Sotomayor in a Cast

Supreme Court nominee Sonia Sotomayor tripped while walking through LaGuardia Airport this morning, and fractured her ankle.

Supreme Court nominee Sonia Sotomayor was taken to George Washington University Medical Center in the District this morning for X-rays of her right ankle after stumbling at the La Guardia airport in New York, White House officials said.

The X-ray revealed a small fracture in her ankle. She was released from the hospital after less than two hours and is now using crutches, said Ben LaBolt, an assistant press secretary at the White House.

“This morning, on the way to Washington, D.C., Judge Sotomayor tripped at LaGuardia Airport. After an X-ray at Medical Faculty Associates, it was determined that Judge Sotomayor has a small fracture in her right ankle,” LaBolt said. “She has been treated and released, and is looking forward to keeping her full schedule of meetings on Capitol Hill this afternoon.”

LaBolt said Sotomayor was rushing through the hallways at LaGuardia to catch her flight when she injured her foot. He said she boarded her plane despite the injury and traveled to the Old Executive Office Building next to the White House before determining that she needed treatment.

Assuming there’s nothing terribly complicated about the fracture, she should be back on her feet before the October session. Best wishes for her recovery.

Indeed. I was able to run errands and walk around after shaking off my own fractured ankle in March, which I first thought was a sprain - and until the docs took x-rays, didn’t ponder a fracture. It was only after I sat down and started to relax, did I realize that it wasn’t able to bear a whole lot of weight, to say nothing of going up or down stairs.

From personal experience - you can roll it (avulsion fracture of the distal tibia - my own situation), or your can have a stress fracture.

There are three main bones in the ankle, any of which can fracture. Falls can do a whole lot of damage, and in some cases spraining the ankle is worse than a fracture because the sprain means torn ligaments that could require surgery, while a fracture can heal on its own.

I had a plaster splint cast after going to the hospital, and when I went to the orthopedist later in the day, they put me in a biomet walking boot, which lets you take showers and go to bed without the thing getting in the way. My own directions required me to have an ace bandage underneath for additional stability.

I figure that they’ll probably put her in a walking boot after visiting her own orthopedist (and I have the name of the best ankle specialist in NJ if need be).

There’s terrible healthcare and awful doctors everywhere. My mom’s primary care doctor kept telling my mom that a bone spur was just tendonitis or something (“take some motrin.”) for 18 whole months.

I said it was a bone spur, and an orthopedist should look at it. That was when she (finally!) asked for a second opinion. Two weeks later, it was treated and she was fine.

Plenty

So in order for me to get a qualifying health plan, I will have to find a plan that offers unlimited coverage? That’s gonna cost a ton. Seriously there are insurance companies that offer plans that have no lifetime limits? How can they even price something like that?

116 subsailor68  Mon, Jun 8, 2009 12:10:28pm

OT, but George Will seems to nail it:

Have We Got a Deal For You

From the column:

“What we are not doing — what I have no interest in doing — is running GM,” says the president who, when not firing GM’s CEO, purging its board of directors and picking new members, is designing new products (imposing fuel economy requirements that will control size, weight, passenger capacity and safety).

And then Ron Gettlefinger of UAW weighs in:

GM is adopting new ways to lose money: Responsive to its UAW masters, GM is moving from China to America the production of some components of one Chevrolet model. Says UAW President Ron Gettelfinger, “It should be built here if it’s going to be sold here.” That principle, now successfully asserted, means economic autarky — the end of international trade, and of prosperity.

GM, in short, is toast.

Example, had a friend in New Mexico, he wanted to help out so he volunteered to help at the New Mexico State Prison near Santa Fe,
he worked free there for two years, then one of the patients claimed
he did a mis-diagnose once he was outside, hired a slip and fall atty,
hell the New Mexico Government atty. Gen.’s office worked with the prisoner against him in the case, cost him about $150,000.00 to defend himself
from a bogus law suit,,,, sold both his homes, closed his practice and now practices in Dallas….

New Mexico is Democrat nuts.

and that right there is what is REALLY wrong with healthcare in America.

So seriously here, the percentage of women who die in airplane crashes is higher than men (even though there are less women on each plane) and it is due to the simple fact of pantyhose. In a fire, they are deadly because they melt into your skin. When flying one should try to wear as much cotton as possible.

This in not April fools joke:

A robot snake with a camera and microphone in its head is the IDF’s latest battlefield weapon, according to a Channel 2 report broadcast Monday.

The channel showed video of the snake twisting into caves, tunnels, cracks and buildings, broadcasting pictures and sound back to a soldier controlling it with a laptop computer.

The “snake” appeared to be about six feet (two meters) long. Covered by fabric in military camouflage colors, it slithered along the ground and climbed rocks, its segments connected with joints that flexed in several different directions. Channel 2 said military researchers studied real snakes to copy their movements.

The report said no price had been determined for the snake, which was in the experimental stage, but the IDF plans to deploy the robot with combat units. No target date was given.

