NYT reports that AG Holder and some members of Congress were scheduled to attend the opening of a play at the museum tonight.
On Wednesday evening, members of Congress and Attorney General Eric H. Holder Jr. are to visit the Holocaust Museum for the debut of the plan “Anne and Emmett” by Janet Langhard Cohen. The play is a fictional dialogue between Anne Frank, whose diary recounted her days in hiding during the Holocaust, and Emmett Till, the black teen-ager killed by white racists in 1955.
No word on whether the shootings and the visit were connected.

Holocaust Museum shooter James Von Brunn's ex-wife says his racism 'ate him alive'
The ex-wife of the racist who stormed the U.S. Holocaust Museum described him as an abusive alcoholic whose hatred against Jews and blacks "ate him alive like a cancer."
"It's all he would talk about," the ex-wife said of James von Brunn, 89, who was wounded in a firefight with museum guards.
"When I questioned him, he would get very angry and abusive."

Wow....who'd ever suspect that a lonely, bitter old man who spent every waking moment hating Jews and blacks would turn out to be an abusive homicidal alcoholic?
19 | transient Wed, Jun 10, 2009 1:43:05pm |
Don't know if anyone's mentioned this yet.
Everyone is reporting that von Brunn was born in 1920 and it is therefore assumed he is 89 years old, but no one has actually released his birthdate. Depending on the month of his birth, he might still be 88. Since this is apparently a significant number for him, perhaps he decided to go out in blaze of HH.
I tried googling for his name and "born" and only got an artist link which says (on the search page) that his birthdate is 7/11/20 in St. Louis MO, and that he has a studio in the state of Maryland (convenient to DC, eh?) If this is the same guy (how many James W. von Brunn's are there?) this would support my hypothesis.

He double-parked his screaming red Toyota directly outside the front doors of the museum - he then started shooting in the doorway, and he apparently fell outside, according to witnesses. Therefore, it would seem it was just a few seconds from car to shooting to his being shot down by the other guards.

If transient, at 19 above, is correct--that von Brunn hoped to go out in a blaze of "88" glory--then there would be a certain poetry to his lingering at least until he hit the age of 89 and that was no longer possible. It would be the white-supremacist equivalent to a jihadist losing out on his 72 raisins.
The quote about him wanting to "die with his boots on" and "take others with him" does support the idea that he was suicidal.
Think about it.
He could have tried to shoot up a synagogue, but instead he took a shot at an armed security guard.

Threw it in his trunk, the back seat of his car, or (heck) on the gun rack in his pickup truck.
Then took it out, perhaps covered with something to conceal it, perhaps not, took it into the museum entrance, and started shooting.

Well, it WAS stopped, actually.
The shooter himself was disabled fairly quickly, and he didn't get a chance to hurt any third parties.
Can you imagine what might have happened if the security guards weren't armed themselves?
I think what you mean to say is that its impossible to PREVENT an attack like this, and you're right.
If an armed suicidal person wants to kill a random person, then you're not going to be able to prevent them.

That is a truly frightening thought.
Just got off the phone with my daughter, an employee of the District Attorney's office. She was doing presentations at a Jewish Center in the L.A. area all morning. She said that the security there was unbelievable when she arrived. They searched her and even scanned her county ID card. They refused to allow admittance to a Postal Inspector because she carries a gun. No wonder, after what happened today.

re: #99 Pvt Bin Jammin
That is a truly frightening thought.
Just got off the phone with my daughter, an employee of the District Attorney's office. She was doing presentations at a Jewish Center in the L.A. area all morning. She said that the security there was unbelievable when she arrived. They searched her and even scanned her county ID card. They refused to allow admittance to a Postal Inspector because she carries a gun. No wonder, after what happened today.
A Postal Inspector is a LEO. An armed guard saved unknown lives today. The gun is not the problem; it is the person wielding it that determines moral or immoral actions.

Just as odd was John Rabe; the Nazi party member who sheltered Chinese civilians from Imperial Japanase troops during the rape of Nanking.
I've never heard of him. How perfectly weird.
Sugihara basically went rogue, and in fact, his career suffered badly over it. Tokyo was not happy.

