What's sad is I live in Manassas, and yes, that Denny's will cause you to lose faith in America.

Its funny though because many of those machines AREN'T owned by the restaurant, they are leased though, and many of those places DO offer small change refunds and such.

I know soda machines are run the same way and only the delivery man who restocks the machine has the key to open 'er up.

Paglia has an interesting take on the Great One's Cairo speech:

Obama's cursory two-sentence summary of the past relationship between Islam and the West -- jumping from "conflict and religious wars" to "colonialism" -- seemed vague and timid. While there was a mini-list of Muslim ideas and inventions (including the questionable assertion that we owe our "mastery of pens and printing" to the Arabs), no comparable credit was given to the enormous Western contributions to science, medicine and technology. But the gravest omission was that Obama failed to fully articulate the most basic Western concepts of legal process and civil liberties, which have inspired reformers around the world. The president of the U.S. should be an eloquent ambassador of those ideals wherever he goes.

It was also puzzling how a major statement about religion could seem so detached from religion. Obama projected himself as a floating spectator of other people's beliefs (as in his memory of hearing the call to prayer in Indonesia). Though he identified himself as a Christian, there was no sign that it goes very deep. Christianity seemed like a badge or school scarf, a testament of affiliation without spiritual convictions or constraints. This was one reason, perhaps, for the odd failure of the speech to acknowledge the common Middle Eastern roots of Judeo-Christianity and Islam, for both of whom the holy city of Jerusalem remains a hotly contested symbol.

Read it all. It's a fair assessment from one who supported him for prez, and not far off from the criticism many of us at lgf had of this speech.

Folks, tomorrow morning I put my daughter on a plane, and she will fly to Berlin with a group from her school for a 12-day tour of Germany, the Czech Republic, Switzerland and France.

I am one of those people who never fly. I hate it. I hate it. I really really hate it. The thought of it scares me to death. And I will not sleep at all tomorrow until I know her plane has landed safely (which will actually be around 1 or 2 a.m. my time day after tomorrow).

Anyhow - whatever process or ritual y'all perform for good luck (prayer, crossing of fingers, etc), I would be most appreciative if you would send good vibes out tomorrow in favor of a safe trip and safe arrival for my daughter's group. And I thank you.

I think you're right. Speaking as a resident of a coastal blue state, I can say that I'm pretty much surrounded by Obama voters who do believe that everyone in, say, Indiana, is exactly like the people in this video.

I will.

I can't stop you from fretting, but try to fret a little less for just a few minutes and my work will have been done. She will be fine. I did one of those school trips of Europe when I was a kid (it damn near broke my parents, but they were able to send me). The amazing experience she'll have and the stories she'll tell will make the fretting worth it.

On a more serious, but relatively unimportant note:
The thing about this "humor" is that it elevates Obama to an elite level and denigrates middle class/poorer Americans. It is not a jab at Obama, it is a worshipful swipe at those that cannot keep up with the elevated expectations of The Messiah and His Team. The difference is subtele, but much appreciated, I am sure in liberal circles that consider themselves equally elevated in society.

IIRC, as she was standing at our table lecturing us, another similar cockroach went walking across the floor right near her feet. We pointed it out to her as additional evidence, but by then she had already made up her mind about us.

Good evening.

Keep a close eye on the bond market tomorrow:
Supreme Court lifts stay on Chrysler sale

SAN FRANCISCO (MarketWatch) -- The Supreme Court on Tuesday cleared the way for the sale of Chrysler LLC to Fiat SpA by rejecting a plea to block the sale of most of the U.S. automaker's assets, according to media reports.

Dow Jones Newswires reported that after considering appeals filed by several Indiana pension funds and consumer groups, the high court lifted a temporary hold on the sale.

The bulk of Chrysler's assets can now be sold to Fiat (CH:FIAT 0.00, 0.00, 0.00%) , which is set to take over the U.S. automaker though a bankruptcy process brokered by the U.S. and Canadian governments.

Upshot is you have had a massive redistribution of wealth from the bond holders to the union.

I'm not an attorney, but I understand that one of the results of this decision is that the contractual rights of bondholders everywhere are now in some doubt.

Wow, I thought it would get overturned.

I think "upset" is the wrong word. Ms. Paglia doesn't get "upset" - she calmly and methodically rips people to shreds with logic but is fair - she is one of the most non-partisan writers I can think of.

Ms. Paglia will retain her sceptical eye - she did before the election, though she was for Obama. She made it clear that she liked what she saw as a steady, dignified, and thoughtful person. Now, I disagreed, and you did too. I disagreed because I knew his track record and also considered his ruthlessness in shafting opponents and choosing friends for political gain in the past - thoughtful to me is a pose on his part. I think the erudite type tended to fall for that pose more because they WANTED to believe.

