Anti-Evolution Bills Die on the Vine in Texas

Science • Views: 1,892

Some more good news from Texas; that ludicrous House bill that would have allowed the young earth creationists at the Institute for Creation Research to offer a master’s degree in science education (despite a decision by the Higher Education Coordination Board to deny them this certification) has died when the House adjourned. Also dead: a bill that would have restored controversial language about “strengths and weaknesses” of evolutionary theory. More details at the National Center for Science Education: Antievolution bills die in Texas.

Hey, I'm likin' the new Microsoft search engine, "Bing."

Why?

Because when you do a side-by-side search for the word Mohammed, Google has zombietime as the #4 result -- but Bing puts me at #3! (Paste in "Mohammed" and see for yourself.)

The difference between a #4 ranking and a #3 ranking for a common search term can be thousands of extra visitors per day. So, I'm already a Bing fan.

Maybe it is just me, but I find it interesting beyond coincidence that two states that are former independent Republics (CA and TX) seem to represent the extremes of the American political parties.

Such actions are illegal. Charge them and prosecute them to the fullest extent of the law, and toss them in jail until they figure out what "the rule of law" is all about.

They can fuck right off. A few years ago, I had to take my daughter to an emergency clinic which was located in the same facility as an abortion clinic. They started screaming as us and were blocking all the parking and we ended up having to park a block away and walking thru them to get to the clinic. I use to be very much into paranormal research, but I was on the sceptic side. Had over a thousand reference books and papers in my collection in the 1970's. This stuff keeps getting recycled about every 15 years or so. I've seen it all.

I found it more than a bit ironic that Star Trek: Enterprise used the Nazi Reptilian BS and tried to make fans take it serious.

I agree but with the ongoing purge of moderates I think he might have a hard time getting the nomination. As I recall he doesn't have much history as a tax cutter so the John Galt crowd might sink him and some Christians have issues with his Mormon religion. Those numbers show more support for him than I would have guessed.

The poll was conducted in mid-May. It shows Huckabee, Palin and Romney each with around 20%, with the remainder scattered in another clump around Gingrich, Jeb Bush and somebody else, all with around 10%.

I'd say it's completely meaningless.

No, because there are half-decent representations of human beings in it. Interestingly, Hitler's depictions of people were always kinda weird - a common trait for, among others, schizophrenics.

Read a very interesting article a while back, which compared Churchill, Hitler and Eisenhower as artists. Apparently Hitler took himself the most seriously, Eisenhower thought of it as a hobby, and Churchill was the best of the lot, but realized he didn't have time to develop his talent. They all did landscapes, which it was suggested might be a leader's preference, but I suspect it was also what men of that generation learned to do in art class.

Great. Their timing is impeccable. I may soon have to get my birth control at Planned Parenthood, rather than Kaiser. For some reason, Kaiser never gets protestors, but PP constantly has some guy with gory pictures screaming "Spare your child!" at me and the terrified pregnant ladies coming for their prenatal checkups.

Abortion protesters don't seem to realize that Planned Parenthood provides many essential services to women (a lot of low income women) including regular female check-ups, and affordable birth control. It makes me very angry at times when people fail to appreciate the other services Planned Parenthood provides. If it wasn't for them, there would be more unplanned pregnancies that might turn into abortions.

Sure. But anyone offering a definitive response at the moment is already well into zealot territory and unrepresentative of the general population. Just like the primaries, which are won by appealing to the fringe, while elections are won by appealing to the middle. At the moment, however, it's simply too far in advance to draw any meaning from such polls.

I think all that can be said at this point is that the next election is, currently, Obama's election to lose.

On a strictly personal note: Romney creeps me out, for reasons I can't explain. No matter what environment he's in, from brightly-lit studio to sunny backyard barbecue, he always looks like he's holding a flashlight under his chin.

I hope that anyone who trespasses or assaults patients or doctors is criminally prosecuted. And, if this really starts happening, I'm going to start looking into joining one of those groups that escorts women into the clinics to protect them from scum like those you describe.

I'd also like to add that the people who objected to that DHS memo about right-wing extremists can now either admit they were wrong, or go to hell. There's no shame in admitting you were wrong. It rubbed me the wrong way the first time I read it too. I admit, I was wrong.

re: #52 buzzsawmonkey

Between people talking about throwing blood around, and people refusing to get vaccinated, it's beginning to sound less like a curse and more like everyday life.

Last time I saw pig's blood thrown, it was Christmas season '01, outside of Nordstrom's in S.F. A bunch of PETA freaks tried to throw some blood on a gal wearing a fur collared coat, and hit a pair of Japanese tourists instead. To add to the hilarity, 2 of the 3 PETA folks were wearing leather Birkenstocks. I guess that's about the level of competence you can expect from someone who thinks there's anything to be gained by throwing blood at people.

Isn't this interesting. Atheists often tell Creationists to create their own institutions of higher learning and to create their own research journals if they don't like the ostracizing they receive from the predominant ones currently existing. Here we see an example of how Creationists are legally blocked from doing just that. Just look at all the comments that support this kind of academic censorship! It is deplorable. What are you afraid of in allowing the Institute of Creation Research to have a Master's program?

No one is stopping them from offering such a degree. That degree just will not be accredited by the state as a science degree. And given that it was to be taught at an already established institution of higher learning established by creationists. . .your statement falls flat.

Deplorable? You're not really thinking it through. What are we afraid of? Well, if I were an employer in a biological sciences field, I'd be afraid of hiring someone whose science degree was not, you know, founded on science. As Americans, we should ALL be afraid of the potential damage this could do to our scientific enterprises.

There's always time to panic and it doesn't take any prep time and you don't need a plan. It's a procrastinator's dream.
