US News • Views: 3,692

A suspect has been arrested in the Arkansas recruiting center shooting:

(CNN) — An Arkansas man was arrested Monday in connection with a shooting at a Little Rock military recruiting center that killed one soldier and wounded another, authorities said.

Abdulhakim Mujahid Muhammad — a 24-year-old Little Rock resident formerly known as Carlos Bledsoe — faces a first-degree murder charge and 15 counts of engaging in a terrorist act, Little Rock Police Chief Stuart Thomas said. The terrorist counts stem from the shots fired at an occupied building.

UPDATE at 6/1/09 4:13:32 pm:

More information:

At the Monday-afternoon briefing, Thomas said investigators believe Muhammad acted alone, and likely carried “political and religious motives.” Thomas said the gunman targeted the military but was not believed to be part of a broader scheme.

Shooter, Victims Identified West LR Shooting

At a briefing Monday afternoon, Little Rock police chief Stuart Thomas identified the suspect as Abdul Hakim Mujahid Muhammad, 24, of Little Rock. Thomas says Muhammad also goes by the name Carlos Bledsoe.

Hastings identified the 2nd wounded soldier as Quinton Ezeagwula, age unknown. He remains at a local hospital in stable condition with non-life-threatening injuries.

Muhammad led police on a brief pursuit towards downtown Little Rock, before being taken into custody in the area of the Interstate 30/630 interchange. Authorities searched the vehicle and found an assault rifle, Hastings said. A bomb squad was called in, as police were concerned about two bags in the vehicle, but no explosives were found, he said.

At the Monday-afternoon briefing, Thomas said investigators believe Muhammad acted alone, and likely carried “political and religious motives.” Thomas said the gunman targeted the military but was not believed to be part of a broader scheme.

Muhammad faces one capital murder charge, and 15 counts of terroristic acts.

The FBI (web) has opened an investigation into the incident, said Steven Frazier, spokesman for the agency’s Little Rock office. “Based on what we find, we will determine whether there is any federal jurisdiction to prosecute,” he said.

BREAKING: The shooting of two young soldiers, one fatally, outside the Army recruiting station on Rodney Parham about 10 a.m. this morning, has taken on a much broader dimension.

At an afternoon news conference, police said the man who’s suspected in the shooting did not know the victims but shot them because of “ideological reasons.” The suspect was described as a convert to Islam who specifically targeted soldiers for the attack.Police Chief Stuart Thomas said he didn’t appear to be part of a larger conspiracy and appeared to have acted alone.

“He has a disagreement with military operations in Iraq and Afghanistan,” Thomas said.

Federal agencies are on the case.

The suspect, Abdulhaqim Mujahid Muhammad, 24, lived on Mara Lynn Drive. He was formerly known as Carlos Bledsoe and apparently moved to Little Rock from Memphis two to three months ago. He also had lived in Nashville, Tenn. recently.

Evening all - just have a short break before dinner!
Hmmm Abdulhakim Mujahid Muhammad - sounds Irish to me!
Isn’t it strange (and I apologize if I’m repeating what someone else said above) that this is the second time in a few days that likely jailhouse converts to Islam - or at least the Black Muslim flavor - have either tried to commit violence (remember the 4 dummies in Newburgh, NY who thought they were buying C-4 and a shoulder fired ground to air missile only last week) and this fellow.
Wonder if this in any way connects to Ahmedinnerjackets threat to wreak havoc on the US if we got too involved in trying to stop Iran’s nuke peaceful purposes weapons program?

Thomas said investigators believe Muhammad acted alone, and likely carried “political and religious motives.” Thomas said the gunman targeted the military but was not believed to be part of a broader scheme.

Political and religious motives? Um, could they be more cryptically uncryptic? One soldier was murdered and a second injured, and they’re dancing around the possibility that it was jihad.

Cops: double shooting terror act

“He has a disagreement with military operations in Iraq and Afghanistan,” Thomas said.

Federal agencies are on the case.

The suspect, Abdulhaqim Mujahid Muhammad, 24, lived on Mara Lynn Drive. He was formerly known as Carlos Bledsoe and apparently moved to Little Rock from Memphis two to three months ago. He also had lived in Nashville, Tenn. recently.

“At this point,” LRPD Chief Stuart Thomas said, “we believe that it’s associated with his disagreement over military operations. We believe that primarily it is a religious disagreement, and that he has a dislike for military personell and military actions.”

CAIR soon to issue a press release that he wasn’t a true Muslim.

Just checked their site. Nothing prominent yet. Their main feature is a little document that they’ve prepared, explaining to Obama what they’d like him to say in his Cairo speech this week. Here’s an excerpt:

we should do what is necessary to resolve long-standing conflicts, and particularly the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, that are the main source of anti-American feeling in the Muslim world.

Now is the time to tell Israeli leaders that we will no longer support the denial of the legitimate rights of the Palestinian people and that we will take concrete actions to back up that declaration. Israel’s wall of separation must come down, humiliating roadblocks must be removed, the illegal settlements must be dismantled, food and other essential supplies must flow freely, Palestinian rights must be restored, and a viable and independent Palestinian state must be created and supported.

