One reaction that I thought was somewhat insightful was someone who saw the optimism in the fact that Obama is pursuing a peace deal this early in his Administration, rather than before leaving office (as a legacy builder).
The problem with that approach is this: Presidents will go for foreign policy when the domestic situation is screwed up - it’s a refuge, and none is greater than the ME Peace Process. You get to stand up before a crowd, make a few pronouncements, and move on. Everyone focuses on that, and ignores the domestic mess (like the 9%+ unemployment rate, and the ongoing failure of the porkfest to arrest the rising unemployment), massive deficits, and an ambitious spending program that is unsustainable.
Some, like Clinton, were able to jump on the peace process early in their administrations after others did the hard work - like in Oslo, where most of the work was done in backchannels in a sleepy Norwegian town instead of under the bright lights of Camp David, the White House, or other public locale.
And the fact is that he didn’t add anything to the process that will make it successful. He’s pushing the same nonsense and he’s still ignoring that one of the two parties to the conflict would like to see Israel destroyed.

Israel trying to control the speech (and yanking the microphone the moment Obama says something it doesn’t like).
Illogical to say the least, but it’s typical of the anti-Israel anti-Semitic tripe found daily in Arab/Muslim papers around the world.

It’s really no different than what the antisemitic and Fox contributor Michael Scheuer wrote at his column:
…For his part, Mr. Obama loyally stood by the traditions of the status quo U.S. foreign policy in the Middle East that Americans have suffered under for thirty-five years. First, Obama cleared his trip and speech with Prime Minister Netanyahu in Washington before departing; then he said in Cairo that the Israel-U.S. bond is unbreakable; and now he is finishing up his trip with a pilgrimage to a Nazi concentration camp. In other words, Obama made it crystal clear to all but the willfully blind that Israel’s interests come first for the U.S. government, and it surely is only simple-minded Americans and Muslims who would believe the White House-planted stories about how Obama’s decision not to visit Israel on this trip is a signal of his intention to be tough with Israel. (Re Obama’s statement that he views Israeli settlements as “illegitimate” — does anyone really think that the AIPAC-owned Congress will allow him to try to stop that which he considers “illegitimate”?)…

I have known Islam on three continents before coming to the region where it was first revealed. That experience guides my conviction that partnership between America and Islam must be based on what Islam is, not what it isn’t. And I consider it part of my responsibility as president of the United States to fight against negative stereotypes of Islam wherever they appear.
Wouldn’t it be fun if at his next press conference, someone were to ask President Obama:
1) Do you consider Islam to be a “revealed” religion?
2) Does your Administration actually seek a “partnership” between the United States of America, and Islam? If so, do you also seek such partnerships with any other religions? And how do you reconcile this with the Establishment Clause?
3) Could you please point out the provision of Article II of the U.S. Constitution that describes one of the President’s responsibilities as “fighting negative stereotypes about Islam”? I’d never go there, I just know my smart ass attitude would get me in trouble. Wouldn’t it be fun if at his next press conference, someone were to ask President Obama:
1) Do you consider Islam to be a “revealed” religion?
If the answer to 1 is yes, that would tend to make him an unusual sort of christian (of course, there was that loony multi-culti woman who claimed to be a christian pastor and a muslim at once. But more likely it is the sort of wishy-washy political correctness that leads every news agency to sign on to Mohammed being a prophet, when that sort of begs the question of Islam’s absolute truth more than a little.

re: #14 lawhawk
Daniel Pipes likes to quote:
Irving Kristol memorably took the Latin proverb, Quem Iuppiter vult perdere, dementat prius (“Whom Jupiter wishes to destroy, he first renders mad”) and changed it to “Whom the gods would destroy they first tempt to resolve the Arab-Israeli conflict.”

I don’t care who they are, or what they were doing. Even if they drove a tank over the border and were eating the bodies of the border guards they shot when they were captured, I don’t care. Threat denial is kind of anti-evolutionary, actually. You know the old saw about humans being afraid of noises in the grass because they used to be the sign of predators, then still being afraid of them when the predators were perceived to be “gone”?
It’s kind of like that. We still jump when we hear a hiss, but we don’t really expect a snake to be there. This time we’ve really got a snake and we’re ignoring the rustle in the weeds.
This goes for Israel (pardon the collective “we”, I’m not Jewish) and the U.S.

