N. Korea Gives US Journalists 12 Years Hard Labor

World • Views: 2,074

Two US journalists for Al Gore’s Current TV have been sentenced to 12 years’ hard labour in North Korea.

I notice we aren’t hearing a lot of talk about “unclenching fists” these days.

The US hinted at the weekend that, in response to the nuclear stand-off, it could rebrand North Korea a terrorist state and also begin stopping and searching North Korean ships. One small hopeful sign from today’s sentencing was that the fate of the two journalists was not publicly linked to the nuclear row. Washington too will strive to keep the issues separate.

The two journalists, Laura Ling and Euna Lee, who worked for Al Gore’s Current TV, were arrested in March while filming a report about North Koreans fleeing across the Tumen river into China. North Korea claims the two illegally entered the country but other reports said the two had been filming from Chinese soil.

Their trial, held in secret, began on Thursday and they were sentenced to 12 years of “reform through labour” for an unspecified “grave crime” and for allegedly entering the country illegally, according to North Korean television.

More handouts.

We've trained NK to behave like this over the last 50 years or so. They keep crossing our lines in the sand, and we keep doing nothing in response.

Expect more of the same if we run squealing back to the negotiating table again.

The middle finger of his left hand.

I'm waiting to hear what Mr. Ronery is going to demand under the table for not sending them to his Friendly Neighborhood Gulag.

/a 10-12 year sentence in a PDRNK "strict regimen" labor camp/prison generally ends a good bit earlier- most prisoners last only about four or five years.

Would the North Koreans have seized the journalists without Chinese permission?

Sure. Kimmy is a real pain in the ass as far as China is concerned. He has always behaved independently of China, and the day may be approaching when China no longer views such unpredictable behavior with much tolerance. They really don't want the US, and even less so the US and a bunch of it's allies, floating off the NK coast threatening the region with a hot war.

Although no journalist is worth risking war over, and CurrentTV "journalists" even less so, I think this calls for a carrier battle group in the Sea of Japan or the Yellow Sea. Its the least the One can do for his water-carriers.

Although being a former 7th Fleet sailor, I would be pretty pissed if I had to mess up my liberty plans over two of Al Gores minions.

34 SixDegrees  Mon, Jun 8, 2009 3:40:39pm

The US needs to rethink it's NK strategy. It ought to be obvious to everyone by now that negotiations don't work; Kimmy simply uses them to get what he wants, then reneges on his end of the deal, ad infinitum. Sanctions also don't work; NK is pretty much self-sufficient when it comes to mass starvation and poverty, and getting the Russians to agree not to export $5000 watches to the country just isn't going to have any impact.

Interdicting their ships, however, would make everyone sit up and pay attention. NK makes nearly all it's cash from arms exports, the only way it can ship those arms is by sea, and a couple of high-profile seizures - after a high-profile announcement of intention - just might get the message across that we're sick of this shit and aren't going to play nice anymore.

The risk of a war is near zero. If Kimmy wanted a war, he could start one in five minutes by lobbing artillery into Seoul. He wants a free hand to do whatever he wants, and he wants the rest of the world to keep funneling aid to him in return.

Failing action by China - which is still the best hope of getting anything done, to be frank - it might be time for the US and it's allies in the region to bitch-slap the little asshole.

42 Rexatosis  Mon, Jun 8, 2009 3:42:48pm

Both of these journalists work for Al Gore's News network. They are employees of the former Vice-President of the United States, they seizure, show trial, and sentence is a direct message to the current Presidental Administration from the same party as VP Gore. As high profile prisoners both journalists are high value propoganda pieces for the NK regime internally showing it to have stood up to the United States. As such they may be more valuable to the NK regime held than released (possibly a reversal of the earlier situation in Iran a couple of months ago). This does not bode well for these two ladies.

News update from CBS;

Two "special envoys" are being considered by POTUS to go to Pyonmgyang and "negotiate" the two reporters' release. They are (drum roll, please)...

Former NM Governor and Energy Secretary Bill Richardson and/or

Former VOTUS AlGore From The Planet Eco.

My guess is, the deal to get the two reporters out will involve "carbon credits", meaning "cash under the table".

