Now that I think on it- if the Onion were to have air time on a network, they'd likely be beholden to the network and their bits would lose some of their edge. Staying independent allows them to do what they do in their way. A network would water them down and ruin it. Keep doing what you're doing Onion- don't sell out to The Man!

Wait- Salts from around the world? But- you actually can get various salts from different countries. They have slightly different minerals in them. A friend of mine had this odd pink salt she used occasionally from the far east (iirc).

Lol, reminds me of the last time I was in Home Depot. I was looking for a Monkey Wrench and for the life of me I couldn't find one.
So I asked for help, and the young erpson (maybe 21-22) looked at me strangely, led me to the aisle and said somewhat patronizingly "They're called pipe wrenches now, sir".
Not to be outdone, I held it aloft, thanked the person and said quite loudly "Now I can kill Col. Mustard in the conservatory!"
The helper minion didn't get the joke, but the old retired couple laughed very loudly :)

I used to read my horoscope in The Onion:
Sagittarius November 22 - December 21
Venus, the harbinger of love, will enter your sign this week. Unfortunately, so will busload after busload of obnoxious, sightseeing tourists, which kind of ruins the mood.
Your utter self-confidence and endless optimism will provide boundless, if temporary, comfort to those trapped with you in the burning bus.
You believed being stranded on that desert island put an end to your run of lousy luck, but the natives will soon become strangely inspired and fashion a crude bus to hit you with.
Your life expectancy will reach an all-time low this week when it somehow gets out that you're a good source of potassium, folic acid, and $245 in small bills.
You'll find it hard to live a normal life for the next couple months, during which it will suddenly and inexplicably become fashionable to jump motorcycles over you.
It's often hard to say goodbye, but that doesn't excuse your practice of throwing down a smoke bomb and escaping in the confusion.
When the aliens finally arrive, they'll be much less advanced than anyone expected, as evinced by your maiming under the bald tires of their out-of-control '79 Buick.
(I used to own a '79 Buick, it sucked.)
Scholars have decided that you probably don't exist at all, and are just a composite character based on several minor figures from the writings of George Sand.
You will be faced with the unenviable task of telling somebody that they have lost that loving feeling without breaking into song.
They say you never hear the shot that gets you, but thanks to the acoustics in your bathroom, you'll hear all 59 of them perfectly.
You should explore new conversational tactics. Trapping people in a pincer formation of battle tanks is proving socially awkward.
You don't use the airwaves, exactly, but the FCC will soon take a stand on what you can and can't say using public air.

If you get to taste them, you actually can tell a huge difference, and some go better with different dishes. Grey sea salt from Hawaii tastes totally different from the pink/red sea salt from long ago dried up seas in Utah, and there is this French Fleur de Sel that tastes almost sweet-salty....
They're much healthier for you than table salt, because the sodium content is way lower, and there are lots of trace minerals that are good, too.

Morton's probably has a sea salt by now. It's a good choice if you like the taste of salt without as much sodium.

Yeah it's actually very well done. The video is interesting. I know it was made just before Yugoslavia broke up. My interpretation - which could be wrong of course being slightly alcohol influenced- is that it's a warning about the resulting entities sliding into fascism. There are a few references to Slovenias national symbol - the deer, and the slightly hitler youth-esque boy scouts with their adams apples suggesting the idea of coming of age, the female face being drawn in the soil - the creation of a new national identity? And the Leni Reifenstahl style skiing shots...

The first time I heard I'd been nic jacked it was from either Private Bin Jammin or Pink Freud. They knew it wasn't me because it didn't "sound" like me. I would think the same of realwest, and you and the vast majority of the Lizards. After awhile of reading each other, we can pick up on things, and when another person tries to imitate us, it can be obvious.

I called him a flat out liar..A couple other lizards came to his defense...Unfortunately For them..I had to blow up the blog and all the dickhead liars over there..It wasn't pretty for them....Haven't been back since...But when the Hoopster calls out a whole blog it's not pretty...
I went to bed at 4am laughing my ass off...I'll bet Ace goes to bed every night thanking his lucky stars I never came back...
It got really ugly when somebody started calling AfroCity a N*gger at about midnight. That's when I got really pissed off...It's not my fault after that..

re: #290 Killgore Trout
The write is in legalese so someone better educated could refine my interpretation; It's about lobbyists and other people applying for stimulus funds. They can't go to a government office and talk to an official behind closed doors. They have to submit all communications in writing. All correspondence will the be published on the internet as a matter of public record.
This has nothing to do with dissent, freedom of speech and the 1st amendment. These scandals just get dumber and dumber. It's amazing that people keep falling for this shit. It's nonsense and they're only embarrassing themselves by appearing hysterical and stupid.
It's even narrower than that, his point two clarifies that it's specifically for the period between grant submission and potential award.
Business' have very similar things they do when they send requests for proposals (RFP's) out to multiple vendors. All conversations and meetings have to be on record and recorded. During that time you better not talk to any of the vendors in the RFP without someone from supply chain and legal on line with you and taking notes.

