Tiller Murder Suspect Identified, Posted at Operation Rescue

The man arrested on suspicion of murdering Dr. George Tiller has been identified as Scott Roeder:

The gunman fled, but a 51-year-old suspect was detained some 170 miles away in suburban Kansas City three hours after the shooting, Wichita Deputy Police Chief Tom Stolz said.

Although Stolz refused to release the man’s name, Johnson County sheriff’s spokesman Tom Erickson identified the detained man as Scott Roeder. He has not been charged in the slaying and was expected to be taken to Wichita for questioning.

And Scott Roeder posted a creepy comment at the Operation Rescue website in 2007, in this topic about Dr. Tiller: Operation Rescue® » Pray in May to Stop Abortion, Wichita, KS, May 17-20, 2007:

Doesn’t seem like it would hurt anything but bring more attention to Tiller.

Possible Tiller Murder Suspect Identified

According to a Democratic Underground thread, a 1997 Militia Watchdog report put out by the Anti-Defamation League lists the following activity for July 7:

"July 7, Kansas: Scott Roeder is sentenced to sixteen months in state prison for parole violations following a 1996 conviction for having bomb components in his car trunk. Roeder, a sovereign citizen and tax protester, violated his parole by not filing tax returns or providing his social security number to his employer."

I searched the Kansas Department of Corrections website, and they have a listing for Scott Roeder, which matches the suspect description.

His full name is Scott Philip Roeder. He is 51 years old. Birthday is 25 February 1958. He is 6'-2" tall and weighs 230 lbs. He was convicted in 1996 in Shawnee County, Kansas for Criminal Use of Explosives.

According to records from the Kansas Secretary of State's office, and available on the Kansas VoterView website, he is a registered Republican in Shawnee, Kansas. According to the voter records, he last voted in 1994.

I used to be a sales manager. Interviewed a guy, he was fantastic (in the interview) and I hired him on the spot.

Well, I tried to hire him on the spot. Wouldn't give out social security number, or phone number (said he didn't have one) gave me a PO Box address, and just before I got sick of him and kicked him out, he used the term "Sovereign Citizen".

Still don't know what it means, but, it is creepy.

The local news here was reporting that these "late term" abortions are performed in cases where a baby has severe birth defects (like no brain, organs developed outside the body). I recall someone on Fox mentioning that Dr. Tiller had made a large donation to Gov. Sebelius' campaign. It is my opinion that O'Reilly will HONESTLY denounce the murder. I do not believe that O'Reilly would endorse violence. He has commended Obama when he did the right thing. He has criticized people when he thinks they do the wrong thing.

You might could find a judge that would issue a search warrent if you worded the request the right way, but simply issuing a blanket warrent isn't permitted.

I think this is doable, "Communications from X advocating or discussing crime Y" is pretty easy in this case.

I sorta agree. He is not criminally insane, just as Ted Kazinski wasn't criminally insane. He was however, nuts in the general sense of the word -- to an amazing extent. I used the term "around the bend" deliberately -- it has no legal definition and maybe not much of a definition of any kind. My point is I cannot fathom their thinking. Something is deeply, deeply amiss in this guy's thinking.

By the way, Zappa's point was that the mind is the ugliest part of ANYONE'S body.

Some local restauranteur has the bright idea of smoking his own hot dogs, tried the place the other day, and I guess the dogs are OK (presume not kosher!), but tiny dog is lost in the bun and "custom toppings". Need to get Chef Ramsay out there to advise them!

There are two restaurants in Bergen County that got the Ramsay treatment. We tried one after Ramsay got there (Campania) and hope to try the other one soon (Bazzini, which we've had before the Ramsay treatment). You're right about simplicity and clean taste.

In all seriousness, I'm really sad about what has happened in Wichita today.
First the murder...in church. A family is suffering, and an important member of the medical community is lost.
Then the craziness of the horrible comments celebrating the murder. Especially the ones at local news sites, many of which I'm sure were posted by members of my community.
I think about the future of the abortion debate, and there is little hope for a resolution with the ugliness I have seen today. Personally I think there is a compromise. And I thought that the issue was headed in that direction. After today I think I was mistaken, that most people are extremists of one side or the other. And this is an ugly fight that will continue for a very very long time.

still, 99.9% of the comments here are respectful to people of faith.

Just press shift-apple-3. You'll get a shot of your whole screen, saved to your desktop as "Picture 1.png", or "Picture 2.png" if it's the second one you've saved, etc.

If you only want to grab part of your screen, use shift-apple-4. Your cursor will change into a little crosshairs thingy, and you can drag it to make a rectangle that encloses whatever you want to grab.

Or, as another example, someone who tries to free prisoners at Treblinka or Auschwitz by shooting a guard. If I believe that abortion is murder, then how is violence against an abortion clinic materially different than violence against the slave trade or violence against a death camp? The slave trade and the death camp were both totally legal in that time and place, yet today we laud those who took action against them. Was John Brown a hero, or a villain? Even Obama spoke proudly of his Uncle’s role in stopping the carnage at Auschwitz.