/sort of appropriate, as the word "cash" is Chinese in origin, referring to a bronze coin of the Han Dynasty- hence "cold, hard cash"

My understanding was that they were reporting on the substantial illegal traffic involving North Koreans sneaking into China to find work, and smuggling food and goods back into North Korea. China arrests those caught and deports them back to NK; in NK, getting caught on either side of the border with this sort of thing in mind is an automatic death sentence.

My guess is that the reporters were bouncing back and forth across the border with some of the illegal NK citizens, and had the misfortune to get caught. Their "trial," however, is strictly for show, with the ultimate goal of extortion in exchange for their release. Any NK citizens caught with them are probably already dead, no trial required.

If we initiated war with NK, we would be pretty much on our own.
The Korean War was savage & we didn't lose , but the NK regime survived, so they won too.
They have denounced the Armistice, so technically a state of war exists now. If it came to it in my opinion, the smart thing would be to take out the capital by air and all of the infrastructure.

Yes, he should. I'm betting he won't, or will say something that will just encourage Lil' Kim. He will let his dogma and memes guide him, and when it blows up in his face, blame somebody else.

the problem with The One is that he came up under the Chicago machine. There, if you have a (D) next to your name, no matter how royally you screw up, The Machine will protect you to protect itself. He believes that he can count on The Machine to do the same at this level- not understanding that when you are POTUS, there is no machine that can take the fall for you, or cover your a$$.

Sooner or later, The One is going to get a very rude awakening to this concept. And it will be one he cannot avoid by throwing someone else under the bus.

This could bring it about, sooner rather than later.

The survey [of Iranians], taken last month, shows that 29 percent of Iranians view the U.S. positively. In February 2008, a similar poll of Iranians showed 34 percent with favorable views of the U.S.

re: #62 SixDegrees

After seeing the many photos of near empty North Korean cities with its few residents acting within strict behavior, I can only imagine the horror that is kept hidden from the rest of the world. Everything is for show in North Korea. The recent missile tests, the atomic bomb test and now these two journalists being given a death within 12 years sentenced at one North Korea's "Reform Labor Camps" is all a part of the show.

Fiat Will ‘Never’ Walk Away From Chrysler, CEO Says

Fiat SpA will “never” walk away from its deal with Chrysler LLC, Fiat Chief Executive Officer Sergio Marchionne said in an interview.

“We should just be patient and let the system work,” Marchionne said by telephone today moments after Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg ordered a delay of Chrysler’s planned sale to the Italian carmaker while the U.S. Supreme Court considers a request for a longer postponement that might scuttle the deal.

And why not, they're getting Chrysler for FREE. Hey avanti, you paying attention? So pay no attention to the fear mongers who are claiming that this deal has to be done by the 15th or Chrysler will be liquidated and the U.S. economy will collapse.

/the Supreme Court should take this case and take a good long look at the deal and sort through it to get it legally right, there's a lot of legal precedents and rights being trampled by the stampeding Obamatron car task force

One would think that an incident like this would focused the world’s attention on the abject brutality of North Korean labor camps and make us realize this how frivolous the GITMO ‘torture’ debate is, but of course we all know the reality.

Army Mechanic's Garage Tinkering Yields 18-Foot Mecha Exoskeleton

Owens, 31, began building an 18-foot-tall, one-ton prototype at his home in Wasilla, Alaska, in 2004. Working without blueprints, he first built a full-scale model out of wood. Moving on to steel, he had to devise a hydraulics system that would provide precisely the right leverage and range of movement. He settled on a complex network of cables and hydraulic cylinders that can make the mecha raise its arms, bend its knees, and even do a sit-up.

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

MR. KELLY: Well, all I’ve seen is that they’ve committed an unspecified grave crime against North Korea and that they didn’t follow border procedures.

QUESTION: But you don’t have a position on whether they are innocent or guilty of the charge that – however harsh it may be, do you have any indication that they were not guilty of doing what they were accused of?

This is just more of North Korea posturing as Kim Jong Il gets gets closer to handing over the reigns to his 26 year old son.

These women will not do twelve years, probably closer to 12 months or even 12 days depending upon what bone we toss NK through the backdoor via China.

I doubt they're being treated harshly either at this point. This is all part of the show unfolding there now.

At least I hope I'm right here. It doesn't do any good for NK to hang on to these women long term.