I was through the museum the summer it opened. Very crowded so everyone walked through single file. Half way through, I picked up that the lady ahead of me seemed to have first hand experience of the events. As we walked through the boxcar, she commented on how crowded it was when she rode in one. Then towards the end there is a very large photo on a wall, showing the tattoos the people were given at the camps. She rolled up her sleeve and held her arm up in front of the photo. The tatoo was identical (in font, location, number of digits) to the ones in the photo.

As far as I am concerned, the staff members of the Holocaust Museum are part of our family and the Museum itself is hallowed ground, and we pray for the recovery of the wounded guard. What's "grok"?
Grok - from Robert Heinlein's "Stranger in a Strange Land," about a human orphaned on Mars and raised by Martians who is taught many odd things by his mentors. Grokking - an ability to appreciate a thing or person in it's totality, in a very rough sense - is one of them. Commonly used as a substitute for "understanding" although that isn't quite right.
A good read.

Putting food on the table, taking care of my family, maybe setting some thing aside for a rainy day and having some fun in our free time. It takes too much time and effort to hate with this intensity. In the long run, it never does anything but cause misery for everyone involved.

That wasn't the point of #97 looking closely, as I understood it. It much rather referred to this comment: re: #19 transient
Only my five cents.

SWC Reaction to Murder of Security Guard at US Holocaust Memorial Museum
June 10, 2009
SWC REACTION TO MURDER OF SECURITY GUARD AT THE US HOLOCAUST MEMORIAL MUSEUM BY SELF-IDENTIFIED ANTI-SEMITE, WHITE SUPREMACIST, AND HATER OF AFRICAN-AMERICANS"The murderous attack that took place at the United States Holocaust Memorial Museum in Washington by James von Brunn, a self-identified anti-Semite, white supremacist, and hater of African-Americans shows that the cancer of hatred, bigotry and anti-Semitism is alive and well in America," said Rabbis Marvin Hier and Abraham Cooper, founder and dean and associate dean of the Simon Wiesenthal Center.
"The most astonishing fact is that the assailant, a captain in the US Navy who once fought against the 'Axis of Evil' in World War II, became an instrument of that evil," they added.
"It is deeply disturbing that one of America’s most powerful symbols of the memory of the Holocaust was selected as the site of the attack just days after President Obama accompanied Holocaust survivor Elie Wiesel to the Buchenwald death camp," concluded Hier and Cooper who are currently meeting with Arab leaders in the Gulf region.
James von Brunn, the alleged 89-year old shooter’s racist and anti-Semitic sentiments have been tracked by Simon Wiesenthal Center researchers. Some selections from various websites are shown below, click on images to enlarge.

In Texas, I can tell you that more and more people are getting turned on to creationism via "Expelled"... haven't noticed a corresponding rise in other forms of magic-think, though.
I think there has been an increase in this sort of thing in the UK, mainly because it fits an anti-American agenda. I think one reason is that 'converts' have religious-like convictions about this stuff and tend to run around spouting their crap at every opportunity they get, whereas sensible people just react with "Oh God...not this again..." and walk away. So the pro-idiocy arguments get a lot more 'airtime', so to speak.

I'm think police snipers occasionally go for the head shot. They're often dealing with hostage situations and need to ensure a one shot kill.
Also when the SEALS took down the three pirates weren't those all reported as headshots? But again, that would be a situation involving highly trained shooters and an absolute need for guaranteed kills.

Amazing how the subtlety of language is used to undermine our freedoms. The media is going to brazenly milk this story for everything it's worth while the murder of two unarmed soldiers at an Army recruiting office has already disappeared down the memory hole and it happened only a week ago. Can anyone here remember the name of the perp that committed the act? And will anyone ever forget the name of this new "right wing extremist"? We have armed Sheriff's deputies directing traffic outside, there are also several inside, plus at least one armed man in plain clothes (his firearm is CONSTANTLY "printing", and he wears a wired earpiece).
This is a Southern Baptist church, and all this has been there for several years. But you're right ... in my childhood, no such things were even considered, except the traffic cops.
Damn... We had none of this, growing up Catholic. I assume it's because our parish church was protected by the Mafia.