Can you tell me where my two analogies are materially wrong?

Don’t get me wrong. I do not condone violence against abortion clinics. Amongst other things, such actions are counter-productive. They have created an emotional backlash that has caused the pro-life movement more harm than good. But, given the unrebutted analogies above, my objections are primarily on strategic rather than moral grounds. Are these people heroes for trying to save lives (like Bonheoffer in Germany), or villains for, well, putting their beliefs into action? Or are they something else - someone who believed the right things, but chose a foolish, unwise and ultimately counter-productive course of action to reach their goals?

Can you tell me where I am wrong in my appraisal?

I wish that more people who claim to be pro-life would think through their positions a bit more. Many people believe that abortion is murder, but don’t follow that belief to its logical conclusion as it interacts with the rest of their belief structure. Perhaps because the conclusions may be uncomfortably radical.

Once again, I do not support or encourage what happenned, but these are honest questions.

And imagine running a BBS on a Vic-20, one 154k disk drive, a Hayes 300 modem and A hand wired RS232 cable (because the Vic-20 RS232 wasn't the standard pinouts) and a 16k expanded memory cartridge, for a total of 19k ram.

I wrote the first Vic-20 BBS software, Called "The Softboard" and sold by Timeworks out of Chicago.

Alt-PrntScrn is also how I do it. PrntScrn will take a screen shot of your entire desktop. Holding down the alt key at the same time will take a screen shot of the active window.
Once you take the screen shot, it will be places in your windows clipboard (same as if you used the 'copy' function). Open up your favorite graphics program, hit paste, then save the file.

You have to hold the [ALT] while hitting the [PrntScrn], not one and then the other. If you are doing all of that, I don't know what the problem would be. Like I said, I tested it here and it worked.

The first video from Sully's site, the one with the girl who got an abortion at 14 is a bit bizarre... She blames the doctor for the abortion. Even though her parents were the ones who made the out-of-state arrangements for the procedure. Moreover, if I heard the girl correctly, she blames the abortion for her post-abortion promiscuity. Makes me wonder if she were brainwashed by some anti-abortion fanatic. Nothing she said made sense.

I agree that O'Reilly is in some way culpable, but I doubt there would be any case against him. From a similar case..

The U.S. Supreme Court reversed Brandenburg's conviction, holding that government cannot constitutionally punish abstract advocacy of force or law violation.

As for the obscene websites from the militant anti-abortion crowd advocating murder, I can't see why those are legal at all. Their whole purpose is to incite murder.

There is a bit of a difference between saying "I believe what this guy is doing is wrong and should be illegal" and saying "This guy murders babies! His office is a death mill!" one of those is a rational statement of opinion, the other is emotionally charged hyperbole. Whether you agree with or disagree with the opinion does not change that.

It would take another case to test the law..

As of 2009, the Brandenburg test is still the standard used for evaluating attempts to punish inflammatory speech, and it has not been seriously challenged since it was laid down in 1969. Very few cases have actually reached the Court during the past decades that would test the outer limits of Brandenburg, so the test remains largely unqualified.

Once you dehumanize or demonize your enemy it is then much easier to kill him. That is a basic reality of war.
Maybe religious zealots should keep this in mind as seem to demonize their religious enemies as a matter of course.

This was glossed over by the MSM during the election, and also in the recent Notre Dame fuss.

The President is about as extreme as he could possibly be on the abortion issue - but this is not generally perceived.

I was out and just got back; I was about to challenge a couple of people there (how could anyone quarrel with the way Charles has covered this?) when Allah shut things down.

A lot of people at HotAir are reasonable and rational, but I think there's been some cross-pollination from FreeRepublic during the last couple of open registrations. If you've read much of F/R, you can just tell. Just listen for the scrape, scrape, scrape of knuckles dragging.

The story of the Born Alive Infant Protection Act was greatly distorted. The facts are that the act was an attempt by anti-abortion groups to redefine the legal meaning of abortion, and increase the liability of doctors and hospitals who performed abortions. It was initiated by Jill Stanek and Rick Santorum, and Obama voted against it for that reason -- not because he "supports infanticide."

This is the first time I had seen any suggestion that the story about Obama's voting on what happens to babies who survive late-term abortion was "greatly distorted". All I read at the time was that Obama was in a minority of one in the Illinois legislature - which seemed to me to be an extreme position. I understood that the vote in question was going through "on the nod" - except for Obama.

how is the negative reporting that Bill Reilly did against Dr Tiller, any different than the negative reporting many with good conscience do against the people listed above?
IMO, what Dr tiller did was not right. I do not believe he had appropriate medical justification for every late term abortion he did. He was rightly criticized. Many people in the medical community think what he was doing was vile.
I've read the transcript of at least one of the segments O'Reilly did so I am familiar with the level of rhetoric he was using. Red meat for sure, but the nature of the topic and what Tiller was doing couldn't really be discussed in a non-inflammatory fashion.

there are nuts everywhere, so how far is going too far when it comes to those with a public voice, speaking out against acts they deem reprehensible? When is red meat, inciting violence ?

and furthermore, how far does the liability extend if a nut happens to harm one of the individuals who has received public criticism ?