You wouldn't believe how many fanboys think mecha is the end all, beat all weapon/construction system. Of course the images inside their heads are something straight out of a Japanese anime. All fantastic imagery with no basis in reality. Don't get me wrong, I think any military/construction/nurse mechsuit are not only possible but only a few years to a decades away of being quite common. They will be more a kin to that found in Starship Troopers, the book not those stupid movies, than those fantastic 100 ft mechs of the fantasy. Hey Help Y'all - i'm using Windows Vista and am using Web Mail for my e-mails. Just went to Web Mail and my ENTIRE E-mail ADDRESS BOOK is GONE! Says I have no entries in the addy book.
Until now I've had at least 250 e-mail addy's and they are all gone!

Stay calm.

Open up your address book. There should be a block that says, "Show names from the: and a blank box. See if you have more then one "list" in there. Check on both lists - your addresses might be in one and not the other.

If that doesn't work, I'm fresh out of ideas.

No, but selling the woman to China and other locals for the sex trade is a lucrative business for the NorK's that are in charge

There was a documentary about a year or so ago. A North Korean smuggled the footage out of the north showing the conditions not only in the countryside but in one of those camps. i can't recall what it was called, but I vividly remember the scenes. There was a documentary about a year or so ago. A North Korean smuggled the footage out of the north showing the conditions not only in the countryside but in one of those camps. i can't recall what it was called, but I vividly remember the scenes. Shocking and disturbing does NOT come close to describing it.

That alone would have me considering forcing out the current regime by any means necessary if i were in charge

to think that those sorts of things are going to be happening to our (probably) kidnapped American journalists in my opinion is a declaration of war against the American people. Imagine if that was your sister or daughter.

I say we negotiate for their release, but if that fails, then full-scale invasion should be imminent. Furthermore, fuck China and fuck Russia. We don't need their nod or their participation; they're the world's two most irresponsible world powers anyway.

They are still our Citizens. The O' fails to act to secure their release from a position of strength and how many U.S. Citizens abroad suddenly become targets for kidnapping knowing the current administration has no will to act? Also, the war is still technically on from the 1950's... there has never been a peace treaty or formal end to it. Yet more signs of inflation:
Mortgage-Bond Yields Jump to Highest Since Fed’s Buying Plan

Yields on Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac mortgage securities climbed to their highest since Nov. 24, the day before the Federal Reserve announced plans to buy the bonds to drive down interest rates on new home loans.

Yields on Washington-based Fannie Mae’s current-coupon 30- year fixed-rate mortgage bonds rose 0.15 percentage point to 5.05 percent as of 4 p.m. in New York, according to data compiled by Bloomberg. That’s up from 3.94 percent on May 20.

Yields on the securities rose faster than rates on benchmark Treasuries today because the U.S. central bank hasn’t taken action in response to soaring home-financing costs, which the Fed has been influencing through debt purchases in a bid to stabilize the housing market, said Walt Schmidt, a mortgage-bond strategist at FTN Financial in Chicago.

“The fact that the Fed has not come in and supported the ‘national mortgage rate,’ that has gotten the market spooked,” Schmidt said in a telephone interview today.

Didn't Obama just announce in the last two weeks that we're 'out of money'? The big question is: Do we really have the resources available right now to enter into a military standoff with lil' kimmy - and take out radical islam at the same time? His timing is very calculated - and i think, unfortunately, with Obama and Pelosi at the helm, he might get what he wants - again.

Spiking Treasury yields a stumbling block for U.S. stocks
Rising mortgage rates could dent housing market just as it begins to recover

NEW YORK (MarketWatch) -- Escalating Treasury yields risk hitting the U.S. stock market with a one-two punch, as higher yields increase the allure of bonds as an investment alternative to equities as well as posing a potential drag on the economy.

"There are two legs to that story, both of them bad. As yields on the 10-year go higher, the more attractive that investment would be to equity investors, so there is an asset allocation argument to be made," said Art Hogan, chief market strategist at Jefferies & Co.

North Korean Camps

20 minutes.
Interview with escapees form NorKo Camps.

Chilling stuff.

One concentration camp is 20 x 20 square miles.
A place where the word 'freedom' is unknown.
Where mothers beat their babies rather than
hold them. Thank you for posting the video.

There is a one hour version of the film with more
detail. That film was presented at a google sponsored
lecture. For all google's faults - such as in not commemorating
D-Day - this sole film redeems google.

