A Statistical Investigation of Possible Political Motivations in the 2009 Closing of Chrysler Dealerships
Part One of Several: Congressional Representation
Following Chrysler Corporation’s announcement that it intends to close many of its dealerships, some have alleged that political considerations played a role in determining which dealerships will be shut down. In order to investigate those claims in as objective and methodologically rigorous a manner as possible, I have downloaded the two published lists of dealerships, listing those that will be closed and those that will remain open. I have converted those lists into a digital database, which I will use for statistical investigation of possible political bias.
Most of the allegations have focused on political contributions made by the owners of individual dealerships. Unfortunately, information about political contributions is difficult to obtain in a way that affords easy integration with other data (although one blogger has been attempting to do just that). I may try to do this myself at some point.
In the meantime, I’m going to focus on the issue of congressional representation, which is a relatively easy thing to look up in an automated way. At least one blog has raised the possibility that dealership closings might be concentrated in regions with stronger Republican voting records, and looking up congressional representation is one way to test that.
The lists contain 3180 Chrysler dealerships located in the 50 states and Guam. There are no Chrysler dealerships in the District of Columbia. There are some in Puerto Rico, but they weren’t included in either list. Of the 3180 dealerships, 789 (24.8%) are closing, and 2391 (75.2%) are staying open.
For the following analysis, I’ll omit the one dealership in Guam, because Guam has no voting member of congress. I will also omit Clippinger Chrysler Jeep Dodge in West Covina, California, whose district has had no representation in the House of Representatives since February, when its representative, Hilda Solis, resigned to serve as U.S. Secretary of Labor.
That leaves 3178 dealerships, of which 1,682 are in districts with a Democrat congressperson (“Democratic congressional districts,” or “DCDs”) and 1,496 are in districts with a Republican congressperson (“Republican congressional districts,” or “RCDs”). If there were no effect of political leanings on likelihood of dealership closure, then we’d expect 24.8% of the DCD dealers to close, and 24.8% of the RCD dealers to close. Here’s what actually happened:
DCD: 1,251/1,682 (74.3%) surviving, 431/1,682 (25.6%) closing.
RCD: 1,138/1,496 (76.1%) surviving, 358/1,496 (23.9%) closing.
As you can see, there’s almost no difference in the proportions of dealers closing in DCDs versus RCDs. A slightly higher percentage of DCD dealerships are closing, but the difference is not statistically significant (Chi2=1.2171, p=0.270).
Another way to look at regional political differences is in the party affiliations of states’ senators. Here, I’ll once again include the dealership in West Covina. To maximize the chance of detecting a difference, I’ll compare dealerships in the 21 states with two Democratic senators (“Strongly Democratic States” or “SDS”), versus the 14 states with two Republican senators (“Strongly Republican States,” or “SRS”):
SDS: 1,113/1,496 (74.4%) surviving, 383/1,496 (25.6%) closing.
SRS: 589/759 (77.6) surviving, 170/759 (22.4%) closing.
A slightly higher proportion of SDS dealerships than SRS dealerships are closing, and this time the difference approaches statistical significance (Chi2=2.7922, p=0.095).
I plan to perform and post more analyses, when I find time.

At 25, 'Tetris' drops into place as gaming icon
Jun. 2, 2009 12:00 PM
Associated Press
NEW YORK - With its scratches and sticky brown beer stains, the "Tetris" arcade machine near the back of a Brooklyn bar called Barcade has seen better days. Which makes sense, given that the machine was made in the 1980s.
Even today, though, it's not hard to find 20- and 30-somethings plucking away at its ancient controls, flipping shapes made up of four connected squares and fitting them into orderly patterns as they descend, faster and faster as the game goes on.
"You could just play infinitely," said Michael Pierce, 28, who was playing against Dan Rothfarb, also 28. Both have been fans since they - and the game - were young. "Tetris" has its 25th birthday this week.