Iran's Islamic guardians warn reformist wave
TEHRAN, Iran (AP) — In the final hours of Iran's fierce election campaign, the top pro-reform challenger to President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad got a sharp warning Wednesday that authorities would crush any attempt at a popular "revolution" inspired by the huge rallies and street parties calling for more freedoms.
The threat by an official of the powerful Revolutionary Guard reflected the increasingly tense atmosphere surrounding Friday's up-for-grabs election. It also marked a sharp escalation by the ruling clerics against the youth-driven campaign of Mir Hossein Mousavi and its hopes of an underdog victory.

The Obama Administration has opened a new front in it's attack against Israel today. From the State Department briefing:
QUESTION: George Mitchell yesterday, using the phrase “Jewish state,” he said, “Palestinian state living in peace side-by-side with Jewish state.” Was that a slip of the tongue, or does the word “Jewish” signal a new departure for the Obama Administration in dealing with Israel-Palestine? And that being what it is, as he said it, what does it mean as far as the Obama Administration is concerned for Palestinians living inside Israel?
MR. KELLY: Well, Secretary Clinton said in March during her meeting with Foreign Minister Livni that both she and President Obama are committed to Israel’s security and to its democracy as a Jewish state. What Senator Mitchell said is not – does not represent any kind of new policy. We believe that Israel is a pluralistic democracy that guarantees the rights of all its citizens, Jewish and non-Jewish alike.
As the President has said, we’re going to do everything that we can to be constructive, effective partners in this process. And the President has reiterated to Prime Minister Netanyahu that the framework of the Roadmap can advance the interests of Israel, the Palestinian people, and the United States. And our position remains that the question of Palestinian refugees is one to be decided between the parties of the permanent status negotiations.
QUESTION: But on the issue of Arab Israelis, you’re saying that their rights as Israeli citizens are guaranteed on an equal footing with their Jewish counterparts.
MR. KELLY: Right.
QUESTION: Arab Israelis say that precisely, they’re not treated as their Jewish counterparts; they’re treated as second class citizens. Now within that appellation that both Clinton and Mitchell are talking about when they refer to the Jewish state, what is the angle on those rights, the rights of Israeli – Arab Israelis within a final settlement?
MR. KELLY: Well, as I said before, we believe that Israel is a pluralistic democracy, and its citizens, both Jewish and non-Jewish, enjoy the same full rights as citizens.
Yes.

One of the critiques of the commando rescue at Ma'alot in Israel in '74 was that the sniper went for the chest shot which hit, but did not incapacitate, the terrorist target. 22 victims died.

There are a few inconsistencies:
Gang related crime fits neither left nor right.
Capitalism is not an economic difference.

I see it as paranoia. The left isn't going to do anything drastic on gun rights, the recognize they will be back out of power if they attempt it. If the right could give up some of our pet social issues before next election then we might be able to get closer to some parity of power rather than lose more ground.
I disagree with your position that gun rights are a "pet social issue". I do agree that the Dems will hold off until after 2010.

Editorial boards don't blink twice at churches burning and it is journalistic suicide to metion "Obama" and "Kenya" in the same breath.
The Tribune endorsed Obama in the General Election.
In the past they have derided Raiila Odinga. Their attitude now seems odd.
I guess since the editorial is so positive, I don't know why they wouln't mention Obama.

I found this, but not the chart I was looking for. Still looking....The chart I saw had a much higher incidence of dementia in men compared to women the same age.
There are more than 100 conditions that cause dementia. 1 •The average rate of moderate to severe dementia amongst Australians is about one in fifteen aged 65+. Among people aged 80 to 84 the rate is one in nine, and amongthose aged 85+ it is one in four.

re: #324 Eowyn2
There are a few inconsistencies:
Gang related crime fits neither left nor right.
Capitalism is not an economic difference. What you are inadvertantly saying is that left-wingers tend to be motivated by poverty and right-wingers by hatred. I will call bullshit on that.
The Unibomber was left-wing. He only lived in poverty by choice. He was mad as a hatter. This killer was motivated by race/religion (I'm sorry if it offends my Jewish cohorts on this but I just can't consider Judism a race.) His rantings prove that he too, is mad as a hatter.
Murder is committed by people who are greedy, jealous, and/or hateful.
I think you're reading a little too much into the generality I presented. And by capitalism I meant the left-wing is usually anti-capitalist.
I don't know much about the Unabomer except he was anti-technology.