Also, the NYTimes, ran a story today saying that Obama's Cairo
speech had a decisive effect on the Lebanon elections. Yes,
I am wary of Obama's approach but if the Times is correct, then
President Obama needs be applauded on that one.

That is not to take away from the tremendous amount of work
to be done, and the frightful time we are in. Nor is it meant to
take away from what these two young journalists are going to
experience - supposedly only - for the next two years. jcm, thank
you for your posting. I feel mortified by the revelation. God bless us all.
And tonight especially for those two young women.

Why is buckwheat flour so expensive?

In order to expedite the separation of foolish organic-brained yuppies from their sweet, sweet money, that's why.

Tip from my dead-broke days: Those dinky 1½ lb. bags that Bob's Red Mill Organic Grains are sold in will fit nicely down the front of a gentleman's trousers -- creating a basket that makes the ladies say oooooh-la-la, while stretching your food dollar through petty thievery.

Tip that doesn't involve shoplifting: Check out markets that cater to "ethnic" immigrants -- where you can often find specialty grains and flours that are priced as everyday staples, rather than marked-up "health" items. Mind you, I can't recall ever seeing buckwheat flour -- but rice flour, lentil flour, chickpea flour, mungbean flour, millet flour, definitely.

re: #49 J.S.

CNN's Rick Sanchez program played an audio of one of his "viewers" exclaiming that this was all George Bush's fault, and furthermore North Korean justice was far preferable to AmeriKKKa's since, after all, the North Koreans gave the 2 gals a speedy trial unlike those poor, deprived detainees at Gitmo. (yet another CNN bozo viewer who's in need of an American citizenship primer -- grade school level, I'd say).

I'd rather crack those viewers over the head with a cluebat.

power is fcking w/ his head.
and for a shallow, needy, not too bright, dork, this is a big problem.
he lacks grounding and a true understanding of how the world works on a grand scale or even btw people.
it is going to get worse. he is too enamored of himself.

This does not make sense. With the whole GLOBAL WARMING issue, I thought North Korea, with its complete lack of energy consumptions would be best buds with Algore.

553 mrclark  Mon, Jun 8, 2009 7:44:24pm

thanks sattv4u2 and pre-Boomer Marine brat, I had no idea the Chinese were so desperate for bony malnourished women.

Strange though, I've heard that many Chinese in the sex trade are brought over here to the states and put in brothels scattered across North America. If that's true, it seems they're importing North Koreans for the sex trade and exporting Chinese for the sex trade. Sad for the women unless (unbelievably) it somehow provides a better way of life for them than they had previously.

re: #547 Iron Fist

That's not likely to improve for at least the next three and a half years. It is hard to believe it, but we've almost managed to get the first half-year of the Reign of the One on Earth under our belt. Seven more half-years, and it will hopefully be over. Obama has the feel of a one-term President, especially with all of the looming disaster. And gas prices headed notrh once more...

I sincerely hope and pray you are correct.

re: #442 HoosierHoops

The alternative:
NK builds more nukes and someday uses them on South Korea, Japan or Alaska or Hawaii or the US either directly or through proxies/sales to terrorists etc.

Two thoughts come to mind:
We keep putting of the pain of a re-heated conflict in the hope that NK will collapse. Maybe we'll get lucky and they'll implode, but I doubt it.

The other is thought is; when we won;t fight over the little things we will not fight for anything larger-the government that fails to protect it's citizen invites either outside aggression or insurrection or both.

556 tblot  Mon, Jun 8, 2009 9:22:44pm

I hate to say the right thing to do is block everythoing going into NK until and get the chinese to help How many years have they done this.

re: #82 opnion

If we initiated war with NK, we would be pretty much on our own.
The Korean War was savage & we didn't lose , but the NK regime survived, so they won too.
They have denounced the Armistice, so technically a state of war exists now. If it came to it in my opinion, the smart thing would be to take out the capital by air and all of the infrastructure.

What infrastructure?

I'm bummed. The Gore connection raises such a wealth of entertaining "crimes" that one could theorize these ladies were found guilty of, yet the gravity of the situation for them requires I must bite my tongue. I just hope they didn't get unto this by doing something stupid (besides - ugh! ... can't go there!), like those nice missionary girls who went to the Middle East to "educate" school kids, and wound up in trouble for allegedly proselytizing. The nerve of those Muslims, accusing missionaries of preaching Christianity to their kids (/sarc). Talk about a "disaster waiting to happen"!

