N. Korea Missile ‘Designed to Reach US’

World • Views: 2,873

Today’s very bad news from the Korean hot zone: NKorea readies long-range missile test.

SEOUL, South Korea – North Korea appears to be preparing to test an advanced missile designed to reach the United States, a U.S. official said Monday, ratcheting up tensions after its second underground nuclear test.

The reclusive communist country also reportedly bolstered its defenses and conducted amphibious assault exercises along its western shore, near disputed waters where deadly naval clashes with the South have occurred in the past decade.

Given Kim's comments the other day about the 1953 truce, this is not a good thing. We should take the little twerp seriously and put a stop to this crappola.

Let's hope "designed to" and "capable of" are two very different things.

North Korea's behavior in recent weeks really does seem to be going beyond its usual "I'm completely insane... but you can bribe me to be a little quieter" bombast. Things could get very bad, very soon.

Here, from the article:

The missile being prepared for launch was believed to be an intercontinental ballistic missile with a range of up to 4,000 miles (6,500 kilometers), the JoongAng Ilbo newspaper reported, citing an unnamed South Korean official.

That distance would put Alaska and U.S. bases on the Pacific island of Guam — along with all of Japan — within striking range.

Math is not part of this calculus (as in the greater number of US nukes on board a single US strategic missile sub or the nuclear tipped-Tomahawk cruise missiles on board the attack subs). It's all about extortion and threats, and Obama isn't a poker player. Or much of a chess player either. L'il Kim is looking to bluff his way to his goals, which he's not making clear although it likely includes affecting possible reunification talks. He's hoping that the US will back down and give him more aid and money, while the regime continues to do nothing to deserve it.

Again, my prediction: We're witnessing the morbid thrashings of a dying dictator.

His underlings have to keep him happy for now, with missile launches and underground explosive tests that barely make it to the Hiroshima level.

Underground explosions are not the same as deliverable weapons, not even as bombs, much less as missiles.

Kim III will last five minutes in power when Dear Leader goes to meet his maker, and then there'll be a coup with a colonel or a junta in charge.

The junta will want to go on breathing and won't care so much about cults of personality, since to be in power at all for so long has meant tamping down their own personalities to the point of invisibility.

They will want three things: continued support from China, rapprochement and trade with SK, and recognition by the US.

To get them, they will sign deals.

The North will open up to the South to such an extent that there will be a Berlin Wall effect. Sooner rather than later.

China will accept a unified Korea for trade reasons alone.

We'll have to get our apocolyptogasms elsewhere in the near future.

Signed and witnessed this day of June the First, anno domini MMIX.

Whew -- when I see "designed to reach the U.S.," I'm thinkin' Seattle or San Francisco. Not quite as serious as I first imagined, but still not good -- especially if you live on Guam or the Aleutians.

Yep, that OBama quote in context was that they are a tiny threat compared to China and Russia that we've lived with for decades. We could bounce rubble in Korea with one boomer sub.
You want worries, the Cuban missile crisis was scary. Korea is a pimple on the worlds ass that we'll need to pop at some point, but there is time, maybe 5 years or less to be safe.

Unfortunately, you can't stack TNT on top of a missile
and create a fake nuclear explosion, as you can underground.

Once they do get a working bomb, coming up with a working nuclear warhead and attaching it to a missile
is far more complicated than it sounds.

As for them being crazy? Crazy for atttention and relevance maybe. Not crazy for self destruction.

Far too much hysteria over it, at this point.

A bully that still has tens of thousands artillery tubes aimed at our ally's capital city of Seoul. That's the ever present threat. I've argued previously that the nuclear threat isn't much of a threat now. We've known about it for some time, and acting as though it is more of a threat now makes little sense.

Containment is the best option as I see it - preventing further proliferation.

Stationing missile defense boats makes sense as well. PSI needs a vigorous enforcement operation in place (outside the UN and IAEA which have been worse than useless in these situations).