The tropical Pacific island nation of Palau said on Wednesday that it had agreed to temporarily take in 17 Chinese Muslims held at the US detention center in Guantanamo Bay.
Palau's government said it would accept the detainees, known as Uighurs, both as a humanitarian gesture and to help President Barack Obama fulfill his promise to close the controversial prison for foreign terrorism suspects on the US Naval base in Cuba. (Reuters)

North Korea Deserves the Diplomacy of Silence
By EDWARD N. LUTTWAK
In recent weeks, North Korea has detonated a nuclear bomb and violated U.N. Security Council prohibitions by launching ballistic missiles. It has threatened war against South Korea, repudiating the July 1953 armistice agreement and thus ostensibly reverting to a state of war with the United States. It has also sentenced two American journalists -- Euna Lee and Laura Ling -- to 12 years in a labor camp.
These are extreme provocations. Only a military attack could exceed them. Our response, of course, must be diplomatic. But only a very special kind of diplomacy can yield positive results: a diplomacy of silence.
Under it, no communications whatever would be sent to the North Korean regime, there would be no informal dialogues with any North Korean diplomats anywhere, and, above all, no attempt would be made to renew negotiations in any format.

48 hour rule on this one for sure.
The Obama Justice Department has quietly ordered FBI agents to read Miranda rights to high value detainees captured and held at U.S. detention facilities in Afghanistan, according a senior Republican on the House Intelligence Committee. “The administration has decided to change the focus to law enforcement. Here’s the problem. You have foreign fighters who are targeting US troops today – foreign fighters who go to another country to kill Americans. We capture them…and they’re reading them their rights – Mirandizing these foreign fighters,” says Representative Mike Rogers, who recently met with military, intelligence and law enforcement officials on a fact-finding trip to Afghanistan.

There are a few names that have become very popular in the black community while almost dying out among whites. My dad had one of those names (not Tyrone).

473 | Pawn of the Oppressor Wed, Jun 10, 2009 3:20:57pm |
re: #400 SanFranciscoZionist
Totally OT, and meaning no disrespect to Officer Johns--why is "Tyrone" such a distinctly black name? I've always wondered.
I can't say. It just is. I know that some segments of black culture flat-out make up names that "sound" African out of thin air, and of course a lot of black people with Carribean roots have African names which were eventually expressed into English and/or French. Sometimes a name just ends up being "a black person's name" somehow. There are probably entire college courses dedicated to studying that kind of thing, too.
My first name is an example. I've been told flat-out by several black people on different occasions that "You're the first white person I've ever met with that name". I find that interesting since I'm the whitest guy alive, and my parents had very, very white Protestant European reasons for giving me the name they did. I had no idea it was a "black" name until several folks of color told me.
Language, naming, and culture can be funny sometimes.

Forbes Mag says that the gunman had tried to take Paul Volcker Hostage
"A man complaining of the high interest rates and inflation threatened to take members of the Federal Reserve Board hostage today but was arrested without any shots being fired." The UPI article identified the weapon as a 38 caliber pistol. An abstract of a New York Times article from that day says that van Brunn was "disarmed after waving gun at security guard in Federal Reserve building in Washington."According to the Factiva news database, there was no further mainstream press coverage of von Brunn's attempt on the Federal Reserve, the charges that were brought against him or his trial. According to the Bureau of Prisons Inmate Locator, he was held in Federal Prison until Sept. 15, 1989.

