BNP Goes to EU Parliament

The Holocaust-denying, openly racist, neo-Nazi British National Party now has a seat in European Parliament.

White supremacists worldwide are partying tonight.

The British National Party broke into the political mainstream last night when it won its first seat in the European Parliament.

The far-right party won almost 10 per cent of the vote in Yorkshire and the Humber, most of from Labour, by capitalising on public dissatisfaction over the expenses furore.

The BNP may also win a second seat in the North West where the party’s leader, Nick Griffin, is the lead candidate. At midnight the count had not been completed, although the party was not polling as strongly as it had expected.

The BNP will undoubtedly use its win to claim that it has political legitimacy but the mainstream parties will be dismayed by its progress.

UPDATE at 6/7/09 6:52:22 pm:

Make that two seats in European Parliament.

The far- Right British National Party won their first ever seats in a national election last night as Labour crashed to poll humiliation.

The triumph for the neo-fascist party, which will now send two MEPs to Brussels, sent shockwaves through Westminster and increased pressure on Gordon Brown.

Labour MPs were horrified that their party’s vote had collapsed so dramatically that it opened the door for the far Right.

Disturbing news from our English friends. There seems to be fertile recruiting grounds on the edges of society over there. What does Gordon or Cameron have to say about all of this?

The European version of the UN? But, they do have an impact on all members of the EU. Bureaucrats from Brussels...I never thought I would live to see these Europeans give up their sovereignty...I know the Brits are still holding on, but they are on that slippery slope already.

THE SWEDISH Pirate Party has been favoured to win at least one seat in the European parliament this week.

The party, which wants to bolster Internet privacy, was founded in January 2006 and has been getting a lot of support from those who think that the music and film industries have gone too far in trying to control people's lives.

According to AFP, membership shot up after a Stockholm court on April 17 sentenced four Swedes to a year in jail for running one of the world's biggest filesharing sites, The Pirate Bay.

Opinion polls show the party with between 5.5 and 7.9 percent of votes, well above the four percent required to win a seat.

Labour is going down in flames, an epic fail:
Support For UK's Ruling Labour Slides Below 20 Percent

Support for Britain's ruling Labour Party plunged to its lowest level in a century in European elections on Sunday, prompting fresh calls for Prime Minister Gordon Brown to step down.

Adding to Labour's woes, the far-right British National Party won its first seat in the European Parliament.

The BNP gained the seat in the northern English region of Yorkshire and Humber at the expense of Brown's Labour Party, which has been hurt by a scandal over politicians' expenses and questions over Brown's leadership at a time of deep recession.

Labour also lost a seat in Wales, a traditional stronghold, where it came second behind the center-right Conservatives.

A projection for the BBC put Labour on 16 percent of the vote, just behind the anti-EU UK Independence Party and 11 points adrift of the Conservatives.

Labour's share of the vote was down about seven points from the last European election in 2004, while the Conservatives were little changed.

The performance gave fresh ammunition to Brown's critics in the Labour Party after a traumatic week in which six senior ministers quit the government, one of whom called on Brown to quit and said he was an electoral liability.

By and large the winners in the UK have been the tories but the big news lately has been brash abuses of parliamentary expense allowances across the board, even if the Labour party do look the most guilty, and that disillusionment on top of existing woes and gripes has been useful to smaller parties. UKIP, which could have been a marginal player, has won a greater share of the vote than Labour. This is across EU-mandated voting boundaries but bodes well for the Tories in any forthcoming general election, and by then hopefully not as well for the BNP.

I hope it's not stretching an analogy too far, but Labour's dramatic collapse, and BNP's resultant victory in this one seat, happened for the same reason Hamas was able to defeat Fatah in the Gaza elections: endemic corruption in the incumbent party.

Rats, it's 2 seats now. This is not exactly the Fourth Reich but the signs are not good at all.

Exactly! My office is at one end of the house, and the master bedroom is at the other end, with the stairs in between. Time to break out Drake's Drum?