188 _RememberTonyC  Mon, Jun 1, 2009 4:52:18pm

OT …. But I heard an interesting caller to a talk show (yes, I did say that) with an alternate “take” on the Obama Date Night from the other day.

Since the First Couple wanted to lessen their carbon footprint and take a smaller plane to NYC, were they actually putting the country in danger by doing so? What if a crisis developed while they were in the air in a plane other than Air Force One? Would Obama have had command and control capability on the Gulfstream? And what about the “footballs?” Was the CIC’s more modest transportation a reckless act? Wasn’t Dubya on the road when 9/11 happened and he needed to get airborne in Air Force One in order to conduct his business?

I hope the WAB’s desire to go to a Broadway show didn’t set a precedent that our enemies can take advantage of if there is another “Date Night” in NYC.

I wouldn’t be too surprised to hear that you still can. Outside of the farmland along the eastern border and Washington and Benton counties in NWAR there hasn’t been too much appreciation in land costs.

I could have bought land between Fayetteville and Springdale back in ‘77 (when there still was a ‘between Fayetteville and Springdale’) for the same $300 per acre.

Not now, though.

Well, at least his self esteem is intact. Very important that.

There’s an interesting parallel here with the story about Doctor Tiller. Roeder murdered Tiller because he disagreed with abortion and Tiller’s specific practices.

This shooter murdered one soldier and wounded a second because he disagreed with US military policy and operations (ostensibly against Islamists).

I suspect that there’d be quite an overlap between those who think that Tiller’s murder was wrong who would likewise think that the soldier’s murderer was right. Likewise, I think there’s overlap between those who think that Tiller’s murder was just and who would seriously oppose taking the life of the US soldiers.

There’s a third group, who would find both murders heinous and who must be prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law because extrajudicial actions such as this can not be tolerated. I’m glad to know that there are quite a few here who subscribe to this third view.

The attempt to draw parallels between the Tiller case and this one will overwhelm parts of the blogosphere.

Already on various Tiller-case blog discussions the temptation to divert the attention toward the so-called Islamic threat was present, as in the current PJM article comments

83. Self-hating Boomer:
I’d like to see some hard statistics on this, but I strongly suspect that there are far more people living in the US (not all of them Muslim) who think that random attacks on Jews are justified than people who think that this rather narrowly targeted attack is justified. If the larger condoning of killing (i.e. Islamic, and particularly antisemitic terrorism) isn’t tearing the fabric of society apart, why should this relatively minor matter do so?

(there are also a couple of really ugly comments on that thread…)

Call me biased, but I’m suspicious of anybody who out of their own free will converts to the religion of peace, especially given how peaceful it’s been lately.

Hey, it’s OK to steal (from dhimmi), OK to rape (infidel women), OK to kill (Jews). What’s not to like?

OT: Geithner tells China its dollar assets are safe. Chinese laugh at him

[Link: www.reuters.com…]

That headline wording you are using is being played over and over in the right-o-sphere, even though it is not part of the Reuters headline. However, let’s see where the word laugh comes in the story:

“Chinese assets are very safe,” Geithner said in response to a question after a speech at Peking University, where he studied Chinese as a student in the 1980s.

His answer drew loud laughter from his student audience, reflecting scepticism in China about the wisdom of a developing country accumulating a vast stockpile of foreign reserves instead of spending the money to raise living standards at home. [emp added]

I do not consider myself an expert, but in my sales calls on prison stores in Arkansas, Kentucky, and Texas I saw very little integration. That was in the ’80s and early ’90s, so they may be all peace and love now.

Reminded me of what my baby brother told me about his time swinging a spike hammer on a railroad track gang. “Man. I would guess the taxpayers picked up the tab for the President’s security, as we should.

But for a personal “date”, the cost of the tickets, etc., would have been paid for by Obama (unless they were given to him).

I don’t care about their “date”.

What disturbs me is the disconnect this man has, to go on such a showy and costly (to himself as well as the taxpayers) date with his wife, while so many Americans are suffering in a bad economy.

Everyone I’ve ever known who was in serious lockup was a racist when they were done with it. When I was a kid, I’d have rather died than go to prison. Age tempers things like that, but still I’m not likely to do anything that is going to cross me up with John Law.

Wouldn’t be prudent…

I have never been in a prison but have hung out in the county for various reasons…even with the little dogs it was nearly unbearable…you have to take a stand, little ones all the time…it’s one fast choice after another for part of the day

I would guess the taxpayers picked up the tab for the President’s security, as we should.
But for a personal “date”, the cost of the tickets, etc., would have been paid for by Obama (unless they were given to him).
I don’t care about their “date”.

BTW, I boldly predict one of two things will happen in the MSM….actually not so bold, given their predictable and quisling-esque tendencies.