The report suggested another role for the robot - carrying a bomb to blow up terrorists or a building. In that case, Channel 2 said, it would be a “suicide snake.”

I believe it was a Los Angles rams Linebacker, Hacksaw Reynolds, who played the second half of the super bowl vs the Steelers with a broken arm he had broken in the first half..now thats tough.

It was a broken bone in his leg and he played the whole game.

I once pitched 6 2/3’s innings with a broken finger on my pitching hand. I knew it was broken but did not feel it hurt bad till after the game was over.

Pain tolerances are odd things. I was able to do that but I cannot stand the touch of a needle.

I have a rental property here in Georgia. I rented it to a Honduran couple with 2 kids, They also asked if they could have a 2 cousins (males about 25) live with them. In that it is a 4 bedroom we agreed that for an extra $100 a month it would be okay

In the 4 1/2 years that they lioved there they actullay IMPROVED the property (painted, carpentry work, finished a room in the basement that I had onl;y studded out) ALL WITH THEIR OWN $$$

They were never ONCE late on their rent

I sure do miss them!

It’s not too early for the I told you so when you see that Obama’s brilliant economics experts were saying that unemployment rates would peak at 9%, and they’re already blown past that at 9.6% and now economists are predicting double digits are on the way. He claims that he saved or created 150k jobs, which is a bogus and bs metric that could rightfully claim that since I still have my job, it was saved due to his porkfest.

Unemployment figures still show troubling signs. Economic activity is mixed.

It is indisputable that the deficit is a massive and gaping black hole of fiscal irresponsibility, and has done nothing to ease unemployment, because his claims that $112 billion spent so far to prime the economy has resulted in a net loss of jobs. That’s just the tip of this $1.2 trillion porkfest.

Both racist, and TRULY ignorant, in the fullest sense of the word.

(It’s funny, though; I find that Latinos themselves tend to underestimate their own work ethic.)

Michelle Serros did a hilarious essay, where she’s trying to get her extended Mexican-American family to leave her alone so she can write. The only thing that works, she figures out, is to claim she’s sick. The whole family agrees that if you’re sick you have to take care of yourself, or you might have a relapse, and miss work, or even die, and then think how much work you would miss.

224 subsailor68  Mon, Jun 8, 2009 12:37:07pm

From the “I Don’t Think So” File:

Obama promises summer speedup of economic effort

From the article:

Eager to show action on the ailing economy, President Barack Obama promised Monday to speed federal money into hundreds of public works projects this summer, vowing that 600,000 jobs will be created or saved.

And:

The jobs cover an array of public works ranging from parks and wastewater projects to improvements at military facilities, airports and veteran medical centers.

Ah, Mr. President, please read up on Roosevelt’s WPA and CCC programs. These jobs did put people to work - for a time - but when the particular project was over, the people were once again unemployed.

Get out of the jobs business, and let capital flow to the private sector. If you don’t, things will get much, much worse.

I’ve known a guy who went weeks with a completely messed up knee (torn everything and broken bone in the lower leg). The Sunday before he finally went to the doctor, he was in the dojo working out on a wave bag trying to kick through the pain.

Wasn’t me. Some people are too tough for their own good.

I tore my Achilles tendon playing racquetball - completely. It rolled halfway up my calf. Walked around for 3 months on it before I went to a doctor to fix it. Not being heroic, just had a Cobra screw-up after I’d been laid off and it took 3 months to straighten it out.

Doug Buffone, old outside linbacker for the Bears in the 60’s and 70’s, played part of a football game with a torn achilles. He said that his foot kept flopping around but he kept playing on it till the ball turned over, came to the sidelines to get checked out, and was told he was done for the season.

The tendon had rolled up like a window shade.

Well, dang, it wasn’t during a game (from his Wiki bio):

Lott switched to the safety position in 1985. He had the tip of his left pinky finger amputated after the 1985 season, when it was crushed by tackling RB Timmy Newsome.

Not “where”, but “how”. Be driven up in a black limousine and escorted by an armed praetorian guard:

Sotomayor was spotted at the Ambulatory Care Center at 22nd and I Streets in Washington arriving in a wheel chair and surrounded by an entourage of security officials and aides.

One person who saw her arrival at the hospital said she arrived in one of two black sedans typical of those used by Washington politicians.

She could have done herself huge political good by insisting, or pretending to insist, on being treated like everybody else. For whatever reason, she didn’t; she behaved like a high-ranking member of the Establishment. Since her confirmation is all but assured unless something unexpected happens, it makes no practical difference.

Thank God she was a wise latina, had she been a white male the whole leg would probably have to be amputated because his decisions and actions would have been far inferior to Queen Sotomayor.
But at least now Queen So/So will have more empathy with people who suffer from broken bones.
Sarcasm aside, I do wish her a speedy recovery from her injury. Thank God she has the best health care available for federal judges, if she had Obamacare, she’d be a goner.
