Good to see a newborn.
Poaching pressure escalated during the 1970s and 1980s as a result of the rising demand for rhino horn in Asia and the Middle East and between 1970 and 1992, the black rhino suffered a 96% decline in numbers. Three subspecies are listed as Critically Endangered in the IUCN (World Conservation Union) Red List, while the fourth is listed as Probably Extinct.[Link: www.panda.org...]

German zoo: Gay penguin pair raising chick
Jun. 4, 2009 12:34 PM
Associated Press
BERLIN - A German zoo says a pair of gay male penguins are raising a chick from an egg abandoned by its parents.
Bremerhaven zoo veterinarian Joachim Schoene says the egg was placed in the male penguins' nest after its parents rejected it in late April. The males incubated it for some 30 days before it hatched and have continued to care for it. The chick's gender is not yet known.

Cameron Diaz wants to change butt, planet
Jun. 4, 2009 02:49 PM
Bang Showbiz
Cameron Diaz wants a bigger butt.
The 'My Sister's Keeper' star is not a fan of plastic surgery, but often contemplates getting buttock implants to make her derriere rounder.
She said: "I'd love a bigger butt, more meat on my bones. I'd love to be more voluptuous. It's just not my body type."
But for now the 36-year-old actress - who is reportedly dating Maroon 5 singer Adam Levine - is far more interested in giving the world a makeover.
She explained: "The planet needs a publicist. It's the planet, you know what I mean? She should be a star. How do we make this little planet of ours a big star? I want everybody to know who she is."

NY store owner gives would-be thief $40 and bread
Jun. 3, 2009 09:12 AM
Associated Press
GARDEN CITY, N.Y. - A rifle-toting convenience store owner said he decided to show mercy on a would-be robber after seeing the man collapse into tears and claim he was only committing the crime to support his starving family.
The Long Island store owner provided the bat-wielding man with $40 and a loaf of bread and made him promise never to rob again.
"This was a grown man, crying like a baby," Mohammad Sohail, owner of the Shirley Express convenience store about 65 miles east of New York City, told The Associated Press in a telephone interview on Tuesday.

SHIRLEY, N.Y. - A New York convenience store owner who made headlines after showing mercy on a would-be robber has been accused of selling drug paraphernalia.
Shirley Express owner Mohammad Sohail's store on Long Island was one of seven businesses cited Tuesday. He's accused of violating state business laws.
Prosecutors say undercover officers bought bongs and pipe screens at the store three times in recent weeks.

Food junk: After Oregon crash, snacks get pitched
Jun. 3, 2009 12:11 PM
Associated Press
PORTLAND, Ore. - When Little Debbie went topsy-turvy, 2,000 cases of snack food went to waste. Was that necessary?
A truck with the country girl logo on its side crashed Monday on Oregon 217 near Portland.
It was carrying the namesake cakes and other treats. All remained boxed and sealed. The driver was cited for speeding.
Tennessee manufacturer McKee Foods says the Oregon Department of Transportation was in a hurry to reopen a ramp over Interstate 5, so it unloaded the truck to tip it upright and exposed the snacks to the ground and heavy machinery.

Human rights council condemns Hamas for using civilians as human shields
Israel last night scored a major propaganda coup when the UN human rights council praised its victory over the Hamas rulers of Gaza and refused calls to investigate allegations of war crimes by both sides in the final chapter of a bloody 25-year conflict.
In a shock move, which dismayed western nations critical of Israel's approach, the Jewish state's diplomats succeeded in lobbying enough of its European allies to pass a resolution describing the conflict as a "domestic matter that doesn't warrant outside interference".

