Monday Night Music: Preston Reed, ‘Night Ride’

This piece by acoustic madman Preston Reed is called “Night Ride,” from the album Handwritten Notes. (Don’t be lulled into complacency by the slow first half… the second has some pretty flashy two-fisted guitarotechnics.)

Remember when a can of coffee went from 16 to 13 ounces?
I noticed recently they are doing the same thing with paper towels rolls. I thought, hey these are cheaper than usual,
then I looked , and they were 2/3 the diameter of the
old ones. oh well, what can you do.

And what is impressive is how smooth the travel really is... the rails themselves are a marvel, not just the train.

Oh, and the train stations put anything in the US to shame, too (other than the architecture of some 19th century US stations.)

Just a suggestion, could we have a "book thread" like maybe once a week? I'm always on the lookout for new authors. A couple of weeks ago Charles recommended Ken Bruen. That turned out not to be my cup of tea, but a book thread would be nice to go along with the Kindle threads, even for those of us who covet the Kindle but get hardcovers from the library.

Just a suggestion.

High speed rail without a supporting local rail infrastructure is a no-go, IMO. That is what is overlooked when drooling over the Shinkansen. Whenever I rode Nozomi (the express) I took the local trains/subway to the Shinkansen station. No car was necessary.

Are you looking for new authors, as in those who are still alive and perhaps not well-known or others who may be dead but are still not well known (but arguably worth reading)?

I'm not sure he had a genre. If you search on Google, you'll find many hits. If you like the sound of it, try The Deptford Trilogy. It's more of a mystery than anything else, but markedly influenced by Jung.

Apt title.

...It could still be a great business

For all its peculiarities, the car industry is no dinosaur—Toyota, for instance, is a byword for manufacturing excellence. But the unevolved GM deserved extinction. Detroit employed so many people and figured so large in American culture that governments felt they had to protect it; but in doing so, they made it vulnerable to less-coddled competitors from abroad. By trying to keep their car industry big, America’s leaders ended up preventing it from becoming good. There is a lesson in that which all governments would do well to learn.

So I may have missed it from earlier today, but was there any talk about the latest animal rights abuses by Gazan terrorists?

Under the cover of morning fog, some 10 gunmen staged a failed assault at the Karni cargo crossing into Gaza on Monday, in which horses laden with explosives were used, a security source told The Jerusalem Post.

Four terrorists killed in firefight with IDF on Gaza border
At least four terrorists and a number of their horses were killed in the ensuing exchange of fire with the IDF. No soldiers were wounded.

"A very big terrorist attack was thwarted," the security source told the Post.

"These terrorists were armed with a huge quantity of explosives. They launched a combined attack, using mortars, and attempted to approach the border fence with booby-trapped horses to harm our soldiers, before firing on our force," he added.

Not to mention the incredible skill of the IDF! Taken by surprise, early in the morning, by a mixed force of suicide-vest wearing, booby-trapped horse-leading, and mortar firing terrorists, they managed to take out 4, without even a scratch.

Congratulations on being the creator of a new

Evil Plan (tm)!

Your objective is simple: World Domination.
Your motive is a little bit more complex: Revenge
Stage One

To begin your plan, you must first incinerate a news reporter. This will cause the world to slaughter a sacred calf to appease the gods, horrified by your arrival. Who is this criminal mastermind? Where did they come from? And why do they look so good in battle armor?

Stage Two

Next, you must disintegrate the moon (ooh, tides!). This will all be done from a underground secret headquarters of doom, a mysterious place of unrivaled dark glory. Upon seeing this, the world will die in a way you just don't want to think about, as countless hordes of computer programmers hasten to do your every bidding.

Stage Three

Finally, you must tauntingly wave your thermonuclear missiles, bringing about an end to sanity. Your name shall become synonymous with fuzzy bunnies, and no man will ever again dare take your lunch money. Everyone will bow before your mind-boggling insanity, and the world will have no choice but to give you control of the planet.

