This is an effort to expose people for what they truly are NOW, so that no one can say "we had no idea".

Do I think that Obama's past associations have had an impact on who he is today? Absolutely, but, alas, he is now the President and we cannot cry over spilled milk.

I would argue that being a member of a racist organization should disqualify anyone for most, if not all public offices whether appointed or elected, wouldn't you?

No, I didn't say "she is qualified." I said we shouldn't jump to conclusions based on quotes taken out of context. Please don't speak for me.

re: #412 Walk Not So Softly

Pat's association to these kinds of people is old news, really. Not to mention that Pat's influence is rather weak these days. Kind of an easy target for this kind of post, TBH. I am still curious though, why we have not seen a similar expose' on Sotomayor and her association with La Raza...

We've already had several lengthy discussions about this. It's not relevant to this thread.

And you are very wrong to call this "old news," or to imply that we should just ignore Pat Buchanan.

Most Paleos are racists, or apologize for racism. There's thin difference between the two.

If you search LGF for our past entries about Pat Buchanan, you'll see that this is absolutely not an isolated incident, or "guilt by association." And nobody is jumping to any conclusions. There's a very long history of Buchanan's associations with extremists and European fascists, and an equally long history of his own hateful comments.

And by the way, "guilt by association" is not always wrong, is it? If someone chooses to associate with racists and fascists, what's wrong with calling attention to it? It absolutely is meaningful and relevant to point out these associations.

re: #416 ihateronpaul

No, seeing Pat B. with VB is not enough for me to condemn the man. I have no idea why he was sitting with them for any reason. We have photos of Obama smiling and holding hands with Hugo Chavez--and I really don't think for a moment that Obama is in the pocket of that maniac. One of the reasons we should take the "innocent until proven guilty" approach is that we don't know when we are going to be sitting with someone who later proves to be beyond the pale. And while I'm saying this--why not be fair to me about this? I'm no friend of VB or whatever they are--nor nazis, nor right wing extremists, and I don't eat with them, consort with them, seek them out, or probably even like them--if I knew who they were. yes, I have looked at websites like Atlas, or JW, but I have nothing in common with them--so don't even bother. Yes, I have acquaintances who are atheists, and some who are traditional and even fundamentalists. However, our relationships don't center around areas of disagreement, so live and let live, I say. I'm conservative in some ways, but liberal in others. I don't care if gays marry--let them. I don't like being taxed to the wall, though, and hate some of the out of control unions--like the one to which I'm forced to belong. However, I have friends in the union who are hard liners--but we don't go there. When I was a reporter, I knew some undercover narcs, too. Boy, were certain people quick to judge me by my company then. So I'm wary of guilt by association. You never know. As far as the right wingers in Europe are concerned--seems like they have plenty of opposition from people with long memories of past debacles. Most, if not all, of you on this blog know far more about that fight than I do. You obviously detect the danger far better than I do. I don't know the players--although I see them mentioned here: Pam Geller, Robert Spencer. Call me sleepy. Maybe I just haven't awakened yet to the sirens you are hearing loud and clear.

re: #424 Charles

Charles, I don't really know how to search for these things--my acumen is not strong in the computer area where you are undoubtedly expert. I agree, though, that guilt by association (birds of a feather) is not always wrong, but I try not to jump to conclusions. Too many bad memories of my own, I guess. You know, the new girl who unknowingly ends up associating with the uncool kids because she doesn't know any better? Maybe if I knew more about this, I'd be a better judge. However, I know you've done an awfully good job of documenting these things and your judgment has proven accurate on many, many occasions.

re: #424 Charles

Ah, I forgot to address the Pat B. comments. I lived out of the country for a long time, when I returned, the two Pats (Robertson and Buchanan) were front and center in the news--for some reason, they are commingled in my head. I have heard reports of both saying hateful things. I can't remember which one at the moment, but one of them called for the assassination of Hugo Chavez, I think. Buchanan gets on my last nerve, so if he's talking--I'm changing the channel.

So Epstein is the tiny nerdy bifocled guy in the middle behind the speaker.... So perhaps he can't afford a Porsche to compensate for his Napoleonic complex? so instead he harangues black women and pals around with neo fascists?
Epstein of course indicates a likelihood of him being Jewish or having some Jewish lineage.... and he's hanging out with neo fascists.... lol...

Charles don't come back and say Geller is hanging out with neo fascists too... this guy's a blatant racist... Geller's perhaps fooling herself as far as the right wing's aid in the cause of exposing Muslim fundamentalism in a new PC world that can't/won't deal with it... we both know she's not going to haranging black women and using the N word...

Pam apologizes for racists, Pam accommodates racists, Pam facilitates them, furthers their talking points, and further attacks those who oppose them viciously. You are arguing shades of degrees of racism thinner than hairs.