Student's marijuana speech ends with flourish and trip to jail
Jun. 3, 2009 06:20 PM
McClatchy Newspapers
TACOMA, Wash. - The teachers wanted persuasive.
And they got it.
At the end of his speech Tuesday urging legalization of marijuana, a 17-year-old Peninsula High School student pulled out a joint, lit it and smoked away. Then he ate the remains.
For that he got a quick escort to the school office and then a ride to Remann Hall juvenile jail.
The stunt was celebrated among some of the teen's peers but was frowned on to say the least by law enforcement officers and district administrators.
"We believe in freedom of speech and encourage it, but illegal activities are absolutely not going to be tolerated in our district," schools Superintendent Terry Bouck said.
Pierce County sheriff's spokesman Ed Troyer said, "If people want that law changed, they need to go about it the right way."
He did acknowledge, though, that the student's action will prompt discussion.

Wait a second. There appear to be some serious shenanigans going on here.
I posted a link to this story when it first came out. At that time, the main point of the story wasn't just how merciful the shopowner was by giving the man some bread and some money. It was also that, after this happened, the robber supposedly was so grateful that he said he wanted to become a Muslim, like the storeowner. So the storeowner had him say a little oath, and pronounced him a Muslim convert. CNN.com had a version of that story (written by a "progressive Muslim" reporter) that they pumped all the way to their main headline for a while.
Now that the guy's a peddler of drug paraphernalia, don't the references to his Muslim faith seem to be vanishing?

Dad watches triplets graduate live from Iraq
Jun. 1, 2009 08:54 AM
Associated Press
FAYETTE COUNTY, Ga. - Triplets Kyle, Corey and Sean Cooke graduated from Whitewater High School Friday night, and like the other graduates there, their parents were watching with beaming pride.
The big difference is that their father was watching from nearly 7,000 miles away at Camp Victory in Baghdad.
In partnership with the high school and NBC, WXIA 11Alive streamed the ceremony live on its Web site, as well as a live stream of Air Force Captain William Cooke watching from Baghdad where he is stationed.
Cooke stood up when the national anthem was played at the outdoor ceremony on the Whitewater football field, with the stands packed with family and friends. He beamed when the anthem was concluded with an Air Force flyover of the football field.
Kyle, Corey and Sean knew their dad was watching from Camp Victory, but immediately after they walked across the stage to get their diplomas, they were surprised with the opportunity to talk with him in Baghdad via the Web link.

Grand View coffee shop indeed!
Topless [Maine] coffee shop gutted by overnight fire
Jun. 3, 2009 12:19 PM
Associated Press
A deliberately set fire destroyed a topless coffee shop early Wednesday, just hours after the owner talked with local officials about making the business more like a strip club, investigators said.
The fire at the Grand View Topless Coffee Shop was reported just before 1 a.m. by an ambulance that happened to be driving past.
The state fire marshal's office concluded it was arson after investigators, aided by a specially trained dog, sifted through the shop's ruins. Officials would not say how or where the fire started, but said evidence was taken to the state police crime lab for analysis.
The coffee shop featured waiters and waitresses without shirts serving coffee and doughnuts. Owner Donald Crabtree had met Tuesday night with planning officials to discuss adding a disc jockey, expanding parking and extending the hours of operation.
Crabtree said he spent $277,000 buying and renovating the former motel in Vassalboro, just north of Augusta. It wasn't insured, he said. He and six others who live in the old motel escaped the fire unharmed.
Crabtree said he's determined to reopen his business.
“I'll keep going. ... I've got some girls out of work and I'm going to do all I can to get in there,” Crabtree said.

Okay, here is the original WCBS version of the story about the robber who asked to convert to Islam after the shopkeeper he was robbing gave him $40 and some bread. Click the video on the right to watch it (there's a short commercial first).
LGF member "Memphis" called this out as possibly fake right from the start. What do you think? Is your opinion changed at all by the fact that the a weeks-long investigation of drug paraphernalia sales at the man's store ended the VERY NEXT DAY after this story hit the airwaves? And that he's due to be fined for some amount up to $30,000, but that the amount of the fine may depend on how much of a good guy he is?

