US News • Views: 5,107

There’s been a fatal shooting at a recruiting office in Little Rock, Arkansas: Military recruiter killed in Ark shooting.

LITTLE ROCK, Ark. (AP) — Police in Arkansas say a military recruiter has been killed in a shooting at an Army-Navy recruiting office in Little Rock and a second recruiter has been wounded.

Little Rock police Lt. Terry Hastings said one recruiter was fatally wounded when a man inside a black SUV fired shots at the office in west Little Rock at about 10:30 a.m.

The SUV was stopped on a highway a short time later and a suspect was taken into custody.

Not much more information yet.

Absolutely disgusting.

If the shooter's motiviation turns out to be anything along the lines of "left-wing retaliation on a 'right-wing' target for the murder of Tiller", this could get really, really nasty.

Of course, we don't know that yet, and I sure hope this just turns out to be some nut who thinks the military is controlling his mind with x-rays or something.

What is it recently with the loons shooting people? Is there a fricking full moon out?

4 JohnnyReb  Mon, Jun 1, 2009 11:47:54am

Apparently the two shot has just finished boot camp and had come back home according to the AP, they were not recruiters. They were on the Home town recruiting program. Sad.

May the wounded recruiter recover completely and quickly; may the family of the murdered recruiter find comfort; and may the murderer receive justice.

Maybe Code Pink influenced him. You know, the same way the right wing media is responsbile for Tiller's death (according to Kos and DU.)

Kids out of boot camp can volunteer for a two week stint at the recruitment center as a way of extending their leave before further training. It works well especially if the kids get out at high school graduation time.

There used to be a program in the Navy when I was in that allowed for sailors to take leave after boot camp to go home and do a HS speech or two for reimbursement on travel expenses.

Over the past few years we have seen attacks on military personnel from crazed anti-war lunatics. It's possible but I think it's a little too early to try making political gains from the shooting.

20 KingKenrod  Mon, Jun 1, 2009 11:53:17am

Military recruiting stations have been the target of violence several times over the past few years. There was a small bomb that went off at a recruiting station in NYC a few weeks ago, and I remember a Denver shooting a few years ago. There was also widespread vandalism in 2008 during the 5 year anniversary of the start of the Iraq war.

21 lawhawk  Mon, Jun 1, 2009 11:53:41am

More information:

Hastings said a little after noon that investigators had not yet questioned the suspect. Police were still at the recruiting office
processing evidence from the crime scene.

Hastings said he did not know whether the recruiting office was specifically targeted by the attacker or randomly chosen.

Neither the victims nor suspects were named by authorities.

According to Army Lt. Col. Thomas F. Artis, the two victims were not recruiters, but part of a recruiting program called "Hometown Recruiting Assistance." Artis says recruiters use soldiers to tell their stories and talk to potential recruits while they are visiting or based back in their home region.

Somehow, Killgore, I don't think that's the case here. Such folks tend to take their ire out on law enforcement, the FBI, ATF, etc, not the military.

As for SJS, no, I don't think so either. There have been plenty of cases where some far left-wing anti-war nut has gone on a rampage against the military. Shoot, there are enough Kossack-types out there pissed off at Obama for staying in Iraq and Afghanistan.

Yes, the local channel there is reporting the same thing. One quote:

Artis says recruiters use soldiers to tell their stories and talk to potential recruits while they are visiting or based back in their home region.

Perhaps these were recruits as AP reports. If these young men were back home from tours overseas, finally out of harm's way, if only for a short time - it would be tragic....

Hi quickjustice! Yes, I can agree on the 48 hour rule with respect to motivation. But I think I'll skip it on one issue: anyone who, whenever, wherever, under any circumstances, for whatever reason, opens fire on the young men and women who have the dedication to volunteer to serve this country...

deserves to be prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law, and punished accordingly.

And, yes, I am in favor of the death penalty if it applies.

OT: Obama wants to sell B-2 plans to China!

The Defense Department is reportedly furious with the President's proposal to sell blueprints of the B-2 Spirit stealth bomber to the People's Republic. Gates has flatly rejected the President's plan, but has since been asked to step down if he will not facilitate the process.

