Bad news from Thailand, where David Carradine has been found dead in his hotel room, apparently by his own hand: Kung Fu star Carradine found dead.

Kill Bill and Kung Fu star David Carradine has been found dead in a Bangkok hotel room on Thursday.

Thai police told the BBC the 72-year-old was found naked by a hotel maid in a wardrobe with a cord around his neck and other parts of his body.

The US star was in Thailand filming his latest film, Stretch, according to his personal manager Chuck Binder. Mr Binder said the news was “shocking”, adding: “He was full of life, always wanting to work… a great person.”

A US embassy official confirmed the actor’s death, but added that the cause of death had not yet been established. However, Thai newspaper The Nation reported that police believe the actor took his own life, and preliminary investigations found that he hanged himself.

It sounds, with the remark that the cord was also wrapped "around other parts of his body" like David Karridine might have been an aficionado of the exceedingly dangerous sexu8al fetish known as erotic asphyxiation:

Peter Gibbons: You should come over and watch 'Kung Fu' tonight.

I think it may be a little early for that speculation. It did cross my mind, but I really think we need to wait for a bit more information.

Anyone who has ever seen "The Ruling Class" knows about auto-erotic asphyxiation. This does not sound like suicide but what used to be called "death by mis-adventure". Certainly makes for a funnier story at Carradine family reunions than suicide.

Still, it's a sad end.

May the man be remembered more for the body of cinematic art he performed than the manner of his death. We don't need more Bob Cranes.

I remember when he and Barbara Hershey were together. Don't remember if they were married. That was during that hippie period when she changed her name to Barbara Seagull. I remember a nude pic of them in a magazine (tastefully done--no full frontal) and they had matching gold chains around their waists and flowers in their hair.

The memories of Kung Fu, (or Fung Yu as we called it). Reposted from the ODT:

My freshman year in college, half the dorm floor would be in our room watching Kung Fu.
(We had the only TV on that half of the floor; my roommate's. I had a picture tube brightener from a dead set and that fixed his enough that you could watch it with the lights on.)

Right, his hands, his feet, maybe he got tangled after he "let go." Why do you go into a wardrobe to do this, is that part of the routine? You use a chord, something large enough to strangle you? Hell, he may have been well endowed, but a few feet of string would still probably do it.

Actually, were I going to try hanging myself, and wanted to be sure, I'd arrange the noose, find a way to restrain my hands and then do the deed.

Mostly because I couldn't be sure I'd arranged the noose to cut off blood flow fast enough to keep me from getting loose.

Not until after a reasonable mourning period, and at the VERY least not until after all the facts are known!

Now , that stated it can be debated what a "reasonable mourning period" timeframe is

Film star Albert Dekker was 62 when he killed himself with AEA.

Actually, were I going to try hanging myself, and wanted to be sure, I'd arrange the noose, find a way to restrain my hands and then do the deed.

Mostly because I couldn't be sure I'd arranged the noose to cut off blood flow fast enough to keep me from getting loose.

I would consult my copy of Final Exit for a better method.

It's quite natural to speculate about the circumstances surrounding a surprise death. Just part of how the human mind works. We all have a desire to make sense out of the senseless. Unfortunately, sometimes people take it too far and fail to use critical thinking on these speculations. The Princess Diana and World Trade Center conspiracy theories were, no doubt, born this way.

re: #26 unrealizedviewpoint

Can the keyword system driving this be that good that in seconds it can target the keyword = suicide?

Sure. It selects ads when your browser requests the page, and not only matches the page's current content, but also examines whatever Google happens to know about you - which can be quite a lot, since they record your IP address every time you load one of their ads, along with the page it was associated with. Over time, this builds up quite a profile on your browsing habits, and these get correlated along with page content to figure out which ads you're likely to respond to.

Obviously, the algorithm for matching all that information is immature, at best. But the amount of information Google plows through and accumulates on an hourly basis is staggering.

Google is also, in my opinion, evil. Firefox with AdBlock installed circumvents their ability to collect browsing information, and I always have it on.

I made the mistake of sharing a couple pretty personal things, and you still insist on judging me and much I deeply know an actor. You're right, I don't know him - do you feel better know? I certainly do not know this first hand, and I can't say I believe it, but I have heard that drowning is somehow not that bad, maybe it has something to do with the womb. I will say that I have had dreams (while sleeping) of drowning, and after the initial gag factor, the water that filled my lungs sort of equalized and it was like I was floating in space, no pain. Like I said I have no idea if this is true.

re: #13 Dianna

I think it may be a little early for that speculation. It did cross my mind, but I really think we need to wait for a bit more information.

What "more information" do you think is likely to be coming?

Eyewitness accounts? Videotape footage?

Testimony from close friends and colleagues about Mr. Carridine's "personal" habits?

The guy was found dead with a cord around his neck and "little" Bill.

Suicides and murders don't involving binding the genitals.

That leaves only two plausible possibilities for this situation.

The most obvious is that he was a practitioner of auto-erotic asphyxiation and accidentally died while doing it. Apparently, this is not uncommon, as it takes some pretty serious strangulation to "get there", and its easy to be "distracted" while you are doing it, if you follow.