This was CNN's version of the story: Merciful storekeeper changes robber's mind, religion. That was literally the headline story on CNN.com's front page for a number of hours.
You know what I think? I think Mohammed Sohail staged the whole thing to get some good press for himself, knowing that he was about to get busted for selling rolling papers. And knowing that his fine could range from zero to $30,000, depending on whether or not he was seen as an icky immigrant ne'er-do-well who would be victimized by Islamophobia, or a devoutly religious, kindhearted, community-minded guy who, not being from these parts, had no idea that those funny little "Zig-Zag" thingies were immoral.
I think he got a little too caught up in the hoax, and added the over-the-top part about the robber asking to convert to Islam. And that's when CNN's Kiran Khalid picked up the story and decided to turn it into a pro-Muslim PR piece to run as CNN's headline.

The Obama administration plans to appoint a "Special Master for Compensation" to ensure that companies receiving federal bailout funds are abiding by executive-pay guidelines, according to people familiar with the matter.
The administration is expected to name Kenneth Feinberg, who oversaw the federal government's compensation fund for victims of the Sept. 11, 2001, terrorist attacks, to act as a pay czar for the Treasury Department.

OK, step back from the brink for a moment, the guy was caught sell bongs. He may have not even known it was against the law, but at the worst, he'd get a slap on the wrist.
To find a accomplice to help him stage a video and take the risk of being arrested seems a stretch. I think you missed my point. If the store owner was not invoked in a big conspirancy, like Joe, he'll be screwed by the press for doing the right thing. Granted, he should have left the bong sales to the internet and head shops, but it's not like he was selling crack.

re: #189 avanti
OK, step back from the brink for a moment, the guy was caught sell bongs. He may have not even known it was against the law, but at the worst, he'd get a slap on the wrist.
To find a accomplice to help him stage a video and take the risk of being arrested seems a stretch. More likely, the press started snooping around like they did with Joe the Plumber and found some dirt. I'm not saying your conspiracy theory is wrong, but I'll withhold judgment while the press goes through the store owners tax records. :)
My conspiracy theory may be wrong (okay, there's a very good chance that it's wrong). But what would make you think the press would "Joe the Plumber" him? It was the press that decided to make him into a hero in the first place. The investigation into his store had been going on for weeks, and he was cited after the original story came out, not before. So it's not like the press started digging into his past to find something. Also, although the storeowner isn't facing any jail time, he could be fined up to $30,000. That's more than a slap on the wrist, for a guy who sells bongs in a convenience store for a living and gives away his inventory for free to armed robbers.
Anyway, the whole original video just looks fishy to me. I mean, why would a robber say "you are so generous, I want to be a Muslim just like you?" I mean, how would anyone know the guy is a Muslim just by looking at him? He doesn't have a beard or wear any religious garb... he looks and sounds like he's most likely of Indian descent, to the untrained observer... I think at the very least, Sohail may have invented the part about the robber spontaneously asking to convert to Islam. And, if nothing else, isn't it weird how the pre-bong versions of the story focused mostly on the "I wanna be a Muslim" angle, but the post-bong versions omit any mention of that (at least, the two versions I saw omitted it).
I'm calling possible shenanigans.

A Americanized version of a ancient Chinese game that was played with tiles, now cards. Pai Gow is played with two hands, a high and low hand against the dealer, oriental poker has a high, middle and low hand. Very hard to learn since you split aces on occasion, 4 card straights and flushes, and a joker and bonus bets.
Typically my friend and I are the only Caucasians in the room and she taught me how to play.

Now Fizzbin, that's a real man's game.
////
Here are some of the rules:
# Each player gets six cards, except for the player on the dealer's right, who gets seven.
# The second card is turned up, except on Tuesdays.
# Two jacks are a "half-fizzbin".
# If you have a half-fizzbin:
* a third jack is a "shralk" and results in disqualification;
* one wants a king and a deuce, except at night, when one wants a queen and a four;
* if a king had been dealt, the player would get another card, except when it is dark, in which case he'd have to give it back.
# The top hand is a "royal fizzbin", but the odds of getting one are said to be "astronomical".