Small crowd joins Cindy Sheehan-led Bush protest in Dallas

About 50 people joined Cindy Sheehan, the antiwar activist whose son was killed in the war on Iraq, in a protest this afternoon near former President George W. Bush’s Preston Hollow home.

The march was sponsored by the Dallas Peace Center, which has been involved in protests with Sheehan since 2005, when the California mother staged a prolonged demonstration outside Bush’s ranch in Crawford, Texas.

Protesters gathered about 4:30 p.m. at the southwest corner of Preston Road and Royal Lane. From there, they walked about a mile to John J. Pershing Elementary School, which is near the Bush home on Daria Place...

I've listened to it a couple times now, it's very hard to find anything to offer creative criticism on but I think the singer needs more confidence. Back off from the mic and really belt it out. Whoever is singing has the voice and sense of pitch but I think the first section could be helped by more aggressive vocals. Shyness is an instinct but there's some pretty good vocal talent there, don't crowd the mic and sing like you're afraid the neighbors might hear. Back off and really belt it out.

I've looked at the site. There are several articles about Wilders, but there's also a lot about the British Home Secretary's own goal of banning Michael Savage, some details of Ezra Levant's "scrape" with the HRC and a whole section devoted to the excesses of the UN. So, on a first inspection, I would not personally dismiss the site as bad.

Then when it comes to uploading the website, it tells me they are wrong. Tried resetting the password, still getting the same message. Also tried installing a different program to do the FTP upload, it is doing the same thing, with the additional delight of playing a little squeaky high pitched "uh-oh!" when it fails.

I couldn't believe my ears when I heard this report on NPR today. The subject: behavioral economics and its growing role in the Obama administration. For those of you with rudimentary knowledge of psychology, it appears that this is an unholy marriage of Skinnerian behaviorism and economic theory, culminating in a shiny new justification for authoritarianism. Note the repeated use of the term "the human animal" in the report. Read it/listen to it. It's scary, and it explains EVERYTHING.

This disturbs me on several levels.

195 jcm  Mon, Jun 8, 2009 7:58:31pm

BREITBART: Know thy enemy: This is not your mother's Democratic Party

The Democratic Party's attitude to elections is admirable: Win. And recent history has shown it will do anything to do so.

When, if not now, will Republicans develop such a fighting spirit?

Democrats invest - with taxpayer money, mind you - in groups like ACORN that, among other sordid tactics, seek out Skid Row bodies and wheel them to polling places. All the Democratic National Committee needs are vans and smelling salts. Pop culture and the "education system" have done the rest, making "D" the default choice on Election Day.

Democrats brazenly take policy positions - think government services and even amnesty for illegal immigrants - not because they are the right thing to do, but because they are time-tested demographic bribes. Forget cigarettes and beer, Democrats would distribute needles, methadone, medical marijuana and biscotti in voter goodie bags if they could get away with it.

Democrats long ago jettisoned America's melting-pot ideal - E Pluribus Unum ("Out of Many, One") - because it imperils their campaign for permanent rule. Splitting the country into separate identity groups and playing them against each other works a lot better. And anyone who disagrees is a racist.

Win. Win. Win.

[snip]

In the next election cycle, things need to be drastically different. Democracy is not Augusta National Golf Club. It's a messy free-for-all, and in a two-party system, the GOP will not survive if it doesn't accept the fact that the Democrats are its enemy and that it must begin to play for keeps. That means finding another Lee Atwater - only meaner - and not apologizing when we get him.

Algore Global Warming Update #121

Recent Upswing in Lightning

HAVE THUNDERSTORMS BEEN MORE ELECTRIFIED THIS YEAR?

One of the reasons for this could be colder-than-normal weather across the northern tier of the country that has suppressed the number of thunderstorms and has significantly reduced the number of tornadoes this year. The number of reported tornadoes so far this year is 685, just over half of the average annual amount, which is 1,297.