But who knows? They could just have been at the wrong place, at the wrong time. It's a bad business, either way, to be sure.

If it's OK with China and South Korea, it's OK with me.

...'Cause I just don't know if the NORKs - bad as they are - are bad ENOUGH to risk getting the Chinese all crazy with us.

There's also the matter of the South Koreans being obvious interested parties in that sort of action. Is North Korea a bad enough situation that we would put the lives of hundreds of thousands of South Koreans on the line? That still seems like a hard sell, to me, but I could be wrong.

I wonder if the former Embassador was speaking in a unilateral context.

561 saxking20  Tue, Jun 9, 2009 1:18:20am

Anyone ever watched algore's Current TV? I've watched and have seen these young reporter/videographers infiltrate the Somali pirates dens and go behind the scenes in Mexico, etc. I don't believe they understand the risks they are taking or they truly believe they are bullet proof.........

I'm guessing these girls probably were playing with fire and didn't think the NK's would grab them.

It's kinda like the students at Kent State that got shot by the troops. No one had ever meant it before when they were told to stop. Mom & Dad didn't.........

I hope the girls get home ok but the incident should never have happened.

562 quickjustice  Tue, Jun 9, 2009 6:31:31am

I'll repeat what I've said before: We should defeat North Korea without war. All that's required is to open the Chinese and South Korean borders to millions of North Korean refugees, depopulating the country. The international community would have to prepare for such an onslaught, and it would be costly. It would be cheaper than a nuclear war, however.

563 MTF  Tue, Jun 9, 2009 7:21:41am

Even though Al Gore annoys me to no end, I think Ling and Lee might just be heroes. They chose to report from so close to the Chinese/NK border to make a point in their story, I guess, and you never see that kind of courage from big-time MSM anymore. In this age of a gravy-sucking, mud crawling compliant press, seeing a couple of journalists actually set out to intentionally prod the tyrant snake is very refreshing. Mary Mapes and her ilk could actually learn something here about real reporting!

I'd like to know if China was complicit in their kidnapping, by the way. Why were there NK troops on the Chinese side of the border? How did they know the reporters travel plans? Why hasn't China said something?

564 drcordell  Tue, Jun 9, 2009 7:52:57am

re: #563 MTF

Apparently China was complicit in their arrest, because they were actually snatched from the Chinese side of the North Korean border. China either helped them do it, or condoned North Korean security forces operating in Chinese territory. Regardless, China is where the pressure needs to be brought to bear if these women are going to get out of prison any time soon.

My question is, if these women are subjected to beatings, stripped of clothing and alternately roasted and frozen, waterboarded and then tied in stress positions, are we going to label it torture?

565 MarineVet  Tue, Jun 9, 2009 11:16:16am

Their cameraman and guide escaped capture! They were probably involved in the story of how North Koreans are starving so badly that they sneak off to China for work and then come back with the money to feed their families. Mr Kim did not like the image destroying aspect of this report so did what every other dictator does captures the puppets and then has them put away. As far as the Al Gore connection it must have been for an over all global warming piece on the nasty carbon emitting factories in China that these people go to work at thus the compliance with China and the border crossing snatch team........

With The One borrowing from the Chinese, what are you going to do? You are talking about China having us by the balls, at least financially. Now we want China to help us save the reporters? Why would they? The only way they will would be for propaganda too promote us going into massive debt to them. We fought communism for 60 years. Now we are going to throw in the towel to socialism? My dad, who fought North Korea and the Chinese with the 2nd Infantry as a machine gunner, must be spinning in the grave.
How many lattes do we get now each month with the dumb-ass Stimulus Package?

567 hous bin pharteen  Tue, Jun 9, 2009 12:00:03pm

I think calling it the Stimulus Package, maybe Obama has gone to the Bunny Ranch to many times.

568 MarineVet  Tue, Jun 9, 2009 1:12:01pm

Only "stimulates" his grasp for federalism in the name of progressivism and the goal is a little bit of fascism and socialism to boot. This is a very bitter concoction that I refuse to drink from!