Drake is said to have taken the drum, emblazoned with his coat of arms, with him on his voyages around the world between 1577 and 1580. It was still with him for his final voyage and as he lay on his death bed off the coast of Panama in 1596 he ordered the drum returned to England where in times of trouble it should be beaten to recall him from heaven to rescue the country.

The origins of the BNP can be traced back to the British Union of Fascists, which was founded by a British MP Sir Oswald Mosley Bt (he was a Baronet; this is relevant for the video below). His second wife was Diana Mitford, sister of Unity Mitford (another admirer of Hitler). From 1951, he lived outside Britain in Ireland then in France, and he died in 1980. A satirical British TV show at the time, Not the 9 O'clock News, featured a rather amusing song about him, following his death. In case it's not clear, the singers are meant to be skinheads, typical members of that political party then and now. Unfortunately, the person who recorded the video has managed to chop off the first line which is quite important to know. It's "He was popular and handsome as Richard Burton." Now, watch the video.

Oh, this is just rich - tax international travel on flights to fight climate change. Yeah, that's going to work - hit the tourism industry, which is about one of the only things that the NY metro area economy has going for it.

People come from all over the world to JFK - with pretty much their clothes on their back.

They go to Woodbury Commons or Tanger Outlets - and stock up on luxury goods and the suitcases to take back with them.

It's a profitable arrangement and there are tours that have this in mind.

In fact, Europeans from London and France will do this as a weekend trip.

Tax it and those tourism dollars are going to dry up - and who is going to compensate those businesses for the lost income? No one - they're going to go out of business.

All this administration can think of is tax and spend - and climate change is the last of our concerns given that the planet's climate continually changes and no one is sure of all the mechanisms that make it happen.

Any party that doesn’t tow the socialist line will be vilified, so don’t look to the characterizations in the monothlic British press to determine what’s in the hearts of the people who belong to the BNP. In any event, England has crossed the Rubicon on racial politics, so who is to say that it’s racist to have a party that addresses the particular needs of the Anglo-Saxon community? It’s certainly no more racist than any of the other race-based parties and organizations as the BNP points out. It’s simply that the Left in Britain, as here in America, wish to create this false definition of racism which holds that everyone but whites and Christians can say whatever they like, no matter how racist, organize based solely upon race or ethnicity, and advocate for policies that benefit their race or ethnic group to the expense of others, but claim not to be racist. ‘Racism’ is an increasingly meaningless charge from people who have long used it get what they want, and if we’re all to be reduced to tribes under the auspices of ‘racial diversity’ then don’t be surprised when the white tribe organized for it’s own benefit like everyone else.

Slightly OT but related: Is the US Really a Nation of God-Fearing Darwin-Haters? Reality Says No

Thanks for the link. Very interesting article. But I find the author's reasoning on that subject unconvincing:

The modern American creationist, interestingly enough, no longer takes scripture as sufficient reason to believe the Biblical account of the origins of the world. The debate is, instead, conducted on the turf of science, with creationists attempting to argue the fine points of the age of the fossil record, suggesting that orthodox evolution has gaps as a seamless explanation, and otherwise indicating their acceptance that the modern world speaks the language of science.

But (I would argue) belief in literal, infallible scripture is the reason, and the only reason, that they're arguing in the first place. They pick tiny bits of science that expose "gaps" in the edifice of evolution, and ignore the 99 percent of science that tells them they're barking up the wrong tree. That's not "accepting" science; that's just throwing everything against the wall and hoping some of it sticks. Grrr.

Competing interpretations of the above article welcome.

Meet BNP's Andrew Brons:

Brons, 61, started his nazi career in the National Socialist Movement, an organisation that was deliberately founded on Hitler’s birthday by Colin Jordan, the British nazi leader who died in April aged 85. NSM members were responsible for an arson campaign against Jewish property and synagogues in the 1960s.

