GOP Frontrunners: Huckabee, Palin, Romney

It doesn’t mean much this far out from the 2012 election, but the latest CNN poll shows Mike Huckabee with a very slight (i.e., statistically insignificant) lead as the GOP’s presidential front runner.

The survey suggests that 22 percent of Republicans would most likely support former Arkansas governor and former GOP presidential candidate Mike Huckabee for their party’s presidential nomination in 2012. Twenty-one percent say they would most likely back Alaska governor and 2008 Republican vice presidential nominee Sarah Palin, with an equal number supporting former Massachusetts governor and former White House hopeful Mitt Romney.

Taking into account the poll’s 4.5 percent sampling error, Huckabee, Palin and Romney seem to be locked in a hypothetical dead heat.

UPDATE at 6/2/09 5:29:27 pm:

Another take on the new poll from Andrew Malcolm: Poll: 4 months into Obama, Republicans looking better to Americans.

Of course, if trends in the Republican Party continue, probably only 22% of the party will even _vote_ in the next election. If that.

It's way too early for this sort of poll- it's pretty meaningless. I would have gone with Romney had I participated in this, but still. We have a mid-term up first. We should be focusing on increasing the number of fiscal conservatives in Congress.

I very much doubt that the political parties pay much attention to MSM polling. They have their own polling networks and organizations, as do all of the major candidates for pretty much any Federal office.

These polls are meant for public consumption. If there's any sort of nefarious plan at work, it would be to promote an essentially unelectable candidate to the electorate's fringe, who hold sway during the primaries. Huckleberry is an obvious choice for someone who could gain momentum thanks to the socon knuckle-draggers, but who is essentially unelectable.

He played the race card last time, too. From the top of the deck, the middle of the deck, and the bottom of the deck. He pulled the race card out from under handkerchiefs, and from behind people's ears. He had entire decks printed up, containing only 52 race cards. He had squadrons of C-130's flying over America, scattering millions of race cards on every American village, town, and city.

And that was when his candidacy wasn't in the slightest peril at all.

Considering the responsibilities of the next president, I think we should be looking for a successful business executive.

The FMSM and Dems would portray that person as one worse than Hitler and Stalin combined. Their successful demonization of American Capitalism would put paid to that right quick.

The Federal Reserve's latest money supply figures are out.

As of May 28th M1 (cash and cash equivalents) has grown, since October 2008, by 15.9%.

In general, you want to target growth to be 3% to 5% in a year to accommodate population and business growth.

So we grew money supply approximately 600% faster than target, on an annualized basis.

I'd like to think so, but there are a couple of factors that could mitigate against it:

2) The economy tanks, and Barry attributes it to the greed and moral turpitude of the Wall Street types, always a favorite target;

A current senator/rep running for re-election in a state/region that just lost a GM plant or greatly impacted by plant closings. That will be used agaisnt them by their opponent. GM jobs are now a politcal weapon. Just like closing a military base.

Other possibility - the economy, in spite of Teh One's best efforts, recovers and limps along. He takes full credit for the triumphant success, and then points to the obstructionists on the right, with their foot-dragging opposition to his plans, and their insane colleagues and associates, and draws an unflattering comparison.

It is possible, but with the debt we are running up I can't see the economy recovering any time soon.

You may be right about the knife/gunfight part (really depends on the Economy and a hoped for lack of terrorist activity). Yeah, I hear ya. Got the Chinese laughing in Geithner's face in Beijing when he says the dollar is string, and their investments here secure. Lemme tell you, from experience: if the Chinese don't like you, they tend to laugh behind your back. I remember the year after I graduated from HS and finally landed a job, I started looking at buying a house. 20% was a good rate in the Seattle area back then. :%P%

I remember those days; you and I are close to the same age.

One positive note out of Carter's Reign of Misery: CD rates went just as high, and you could snag a long-term CD with a ridiculous double-digit rate that would beat anything the market would ever return. I'm piling up cash right now in anticipation of something similar. If I can lock in even a 10% annual return for 10 years, I'm gonna be pretty happy, although more likely I'll wind up buying in over an extended period of time.

Sarah Palin has my support. The fact that the Left hates her so much tells me she's a threat. She can energize people without a teleprompter. Don't count her out.

Sure, she can energize people.

And I was a huge Palin fan, and actually I still am a huge Palin fan AS LONG AS SHE'S GOV OF ALASKA.

A RomneyGingrich or vice versa ticket would be interesting.

