Well, that explains it...

Perhaps he's gone Skoptsy

From the Khlysty came the Skoptsy, who believed that Adam and Eve were created sexless, and that reproduction organs only appeared after humanity had been tempted by Satan. Accordingly, in order "to avoid sexual temptation and sin" the group's men castrated themselves. Just to be on the safe side, they also cut off women's breasts.

The sect also distorted biblical texts, referring to Christ not as the redeemer (iskupitel) but the castrator (oskopitel), and stated that Jesus had himself been relived of his sexual organs by John the Baptist.

The late Russian academic Andrei Sinyavsky claimed in "Ivan the Fool - Russian Folk Belief" that the Skoptsy believed that anyone who castrated twelve people was guaranteed a place in heaven, irrespective of any other sins he may have committed. Soviet dissident Sinyavsky, in his quite remarkable study of Russian religious history, wrote that they even went so far as to pay peasants to let them "strike off the serpent."

re: #116 Dianna

The practice goes far, far back in time...(there's also the Egyptian goddess Isis -- she loved Osiris, Seth murders Osiris and scatters his parts into the Nile river, (not all the parts were "recovered", since a fish had consumed his penis...etc.)

No, but it is for members, only.

Just checking... seems like some kind of gene was selected out of the pool as a result of this operation.

The young man came from a prominent family in the southern Egyptian province of Qena, one of Egypt's poorest and most conservative areas...

He may have been "conservative" but he was liberal with the knife.

Cybele. And the practice was forbidden for quite an extensive period during the Roman Republic.

Is Cybele the same as Sibyl?

"I saw with my own eyes the Sibyl at Cumae hanging in her cage, and when the boys said, Sibyl, what do you want?, she replied, I want to die."

re: #94 Fat Bastard Vegetarian

You are very sweet today.

Eh... "sweet" has got nothing to do with it. It's just that the more I think about the story, the more awful and tragic it seems.

136 Randall Gross  Tue, Jun 2, 2009 8:24:29pm

and here I was thinking that a bunch of Russian nuts altering the bible so they could worship Christ the Castrator instead of Christ the Redeemer would get a big rise out of you all if you know what I mean.

After unsuccessfully petitioning his father for two years to marry the girl, the man heated up a knife and sliced off his reproductive organ, a police official said.

Hence the old saying "like a hot knife through ... '' whoops, never mind.

re: #111 Sharmuta

I think we take it for granted that our society has evolved where people can marry for love. It's very sad that this isn't the norm for many cultures still.

Absolutely. As absurd as this severing may look like, this was the result of the "dressing" by an extremely oppressive culture. At least he didn't blew himself up with other people.
I hope he'll still enjoy some happiness in life.