Brons appears to have approved. In a letter to Jordan’s wife, Brons reported meeting an NSM member who “mentioned such activities as bombing synagogues”. He declared: “On This subject I have a dual view, in that I realise that he is well intentioned, I feel that our public image may suffer considerable damage as a result of these activities. I am however open to correction on this point.”

He also sent Mrs Jordan money to buy a swastika badge and other Nazi material, explaining he was about the undertake a “crash programme” of publicity for the NSM in Yorkshire by deluging areas with Nazi stickers, posters and slogans.[Link: www.hopenothate.org.uk...]

From the BNP "Countering the Smears" page, [not to be confused with Obama's "Fight the Smears" page.]

Your leader is on record denying the Holocaust ever happened and claiming that Jews control the media – you are clearly an anti-Semitic party.

Not at all. Dredging up quotes from 10, 15, 20 years ago is really pathetic and, in a sense, rather fascist. Everyone knows that people’s political philosophies evolve and change as they develop – at least three Labour ministers were previously Communist Party members, for instance - and Nick Griffin has repeatedly stated that he has changed his views since then. The BNP is in no way anti-Semitic nor do we deny the Holocaust. We have many Jewish members and are pleased to have a Jewish councillor in Epping, who is, indeed, the group leader there.

What a load of crap.

So what's the big deal with the BNP in the Euro Parliament?
Former Grand Kleagle Robert Byrd is still in the US Senate.
///

Wel-l-l-l-l-l, to me it makes a big difference that Byrd renounced the KKK decades ago and has been apologizing for it ever since. Supreme Court Justice Hugo Black is another example of a former KKK member who supposedly turned his life around. Spiritual "conversion" on the highway of life goes all the way back to Saul of Tarsus, and he made pretty good of himself. I can't buy the argument that a one-time affiliation with racism, no matter how troubling, forever negates what a person does with his/her life. People change, and I'm not sufficiently superior to judge 'em. My two cents.

The only thing I can say to that is to quote Flick from A Christmas Story:

"You're full of beans and so is your old man!"

I'll ask you what I asked yma this morning. Is Britain in as bad a shape now as it was before Thatcher took over?

Britain is not in great economic shape, but the situation is somewhat different from 1979. What precipitated the no-confidence motion which brought down the Labour government under Jim Callahan was a series of strikes that took place during the winter of 1978-79, the so-called "winter of discontent".

The ABC commentators on the Lakers game are just dreadful, I'm listening to KLAC, but they are ten seconds ahead of the action!

In this day of the HD digital programming with the time delay there is a need for a radio with an adjustable delay in the signal so you can watch the game an TV and synch up the radio and listen to the local play-by-play team. That used to be a no-brainer, the TV and radio were together. Not so much anymore.

re: #144 jim in virginia

I was so hoping someone would ask.
My yard is roughly divided in half by a patio, pool and shed. The squirrels live on the south side of the yard (they have the creepy ability to crawl upside down on my brick walls, so I call them "spider-squirrels") and the cats generally lounge on the north side. When a couple squirrels jump down to the grass, on their side, the cats perk up. As the squirrels start moving towards the mid-point of the yard (pool, patio, etc.) the cats move towards their side of the "border". If the squirrels keep coming (they can be oblivious), one of the cats invariably runs right up the pool-adder which scares the squirrels, and then the other (bigger) cat strides right trough the squirrel territory until the squirrels end up back in their tree or under the fence. The cats don't even take much pleasure in it anymore.

Not a Obama thing, this time.

I called him last week, the first time I had heard from him since before the funeral.

He's alright, but taking it really slow. He will get thank you's out as he can, but at his own pace.

So, he's ok, will be back to LGF when he feels up to it.

Disturbing news from our English friends. There seems to be fertile recruiting grounds on the edges of society over there. What does Gordon or Cameron have to say about all of this?

This is what happens when you have an extreme pendulum swing. The British left has gone apeshit crazy and this is a result. The pendulum doesn't swing back to the center when either party moves too far to the extremes. Hopefully the democrats in congress will take note of this.

–Andrew Brons of the racist and fascist BNP has been elected to a seat in the European Parliament.