Also, I've wondered whether ignoring the problem might make it go away.

In other words, it's the same old shit Kimmy has been pulling - successfully - for decades now. He's just introducing his third American Administration to it.

The US should simply walk away from this petty tyrant and ignore him. He is desperate for more US aid - we're the only ones who ever pony any up - and we need to make it clear that it won't be forthcoming under any sort of threat. Kimmy is certainly crazy, but he isn't stupid; he isn't going to lob anything at us and start a war that will last all of ten minutes, with him on the losing end. He'll escalate for a while longer, then sulk off into another one of his prolonged pouts.

Let China deal with him. He's much more their problem than ours at the moment.

As for them being crazy? Crazy for atttention and relevance maybe. Not crazy for self destruction.

The main problem is how people in the U.S., including our policy-makers, "analyze" the "psychology" of North Korea as if it was an individual -- a petulant, demanding little toddler who has grabbed daddy's pistol as is stomping around the house throwing a tantrum.

This wrong-headed framework for our dealings with North Korea, in which we see its actions as "a cry for help" or "trying to increase its bargaining power" or "just wanting a bit of attention on the world stage" is why we have not successfully dealt with them yet.

North Korea is not an individual, and it does not have the "psychology" of an individual. International relations is not a therapy session for manic-depressive nations.

We have to assume that everything they do is serious, and every statement they make must be taken at face value. And once we do that, we realize this is not a game anymore -- we need to neutralize them, and now.

Not only do I not care what the psychology of North Korea is, I think that's a fundamentally flawed way to approach our relationship with them.

You threaten us? You build nukes and ICBMs? That's it. Playtime is over.

Time for North Korea to go beddy-bye.

The Norks, from what we can tell have standing go orders if we try or succeed in a decap strike.

The have programmed targets and attack plans, the are positively held back, if their hold orders aren't' renewed or they lose comms with HQ they are supposed to launch.

It is the initial artillery and missile barrage the North could mount that would inflict the most causalities. After that, it would the destruction of the NK Airforce, Navy and then Army. If Kimmy wanted a war with the US, he wouldn't be dicking around building long-range ICBMs. All he has to do is order a march on South Korea, and our troops stationed there will trigger our mutual defense obligations instantly. We have extensive treaty obligations with South Korea to come to their aid in just such event. He could accomplish much the same thing, for similar reasons, by attacking Japan.

He knows this. A war would be easy to bring about. He doesn't want a war; he wants cash. Our official response to his latest tantrum ought to be "Sorry, did you hear something?" followed by continuing the conversation with whoever we were talking to.

If N Korea is going to test a long range ICBM, it is only for one reason. They don't need a long range ICBM to hit S Korea or Japan. They don't have a space program . It's to hit US here in the USA. Shoot the dam thing outa the sky.

You may be denying NK of their inalienable right to have their own manned space program. This could be a peaceful rocket they are building in their quest to colonize Mars.

OT - but maybe we need a little humor...

Sacha Baron Cohen at the MTV awards and his unique entrance as his character Bruno...

The rapper was left fuming when Cohen - as his flamboyant fashionista alter-ego Bruno - descended from above dressed as an angel in a thong and landed head first right in his lap.

As he was lowered down, he appeared to get into difficulties, spinning upside down as he wailed: 'Argh, scheisse! Argh! My kugelsack! My kugelsack!

'The wire is trapped round! Help me! Let me down! One of the wires is trapped around my kugelsack!.

Not to jump up and down like blogmonkeys or armchair strategists and call for actions that could only make things worse.

One of the things we may have learned from the Chinese (I hope) is to play the long game.

Our air war would be murder. On a wholesale level. Seoul would be fucked (the Norks have a lot of artilery), but we would own the skies completely. Does North Korea even have an air force? According to Wiki they do, but they are barely feeding their pilots. expecting them to go up against the US would be suicide as surely as though they'd put a shotgun in their mouth and pulled the trigger.