1) This will continue to be trumped by coverage of the Roeder case

or

2) The MSM will ignore exactly how Mr. Bledsoe found allah (jailhouse convert, anyone?) and make the issue about gun control.

iirc it was last spring when a pos bombed the marine recruiting center at times square, there was a rally a wk later.
it was such a rainy drizzly balmy day. almost dreamy w/ a mist so heavy you felt drenched even under the tent that the “gather of eagles” had rented for the occasion.
i’m so glad i went to protest the fcking coward who had set off the bomb. tourists were stopping and asking what was going on.
many were from fly over country and upset at such a vile act.
streams of cops kept driving by. flashing their lights, blaring their sirens, giving us the thumbs up.
and it wasn’t a big crowd.
maybe 100 citizens who showed up to give support to our military.
it is hideous that they are under assault by those they are protecting.

re: #238 lawhawk

Amen.

Sanity is a rare political commodity these days.

I agree to an extent. Yes, I always find this stuff mildly distasteful but the lefties tried to make a big deal out of Bush at his ranch while Americans are dying in Iraq and Condi shoe shopping in NY during Katrina. It’s partisan outrage and accomplishes nothing. There’s no real scandal there and nothing to be gained by complaining about it. In the UK they have a real scandal going on about officials abusing public funds. Sadly, it look like the scandal is going to produce big gains for the BNP. So it goes.

So is Jon Stewart responsible for all the dillweeds that think his show is NEWS?

I mean, if O’Reilly has been inciting hate, it seems to me that Stewart is culpable of abetting ignorance. I have seen no disclaimers on his “jokes”.

No one believes that it’s “news”. Our first hint is that it is on Comedy Central. Our second hint is that nearly everything on the show, other than some of the interviews, is done for laughs.

Eat at the white house.

Seriously, spending 75K in taxpayer money to fly three planes and two helicopters to NYC, inconveniencing thousands so he can take the wife out to eat? Bullshit. He lost that privilege when he was elected.

I would guess the taxpayers picked up the tab for the President’s security, as we should.

But for a personal “date”, the cost of the tickets, etc., would have been paid for by Obama (unless they were given to him).

I don’t care about their “date”.

What disturbs me is the disconnect this man has, to go on such a showy and costly (to himself as well as the taxpayers) date with his wife, while so many Americans are suffering in a bad economy.

i couldn’t agree more. today in his “reading” all he talked abt. was how we are going to have to sacrifice, sacrifice, sacrifice. and then off he goes w/ sasquaatch
in 3 planes and a helicopter to experience the lush life.
fancy restaurant in the west village and a bdway play (started an hour late to accommodate them). what perfect timing to show he doesn’t give a shite abt. how this looks to the rest of us who are doing the sacrificing.

not to mention what would the msm have done to pres. bush if he had done this. taken laura on a “date” and flounced around like a foppy dilettante dork
like there was money to burn because he is so special.

re: #454 Wendya

I wonder how many people lost their dinner and theater reservations because traffic was restricted and showed down for the Presidential Date Parade. I lived in the Atlanta area when Clinton was president and he would fly into town on Friday afternoon, locking down traffic on the downtown connector and making everyone trying to get home hours late. It was stupid then and it’s stupid now. They should be going out of their way to make sure the people paying their bills are not inconvenienced.

The left wing sites are laughing at this with links to Reagan’s trip to a Broadway show with Nancy, Bush’s constant fund raising trips and to the ranch.

Obama has taken two trips and inconvenienced thousands while sticking it to the taxpayers to take his wife on two different dates in his first 4.5 months. Not a vacation where WH2 tags along, a one night date. It’s rude and it’s a huge “screw you asshole” to the taxpayers. If he wants to fly to Hawaii and spend a month there, I’d have less of a problem with it. As was mentioned above, he and his wife have both droned on and on about how we must sacrifice while he plays “rock star”. I think we have sacrificed enough.

re: #457 Killgore Trout

I agree to an extent. Yes, I always find this stuff mildly distasteful but the lefties tried to make a big deal out of Bush at his ranch while Americans are dying in Iraq and Condi shoe shopping in NY during Katrina. It’s partisan outrage and accomplishes nothing. There’s no real scandal there and nothing to be gained by complaining about it. In the UK they have a real scandal going on about officials abusing public funds. Sadly, it look like the scandal is going to produce big gains for the BNP. So it goes.

I’m not outraged so much as flabbergasted at his disconnect and his apparent deeply-held belief that he’s more special than the rest of us.
but you are right - in the end, any “outrage” over this accomplishes nothing much except everybody’s angry.

OTOH, of course, there was the time Clinton held up all of, what was it, LAX? for a haircut. But that’s OK. He’s Clinton. That comes somewhere above God to the Left.

All the POTUS’s are guilty to a degree. To say it’s better for Reagan to take Nancy out to a NY show, or Bush or Clinton to fly around in AF 1 to raise money is not being honest. Some are just upset that’s it’s BHO. All in all, it’s a win for Obama, it makes the right look petty and takes the focus off real issues.

I know more than a few people that get their only real source of “news” from the Daily Show and Colbert Report. It was years ago now, but it was a story on the Daily Show itself about how many college aged adults used the show as a news source (and its only gotten worse) and made a joke about not being real news. All on deaf ears really.

A lot of people have been concerned about conflating entertainment with journalism. People that don’t follow the news (which is many, many people; especially the young) will still watch the Daily Show for entertainment value and never touch a newspaper, visit a blog or even stop their dials on local news broadcasts, cable news stations, or news radio.