The other is that someone else was "playing" too, killed Carridine deliberately (or accidentally), then left the scene afterwards.

I doubt it. People who are dehydrated usually become lethargic and it can be over in a matter of hours.

What a day...first site I check in the a.m. (instapundit) informs me of the death of one of my favorite blues personalities ever,Koko Taylor. So glad I got to see her a dozen times. Then this. Like some others here, the tv series "Kung Fu" and the movies of Bruce Lee that were around at the time spurred a great interest in Chinese ( pre-Communist ) history, culture, and philosophy. For me, I was inspired in all those areas and recall clearly ,after watching the pilot episode of the series with him, telling my father "I want to do that". I was 14...I found a Shifu in the area of New York I was in and began to walk the Path. Now, all these years later, I accomplished that which I set out on having been through a number of teachers. I live the life and have no clue as to what life would be like or who I would be as a person if I was not now a "ming jai " ( old master ). I am hopeful that this death of his was not what it appears to be on the surface, but death is death. Unlike many actors, Carradine at least began study under David Chang , the advisor on the series( and later, other Shifus) and became a legitimate Yellow Sash ( equal to a blackbelt) practitioner. He was effected by his own role as Kwai Chang and found a path to follow as result of the role. Quite a mindbender this one is. As others have said - RIP Grasshopper.

I just tossed it out there since its theoretically possible that someone else was participating, or killed Carridine setting up the scene to LOOK like auto-erotic asphyxiation.

Realistically, Occam's razor probably eliminates the likelihood that anyone else was involved. Killing someone by strangulation is not so easy, not necessarily quiet, and in the real world cases like that almost always involve a lovers quarrel.

A proper investigation should be able to tell if anyone else was seen hanging around, entering his room, if the room were disturbed indicated a struggle, or if there were any other sort of forensic evidence left at the scene. There probably should be an autopsy, and that could involve a toxicologic exam to look for drugs (as a possible contributing factor).

Barring evidence of any of those things, you have no choice but to conclude the obvious.

So while we don't have all the facts in this case, based on the ones already presented if I were the Medical examiner in this case, I'd have no problem with a medicolegal determination here.

I'm so sorry to hear about the pooch, but your wife is a good woman. It's really hard to make that decision, even when your brain tells you it's the right thing to do.

We put our dog Falstaff down not long ago - for very similar reasons. The only good thing was that our vet is such a terrific guy that he came to the house, so Falstaff could be with his two pals (Henry and Cujo) all the way to the end. And, to avoid the stress of being taken someplace strange and frightening.

re: #223 oldschool

You're post makes a couple of assumptions.

First of all, if this was a case of auto-erotic asphyxiation, his death was an accident, not deliberate. Again, for all we know, he might have been happy as a clam and getting away with this for 50 years.

Next, how do you know this guy "had it all"? He may have been a famous actor, but as you well know, that's certainly no guarantee of happiness. Plenty of actors are depressed, lonely, angry, abuse substances, etc. He may have made plenty of money too, but again lots of people make lots of money, then spend/waste all of it, ending up with nothing.

I think one of the saddest things to happen is to hang yourself and for no one to miss you. That happened down the road from me. One of the neighbor's dogs brought home a leg bone, the guy called police, they searched nearby and found the rest of the skeletal remains. Police identified him through dental records. Well, from a publicists' standpoint, there aren't a lot of good ways to "spin" this, are there? Given the alternatives, that's probably the best option.

Its kind of sad that this is likely to become part of Carradine's legacy now. In 20 years, he may be as remembered for this accident as much as for "Kung Fu".

I should also point out there is a realistic chance that there was some other medical contributing factor here, other than simple strangulation.

Perhaps Mr. Carradine's "excitement" caused a heart attack, or arrythmia, for example. The latter would be extremely difficult to prove in autopsy, though the former might be proved. If so, his actual manner of death might better be classified as "natural" rather that "accidental".

'Grasshopper' thing although all of my friends signed up for karate classes at the time. Getting together and watching the show was a weekly ritual for them - I stayed home and played solitaire.
I really enjoyed "Bound for Glory" and thought he did an excellent job. Funny though, I always felt a 'kinship' to him - since the 70's I've been told countless times I could be his twin. Although not a handsome man in the 'classic' sense of the word, fame, fortune and charisma got him plenty of willing females. If this was a sexual mis adventure all I can say is I pray I'm not still pursuing such when I'm 72 ! Enough already ! BTW, no one had speculated on the possibility that he was 'not alone' when he passed on. After all, this did happen in Bangkok. It could have been an "Uh, oh...so sorry dude, I'm outta here, I'm still on parole !" ya know ? And maybe not. He may have got a recent Dx of cancer - he was a lifetime cigarette smoker - 72 is a pretty good run ! From the little I know of him he seemed to be a 'spiritual' kinda guy - one would think if he was going to 'do it' it would be with booze & pills. Hanging oneself is pretty vicious. Maybe he was expecting another 'come back' with this movie and, after viewing the daily rushes, sensed it was 'all over' for him. All speculation and I mean no harm to his memory. The truth will be known soon and all this speculation will be forgotten.