Unfortunately, Republicans are idiots, so that will likely not happen.

Gingrich is an idiot. He couldn't shut the fuck up about Clinton's infelidity, and yet he himself had "oral discretions" with another woman while married. What a moron.

oh and that same first marriage ended with him serving his poor wife divorce papers while she was being treated for cancer.

Sure, she can energize people.

And I was a huge Palin fan, and actually I still am a huge Palin fan AS LONG AS SHE'S GOV OF ALASKA.

I honestly just cannot see her making good headway in a national election, against a polished and experienced politician.

Not to mention - with difficulty, I've come to the conclusion that the post of President is just not right for her, nor is she right for it.

i don't think she can succeed this time but i do think she has a real future in the gop.
iirc she is 44 yrs. old and there is ample time for her to mature and galvanize an even greater following.
looking at sleazy o, i would take her in a heartbeat over him.
for one thing, i doubt that she would be on a plane this very night headed to egypt to grovel and apologize to the moslem world again.

oh fer cryin' out loud. This nation is not going to elect a bible thumper or a provincial creationist to be President. Romney, well, maybe, but he already lost last time around. What is needed is NEW candidates. For Republicans to recycle last year's losers is ridiculous. If that's the best they can do, they may as well save us all time and money and not bother to run in 2012.

The Republicans are going to need smart, knowledgeable, charismatic, secular-leaning or at least secular-friendly candidates if they want to have any shot next time around. You cannot beat Obama with a hick. Can't be done.

Yep, she very well may mature. Perhaps she should run for some sort of congress-critter, get a little experience under her belt.

One problem the Republicans have...and more so in the future...is not that the Democrats have a big tent, but their policies give free stuff to a very large tent.

President Bush tried to outspend the Democrats, and look where it got the Republicans. Now we are getting close to 51% of working Americans paying no taxes. Look at how many groups get free stuff from the gov't. Obama throws Sotomayor under the feelings bus in 3... 2...

Speaking of Sotomayor... here's Taranto on the "wise Latina" speech, making the point I was trying to make here some time ago, only more eloquently:

First she says she agrees that judges should try to overcome personal bias. Then she wonders if achieving that goal is possible. By the time we get to "wise Latina woman," she has given up on the aspiration of impartiality altogether and is left hoping that her bias will yield better decisions than other judges' bias.

Sotomayor is right to think that total impartiality is an unachievable goal. That means a good judge is one who never takes it for granted and is always vigilant about his own biases. Sotomayor's comments suggest she has reached the opposite conclusion: Everyone is biased, so there's no point even trying to be impartial. If she really believes that, she does not belong on the Supreme Court.

My girlfriend is from Brazil - same part as Djavan. I could never get tired of her accent. For example. she pronounces "Glasgow Cathedral" as "Glesgow Kettidraw". She says she is embarrassed about how strong her accent is, but I'm glad to say - I don't think she'll ever lose it.

If you want to drive her completely bonkers, make her watch the "Simpsons go to Brazil" episode.

(The Brazilians all have Spanish accents... monkeys on the beach in Rio... etc.)

Washington DC lost touch quite some time ago. It's now all about special interest. We need a fiscally conservative goverment and we can't even get a somewhat fiscally responsible goverment.

343 june_july  Tue, Jun 2, 2009 5:45:28pm

Palin/Huckabee/Romney...

Doesn't matter who the GOP candidates are. If the party can't unify and present a credible fiscally conservative socially tolerant agenda that will attract the 10-20% of Americans who actually vote on issues, not by habit, it will Obama in 2012, and god only knows after that...

I'd take Gingrich over any of them, warts an' all, but he's past his time.

Of course, I'm just a dang fool canuck

As an indy-type, and one who also reads a few lefty blogs, I can say unequivocally that no one on the left is afraid of Palin. Nor Huckabee. They are afraid of (R)s the likes of Crist, and, (until recently), Huntsman.

Huntsman would have been a real threat, with lots of moderate appeal.

I just feel that Palin can never be taken seriously by the electorate. I may be wrong, but it will take a LOT to overcome all the scorn and derision piled on her in the last election cycle. I personally hope for a candidate who's not a fundamentalist ANYthing, someone secular. I don't know who that is yet. I admire Palin, but I really don't think it's possible for her to get elected to national office now.