Maybe there needs to be a government agency that is the central nic authority, and every blog must subscribe, yeah, that's the ticket! And you have to buy a license for a nic, and pay a tax on every posted message, email, IM or tweet. Balance the friggin' budget overnight.

The restriction is on people who file a claim for stimulus money. They're not allowed to communicate with the person responsible for their claim unless they put it in writing, after the claim is filed but before the money is awarded. This is obviously intended to prevent corruption, and make sure that any claims for stimulus money are completely above board.

I can't say why the owner of a blog won't clean up abuse -- that's their problem. But I will say that I removed Ace from my blogroll and RSS feeds, after I saw the sheer disgusting hatred he was allowing to be posted, in attacks against me. I'm really disappointed in Ace -- I've thrown him a lot of links over the years, and helped him out when he had a disagreement with PJ Media, and he responded by allowing ugly, sick personal attacks on me at his blog.

If I remember my history correctly, this is how the Bolsheviks did it, also. They shouted down, talked over, or simply “removed” any objectors from the conversation. Gulags came later.Hitler’s way was far less subtitle: Use children as spies, and citizens fear to rat out those who think independently, then send them off to “re-education” camps, where few survived.

It's ridiculous, Charles. I've worked previously with inter-agency communications from state and federal agencies, and in the past, they even had to write letters to say "I got your letter". It's a total CYA clause on the part of the government. If they didn't have written communications as proof, they'd be liable at some point for any mistakes. Written communications protect them.

Even more so, having worked for the gov't in the past in a technical position, we (gov't) were never allowed to interface with a prospective contractor once they became a candidate for a contract, and during the contractual process, if a technical question arose, I had to only interface with the contracts/legal (gov't) people.
Only after the contract was awarded were the contractors and I able to meet/communicate.
If the Obama administration now wants to enforce that sort of contracting integrity at the very top levels of the political process (where frankly in the past it was way too often ignored), all the better IMO.
There is an area that is pretty gray regarding this whole matter... and that is with the lobbying of Congressmen themselves. The most effective means of steering money to a company is to work the Congressman in whose district some of the money will be spent; besides the direct (written) pork that comes out of this, there are indirect ways of Capitol Hill influencing contracting of gov't money.
That often turns into illegality though, as well illustrated by the Duke Cunningham scandal.

I'll be darned. I've met my first John Gault in the flesh.
Fellow retired from the Sheriff's department and opened this little catfish place a few miles away. He does alright; the place is open on Thursdays, Fridays, and Saturdays from 4:30 until 9:30 and the place is absolutely packed, with customers waiting in line from doors open till they refuse to seat anymore.
So this evening when we got there a note was tacked to the door saying they were from now on only going to be open Fridays and Saturdays. Fellow told me that he was 'paying all the damned taxes he was going to pay', and if it were not for his employees needing the work he'd just shut the doors altogether.

It was ridiculous. The 25 pct that's left of the base is locked in, and committed. The sad part is they can't recognize the red meat pep talk points you feed the base from the message. They think it's one and the same. It's sad that they can't recognize that the standard lowgrade TP you wipe the base's ass with rubs the voters we need to win back the wrong way...

I've read the linked post twice. I don't see anything that could be construed as "silencing criticism of the porkulus" unless someone was to misread a portion of it, deliberately or otherwise.
The bolded portions of the following:
Second, we will focus the restriction on oral communications to target the scenario where concerns about merit-based decision-making are greatest –after competitive grant applications are submitted and before awards are made. Once such applications are on file, the competition should be strictly on the merits. To that end, comments (unless initiated by an agency official) must be in writing and will be posted on the Internet for every American to see.
might possibly be wrongly interpreted to imply "restriction of criticism of stimulus appropriations" if one was of an alarmist nature or looking to deliberately misread it to mean such a thing.
I read it as saying that once a stimulus grant has been applied for and until the grant is awarded that oral communications are a no-no. This to prevent someone from saying (off the record) "If you make sure we get that stimulus grant there'll be a little something extra in your Christmas stocking this year."