According to the deal, the United States would sell the plans for the B-2, along with radar-absorbing paints and metals in exchange for $50 billion in debt relief. The B-2 cost the US government $23 billion to develop the bomber in the 1980s.

American allies Taiwan, Japan, and South Korea are very wary of the proposal. Koo Syi, a geopolitical analyst from South Korea, points out that this technology could be passed to China's allies. This was the case when Chinese nuclear technology was transferred to Pakistan and North Korea. According to Koo, Obama has rendered US allies' opinions as "irrelevant."

Every morning I wake up and Obama is out-stupiding himself.

Dick Cheney comments on gay marriage:

Speaking at the National Press Club for the Gerald R. Ford Foundation journalism awards, Cheney was asked about recent rulings and legislative action in Iowa and elsewhere that allowed for gay couples to legally wed.

"I think that freedom means freedom for everyone," replied the former V.P. "As many of you know, one of my daughters is gay and it is something we have lived with for a long time in our family. I think people ought to be free to enter into any kind of union they wish. Any kind of arrangement they wish. The question of whether or not there ought to be a federal statute to protect this, I don't support. I do believe that the historically the way marriage has been regulated is at the state level. It has always been a state issue and I think that is the way it ought to be handled, on a state-by-state basis. ... But I don't have any problem with that. People ought to get a shot at that."

There have been shoot outs between left wing groups and the police in the past as well as people being gunned down. Depends really on the level of confrontation the perpetrators are willing go to direct confrontation and the tactics they adopt. Symbionese Liberation Army being the prime example for their use of firearms.

I remember the SLA having shoot outs robbing banks etc, but if I remember correctly they favored bombs. This is a new day, so this could be an anti war statement. We'll see.

Read about this in the morning. It will be interesting to hear about the possible motivation(s) behind this shooting in light of yesterdays events and those that have occurred this year.

On a crime related note I read that Chicago had seven (7) shooting deaths within a 24 hour period during the weekend.

We had a teen riot here in Philly last night, where the perps planned their rampage out on social network sites.

OT, but a must-read from the No. Really? File:

Government's Role in GM Bears Resemblance to Amtrak Route

From the article:

Analysts said the government's hope of creating an efficient mass transit service through a partial nationalization of the rail system was stymied by its inability to get tough on unions and rein in labor costs. The same could hold true as the current administration deals with the UAW.

Amtrak has fielded criticism over the years for being guided by officials with little or no transit experience. Today, Obama's Auto Task Force has a combined experience of zero years in the auto industry.

With Amtrak, the government also got too involved in decision-making, leading to inefficiencies in the system that would never be corrected, say analysts. Since its creation in 1970, Amtrak has sucked up $30 billion in taxpayer money, and the money is still flowing. The original aid package from Congress in 1970 was $340 million with an expectation the railroad would make a profit in five years.

No? Really?

It's satire. Telling, that it's nearly impossible to differentiate between satire and sincerity lately, I think.

I guess one thing that made it harder in this case is that it was pretty lame satire. The authors need to get Scott Ott or Iowahawk to give them a seminar!

At Heritage Foundation, Romney raps Obama’s ’tour of apology’

Republican Mitt Romney, seen as a likely contender for the White House in 2012, scolded President Barack Obama today for apologizing to America’s critics in the global arena.

"I take issue with President Obama’s recent tour of apology," Romney said. "It’s not because America hasn’t made mistakes — we have — but because America’s mistakes are overwhelmed by what America has meant to the hopes and aspirations of people throughout the world."
....
"The president also claimed on Arabic TV that America has dictated to other nations," Romney said. "No, America has sacrificed to free nations from dictators."
....
"Arrogant, delusional tyrants can’t be stopped by earnest words and furrowed brows," he said. "Action, strong bold action coming from a position of strength and determination, is the only effective deterrent."

Now for a somewhat happier story:

MOBILE, Ala. — A Navy casualty affairs officer is scheduled to arrive at Elizabeth Huff’s Birmingham-area home at 10 a.m. Thursday to officially notify her of her grandfather’s death.