On the flip side, she called his speeches soaring but vague.

She also has defended Governor Palin several times, calling her speeches thoughtful and precise when others made fun of her.

Like I said above, if you want high-falutin' and fancy, go someplace high-falutin' and fancy. Like TGI Friday's. You know, with their fancy "chipotle sauce" and their no cockroaches and everything, acting like they're all better than everyone else...

IIRC, Denny's did get in a brouhaha for racism some years back... came up with some flimsy excuse to not serve some black guys, who just happened to be US Secret Service agents. OOPS.

As soon as I read the headline about that, I knew it happened exactly as the guys described it, since it had also happened to me. I'm glad Denny's got called on it and hope they put a stop to such behavior. There is no place for that in this country.

Link on Sambo's

Started in Santa Barbara, California by Sam Battistone and Newell "Bo" Bohnett, it was named "SamBo's" after themselves. Soon it became tied up with the story of a dark skinned boy who liked to play with tigers. Pictures depicting this story were placed all over the restaurant.

Other Sambo's began to appear all over the country. At their height, in 1979, the chain had 1,200 restaurants in 47 states.

But some groups viewed the Sambo name as being pejorative. New stores couldn't be built because the local governments wouldn't let a racist name like that be used in their community. The company began losing money fast. They tried a couple of name changes for new outlets: The Jolly Tiger and Sam's. But nothing worked. Bankruptcy happened very quickly.

By 1982, only one Sambo's was left... the original one at 216 W. Cabrillo Blvd. in Santa Barbara. And it remains open today.

For those who didn't know, while the chain went out of business, the restaurant itself never shut down!

I expect to see the interest rate on corporate bonds to jump tomorrow to reflect the higher risk now due to the loss of rights caused by this decision.

That means even more inflation and the market value of the bonds will drop.

The United States of America now has a "country risk" premium.

What does that mean in the big picture, 3?

It means that it will be a lot harder for private enterprise to raise capital in the market.

It means that the pension funds involved just had millions of dollars of assets taken form them.

It means pension funds elsewhere will likely dump some of their bond holdings and replace them with stock or CD's.

It means the economy will grow even slower due to less capital formation.

It means some capital will move overseas where the rights of bond holders may be actually respected.

I'm another one of those people. A year and a half ago my husband planned a trip to NY at Christmas time for our 28th anniversary. I've kept him (us) from going to so many places because of my fear of flying, so I went to my doc and got some lovely pills to relax me. Took a double dose each way and was happy as a clam. Talk about major issues...

I liked Sambo's. I loved that story as a kid - I had a Viewmaster of it. He was Indian, dammit. Tigers! Palm trees! Turbans! Indian!

We had a Sambo's in my home town that had been a Denny's. My then husband, when we visited, remarked that it was the first really good Denny's he'd ever eaten in.

The Sambo's sold Little Brave Sambo dolls and books. Lord knows they tried to sell the brave angle.

There are people that REALLY DO that. I've witnessed it and backed up the management once at an IHOP. The party brought in their own drinks with a few bags.
Manager never even said thank-you to me or the lady sitting in the next both who also saw what was going on.

My wife has much the same approach to flying as do you.

When we moved to Paducah, my wife and I flew into Memphis en route to Paducah. As our plane landed in Memphis we taxied past a plane that had just had a bad landing and was being foamed (I guess because of fire danger). The wife refused to continue with the flight, and insisted that we rent a car for the rest of the trip.

Statistics did not soothe her mind, she wanted to drive (well, ride anyways.)

Even if you go by the conservative estimate of $10 billion (and not the $60 billion number that gets thrown around) it is still double the actual $5 Billion loss from the Chrysler bondholders.

re: #227 freetoken

In other words, if the USSC (as well as the lower court) found the decision (regarding Chrysler selling off some assets) fully within the law, are you telling me that this will be some new revelation to the bond world?

Bond holders have heretofore bought the right to be a primary creditor with the lower (on average) rate of return of bonds as compared to common stock holders.

The way this deal was structured, the Chrysler bond holders were subordinated behind the union (common stock holder) and the Gov't (same).

This now calls into question the legal status of bond holders with regard to their ability to get paid in the event of a bankruptcy.

The Indiana State pension funds just had millions of dollars of their assets, which they had spent to but that primary creditor status, taken from them.

The positive spin is this: If you are a Marxist who hates capitalism, you should have a big smile on your face now cause you have just had a large blow to capitalism achieved.

Yesterday, I saw as a main headline on the cover of a socialist magazine, and I take it in response to the idea of Obama as socialist, something to the effect of "Obama saved capitalism at the taxpayers' expense." I do find it interesting that to my knowledge, socialists are not claiming Obama as their own.