The pride of US power is of no effect with this administration. I've read some comments in this thread that make sense. Show US power to the aggressors. Sadly, it ain't gonna happen with Obamaness as Commander in Chief.

Nope, realistic assessments of the risk.

1. Do they have a delivery system ?
2. Have they learned to downsize a warhead.
3. Can they fit a war head to the missile and guide it to the target.

So far they don't have even have number 1.
Given the limited optioned that don't risk a attack on South Korea, we'll wait a bit.

They could always stick it in a shipping container and send it over on a slow boat. It wouldnt be as destructive at sea level in a harbor, but in the port of Los Angeles or elsewhere on the west coast it would be a horror.

And of course they might sell it to one of their friends who don't like us very much and let them do the shipping.

[Link: www.dailymail.co.uk...]

Walter, I saw that.
He landed with his near-naked behind right in the guy's face.
It was nasty, imo.

Something I don't know, and can't really find:

Does NK have chem weapons?

North Korea’s chemical warfare program is believed to be mature and includes the capability, since 1989, to indigenously produce bulk quantities of nerve, blister, choking and blood chemical agents as well as a variety of different filled munitions systems. North Korea is believed to possess a sizable stockpile of chemical weapons, which could be employed in offensive military operations against the South. North Korea has also devoted considerable scarce resources to defensive measures aimed at protecting its civilian population and military forces from the effects of chemical weapons. Such measures include extensive training in the use of protective masks, suits, detectors, and decontamination systems. Though these measures are ostensibly focused on a perceived threat from U.S. and South Korean forces, they could also support the offensive use of chemical weapons by the North during combat. North Korea has yet to sign the Chemical Weapons Convention (CWC) and is not expected to do so in the near-term, due to intrusive inspection and verification requirements mandated by the agreement.

Indeed. My parents weren't trendy people, but they had fiberglass curtains with a groovy geometric pattern in brown, tan, and burnt orange on a cream background. Our appliances were basic white and our carpet was decidedly non-shag because the house was built and decorated in 1959. A look at North Korea's missile arsenal:

_ ADVANCED TAEPODONG-2: Under development. Potential range of about 5,000 miles (8,000 kilometers), putting the U.S. west coast, Hawaii, Australia and eastern Europe within striking distance. re: #345 lobo91

The Trabant was the pride of the Soviet bloc...

Actually, it was the joke of the Soviet Bloc. Even they knew the Trabant had outlived its usefulness.

The Trabant was actually based on a pre-WWII design by a German company, DKW (part of the Auto Union). DKW itself was a pioneer in small front-wheel drive cars with tranversely mounted engines (this should sound familiar since most cars today are this format). When Germany was split after the war, DKW got stuck with factories on both sides of the line. The eastern ones were nationalized and became the production center for the Trabant. For the time period (mid-late 1950s), the Trabant actually was a fairly advanced car. It was front wheel drive, had a transversely mounted engine mounted directly over the drive wheels, unibody construction, Duroplast body panels (not cardboard), and an independent suspension. The one major drawback was the two-stroke engine. DKW built similar vehicles (substituting steel for Duroplast) in the west until Auto Union was taken over by WV in the 1960s (hence why Audi is part of VW).

BTW, as an aside, Germany did not need a people's car when the VW came out in the late 1930s. It already had one with the more modern FWD DKWs. VW (aka KDF Wagen) was more propaganda than substance.

Yeah, China likely has spies and agents all over North Korea, each ready to put a bullet in Kim's ear at the first order. a nuclear explosion cannot be faked

There was debate as to whether NK's first "nuclear test"
was actually nuclear, at all. The yeild was calculated
to be less than 1 kiloton. You can easily manage that
with conventional explosives.

The U.S. government has gone back and forth as to whether not any radiation was sampled in the area
after the test.

The realistic yield estimates for the 2009 test were
2-5 kilotons. Air sampling for radiation was "inconclusive".

We've "faked" them ourselves for testing purposes.