She’s known about it all her life.

Lt. Woodie Lackland McVay Jr., a Mobile native, has been dead for more than 65 years, shot down over the Pacific Ocean during World War II.

[Link: www.navytimes.com...]

Huff said she is proud to finally have the opportunity to bury her grandfather, with the full military honors he has always deserved.

After all, according to Darcy, McVay is still wearing his uniform.

207 razorbacker  Mon, Jun 1, 2009 12:38:11pm

Everything that follows is supposition, conjecture, and speculation. You have been warned.

The soldiers shot were not regular recruiters, but local folks in the Army participating in recruitment. They tell people about the opportunities and benefits of Army life compared to what they formerly had.

There is some bad 'gang' activity in Little Rock. Tensions between the old time residents and the newer Hispanic residents have flared several times into shootings and mini-riots, but the old gang tensions are still there, too.

The suspected shooter doesn't look to be in any kind of shape to have been a recently returned serviceman.

No-one heard Allah Akbar to my knowledge.

My first impulse is to think that there may well have been a previous beef with the soldiers before they joined, and this is the first time the suspected shooter has had an opportunity to exact revenge.

Sometimes a murder is just a murder. Doesn't make it any better for the folks involved, but there you are.

Everything is an assault weapon if you commit assault with it. No doubt, though, if this dued had a semi-automatic rifle we will hear about it loudly. Unless he is a Black Muslim. Then, as I said before, the story will dissappear. IIRC, John Mohammed used an AR-15. One of the funky ones that wouldn't take any magazine, again, IIRC. It didn't get much play.

by accepted definition amongst those who actually know about weapons, an assault rifle is one that is chambered for an intermediate cartridge, which is larger than a pistol round, but smaller than a full sized rifle one, and is capable of both full/burst fire and semiautomatic fire.

any weapon that can only fire semi is a plain old rifle, no matter whai ti looks like.

I hold your hand in mine, dear,
I press it to my lips.
I take a healthy bite
From your dainty fingertips.

My joy would be complete, dear,
If you were only here,
But still I keep your hand
As a precious souvenir.

The night you died I cut it off.
I really don't know why.
For now each time I kiss it

This will be my last word on the topic. Like I said, I've been through this a few times before. There's no reason to turn this into a thread about me, it's boring for people who want to discuss the story about the shooting. My innocuous response to your question only seems to fuel your obsession with me. I've found that the best way to deal with this is to ignore the person. This will reduce the chances of you getting banned or making a dramatic exit from LGF. Your posts in the past about civil unrest and armed rebellion (even after Charles told you to stop) lead me to believe that maybe you have some problems. Guess what? The two soldiers who were on the recieveing end of the bullets could very well have been black as well.

/Pending notification of family, etc.

Since they are all probably from AR, it was a 50/50 shot (no pun intended)

However, I would guess that of the 7 full time military recruiters, 1 civilian office person, and the 2 guys getting 'recruiters duty,' there were probably only 3-5 people actually in the office when this went down. The two new guys, the civilian and one staff seargent who was probably in the back room. The two boot campers were probably standing up, in the front of the building, possibly putting up window signs etc. Therefore, it will probably be a minimum month before any true motivation is found unless the perp talks and even then they will need at least a week or two to verify the story and timeline.

Really. I find SQL to be a kludgy, back-asswad way of querying a table. And then they tried to add transactional functionality and then tried to wrap procedural languages around it (ie: Pl/SQL) and you have a very badly structured programming language.

But then again, maybe that's because I was trained on "plain english" styled procedural languages, like COBOL, BASIC, DBASE and all it's flavors up to Visual FoxPro, all languages which are much more readable and teachable.

And yes, up to my unscheduled career change a few years ago, SQL and SQL based procedural languages were what I made my living using. Never really liked them.

Another language, originally written as a simple query language for end users, RPG, become another nightmare when they tried to add procedural functionality.

SQL, what it has become, is not so widely used because it is so simple and easy, it's because they is a legacy base of SQL floating around, and certain companies (like Oracle) has gotten bigger than the base language itself. So, it stays.

re: #308 Walter L. Newton

IMHO.