According to Long Range Expert Joe Bastardi, areas from the northern Plains into the Northeast will have a "year without a summer." The jet stream, which is suppressed abnormally south this spring, is also suppressing the number of thunderstorms that can form. The ones that do form in areas of the Ohio Valley and West are forming in places with very cold temperatures, which can lead to more electrified thunderstorms than normal this year.

After a few more minutes of surfing round the site, I still don't get the impression that there's an evil cause here. Their policy statement sounds reasonable, although clearly there's an anti-Jihadi bias. If it turns out that it's being used as a front for fascism, I would of course agree with your analysis, and would wonder also why a person like Ezra Levant, could allow himself to be duped. However, I can't see any evidence that that is the case.

As well it should. Skinnerian behaviorism is probably the most disturbing branch of psychological theory, and its central thesis (if I understand it correctly) is that we are animals to be programmed. I hope that doesn't make me sound like a FEMA camper. The likelihood is that the officials subscribing to this kind of theory have a more benign and less comprehensive programming agenda than did Skinner, but the fact remains that this is fundamentally contrary to democracy and representative government. In this model, government represents the ideals of a few visionaries, not the will of the people, constrained by the law.

re: #210 Killgore Trout

The ACLU (as I'm sure you must be aware) faces the same charges over and over again. Whenever the ACLU takes up an issue, they're accused of political partisanship, and the detractors of the ACLU maintain that they're not really a non-profit organization championing "Free Speech", only champion a "cause" if it's leftist "free speech"...(sometimes I think the critics of the ACLU have made a very good case in support of this argument...) So I don't know if making an allegation that organization X is really NOT all about supporting Free Speech but is far more interested in supporting the political claims of an identified political orientation (the so-called Free Speech organization is not "even handed" or "non-partisan") is all that unexpected or outrageous... (it's simply what we have now-a-days...obvious bias masquerading as something else...not that "two wrongs make a right" but it's just "reality.")

Frankly, I would hope they would have enough confidence in their ideas to present them to the public in a forthright manner and let debate take its course. But that isn't going to happen. It's easier to "nudge," a polite way of saying manipulate.

Every social-welfare program in the history of the United States of America has been based on some philosophy.

What is most disturbing about Skinner is he came up with this massive theory of human behavior without observing, you know, humans. Just animals. Because if you can teach pigeons pingpong then it must be because their alcoholic stepfather beat them!

(I never found Skinner persuasive. There was always something vaugly inhuman about his theories of human behavior)

Well, the fact of the matter is that The Kid knows that if he does X, Y will follow.

Oh, wait. I forgot to apply electic shocks to him!

Budget plan could doom CalWORKS aid to families, children

Could California become the first state in the nation to do away with welfare?

That doomsday scenario is on the table as lawmakers wrestle with a staggering $24.3 billion budget deficit.

County welfare directors are "in shock" at the very idea of getting rid of CalWORKs, which has been widely viewed as one of the most successful social programs in the state's history, said Bruce Wagstaff, director of the Department of Human Assistance in Sacramento.

Like many idiots, I thought I had figured out what nobody else had tried before. It turns out that others have already tried things similar to my aeroponics system and it doesn't work. The margin of error is minuscule and makes it impractical for normal people not living in a space station. But when I said Mandy was right about there not being enough private services available in all areas for all people, I was thinking specifically of a charity 7 other Vietnam Vets and I started when I lived in NYC PURELY to help those Vets get jobs. The US Dept. of Labor had just reported that Vietnam Vets were SEVEN TIMES more likely to be unemployed than their non- veteran age peers. Over something like 11 years we managed to find jobs for over 4,000 of them. And when I say we ran LEAN, I mean LEAN. But we knew, when we had to close the doors, that there were at least three times that many who needed our help and we simply lacked the ability to help them. And we finished with the NY Attorney General giving us a rating that showed 96% of all funds raised went to help those Vets get jobs.
So while I appreciate that private charities CAN operate leaner and more efficiently and directly, I also know that they can't reach everyone who needs help.