And, it draws attention to her thighs and her butt.
Speaking of which...
But what really thrills me, what really feels liberating in a very personal way, is the official new prominence of Michelle Obama. Barack's better half not only has stature but is statuesque. She has coruscating intelligence, beauty, style and -- drumroll, please -- a butt. Yes, you read that right: I'm going to talk about the first lady's butt.
...Michelle strode onto more stages and people started focusing on her clothes and presence instead of her patriotism, it dawned on me -- good God, she has a butt! "Obama’s baby (mama) got back," wrote one feminist blogger. "OMG, her butt is humongous!" went a typical comment on one African-American online forum, and while it isn't humongous, per se, it is a solid, round, black, class-A boo-tay. Try as Michelle might to cover it with those Mamie Eisenhower skirts and sheath dresses meant to reassure mainstream voters, the butt would not be denied.

He says he "cased" the building twice, getting to know a security guard. His goal was to tie up then-Federal Reserve Board Chairman Paul Volcker and get on television. When he made his attempt, the guard he had gotten to know stopped and disarmed him. von Brunn says that he later refused plea bargains, hoping to get his trial televised. After he was convicted, the Navy veteran and former Mensa member wrote to the Secretary of the Navy for help in earning a presidential pardon, which never came to light.

If you are convicted and given the death penalty in Federal Court you don't get a Californiaesque 800 appeals and 27 years to write children's books about how you changed.
McVeigh was convicted in 1997 and the sentence was carried out in 2001. It's possible this guy would live to face it if he's convicted and sentenced to death.
Wrong.
The reason McVeigh was executed so quickly is because he waived his right to appeals, and asked to have his sentence carried out.
Had he not done that, I absolutely guarantee you that he'd still be sitting in a cell breathing at taxpayers' expense today.

Huh, that sounds really interesting. It makes sense in an abstract way; the names we have (and give our children) are markers of socio-economic status and often serve as aspirational markers as well-- children are given names that reflect the class that their parents want them to belong to. Names are also ways of transmitting cultural status markers.
Sounds very interesting!

Yup, his anti-fed "activism" meant that it was an easy guess that he was a Paulian so that meant he might have been into the Tea Party thing. I didn't find anything.
Also interesting when the markers don't cross over. My English friends think of "Chelsea" as a hard-core white-trash name, and couldn't understand why the Clintons chose it. To me, it shouts "child of yuppies".

Not to put words in Kilgore's mouth, but I don't think he's making such a comparison. The problem here is quite real. Any associations between whackjobs like this guy, Roeder or others with the Tea Parties or any other GOP-associated event is going to be trumpeted from the rooftops by the Dems, just as surely as the Republicans would quickly move to claim Cindy Sheehan is the heart and sole of the Democratic party. It's in the GOP's best interest to recognize this potential threat and get out in front of it by denouncing these assholes in no uncertain terms. I guess another point is that our socioeconomic classes and cultural markers here are so diverse... did your English friends consider it white trash, per se? The answer, of course, is that the GOP does no such thing. So there's nothing to gain by acting as though they do, you know?

Wrong.
The reason McVeigh was executed so quickly is because he waived his right to appeals, and asked to have his sentence carried out.
Had he not done that, I absolutely guarantee you that he'd still be sitting in a cell breathing at taxpayers' expense today.
Here's the last 3 federal executions. Last one before these was in 1963:
Juan Raul Garza Convicted 1993, appealed, executed in 2001
Louis Jones Jr. Convicted 1995, appealed, executed 2003
Timothy McVeigh Convicted 1997, dropped appeal, executed in 2001
The ones that went through the appeals process sat on Federal Death Row for 8 years. McVeigh would not still be rotting in prison.

I just want to point out that, in Israel, the security guards who sit at the entrances to restaurants, malls, museums, etc. are often the first and sometimes the only casualties of terrorist attacks. I've always tried to remember to say "thank you" before passing through because I know they may be putting themselves on the line at any minute to protect me.

I am fairly sure that the name of the guard indicates that he was black.
Interestingly in the video of the ambulance removing one of the injured, 4 of the 5 workers were black.
How ironic, the shooter's life may have been saved by the very people he hated.
In a previous comment I noted that the security guard at a synagogue in NYC was black and protecting the mothers and children inside who had parked their strollers outside

Names of Biblical prophets and patriarchs?
When I was doing genealogy, over in the West Midlands around the early 1800s, I ran into a lot of Josephs, Elijahs, Isaiahs and the like. We do see those names nowadays but, not so much from anyone over the age of 20.