Did anyone post this? The ADL has a write-up about Roeder. I thought it might get lost in the other thread.
[Link: www.adl.org...]
Shooter In Kansas Physician Killing Held Extreme Beliefs
New York, NY, June 2, 2009 … The man charged with killing a Kansas abortion doctor was not only a radical anti-abortion extremist, but also was an active member of anti-government extremist movements, according to the Anti-Defamation League (ADL).
Scott Philip Roeder, 51, belonged to the anti-government extremist sovereign citizen and tax protest movements. The sovereign citizen movement believes that virtually all existing government in the United States is illegitimate and they seek to "restore" an idealized, minimalist government that never actually existed.
"Roeder's attachment to extreme causes extended beyond anti-abortion extremism," said Abraham H. Foxman, ADL National Director. "His extremism cross-pollinated between anti-government extremism and anti-abortion activism and led to violence and murder."
(snip)
Roeder was previously arrested in Topeka, Kansas in 1996 after deputies pulled him over for having a bogus sovereign citizen license plate on his vehicle and found bomb-making materials in his car. He was subsequently convicted of an explosives violation, though his conviction was ultimately overturned due to a technicality.

WASHINGTON (AFP) – In a sign Obama-mania is still going strong, the American Society of Magazine Editors' (ASME) has added a new category in its search for the year's top US magazine covers: the best one featuring Barack Obama.
The covers of US magazines which appeared between July 2008 -- when the US president was still an Illinois senator -- and June 2009 are eligible to enter the contest.
There are nine other categories ranging from the sexiest to the best news and business cover, ASME said Monday as it posted a call for entries.

I did a Google search for "Stanislav Mishin". It seems like every frigging right wing blog has latched onto his article. In the search, I found some other articles. One should tell these folks that Mr. Mishin is no friend of theirs.
An example of his work during the Georgian Crisis last year:
Mr. Saakashvili, it is time to say goodbye
He calls the BBC a "mouth piece of British Neocons" and calls the Georgian troops "Anglo-American trained goons".
Mr. Mishin is not to be trusted, and no one should fall for his tripe.

I think the percentage of dealer closings is slightly higher in Democrat-controlled districts because more Democrats buy foreign cars, and are less likely to buy Chrysler
Sounds plausible to me. But that would presuppose that (A) Chrysler is closing the dealerships that are selling fewer cars, and either (B) Democrats are becoming less and less likely to buy domestic cars, at a greater rate than Republicans, or (C) the Democratic districts where more dealerships are closing are becoming more strongly Democratic than they used to be.
I believe that A is true, but not necessarily B or C.

STERLING HEIGHTS, Mich. – A door-to-door solicitor apparently rubbed a Michigan man the wrong way, prompting him to grab a rifle and fire two shots — one of which hit his own car. Police said the 20-year-old apparently was intoxicated when the solicitor paid a visit Monday afternoon. In irritation, they said he fired once inside and once outside the suburban Detroit house.

Purchasing Hummer gives them a head start in several lucrative markets, establishing their presence with a top-flight luxury vehicle that commands a high price and large profit margin. China's own rapidly emerging upper class will soon be large enough to pay attention to, as well, when it comes to providing this sort of toy.

Spillover from the last thread:
I did a Google search for "Stanislav Mishin". It seems like every frigging right wing blog has latched onto his article. In the search, I found some other articles. One should tell these folks that Mr. Mishin is no friend of theirs.
An example of his work during the Georgian Crisis last year:
Mr. Saakashvili, it is time to say goodbye
He calls the BBC a "mouth piece of British Neocons" and calls the Georgian troops "Anglo-American trained goons".Mr. Mishin is not to be trusted, and no one should fall for his tripe.
Look, anyone who knows the Russki slavik could tell from the name of his blog "Mat Rodina" that he'd be a whack-job.

Stop talking significance, give us effect sizes
By congressional district:
D: 1,251/1,682 (74.3%) surviving, 431/1,682 (25.6%) closing.
R: 1,138/1,496 (76.1%) surviving, 358/1,496 (23.9%) closing.
By senate representation:
D: 1,113/1,496 (74.4%) surviving, 383/1,496 (25.6%) closing.
R: 589/759 (77.6) surviving, 170/759 (22.4%) closing.
These inter-group differences are very small.
Frankly, I think if there's anything to this story, it will come out in the political contribution information, not voting patterns. And I still suspect that the answer will be that a few powerful donors pulled strings, but there was no systematic bias. But, hopefully, we'll see.