These are discussions we need to have. When is it OK to criticize somebody, and how far is too much?
Nobody wants to see a person hurt as a result of criticizing them, but at the same time nobody wants to refrain from offering criticism when it's due.

There is no justification for what that Roeder guy did. Zero. Let me make that clear.

As to your question of why the president has "jumped in" with a statement on today's killing, I would suggest that a nationwide move to have federal marshals protect threatened clinics is a major event and he would be remiss in not pointing out its seriousness. Far from being "just a murder," this is apparently a hate crime and potentially puts anyone in the target group at risk. Which, to my mind, is why the hate crime designation is theoretically valid: the possible fallout to others. Just my two cents.

If you're metaphorically speaking, like "Something is rotten in the state of Denmark" which is not a condemnation of Denmark itself, but the events within, I agree. Things wrong in Kansas, yes. Things are wrong in all fifty states, and with each news day the headlines tell how wrong things are going. I won't ask "What's the matter with Kansas?" because I think there is a difference in saying a whole state and its people are out to lunch.

Because this is not a typical murder. The motive was based upon opposition to abortion, not drugs or money, or some personal relationship. It is a politically based murder.

While the last thing I want to do is defend Obama's voting record in the Illinois senate, that couldn't be further from the truth. The vote on the 2003 Born Alive Infant Act was 6 against (Obama being one of the 6) and 4 in favor. When the bill came up again in 2005, Obama had ... moved on.

This is exactly why the topic of abortion should never be part of a national political debate. Chances are that one's opinions on the matter are seated in their faith. Faith is not subject to logical discussion ... it is a matter of faith in a belief. You can not have a debate when you have individuals in the discussion who hold a position that isn't based on a conclusion of logic. As a result, there will not really be any debate but you end up with circular conversations and both sides talking at each other. Persuasion has no role in matters of faith.

American communities run the spectrum of cultural values. In questions such as abortion you have a situation where whichever side gains power in Washington will alienate and sow resentment among the other side. It is divisive. The best approach is to get the discussion out of national politics altogether. You allow the various communities to enact laws that reflect their values. If San Francisco wants to allow it and Wichita wants to outlaw it, fine. The laws of the communities should reflect the values of those communities. Neither community should fear any political party coming to power in Washington and shoving a social agenda down their throat. You take the questions like this down to the lowest possible level of government as is practical.

Everyone should be able to find a community in this country that reflects their social falues without interference from other communities. And it would help if people could mind their own business and keep their nose in their own community and quit sticking it into the affairs of other communities with different values.

After the lese-majeste by Gordon Brown and Sarkozy (no blame lies at Obama's door) in failing to invite HM The Queen to the D-Day memorial ceremonies on 6 June, I would give even odds that she will turn up on the day. Unlike the others, she was around at the time, remembers the Blitz, and remains the head of the UK armed forces.

The Prime Minister of Canada should be there also.

It is a great shame that the few remaining vets who can travel to Normandy next weekend will be kept away from the beaches, for security reasons. Maybe after the "Great and the Good" have done their stuff, the vets will have time to go mourn their lost comrades.

As to "distortion" - I followed a lot of commentary about Obama's voting on infants who survive late-term abortions. I had not seen any suggestion at the time that his position was "distorted". All I saw at the time was that he was in a minority of one in the Illinois legislature.

You keep repeating this completely false claim so, for the record, no, Obama was actually in the majority on the vote of his committee on this issue, and for very good reasons (it is with respect to the reasons that the distortion part comes in).

Your sources are wrong and probably deliberately so.

OMG, I just read the whole comment you linked. The writer actually compares this breaking of the law by Tiller's murderer to Rosa Park's breaking of the law by her bus ride!

All I recall at the time was the general accusation that Obama had taken an extreme position. I do not recall any refutations of this sense.

I did a quick Google search on "Obama Infant Protection Act".

The first hits recounting the voting record seem to leave Obama in a confused position. Neither as clear-cut as I had said - nor as clear-cut as you have said. (Yes, two of the top links are from the nurse who was interviewed on TV about the matter).

At the time I do not recall seeing any definitive commentary that cleared Obama of the accusation that he looked more extreme than other Democrats.

Tillers murderer is nothing more than a common criminal wrapping himself up in religion for the self support he needed to do this. Tiller was making a killing (no pun intended) money wise doing these abortions. I see neither as deserving the attention they are getting.

It was terrorism, pure and simple. Very wrong and no one who loves the things that make this country great can support.

One thing to oppose the guy and his actions..quite another to make it personal. If you support the right to life, you do not kill innocents yourself.

I cant see it any other way.