It's a geek thread...Walter throws down!

That isn't the same as full auto. It doesn't even have the same rate of fire. It makes a lot of noise and wastes a lot of ammo (you can't really aim much and have it work), but little else.

If you want to do it that way you can just relax your shooting grip just right and the slight recoil will cause the trigger to 'jump' back into your finger, giving the appearance of a three-round burst and causing your bother-in-law to curse you for wasting his ammo and heating up his barrel.

This happened to me in Basic--although I had a ton of experience shooting prior to enlistment,it was pretty disconcerting. At least I had the presence of mind to keep the weapon pointed downrange.

Run aways are always a possible hazard with automatic rifles regardless of make and function. The usual fault being worn out or faulty parts in the trigger group with the other being an over heated weapon cooking off ammunition in the chamber. Never experienced it personally.

That depends on what percentage of total income they make. If they make 3% of the total income, then paying 3% of the income tax isn't so bad.

Hi Walter!

But, that's why Oracle has always been "slow." You build a SQL select, that has so many conditions, joins and function calls, the server still has to break it down into the steps, and that adds to the time slices on the server.

Oracle's answer to speed has always been, buy bigger processors. A lot of that has to do with PL/SQL. And if you have ever seen what's actually behind those forms, it's a whole DIFFERENT language, more akin to what was behind the early Oracle forms/reports.

Procedural languages like I mentioned (and add ADA to that), allow you much more control over the logic flow, how you slice it, how you pass it to the processor, how you tweak it, and so on. And in the end, much more readable and documentable.

(2) Income tax after credits (the tax measure above) does not account for the refundable portion of EITC. If it were included (as is often the case with other organizations), the tax share of the top income groups would be higher. The refundable portion is legally classified as a spending program by the Office of Management and Budget and therefore is not included by the IRS in these figures.

re: #413 Dave the.....

We'll be there under Obama. And that is horrible. Now 51% of working Americans will get free stuff from the gov't with minimal pay-in. They have no stake in reduced gov't spending/taxing. They have voted themselves money from the Treasury. The solution is for everyone to contribute, but what politician is going to win elections telling people that they are going to have to start paying some taxes?

Remember Paul Tsongas? His "I am not Santa Claus" killed him in the primaries.

A few years ago I would have guessed it was a leftist or sudden jihad syndrome. Sadly we can now put anti-government libertarian into the mix of possible motives.

It was a drive-by from black SUV with tinted windows. Assault rifle was recovered.

The men who were shot were part of a "hometown recruiter assistance program". So, they were from
Little Rock.

This says "Gang Activity" to me. The fact that they
were soldiers likely had nothing to do with the shooting.
What they were before they were soldiers is probably more relevant

The left, of some of the right, have created generations of entitlement mentality.

Is this a call for volunteers? Or do you propose a draft?

To continue the sick, under the circumstances, recruiting analogy, I'm leaning toward the LIT shooting being personal or gang related. Time will tell.

Random thoughts -

Good suggestion up thread. Modify to make a WTF button for things like the B2 link.

To pick up on the profit meme, the story would have rung everyone's satire bell if, in the bottom third of the story, there had been a quote from Nancy Pelosi to the effect that Obama's attempt to turn a profit on the B-2 plans was not in keeping with the finest traditions of the Democratic Party. She did support the suggestion however because it was just not fair that the US have something that it wasn't willing to share. "I mean secrets are just so 'possessive'. I don't call that progressive"

Besides, everyone knows that Obama handed over the B-2 plans to SA. When he made that deep bow to the King, he was actually laying the microfilm with the plans at the feet of Abdullah in gratitude for financing his college education. So, cash, in some fashion, at some time, did change hands.

OT: Obama wants to sell B-2 plans to China!

Every morning I wake up and Obama is out-stupiding himself.

But it would be evil and mean-spirited to want Obama to fail.

Let's give China the state of California

I see the B2 story is being broken wide open by a grand total of 2 blogs....

Must be true!