Hey y'all just a quick post for a minute (bbiaw) but as I just posted in the spinoff links, the SCOTUS did not recognize the security interests of the bondholders - notabley the Indiana Pension Fund - in the Chrysler case. Bondholders - who USED to have a super priority in bankruptcies and thus bought bonds instead of stock, even though bonds have a fixed and LOWER rate of interest - got screwed and so, IMO, did capitalism today. Who in their right mind would buy bonds in any busniess that was looking to raise money from the private sector, knowing that if the company tanks, not only will the bondholders NOT get their investments back, but the Unions (especially, apparently, the UAW) will get paid?

Niiice choice! I wasn't a big SNL watcher, but I stumbled across something by Norm MacDonald a few weeks ago and was in stitches. I think something happened on SNL that got him kicked off the show but I can't remember what.

Wikipedia sez:

Macdonald's time with Saturday Night Live effectively ended in late 1997 when he was fired from the Weekend Update segment upon the insistence of NBC West Coast Executive Don Ohlmeyer, who pressured the producers to remove him, explaining that Macdonald was "not funny." Some believe that Don Ohlmeyer's friendship with O.J. Simpson — a celebrity whom Macdonald often antagonized on the show — may have fueled Ohlmeyer's decision.

I feel like crying...it was my hometown paper growing up, along with the Herald.

Jeff Jacoby is the only reason to read Al-Globe, but lately he has seemed to be turning a bit to the left. I subscribe to his column, but deleted today's before I had even read half of it. Well first off, they need to update their site, because they demand that people petition house minority leader Gephardt and Senate minority leader Daschle. As far as using the word "progressives" I have no problem with the idea that the socialists would deem this word as more marketable than "socialist." The word "progressive" has been used in a political context regarding various leftwing groups in America for a long long time. As far as the socialist site, I saw no reference to Obama, granted I spent a less than five minutes perusing. My guess is, if these sad and lonely people thought Obama was one of them, they would be screaming it from the rooftops.

Well I looked at what you sent me as proof that they claim Obama as one of their own and it wasn't there. As far as the idea of being blinded, would you be surprised to hear that in the past, many Communists hated Democrats and the Democratic Party - believing there to be no difference between Democrats and Republicans? And further believing that voting for Democrats (or whatever liberal party) was against communist interests because it would delay the inevitable revolution. Now socialism is not communism to be sure, but I think they take the same sort of pride in being outside the conventional political system. So not as crazy a thought as you may think.

re: #421 Flyers1974

Well I looked at what you sent me as proof that they claim Obama as one of their own and it wasn't there. As far as the idea of being blinded, would you be surprised to hear that in the past, many Communists hated Democrats and the Democratic Party - believing there to be no difference between Democrats and Republicans? And further believing that voting for Democrats (or whatever liberal party) was against communist interests because it would delay the inevitable revolution. Now socialism is not communism to be sure, but I think they take the same sort of pride in being outside the conventional political system. So not as crazy a thought as you may think.

flyers1974 ... I do not want to belong to any party ... any party ... for decades I heard all the crap from the democrats about how "evil" the republicans were ... then I actually took off the blinders and took a good look at my party ... and guess what ... they will do whatever it takes to get into power ... anything ... anything ... I don't care how you swirl it ... I believe socialists are very very happy Obama is in the White House ...

All I have to say is ... Obama is the closest thing to socialism I have ever seen in a president in my life ... and IMO that is not good for this country ...

I feel awful seeing the Globe go down the dumpster. I don't remember it being so lefty, but we moved to NY in 1965 permanently, as my husband was finished with his Army service, and decided to work for a company on 128. He missed Brooklyn, and I missed NY,where we met when I was a student nurse, and he was at CCNY, so back we came. When we would visit my parents zt"l over the years, I really didn't have much time to read the papers.

The past few years I was appalled reading the Globe on line...and expected Al-NYT to drop them a few months ago.

All 4 of our kids delivered the local paper, and it was for about 2-3 years each..they were a dynasty! ;)

Now? When we get up in the AM, the papers are on our doormat, having been delivered by car. Sad.

NY is by no means liberal, but compared to Boston? A different world, I think.

On a vaguely related note: In the familiar pattern of print media being rendered obsolete by the Innerwebs, the venerable gay "all-male" smut mags Playguy, ManDate, Inches, Torso, and Honcho all went out of business in May, after having been in continuous publication since the mid '70s or early '80s. However, the company that owned these titles does continue to publish its non-gay flagship, Juggs, at least for now.