More to come.

On the one hand, well done to the Tories and UKIP.

On the other, the scum that is the BNP got two seats.
One of them is a holocaust denier, the other a former leader of the National Front. Some days I am not very proud to be from Yorkshire.

It will take a few days for the exact consequences of the election to be unraveled, but I would wager that Gordon Brown is not one happy bunny - Labour got their lowest results in any election for about 90 years.
He could be gone this time tomorrow if he is pushed.

Overall, it was a mixed bag today. I am happy, and pissed off, an emotional state which does not happen very often.

They got 27 per cent of the vote. UKIP, which mainly consists of tories who want Britain out of the European Union, was the second largest, with almost 19 per cent of the vote.

I would but, I don't see this as a catastrophe. I believe the Tories will make strong gains in the general election.

I do hope that they will hammer home the records of local BNP representatives. Those opportunistic idiots have records which boggle the mind.

Also, the BNPers in the lower levels of government have mostly proven worthless, IIRC. But now they have a few county council seats.

(The Euro Parliament is bullshit, and I don't expect BNP grandstanding there to have any effect.)

BNPers in county councils, that's more serious. The whole of Lancashire, is, as of now, a national circus while the sane councilmembers figure out how to get stuff done. And good luck getting services in Burnley West.

287 Gus  Sun, Jun 7, 2009 9:32:24pm

The BNP goes to EU parliament.

Just a reminder of whom is going.

Nick Griffin on the Holocaust:

"I am well aware that the orthodox opinion is that 6 million Jews were gassed and cremated and turned into lampshades. Orthodox opinion also once held that the world is flat... I have reached the conclusion that the 'extermination' tale is a mixture of Allied wartime propaganda, extremely profitable lie, and latter witch-hysteria."

Nick Griffin:

Nick Griffin is a Cambridge graduate, and the current leader of the BNP. He has been involved in far right politics for the past twenty-seven years.
For most of that time he was in the National Front. He was a firm believer in racial separation and in the Jewish global conspiracy. Griffin, like others in the National Front, claimed the Holocaust did not happen.

He joined the British National Party in 1995. Three years later he was given a two-year suspended sentence for distributing material likely to incite racial hatred. He became BNP leader in October 1999 and since then he claims to have transformed the Party and its image.

Far-right group's first seat in European Parliament

By Oliver Wright
Monday, 8 June 2009

A former leader of the National Front with a 40-year history in far-right politics was last night elected the British National Party's first ever MEP.

Andrew Brons, a 61-year-old former politics lecturer, become one of six MEPs elected from the Yorkshire and Humber region with 10 per cent of the vote...

Andrew Brons:

He began his political career as an alleged member of the National Socialist Movement until he was seventeen, then joined John Bean's British National Party (not to be confused with the party of the same name formed in 1982) which merged with the League of Empire Loyalists to form the National Front (NF) in 1967. He contested Harrogate for the NF in both 1974 general elections, polling 1186 votes (2.3%) in February and 1030 (2.3%) in October. As NF candidate in the Birmingham Stechford by-election of 31 March 1977 he forced the Liberal candidate into fourth place, helping his stature to grow within the NF.

The far right has its opening when all the other parties are far left. Is there any other way in Britain to vote against the de-facto legalization of polygamy, and a polygamy in which the husband can put all his wives on welfare and have the taxpayers pony up for raising them?

Is there any other way in Britain to vote against an expansion of no-go zones across Britain, said expansion fueled by immigration from places that traditionally turn into no-go zones the districts they gain a majority in?

Yes, to an extent. The conservative party. And it gained far more seats than did the BNP. Europe isn't going fascist. It's just pissed at what the coalition of the unwilling-to-do-anything has made of Europe.