1. How do you add a video to a comment?
If it's a youtube video, then just post the link, and it'll show up as a little expandable "youtube video" symbol. If not, then you'll just have to link to it like anything else.
2. How do you send items to Charles for the purposes of starting a new thread?
You can use the little "contact" option, in green at the upper left of your window. Or just post it as a spinoff link, or as a comment, and see if he takes an interest.

SANTIAGO, Chile – Police say two suitcases carried by a woman who was about to fly from Chile to Spain were made of cocaine. Detective Leandro Morales at the Santiago airport says the drug "was not hidden in the luggage. This time the suitcases were the drug." Morales tells The Associated Press that the suitcases were made of a substance combining cocaine with resin and glass fiber.

Guilt-ridden New Yorker returns stolen rock to Israel
AFP
Tue Jun 2, 12:44 pm ET
JERUSALEM (AFP) – A guilt-ridden New Yorker has returned a massive marble stone he took from an excavation site in Jerusalem's Old City 12 years ago, Israel's Antiquities Authority said on Tuesday.
The 21-kilo (46-pound) piece of 9th century marble column disappeared from an Israeli Antiquities Authority (IAA) dig in 1997.
Several weeks ago the authority received an email from a priest in New York state who requested forgiveness on behalf of a member of his congregation.

Sauteed onions. Also, get some hot sauces like Dave's Insanity and mix (very sparingly) with mayo; it really gives it some zip.
If you're making your own burgers, get good meat like fresh ground chuck ( I find sirloin dries out too fast) and season it with garlic powder, kosher salt, black pepper and some parsley. If you start with good meat and cook it right--you do not need condiments.

Slumbering, while the car is parked, turn the steering wheel, then check the boots on the CV joints to see if they're torn. My guess is they are.

From what I can see, any difference is safely within the noise band.

I agree. If something pans out with the individual donor information, I'll try something fancy like multilevel regression, to see if Republican-owned dealerships were more likely to get axed within individual market areas. Barack Obama should stop apologising for America
..... The world needs a president who aggressively projects American power on the world stage, rather than seeks the adoration of traditionally hostile foreign audiences. In Egypt, Obama should not be afraid to offend the sensibilities of Muslim leaders, by calling for religious tolerance, freedom of speech, worship and association, and a rejection of Islamist extremism.
In Germany, the president should call on Europe to learn the lessons of the Holocaust and stand and fight against totalitarianism, whether in the form of the Taliban in Afghanistan or the Mullahs of Tehran in their drive for nuclear domination of the Middle East. He must urge the Germans to end their massive investments in Iran, which shamefully help sustain a regime that threatens to wipe the descendents of the survivors of the Final Solution from the face of the earth. .......
And all that coming from a british newspaper!

Obama says Iran's energy concerns legitimate
President Barack Obama reiterated that Iran may have some right to nuclear energy _ provided it takes steps to prove its aspirations are peaceful. ... "Without going into specifics, what I do believe is that Iran has legitimate energy concerns, legitimate aspirations. The comments echo remarks Obama made in Prague last month in which he said his administration would "support Iran's right to peaceful nuclear energy with rigorous inspections" if Iran proves it is no longer a nuclear threat.

//and I'm poorThanks again, Lizards.
Yeah, CV joints are a pain. You can buy rebuilt drive axles, but a lot of times, they use crap parts to rebuild them, to keep it cheap. And you have be careful when pulling the axles out (use plugs to hold the side gears in in position in the differential), or the side gears can move out of place, completely screwing things up. Very bad.
I generally avoid FWD cars because of CV joints.

Well, this is definitely a strange one.... it's a black comedy from Hitoshi Matsumoto that takes on the Japanese "giant superhero" genre. If you get this movie (and please do, it's one of those rare classics), keep in mind you'll have to watch it subtitled, as it hasn't been dubbed in English.
I also won't spoil the ending, and I'd advise you to ignore the IMDB discussions on the subject until you watch the whole movie.