65 years ago today.
Message from General Eisenhower:
Soldiers, Sailors and Airmen of the Allied Expeditionary Force!
You are about to embark upon the Great Crusade, toward which we have striven these many months. The eyes of the world are upon you. The hopes and prayers of liberty-loving people everywhere march with you. In company with our brave Allies and brothers-in-arms on other Fronts, you will bring about the destruction of the German war machine, the elimination of Nazi tyranny over the oppressed peoples of Europe, and security to yourselves in a free world.
Your task will not be an easy one. Your enemy is well trained, well equipped and battle-hardened. He will fight savagely.
But this is the year 1944! Much has happened since the Nazi triumphs of 1940-41. The United Nations have inflicted upon the Germans great defeats, in open battle, man-to-man. Our air offensive has seriously reduced their strength in the air and their capacity to wage war on the ground. Our Home Fronts have given us an overwhelming superiority in weapons and munitions of war, and placed at our disposal great reserves of trained fighting men. The tide has turned! The free men of the world are marching together to Victory!
I have full confidence in your courage, devotion to duty and skill in battle. We will accept nothing less than full Victory!
Good Luck! And let us all beseech the blessing of Al mighty God upon this great and noble undertaking.

Supreme Allied Commander of the Allied Expeditionary Force (SHAEF),

Then how do you explain the semi-permanence of Ann “Orexia” Coulter’s evil skull-with-skin, seeing how this may be the first mention of her in a week?
It’s a stupid assumption that people concerned with international, or just American, security are also automatically followers of hers. No matter what the overlap may be, it’s still a stupid assumption.

Google tracks other things besides page content. Number of clicks on a given ad, and the history of the person loading the page correlated against other pages with Google ads that they’ve loaded (yes, they track such things) all come into play.
Google is evil.
Pretty standard practice. Clear out your Cookies now and then, and it’s not a problem.

I was unable to figure it out from the cartoon, but it apparently means “Jews Attempting to Disrupt Obama’s Address.”
Not “attempting to disrupt.” Rather, “ready and able to disrupt” (the moment Obama says something not to the Joooos’ liking).
The message is that the entire speech was pre-approved and stamped with approval by the Global Zionist Shylocktopus, since otherwise they would’ve yanked Obama’s microphone.
And if the evil Zionists pre-approved the speech, it must be that the speech demanded no concessions from the Jews, but only from the poor suffering Arabs.

The only surprising cartoon (at least mildly surprising) is the one that portrays both Israeli and Iranian hawks salivating over Obama’s speech.
Obviously, it’s not news that the mostly Sunni Arabs hate the mostly Shiite Persians. But I was slightly surprised by the apparent implication that Israel and Iran present essentially equal threats to the Arabs (the two hawks are of equal size, and swooping in side-by-side).

Just as an aside, the MEMRI site is terrific for people studying Arabic. They show translated clips of hard-line excess and encouraging liberal thinkers in the ME. And when you get a screaming match between a loony and a liberal moderated by (creepy little conspiracist) Dr.Fauzi, it makes for much more enjoyable study time than reading about fluctuations in oil prices or the usual boring text book dialogues.

I put a screen door on my house on Friday and now I’m compared to North Korea
In short that is the entire absurdity about this immoral comparison. And what of my government should Israelis wanting to put on screen doors be stopped or is it even possible? My neighbor building his house? Does the UN want to embargo the bricks and cement? I might add that that there are no restrictions on the Arabs across the way from building and nor would the US support such restrictions.
When Sharon proposed disengagement many people saw, as I did, that he was opening the door to this. If Sharon was half the leader his supporters made him out to be he would have never have agreed to the “Road Map” when it was forced down our throats and he certainly wouldn’t have let Israel’s reservations about building in existing communities to stay out of the official document. Dov Weisglass can write all the articles he wants now, but the US administration is still going to yell out ‘gotcha’. Also wrapping this argument around the term ‘natural growth’ is in itself misleading. Simply put communities are not static they have a constant need for renovations, and growth to accommodate changing needs.
After the 6 day war Israel initially took the line that Judea and Samaria was not occupied territory but land originally part of the Palestine Mandate that became Israel in 1948 and therefore legitimately part of Israel. This position has been consistently whittled away at with the nadir with Sharon and Olmert who essentially plead the Palestinian cause. It is going to take an Israeli leader with integrity and courage (and that doesn’t sound like Netanyahu) to correct the situation.