It gets on my nerves sooo bad that I'm now 'anti sex' for the 1st time in my life. Embarrassing and to me no longer cool. When I was a young man out on the town with the ladies invariably some geezer with a bad comb over, shirt un-buttoned down to the navel and a gold chain with astrological sign pendant dangling, just had to stop by my table and make a fool of himself:
'Hello, can I buy you lovely ladies a drink ?'
"Hey grandpa take a freakin' hike before I put you in your wheel chair" ... "But I don't have a wheelchair"...'Come back over here one more time and you will need one"' and then make a friend promise that if I ever wind up that age acting like this, "promise me you will put 2 in my skull". I'm only in my 50's but wise enough to know if a sweet young thang comes a callin', stop, take a deep breath, look in the mirror and then ask yourself "what does she really want from me ?"

For better or for verse,
my statement here is terse
He's Carradine
I'm Karridine
It really could be worse...

But I woke up this morning (just now, 0630 BKK) to the TV talking heads telling us the sanitized version of the circumstances of his passing...

...reminded me that back in 1973, when the FIRST 'Kung Fu' was aired (72?) I was studying for my doctorate and my housemate's younger brother SHAVED HIS HEAD to emulate David Carradine... bizarre times, good times...

Thank you, David... Rest in Peace!

I was trying to remember what other famous older gentleman 'checked out' not long ago at a hotel while on location in a not too glamorous fashion ...

John Entwistle - bass player for "The Who". Another reserved, uber hip kinda guy. You don't want to do this to your families guys - give it up and go out with some class at least...or, if you have the $$, make sure you have someone on your personal staff to 'clean things up' before the authorities get there ! Nice. Grandpa was found ...blah, blah, blah...do it 'for the kids' for the love of Pete...

Actually, Leftover, with the Thai tourist trade in the TANK and down the tubes because of the December Debacle (Yellow-Shirt thugs take-over of Thailand's airports, stranding 163,000 angry travellers) this room could well become an overnight phenomenon, bringing people on pilgrimage to 'the place where HE spent his last night in contemplation... wrapped in thought...'

I would be very interested on your take of Descartes, grasshoppers. Or "Cogito Ergo Sum", Stinky.

Regards,
enormodome

"as a result of the principles already established in his method, had first of all to seek out a solid starting point (a clear and distinct concrete idea), and from this opens his deductive process. To arrive at this solid starting point, he begins with methodical doubt, that is, a doubt which will be the means of arriving at certitude. This differs from the systematic doubt of the Skeptics, who doubt in order to remain in doubt.

I can doubt all the impressions that exist within my knowing faculties, whether they be those impressions which come to me through the senses or through the intellect. Indeed, I may doubt even mathematical truths, in so far as it could be that the human intelligence is under the influence of a malignant genius which takes sport in making what is objectively irrational appear to me as rational.

Doubt is thus carried to its extreme form. But notwithstanding this fact, doubt causes to rise in me the most luminous and indisputable certainty. Even presupposing that the entire content of my thought is false, the incontestable truth is that I think: one cannot doubt without thinking; and if I think, I exist: "Cogito ergo sum."

It is to be observed that for Descartes the validity of "Cogito ergo sum" rests in this, that the doubt presents intuitively to the mind the subject who doubts, that is, the thinking substance. In this, Cartesian doubt differs from that of St. Augustine ("Si fallor, sum"), which embodies a truth sufficiently strong to overcome the position of Skepticism. In Descartes, "Cogito ergo sum" is assumed, not only in order to overcome the Skeptic position but as a foundation for the primary reality (the existence of the "res cogitans"), from which the way to further research is to be taken.

This is the point which distinguishes the classic realistic philosophy from Cartesian and modern philosophy. With Descartes, philosophy ceases to be the science of being, and becomes the science of thought (epistemology). Whereas, at first, being conditioned thought, now it is thought that conditions being. This principle, more or less realized by the philosophers immediately following Descartes, was to reach its full consciousness in Kant and modern Idealism. (See: Meditations on First Philosophy, I and II; Discourse on Method, IV.)"

The more recent version of the story is pretty explicit:

Thai police: Carradine death may be accidental

By MICHAEL CASEY –

BANGKOK (AP) — The body of American actor David Carradine, best known for the 1970s TV series "Kung Fu," was found in a hotel room closet with a rope tied to his neck and genitals, and his death may have been accidental suffocation, Thai police said Friday.

The 72-year-old actor's body was discovered Thursday in his luxury suite at Bangkok's Swissotel Nai Lert Park Hotel. Police initially said they suspected suicide, though Carradine's associates had questioned that theory.

Police Lt. Gen. Worapong Chewprecha told reporters that Carradine was found with a rope "tied around his penis and another rope around his neck."

"The two ropes were tied together," he said. "It is unclear whether he committed suicide or not or he died of suffocation or heart failure due to an orgasm."