Fort Lewis soldier now faces federal pimping charges
STACEY MULICK; The [Tacoma, WA] News Tribune
Published: 06/02/09 1:02 am %P% Updated: 06/02/09 6:28 am
A Fort Lewis sergeant accused of prostituting two teenage girls now faces federal charges.
Federal prosecutors have charged Sgt. Sterling Terrance Hospedales, 26, in U.S. District Court with sex trafficking of a child and attempted sex trafficking of a child, the U.S. Attorney’s Office said Monday.
He has yet to enter a plea in the case and remained in custody at the federal detention center in SeaTac.
Hospedales, an infantryman originally from Florida, was charged in April in Pierce County Superior Court with two counts of first-degree promoting prostitution. He’d been at the Pierce County Jail, awaiting trial. County prosecutors dismissed the charges Friday to make way for the federal charges.

Why worry if there is money to fix roads when the government is making the cars?
Administration: Highway fund to go broke in August
By JOAN LOWY, Associated Press Writer Joan Lowy, Associated Press Writer – 45 mins ago
WASHINGTON – The Obama administration is warning lawmakers that the trust fund that pays for highway construction will go broke in August unless Congress approves an infusion of as much as $7 billion.
Sen. Barbara Boxer, chairman of the Senate Environment and Public Works Committee, said at a hearing Tuesday that the administration has told senators the Federal Highway Trust Fund will need an estimated $5 billion to $7 billion to keep current construction projects going.
The California Democrat said another $8 billion to $10 billion will be needed to keep the fund solvent through the year ending Sept. 30, 2010.

Man charged in death of Kansas abortion provider
AP
WICHITA, Kan. – The suspect in the shooting death of Dr. George Tiller was charged Tuesday with first-degree murder (emphasis added). Scott Roeder, 51, made a brief appearance in court via a video link from the Sedgwick County Jail. Roeder, wearing a dark red jail jumpsuit and fiddling with the charging documents on a podium in front of him, said, "OK," when Judge Ben Burgess read the charges.
Burgess ordered Roeder to be held without bond and said he was not allowed to communicate with Tiller's family. The judge told Roeder that he would be assigned a public defender.
"And I'll obviously be hearing from one of those lawyers between now — or do you know how long it will be before I hear from one of those lawyers?" Roeder said.
The judge told Roeder he could expect to hear from an attorney within two days. A preliminary hearing is set for June 16 at 9 a.m.

The first place I would look to disprove that political motivation for the Chrysler dealers, would be the profitability of the dealerships that are closing compared with those that are staying open. Next I would look at length of time in business (perhaps there is a last-in-first-out bias) and size of inventory.
Otherwise, a good investigative journalist should be able to discover how the decisions were made and who made them.
Generally speaking, I would look to business reasons before political ones.

There's the national Do Not Call list. Although I'd prefer an opt-in system over this - which is an opt-out system - it's something. Just takes a moment to enroll.
It doesn't block everyone, but it cut down dramatically on my nuisance calls, from one or more per day to around one per month.

Here's an interesting article on the stimulus results so far.
Obama Stimulus Slow to Trickle Into ‘Real Economy’
California public-works official Bob Beaumont says the $2.1 million he may get from President Barack Obama’s stimulus plan “isn’t going to make a lot of difference” in a county with $40 million in “shovel-ready” projects.“It seems like the federal stimulus is trickling down very slowly,” says Beaumont, chief assistant director of public works for Marin County, north of San Francisco. “My feeling is it’s not finding its way into the economy as quickly as it should.”
The $787 billion package Congress passed in February is having less impact than economists expected in pulling the U.S. out of the worst recession in at least 50 years. About $111 billion in planned infrastructure spending is arriving so slowly that recovery in the final six months of 2009 may be weak.
“Most of the stimulus still hasn’t yet reached the real economy,” says Robert Solow, professor emeritus at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology in Cambridge, who won the 1987 Nobel Prize for economics. “It will help us a lot in the second half of the year. But given the collapse in consumer spending, business investment and state and local government spending, I think it’s premature to be getting optimistic.”

You mean a government program doesn't work?
My entire universe has crumbled.
It works surprisingly well. It imposes penalties on those who call people who've registered; telemarketers are supposed to check the list first. It doesn't prevent the use of out-of-date lists; if you've just registered, your nuisance calls won't stop immediately, but they'll decline in frequency over the next several weeks or months. And it doesn't prevent companies who simply choose to ignore the penalties - usually scams of one sort or another, hoping to rake in as much cash as possible quickly and then vanishing from the face of the earth.
But as noted above, it has probably gotten rid of 90%-95% of my junk calls.