372 Maui Girl  Mon, Jun 8, 2009 9:03:59pm

Relax everyone. Obama has promised 600,000 jobs! Does it ever occur to these government morons that all they're doing is hiring taxpayers and paying them with them with their own money. It's like making you work twice for the same dollar! And then the government will dwindle it down even more in "payroll" taxes and then dole that out for some other job you work down the line and get paid for with, yes, your "payroll" tax dollars and on and on it goes. Makes me dizzy.

I like the story from earlier today about the celebrity on the NBC reality show who was tortured. Report: NBC ‘Tortures’ Starlet Into Hospital No comment yet from Keith Olberman about how Paul Telegdy, NBC's Exec VP of Alternative Programming is the new worst person in the world.

What happened to Heidi Pratt is not torture. Torture is knowing how much money she gets paid to parade herself around for the cameras (on "The Hills" she and her husband make $60,000 per episode). How someone as fake her gets paid that much is question to which I can find no sane answer.

Atheist cleaners could sue Christian care homes over crucifixes, warn bishops

The way the bill is written means non-Christians could sue for harassment if church authorities do not remove religious imagery, according to Monsignor Andrew Summersgill, general secretary of the Bishops' Conference of England and Wales.

He said the bill, currently being examined by Parliament's Equality Bill Committee, could have a "chilling effect" on religious expression.

Under the terms of the bill, harassment is defined as "unwanted conduct with the purpose or effect of violating a person's dignity, or of creating an intimidating, hostile, degrading or offensive environment".

Bishops are concerned that religious authorities could be left in an impossible legal position, because under the bill it would be up to the employer to prove that displaying such an image did not amount to harassment or an employee.

Saudi woman minister needs permission to be on TV

RIYADH (Reuters) - Saudi Arabia's first woman cabinet minister cannot appear on television without permission, a newspaper quoted her as saying on Monday.

Noura al-Faiz's appointment in February as deputy minister for women's education was hailed as a big step for the integration of women in conservative Saudi Arabia where a puritanical form of Islam bans women from driving, voting and mixing with unrelated men.

"I don't take my veil off and I will not appear on television unless it is allowed for us to do so," Faiz told the daily Shamss, which published a picture of the deputy minister wearing a headscarf with her face showing.

There was a joke after the '72 Arab Israel war.

Russian instructor pilots taught the Arabs everything they needed to know, just before they earned their wings one pilot asked the Russian, "what about landing?"

The Russian replied, "Don't worry the Israelis teach you that part."

I suppose, but I can't imagine why they'd do that. Obama has declared that he's not going to do anything to stop Iran from building nuclear weapons. So Iran's best move would be to quietly continue their nuclear program, without doing anything to change Obama's mind. Then, only after assembling a substantial nuclear arsenal, would it be in their interests to attack anyone. Overtly, I mean. Of course Iranian soldiers have been in Iraq training "militants" for years, but apparently we've all agreed no to talk about that.

One: note the smoke trails, bad fuel or poor maintenance.

The other problem is that the tactic only has to slip a little and the raiders are in for a hard time of it. Even if they survive (which they most likely will), active opposition makes a successful strike much harder.

That is extremely cool. How do you suppose it locks onto targets? I can't imagine a mosquito would have much of a radar signature. And optical tracking wouldn't work well at night, would it?

It's too much for Israel. Even if it was 100% successful, the economic cost, the political cost are way too large, and the military benefit of only temporary value. A believe the term is Pyrrhic Victory. Is the US even prepared to do this sort of thing for Israel anymore? I wouldn't be surprised to see a strong condemnation of an Israeli attack by the United States, and no greater American involvement than perhaps shifting some assets to oil-rich Arab countries for their protection in case the conflict were to spill over. It goes without saying that it requires wise diplomats. Reagan and George Schultz threaded that needle during the Iran-Iraq war.

And who do we have now?

Iran's weapons against Israel are money and religion. If they get nukes, maybe that too.