365 Cheechako  Tue, Jun 2, 2009 6:35:39pm

Gov. Palin's 1st term is up in 2010 along with Senator Murkowski (R). Palin has stated she would be supporting Murkowski's re-election in 2010. So that leads Palin to run for a 2nd term as Governor. Then, she would be available to run against Senator Begich (D) in 2014. A term or 2 in the Senate would then make Palin hard to beat.

Gotta think a long way ahead.

367 _RememberTonyC  Tue, Jun 2, 2009 6:58:11pm

Romney is clearly superior to the other two. If Huckabee is the GOP nominee, he won't get my vote ... EVER. Palin will never get the nomination unless the GOP considers BHO unbeatable in '12 and she is served up as a sacrificial lamb. Pawlenty is sure to get into the race and I'd consider him, but for me, Romney is the man I trust most.

369 Dirk Diggler  Tue, Jun 2, 2009 7:05:50pm

Sharmuta,

I've decided I'm voting for Dick Cheney.

Dick Cheney has rehabilitated himself by taking on the Obama administration. Cheney won't run for national office again, but his speaking tour should serve as a lesson in how to engage the Democrats and the left on the issues. Namely by calling your political opponents out by name when they're completely full of shit. Force them onto the defensive for a change.

Mitt Romney looks like the candidate to watch. He looks presidential, has an extensive executive history in both the public and private sectors, and has considerable gravitas on economic issues, which will probably be front and center in 2012. In addition, he emerged relatively unscathed from the 2008 campaign (as opposed to the scorched earth campaign that the media waged against Palin).

370 Sharmuta  Tue, Jun 2, 2009 7:09:26pm

re: #369 Dirk Diggler

I agree. I'm being tongue-in-cheek, but I do feel Cheney is emerging as a defacto leader right now. He can speak his mind because he's not running for anything. I think Romney is the one fiscal conservatives should watch.

371 soccermom  Tue, Jun 2, 2009 7:13:58pm

Has to be someone who has broad support across Republicans and Independents. Otherwise, Republicans cannot win a national election. I don't think any of these have broad support, except maybe Romney and he's not too exciting. Palin and Huckabee are the Dems dream candidates. Way right with the "base."

373 whirled peas  Tue, Jun 2, 2009 7:39:48pm

If any of the three top the ticket, BHO is a two termer minimum and Prez for life worst case scenario. Romney gives women the creeps, and they are 50% of the electorate. As long as Mormon men are openly "marrying" their own nieces at age 9 in Texas, Utah, Arizona, Canada and elsewhere with the tacit approval of the Elders in Salt Lake, Romney is a no go. Why they don't put the kibosh on polygamy once and for all is a mystery. And what about the disaster he created in Massachusetts with universal healthcare?

If the Republicans continue to be as lame and nutless as they are right now, you have to be smoking medical marijuana to be optimistic about 2010 or 2012.

374 DistantThunder  Tue, Jun 2, 2009 7:43:23pm

I think by the time Obama is done with his economic meddling and foreign policy groveling, people will be throwing rose petals in front of the Republican candidate, especially one like Romney who has had

Business success,
Foreign trade success, and
Executive success.

375 Chekote  Tue, Jun 2, 2009 8:00:57pm

When Romney first came of on the scene, I thought he would make a great candidate. A competent businessman with great knowledge of economic issues. I couldn't understand why he decided to run as the champion of the SoCons. It was a ridiculous approach especially with Huck in the mix. I think Romney is too damaged to make another run.

376 Chekote  Tue, Jun 2, 2009 8:03:43pm

Maybe because it seems at least 40% of the republican party (if you can believe that CNN poll) are of the socon persuasion...I think I'd vote for Dennis Kucinich before voting for 'Big Government and Big Religion' Huckabee.

...and even if the poll is close to true, is it any wonder why the republican party is so marginalized today? Mike Huckabee? Sarah Palin? Are you populistically serious?

That was my thinking as well. Huckabee is a rather exclusionary candidate, offering up the possibility that the only votes the Republican party will get on his ticket will be those of the 'socon persuasion'. . .which would mean another term of Democrat Presidency.

I'd really like to see a candidate who can represent a wider range of Americans.

387 Land Shark  Wed, Jun 3, 2009 8:43:32am

I'm more focused on the 2010 Congressional Elections right now. It's still too early to think about the 2012 campaign. The 2010 will give us an idea if the GOP is getting it's act together, if it has a shot in 2012 but even that is a year and half away.

Chenney/Palin or Chenney/Gingrich in 2012! Just kiddin', I don't think Chenney will run. Too bad.