Interesting part is that it is quite common for that same environmentalist to support Iran's right.

Two Republican Moderates in Senate Worry About Future of GOP
The moderates referenced are Snowe and Collins.
Excerpt:
Snowe and Collins, the highest-profile GOP moderates left, insist Obama can't always count on their vote. Neither approved the Democratic budget outline, for example, and both oppose a pro-union measure known as "card check." And each has turned aside pressure by Democrats to leave the GOP. Snowe says there have been several major overtures over the years. "A lot of Democrats will kid me. They'll say, 'Oh, Olympia, you really should be a Democrat.' I tell them I couldn't do it. This is my identity."
Collins agrees. "I would never switch parties," she says. "My DNA is moderate Republican."

Feds spike voter citizenship checks in Georgia
By SHANNON McCAFFREY, The Associated Press
4:09 p.m. June 1, 2009
ATLANTA — The Justice Department has rejected Georgia's system of using Social Security numbers and driver's license data to check whether prospective voters are citizens, a process that was a subject of a federal lawsuit in the weeks leading up to November's election.
In a letter released on Monday, the Justice Department said the state's voter verification program is frequently inaccurate and has a "discriminatory effect" on minority voters. The decision means Georgia must halt the citizenship checks, although the state can still ask the Justice Department to reconsider, according to the letter and to the Georgia secretary of state's office.
"This flawed system frequently subjects a disproportionate number of African-American, Asian and/or Hispanic voters to additional, and more importantly, erroneous burdens on the right to register to vote," Loretta King, acting assistant attorney general of the Justice Department's civil rights division, said. King's letter was sent to Georgia Attorney General Thurbert Baker on Friday.
The decision comes as Georgia awaits word on whether a law passed in the spring that requires newly registering voters to show proof of citizenship will pass muster with DOJ. Under the law that takes effect in January, people must show their proof up front compared to doing checks through databases.
A three-judge federal panel in October ordered the state to seek Justice Department preclearance for the checks under the Voting Rights Act of 1965, the same reason the federal agency must sign off on the new law that made Georgia only the second state after Arizona to require such proof. Georgia is one of several states that need federal approval before changing election rules because of a history of discriminatory Jim Crow-era voting practices.
Secretary of State Karen Handel blasted DOJ's decision, saying it opens the floodgates for non-citizens to vote in the state.
"Clearly, politics took priority over common sense and good public policy," said Handel, a Republican candidate for governor in 2010.

Crap! I work elections in Georgia (and take a vacation day to do it) because I care that our system works for its citizens. Every person who comes into the polling place must show ID regardless of color, gender, age, etc. Even if my next door neighbor comes into the polling place we verify their name and address. The Secretary of States office has worked very hard to make registration available to all legal citizens including accepting a free ID card issued by Drivers Services for those who don't have liscenses.
This ruling just leaves room for fraud plain and simple. The same reason they still have paper ballots in Chicago and Miami when a computerized system with receipts could eliminate almost all "found" ballot issues.
...and all in the name of civil rights. Good grief!

RUSH: We all know about the murder of the abortion doctor. That's reprehensible but yesterday in Arkansas we had a militant Muslim take out some Army recruiters, military recruiters because he doesn't like the US military. I don't think any US Marshals have been posted to protect Army recruiters and military recruiters -- and we've been warned, of course, that, you know, this guy, this wacko, this Scott Roeder guy that murdered the abortion doctor, "Why, we gotta be careful! We can't associate with these kinds of local terrorists." Has anybody heard the name William Ayers? Here is a terrorist that launched President Obama's political career in Chicago with a fundraiser in his home, a man who proudly admitted to blowing up the Pentagon and wished he'd gone further. So we have a president who is associated with a domestic terrorist, is friends with him. The guy now runs education in Chicago, Bill Ayers. Boy, the double standard left and right, is incredible.