Is Israel prepared to leave Tehran a glass dish? Not on a first strike. Maybe on a second strike. I wonder if Israel has not fission bombs but fusion. All sorts of horrible scenarios, and Obama stars in many of them.

Mostly boosted fusion, like ours.

And who do we have now?

A community organizer and a Alinskite lawyer from Arkansas.

re: #539 Floral Giraffe

I should have posted that it requires wise diplomats dealing from a position of strength. Suffice to say I am not impressed with our current leadership.

Just plain scary, IMHO.

Night Honcos.

Send but your troops and the prize is ours. Kill a few and take the whole. thus the peaceable part of mankind will be continually over-run by the vile and abandoned. While they neglect the means of self defence. They supposed quietude of a good man allures the ruffian; while on the other hand, arms like laws discourage and keep the invader and the plunderer in awe, and preserve order in the world as well as property. The balance of power is the scale of peace. The same balance would be preserved were all the world destitute of arms, for all would be alike; but since some will not others dare not lay them aside. And while a single nation refuses to lay them down, it is proper that all should keep them up. Horrid mischief would ensue were one half the world deprived of the use of them; for while avarice and ambition have a place in the heart of man, the weak will become a prey to the strong. The history of every age and nation establishes these truths, and facts need but little arguments when they prove themselves.
Thomas Paine

I have not been a fan of the UN, and having just finished John Bolton's "Surrender is not an option", I am even less of a fan of the UN.
I miss Jeanne Kirkpatrick. I need to find a good biography of her.
I LOVE Bolton's fix for the UN, of member contributions, rather than assessments. SIGH. Not with this administration.

re: #538 MrPaulRevere

George Schultz was a gem, I am a huge fan. He was the last Secretary of State that displayed a high degree of competence and did not seem to view the State department as a separate branch of government.

re: #544 Floral Giraffe

The whole thing is scary, and though I'm no fan of the Obama administration and have little faith in their ability to deal with the issue, one must recognize that the Iran and NKO problems were brewing on Bush's watch and little was done to stop them. It's a rock and a hard place situation all along. Hell, NOBODY knows what to do with these loons, and until one of them flips on the crazy light full-on there will be little political will anywhere in the US or elsewhere to strike. Israel especially is in just a horrible spot.

Jeanne Kirkpatrick was another gem. She was one of the 'Henry Jackson democrats' who left the party and worked for Reagan. I love her quote from the '84 GOP convention re. Democrat foreign policy... "They always blame America first".

re: #551 MrPaulRevere

I got to shake her hand, in a receiving line, once. I didn't know enough about her to be in awe of her, as I am today. So very wise & articulate!
Do you have a good biography of her to recommend?

Well, good grief, it should be a hit here. 53% of the population voted for Obama ... that's pretty dense.

Dense like neutron star material.

re: #552 Floral Giraffe

I cant say I do, unfortunately. I did find a link with many of her books and essays: [Link: www.spiritus-temporis.com...]

As usual I'm late to the party, but FYI, you can buy Preston Reed's album from Amazon at the link supplied by Charles for $22.99 or from cdbaby.com for only $16.00. Just doing my part in these trying economic times. And I too, was saddened to hear of Kenny Rankin's passing.

556 mjbrytt  Tue, Jun 9, 2009 4:35:01am

Charles, thank you for introducing me to so many new artists. I would not have discovered them one my own. You have a great site. I love the articles and commentary. Someday should our paths ever cross, Id' like to buy you a beer (or a fruity drink of your choice ;) ) and talk about evolution and creationism. Keep up the great work!

For the record, I'm pretty sure the train in that video is Indian.

Thanks, I was wondering.

The first half of that sounded like Ry Cooder. The second half sounded like Preston Reed.

re: #358 Killgore Trout

Hey, you're the one who listened to it several times... that will do it.

Thanks Killgore... I passed your feedback on to my musical buddy. I'll try to post a new tune once in a while in a music-related thread, since nobody threw eggs this time (yet). :)