291 Normal Wisdom  Mon, Jun 8, 2009 10:41:51am

Why is everyone referring to the BNP as right wing, they are far Left-wing. All their policies are typical of socialists; economic protectionism, nationalisation and higher taxes. And where did they get the majority of their support from, not the traditional right wing Conservative Party, but the Socialist Labour party which has always been strong in the former industrial heartland land of Northern England. Oh yeah, with limitations of immigration thrown in. Similarly the Nazi Party (Nationalist Socialist Party) were also left wing. So peeps lets get our definitions right.

292 wicksy  Mon, Jun 8, 2009 12:13:08pm

A sad day for British politics for sure.

Please note however, they have won these seats by default, not through some surge in their support base:

[Link: news.bbc.co.uk...]
The BNP won more than 120,139 votes in the Yorkshire region, slightly less than in 2004
...
Mr Griffin was elected to Brussels even though the BNP polled fewer votes in the region than it had in 2004 - the slump in Labour support meant its share of the vote increased.

It meant that although the BNP came fifth in the popular vote in the region, it won a seat through the system of proportional representation used in the European elections.

The parliamentary expenses scandal, coupled with Gordon Brown's dismally ineffective leadership and left-wing policies, are what has brought this situation to a head.

Not that i'm making excuses, but this is what happens when politics in general goes bad.

293 Øyvind Strømmen  Mon, Jun 8, 2009 4:01:35pm

With proportional representation, even wackos get represented, and as long as they are a small minority, it's just one of those challenges a democracy will have to face.

With a system were winning a plurality would be enough, chances are Vlaams Belang would already be governing an independent Flanders, as they were the biggest party in a number of Flemish cities and towns in the last regional elections. That would be a country I would not want to visit. We would probably ask for Walloon passports for our half-Belgian, half-Norwegian kids. I'm not kidding.

Now for the good news: Vlaams Belang lost one of their seats in the Europarliament, and has taken a solid beating in the Flemish regional elections. They're still scaringly big for a fascist party (which means they still frighten me much more than the garden variety Islamist fanatic of Europe), but considerable chuncks of their electorate has moved to Lijst Dedecker, a nativist party with a somewhat libertarian streak, and NVE, a moderate Flemish-nationalist party. Praise be to proportional representation.

re: #289 Abdul Abulbul Amir

When the major parties fail to address problems, the whacko parties pick up support.

Yeah, except in this case, many of the alleged failures of the major parties is pure propaganda peddled by the very same wacko parties. And where the failures are actual failures, their solutions is consistently to deepen the failure, i.e. integration policies have considerable flaws in a number of European countries. But with these guys integration or for that matter assimilation is not even a goal. They want segregation. That's what they're all about. In VB's case it's only recently they've even started talking about integration. They used to state openly that they were against any such thing, because it would damage, and this has to be quoted in a Germanic language, the "volksgemeenschap".

294 pingemi  Tue, Jun 9, 2009 5:01:15am

I think Mark Steyn nailed it:

Yet, while the Labour Party is shriveling before our eyes, David Cameron's Tories are not obviously the beneficiaries. In the English council elections the Conservatives got a lower percentage of the vote than last time round, and, insofar as there was a (one per cent) swing to the Tories in the European elections, in the end their vote was only a a handful of points higher than the combined tally of the two beyond-the-pale parties, the openly xenophobic* (well, anti-European) UK Independence Party and the openly racist British National Party. If Gordon Brown's rotting zombie of a ministry can't drive voters into the embrace of David Cameron, what can?

Is it because the British are a bunch or racists? More likely because the other choice was considered no choice by the public.

It is up to the Tories to address the actual needs and problems of England. If they bothered to do so then England wouldn't have to make the Choice between David Duke and Edward Edwards.

It's a no win situation and it unfortunately legitimized a bunch of really nasty people. Lets hope it doesn't turn out like the middle east when a corrupt and idiotic Fatah was replaced by Hamas.

re: #33 lawhawk

Europe is once again slouching towards the precipice. I don't know if they've got the good sense to realize what they've done - and what the BNP is doing.

The vote for BNP candidates is an effort by many in the UK to try to get their mainstream politicians to listen to them.
Remember Ross Perot? It worked here for a short while.