Feds spike voter citizenship checks in Georgia
Obama's Justice Department has blocked the state of Georgia's attempt to require prospective voters to show proof of citizenship before allowing them to register to vote.
It's a victory for... well... illegal aliens who want to vote, candidates who want to recruit votes from illegal aliens, and, of course, ACORN.
It may be "Obama's Justice Department" now, but this suit originated back in October with the Bush Administration. The problem seems to be with the use of databases that are incomplete to check citizenship. An amended state law requiring proof provided by the voter is awaiting review. It will probably stand; it sounds similar to the requirements used without issue in my state.

re: #371 SixDegrees
It works surprisingly well. It imposes penalties on those who call people who've registered; telemarketers are supposed to check the list first. It doesn't prevent the use of out-of-date lists; if you've just registered, your nuisance calls won't stop immediately, but they'll decline in frequency over the next several weeks or months. And it doesn't prevent companies who simply choose to ignore the penalties - usually scams of one sort or another, hoping to rake in as much cash as possible quickly and then vanishing from the face of the earth.
But as noted above, it has probably gotten rid of 90%-95% of my junk calls.
The idea that government never works isn't true. And reagan had a funny habit of appointing heads of agencies that were against the agencies they were in charge of. No wonder stuff wasn't working correctly!
I don't understand people that paint with a broad brush and say "government never does anything right!"
and then you look at stuff like say...I don't know...the military and then that is infallible and all accusations of the military industrial complex corrupting the military in general are swept aside.

How can this be Constitutional?
It is done under a civil rights era policy of having the Feds oversee changes to our election process because of a history of Jim Crow laws.
IMO they are abusing that power to force Georgia to accept registrations that may not be valid just prior to elections. It is hard enough to process all of the new registrations given the manpower the counties and SOS office have.
If it were up to me I'd just slap a huge fine on those who register illegally and persecute the heck out of the cases. Especially those who register illegals knowingly.
The Supreme court will be taking a look at this but the Obama Justice department sure made it more difficult with this ruling.

The President sited his vast experience in business management and corporate restructuring. He pointed to the fact that he has built twelve companies from the ground up, managed seventeen others, and brought them out of the red into profitability, and…and…
Oh wait - wrong Obama. I’m thinking of Fred Obama… out of Connecticut. Inventor of Cheez-Whiz, Fruit Loops, colorable place mats, and Boog-Stop, the pocket nose-hair trimmer. Fred Obama… of the Connecticut Obama’s.

Right now, the only thing the stimulus bill is doing is maintaining an atmosphere of panic, masking the emerging fact that the current downturn is already mending itself and probably isn't as bad as the government would like everyone to believe.
Given that so much of the money allocated for stimulus remains unspent - on the order of 90% of it or more - once can still hope that cooler heads will prevail and a move to de-allocate those funds, at least partially, will take place. But I won't be holding my breath.

Hey, what about me? I'm bring you all this important Ron Paul information and links, and I used technology, this computer here.
I feel bad for your computer. No circuit board should have to regurgitate LewRockell.com

Sheriff Arpaio the law & order elected Arizona official who prosecutes persons without papers in accordance with US law, says he is unfairly being investigated by the DOJ and Homeland Security. Was on Fox News with Glenn Beck.

I know why the civil war was fought but one of the intentions of our Founding Fathers was not to have a massive centralized government either.

Another bizarre headline....
SC funeral home license revoked for cutting corpse
Authorities revoked the licenses of a South Carolina funeral home and its director after he admitted one of his employees cut the legs of a 6-foot-7 man without the family's permission so the corpse would fit in a casket.

Reminds me of Tom Lehrer's "friend's" story; a heartwarming novel about a young necrophiliac who finally achieved his boyhood ambition by becoming coroner.

I'll loved his recitation of The Elements over Gilbert & Sullivan.

And I agree that our government should not be overly centralized. But it had to happen for some issues. Overly lenient states rights allowed jim crow laws. And that monster has returned, with Arizona hatefully banning Gay Adoption.

Where are you getting your numbers from? Link please.
I doubt Paul could get 10%, much less 5% or less. His group is very vocal, but I sincerely doubt the levels of popularity you claim, Killgore. You spend way too much time looking at Stormfront and related sites, IMHO. They inflate their numbers.
The 1-2% is what he was getting in the primaries last fall. The 10% and 20% were guesses. That's why I put question marks after them. That should have been obvious. My point was that Fox News has him on almost every day recently. That kind of exposure is bound to increase his popularity.

Here's a CNN poll (from today) on R candidates. Not sure if the candidates are pre-selected, but "other" gets 10%.