Good lord, you're right. And they also have something called an "Oxygen Mini O2 Handheld Portable Vaporizer." I think it's some sort of a high-tech pipe. Here's the blurb:
Portable meets affordable in the Oxygen Mini vaporizer from Vapir. This sleek unit is about 6 inches long making it perfect for use on the go. Like all Vapir vaporizers, these units feature digital temperature control. This allows you to adjust and maintain the heat of the unit, ensuring the release of all the active ingredients in your herbs.
Here's one of the user reviews:
This is a decent product for the money. This is really a personal unit, and wouldn't be good for parties. It is somewhat time consuming to load at first. For one or two people, this is a great purchase, however. It makes a nice vapor, and helps me conserve my supply of natural herbs.
Things have certainly changed in the world. Don't kids make pipes out of old beer cans or cored-out apples or potatoes or whatever?

I was reading before going to sleep and came across something that really bothers me about this recent trip to the middle east ...
I remember when Hillary Clinton went to China ... she made a speech about Women's Rights ...
"It is time for us to say here in Beijing, and the world to hear, that it is no longer acceptable to discuss women's rights as separate from human rights," Mrs. Clinton told the Fourth World Conference on Women assembled here.
"It is a violation of human rights when babies are denied food, or drowned, or suffocated, or their spines broken, simply because they are born girls," Mrs. Clinton said, or "when women and girls are sold into slavery or prostitution for human greed.
"It is a violation of human rights when women are doused with gasoline, set on fire and burned to death because their marriage dowries are deemed too small" she continued, or "when thousands of women are raped in their own communities and when thousands of women are subjected to rape as a tactic or prize of war."
***
I guess we are more afraid of the middle east than China ...
Would she have given this speech today in Egypt? ... Why did Obama not address more of these issues? Will he later? ... Probably not ... and Hillary walks behind him with the scarf on her head ...
Sad ... losing faith in all politicians ... all of them ...

I don't think I'm yet at the age where my memory can't go all the way back to 2003, but I'm pretty sure the Bush Administration was emphasising the link between terrorists in general and the Hussein regime. The other chem teacher was an idiot - they DID get away with stuff on him.

Another "Deep Thought" moment from another of the Hollywood elites:
Sandra Bullock expected her now-husband to be 'obese'
Jun. 4, 2009 02:53 PM
Bang Showbiz
Sandra Bullock thought her husband would be "obese with a handlebar mustache".
The 'Proposal' actress met spouse Jesse James - who she married in July 2005 - when she visited his motorbike store in California and expected him to be a stereotypical biker.
She said: "I took my godson to visit his company. I had an image of an obese guy with a handlebar mustache.
"I think most of us are raised with preconceived notions of the choices we're supposed to make. We waste so much time making decisions based on someone else's idea of our happiness - what will make you a good citizen or a good wife or daughter or actress. Nobody says, 'Just be happy - go be a cobbler or go live with goats.' "

More on the on-going nature of Canadian "justice"...An accused foster mother who had in her custody a 3 year old child, was alleged to have -- days prior to the child's death -- to have put the child (in a diaper) in a garage in freezing, minus degree weather, that was to stop the child from crying; later, she claimed that the toddler hit its head on the toilet (forensics suggested that it wasn't "an accident") -- the child died. The female has now been charged, tried, and convicted in the death of this child. The sentence? 3 years. The female intends to appeal her onerous sentence. Also, thanks to Canada's "justice" system, the convicted criminal's name will never be released to the public...Yet more in terms of "anonymity." (What's next? secret show "trials"?)

Jackson, these are some excellent points you have made. I, too, have hope that this administration will come out in support of right for ALL women, not just the ones who can be used as fodder for political manipulation. It's quite clear from 0bama's speech this morning that his desire to speak out for the rights of the women of Islam are far eclipsed by Hillary's (and by extension, his) concern for the women of China. It is also clear that 0bama's political agenda re the Middle East has far more to do with ingratiating himself to the powers that be instead of being a staunch defender of Israel and women's rights.