I was reading an article a couple days ago by a former employee -- not a porn model, mind you, but someone who worked in the editorial office. Back in its heyday, the company also published a number of non-pornographic magazines, including such pedestrian hobbyist titles as Knitting World and Crochet Monthly -- no joke!

Engineer decodes Air France Flight 447 emergency messages

The error messages sent by the plane show that multiple computer failures happened simultaneously, starting at 02:10 GMT, when a series of 14 warnings and failures emerged at once

[snip]

The cryptic lines contain chilling meaning.

First, the auto pilot system disengaged. Then came a basic auto flight message warning. Next, something within the flight control computer failed. Then, warning flags appeared on the primary flight displays of the captain and co-pilot. Then the rudder exceeds the limits of normal flight. And on it goes.

"With all of these failures, they don't have the information that they need to fly the aircraft in a safe environment," Darryl says. "If the pilot or first officer don't have any display functioning, then they're flying blind in the night. ... You're trying to fly the aircraft with no technology."

The rudder is interesting, the vert stab has been found separated, AA587 crashed on Long Island when the vert stab separated. Exceeding limits could separate the vert stab, which would make the plane uncontrollable and exceed flight limits and break up. But what started the cascade of failures? That remains the question.

Hey jcm - must be sleepy, cause I didn't get that story at all!
What do the fish mongers do - actually throw fish to customers?!

It's a tourist show, the fish mongers throw the fish around for show.

I had better save it too. For some reason it took me awhile to find it.

You know, I think SNL needs to hire the lizards to write their skits.

Yes, save it. I checked on YouTube, and all they had that is worthwhile worthwhile, as NBC deletes the real one for TOS violations, is this:

PETA got yelled at a couple of years ago, at Berkeley of all places, when they put up pictures of animals next to pictures of African slaves. The African American - and other - students found it incredibly offensive. To them, they were being compared to animals - totally did not occur to the PETA people. It sure as heck occurred to me and to a lot of other people.

A dead fish has dignity to them. African American students - not so much, apparently.

PETA requests halt of fish-throwing by Seattle's famous Pike Place Fish Market team

Screw PETA. I loved that place. Just to think, this time last year I was getting ready for our Alaska cruise. After it was over, on June 22nd we went to Pikes. Much fun! I enjoyed it so much. My absolutely favorite thing was all the flowers for sale. OMG I wanted to bring some on the plane but I restrained myself. There were ladies on my plane, however, who had them.

Seattle's home town, we only go down with visitors. But the Market is a great place and the fish throwing is a blast.

Sick. Comparing fish to human beings.

Back in the seventies my hubby took daughter and I to a local So Cal beach for the "grunion run" [Link: www.beachcalifornia.com...] I actually thought it was kinda like a "snipe" hunt but I went. We had the PETA types carrying placards saying "Eat an Onion, Save a Grunion". LOL My hubby reminded them about all of the organisms they were crushing under their Berkinstocks.

The thing is, they're offensive and alienating even to people who would otherwise agree with them. I used to be vegetarian but I can't stand PETA.

They really are just about the least effective political organization ever. Total laughingstock. The seakitten business is just one example among many.

Tasty, tasty seakittens... ;)

re: #515 Pvt Bin Jammin

Your nephew made an impact, and he is a hero of the best kind, among other heroes. It sadly seems that we lose so many who have so much potential. It really bugs me when on Memorial Day, etc., sales are the order of the day in far too many places, rather than honoring those who made it possible for us to have the lives we have, while they lost their lives to make it so.

When I was a kid, there were still Civil War veterans alive...and WWII was going on.

Re the sirens, etc.? I would have been totally freaked. Since 9/11, I have really over-reacted to any planes going into LaGuardia...the flight path was over us until 9/11, and for quite a few years they changed it, except on bad weather days, or a special reason, and I freak. Only when the little guys are here to I manage to put on my RN's face, where I manage to control my fear so that they don't get scared. They are way too young to even know about 9/11, as only the 9-year old granddaughter was born pre-9/11, and she was a baby when it happened.

With The One occupying the White House? I now fear there is a possibility of another 9/11, G-d forbid, as he is an enabler who made kissy face with the countries that can very well implement another attack by the wannabe 'martyrs'...

And they have the money.

Charles, I was waiting for a thread on the NYT analysis of the budget deficit alleging that "most" of the 1.2 trillion projected annual deficits is due to Bush related policies and "only a sliver" due to stimulus bills. This NYT spin ought to be Fisked thoroughly, and who better than lizards to do it.
To start with, NO percentages for tax increases was detailed and ALL of the "savings" inthe budget "covered" by those tax increases were allocated to Obama programs and stimulus packages.
Yet the Onion has captured the real inner workings of the President's private musings perfectly.