Wow, how strange. I've never been there and don't have any desire to go. Aside Mecca there's nothing interesting there that I want to see and that city's off limits to infidels.

It was a regular Lufthansa flight to Ethiopia where a stopover was scheduled in Saudi. The return flight had it's stopover in Cairo.
Very strange vibes there in Saudi I tells ya.

A look at North Korea's missile arsenal:

This missile would be within range of Hawaii at 4,715 miles.

Assuming it doesn't blow up on the launch pad, or fall into the Pacific.

Why? Those things were terrible.
BTW, when we were looking for a car years ago, we tried to test drive a used Pacer. It would only go in reverse. The salesman was quite embarrassed.
We bought a 1979 Buick Skylark (basically a Nova with a V-6) with 25,000 miles on it, and it lasted us years.

They probably wouldn't let me off the plane, and I'd have to hide in the lavatory while they searched. I don't know where I'd put my siddur (Jewish prayerbook) and tefillin (boxes containing parchment scrolls of certain Torah passages worn during morning prayers).

re: #412 Hawaii69

There was debate as to whether NK's first "nuclear test"
was actually nuclear, at all. The yeild was calculated
to be less than 1 kiloton. You can easily manage that
with conventional explosives.

The U.S. government has gone back and forth as to whether not any radiation was sampled in the area
after the test.

The realistic yield estimates for the 2009 test were
2-5 kilotons. Air sampling for radiation was "inconclusive".

We've "faked" them ourselves for testing purposes.

[Link: www.globalsecurity.org...]

Simulated is not faked. The near shock wave effect for large conventional explosion can be used to study the shock wave at greater distances for nuclear explosions.

A nuclear explosion has seismic signature which is not the same as a large conventional explosion.

Mine was a 70. Jeeze, no a/c. Three speed on the column. You had to go as fast as you could with the windows down and the vents open to keep from sticking to the vinyl seats.

Right of way goes to the car with the windows down!

Let's see now. Cars I have owned in some kind of chronological order.

Ahem.

'54 Chevy Belair
'59 T-Bird
'64 T-Bird
'67 Cougar
'67 VW
'64 Valiant
'65 Skylark
'68 Kadett
'63 Jag XKE
'67 Cutlass
'72 Toronado
'86 Impala wagon
'78 RX-3SP
'65 Impala SS
'67 Cutlass convertible
'88 Celica GT-S
'90 Cherokee
'85 Grand AM
'97 Ranger
'92 Marquis
'01 Cherokee
'05 Crown Vic

That doesn't count the company cars, a procession of full-sized vans, station wagons, then Marquis' and Pontiacs.

Looking at that, I know I'm forgetting some.

Charles, something very 'not good' is going on here:
Obama okays Longbow helicopters for Egypt

The article refers to another story(same publisher) that the Obama Admin has, at least, temporarily blocked the sale of six Longbow's to the Israeli's on concerns they'd be used against the Pal's - the Obama/the Admin has done just that.

That story has been debunked. Worldtribune.com is not a credible source for news.

Charles, I actually do not consider WorldTribune a credible source but with this story could you point me to a debunking?

I'm more bothered with the Admin holding up the sales - if that is indeed the case.

Maverick owner here, too. Sort of a bizarre burnt-orange brownish color. What was with those weird colors? What were we thinking? (I was thinking of how to make that steep monthly payment of $43.07. Why I remember the exact amount for that, and no other car, is a mystery...)

Don't think for a minute that NK will suddenly change when the elder Kim keels over. They were bad off (maybe worse) when his poppa kicked it and most of them cried in the streets. They're brainwashed into thinking these guys are god-like. The oldest son is a bit of a fruit so Kim passes to son #2, shockingly named Kim, and they keep being nutjob hermits for a while. They've been starving for a great long while. It's so bad they lowered the mimimal height requirement for soldiers to be conscripted several years ago, simply due to a shrinking trend caused by malnutrition.