Today in Obama's speech, he called the iraq war a "war of choice." But he also said the people of iraq were better off without being under saddam's thumb. So why didn't he tie the two together by saying America fought a war of choice and the choice was to liberate 25,000,000 iraqis (nearly all of the muslim faith) from a tyrannical government. That really pissed me off. It showed that he can't give George Bush even the slightest bit of credit and also that he couldn't also praise our soldiers for their humanity in helping the iraqi people.

Yeah. O the irony...it's due to an Alberta law which prohibits the press from giving out the names of children (whether the children are victims of a crime, or the children are perpetrators of a crime)...they're assured anonymity...the rationale is so that a child's reputation would not be tarnished, the child's life ruined, etc. but then, it was extended to even the adult perps who attack children, the perp's names are also not published...(i'm assuming, again, it's to protect "the children"). In this case, the biological father of the child says he wants the foster mother's name published -- his child his dead, so withholding the perp's name can hardly be because it's necessary to protect the child's "reputation"...But, of course, the name isn't going to be released..(actually, I'm at a real loss in attempting to figure out Canadian "justice" -- I was born and raised in the United States -- much of this stuff is really beyond bizarre.)

Met this police officer that was part of the commission to change the Young Offenders Act to the present one. Didn't happen and the new act is even worse at coddling youths then the old one was.

re: #336 pink freud
The federal court in Quebec charged a person from Rwanda with "crimes against humanity," "war crimes", and "genocide." Then, the "judge" heard so-called "evidence" from a series of anonymous "witnesses." (It's almost funny...) the fellow was indeed convicted, based, in part, on the testimony of anonymous accusers -- he has no way of knowing who they were/are...(I'm really wondering about his "defense" attorney? from what law school did that person graduate from?) (then there's some ridiculous law in Nova Scotia which enables people to be evicted from their own homes based on, once again, anonymous accusers -- the neighbors file complaints to the police, the police don't have to bother with all that legal stuff like arresting people or finding actual evidence -- no, they just go to a judge and get an "eviction order." lol...then they send out the police crew to evict the person and board up the house (even if the guy owns the house...yeah, the neighbors, though, don't like him...the only relevant bit of info which trumps all other considerations.) Then, of course, there are those Star Chambers -- the so-called Human Rights Tribunals -- omg -- Ezra Levant has detailed these utter travesties in his book: "Shakedown." I once had a list of all the "human rights" which were routinely violated by the Human Rights Tribunals...over a dozen of them...(and it just keeps getting more and more goofy up here...)

Yes, I saw it. And you can now expect the other Dutch parties to form a cordon sanitaire and refuse to cooperate with the PVV.
The Belgians did that when Vlaams Blok started gaining momentum in the 80s. Hopefully the Dutch will follow suit.

re: #351 J.S.
WOW. I had no idea. I know more of the Ezra Levant story because we covered it here, but I did not know things were this bad. Thanks for that info.

It seems (from my perspective, anyway) that many serious criminals (if they're Canadian) get off lightly (pat on the wrist -- kill a three year old, get 3 years); meanwhile, publish some cartoons that might be deemed "offensive", and, hey, you're looking at massive legal bills, years of litigation, possible contempt of court charges; or offend your neighbors, and you'll lose your house, etc., etc. Justice is turned on its head...(meanwhile enormous resources are being expended in ensuring that Omar Khadr -- the "child" -- at Gitmo is "immediately returned to Canada." Yeah, we bend over backwards for the benefit of terrorists/murderers, etc, "the terrorists' 'rights' are being abused! they've been tortured!" but won't spend a dime on actual, legitimate civil rights for Canadian citizens facing Tribunals, etc. I don't get it.)

Okay, you got me. I never thought that a rhino could be cute.
Same here! I've always thought rhinos, along with hippos, were as ugly as an animal can get without being an insect, but that little feller is actually quite cute.

Every year for my wife's bday we used to take the Wild Animal Park jeep tour in San Diego. One year, they had a baby black rhino. It was running around chasing the giraffes. It was the cutest/funniest thing I ever saw. I need to find that video and post it.
