Tech Note: New Category Popup

Another new Ajax feature: the top level category for each LGF article (which appears on the second line of the title, to the left of the date and time of publication) is now an Ajax popup link, showing the most recent 5 articles in that category.

As with the Ajax tag popups, category popups behave differently depending if you’re at the LGF front page or an individual page for an article.

On the front page, the popup list shows the most recent 5 articles, excluding the current one.

On an individual article page, the popup list shows the 5 articles earlier than the current one.

OT This administration has quietly expanded Miranda rights to foreign terrorists on foreign soil.

“The administration has decided to change the focus to law enforcement. Here’s the problem. You have foreign fighters who are targeting US troops today – foreign fighters who go to another country to kill Americans. We capture them…and they’re reading them their rights – Mirandizing these foreign fighters,” says Representative Mike Rogers, who recently met with military, intelligence and law enforcement officials on a fact-finding trip to Afghanistan.

Rogers, a former FBI special agent and U.S. Army officer, says the Obama administration has not briefed Congress on the new policy. “I was a little surprised to find it taking place when I showed up because we hadn’t been briefed on it, I didn’t know about it. We’re still trying to get to the bottom of it, but it is clearly a part of this new global justice initiative.”

Why am I not surprised.

Operation Iraqi Children

Gary Sinise and Hillenbrand created OIC to give concerned Americans a way to reach out to war-stricken Iraqi children and support American troops in their efforts to assist them. Since its inception, OIC has delivered to Iraq over 200,000 school supply kits, along with more than half a million toys and thousands of Arabic-language books, shoes, blankets, backpacks and sets of sports equipment, all of which have been distributed to Iraqi children by our troops.

Mike Rogers, a Republican congressman and former FBI/other intelligence service officer, said he witnessed it (Mirandization) while at Baghram AFB in Afghanistan. On with Brent Baer's show tonight on Fox between 6 & 7 pm EST.

Weekly Standard's young bearded guy on Brent Baer's panel said SOME FBI are doing this already, perhaps since July 2008, taking away from CIA's jurisdiction. I think, don't quote me.

Letterman responds to Palin flap:

Taping tonight's episode of The Late Show, David Letterman took a few minutes to respond to Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin, who called him "pathetic" in a radio interview after he made her and her family the butt of a recent Top 10 list. The late-night host had drawn particular fire from Palin and some pundits for a joke about one of Palin's daughters being impregnated by New York Yankees star Alex Rodriguez during a trip to Yankee Stadium. Camp Palin apparently took the joke to be a crack against Palin's 14-year-old daughter Willow, who had recently attended a Yankees game, but Letterman insisted today that the real target was 18-year-old daughter Bristol.

“We were, as we often do, making jokes about people in the news and we made some jokes about Sarah Palin and her daughter [Bristol]... and now they’re upset with me…” Letterman says on tonight's show. "These are not jokes made about her 14-year-old daughter. I would never, never make jokes about raping or having sex of any description with a 14-year-old girl... Am I guilty of poor taste? Yes. Did I suggest that it was okay for her 14-year-old daughter to be having promiscuous sex? No." Saying he hopes he's "cleared part of this up," Letterman extended an invitation to Palin to come on the show as a guest.

U.S. Lawmaker Says Obama Administration Ordered FBI to Read Rights to Detainees

A senior Republican on the House Intelligence Committee is accusing the Obama administration of quietly ordering the FBI to start reading Miranda rights to suspected terrorists at U.S. military detention facilities in Afghanistan.

The move is reportedly creating chaos in the field among the CIA, FBI and military personnel, according to Rep. Mike Rogers, R-Mich. The soldiers, especially, he says, are frustrated that giving high value detainees Miranda rights -- the right to remain silent, the right to an attorney -- is impeding their ability to pursue intelligence on the battlefield, according to a story first reported by the Weekly Standard.

"What I found was lots of confusion and very frustrated people on the front lines who are trying to, well, make Afghanistan successful for the United States and its allies," said Rogers, who serves on the House Intelligence Committee.

Rogers, a former FBI special agent who served in the U.S. Army, just returned from Afghanistan and a visit to Bagram Air Base, where he said the rights are being read.

Apply the 24-hour rule, but I see no reason why he would not know what he's talking about.

You're actually still obsessing with him putting his feet on the desk, does that not strike you as a bit petty ?

Here's what bothered me about the picture. Obama is on the phone with Netanyahu, the leader of a country that is imperiled. Any conversation that Bibi has with the Prez is probably extremely important to the Israeli leader. I picture Bibi on the other end of the phone with a furrowed brow and many worries on his mind, not only about his country but also his relationship with the US leader. And as a concerned Netanyahu sits in Israel trying to have a serious discussion with Obama, the US leader assumes the casual body language of a man on the phone with a pesky telemarketer that he can't wait to hang up on. The feet on the desk aspect is the least of it to me.

Portland OR has an ongoing scandal with it's new Mayor, it's taken an even more bizarre turn.

Exhibit in Mayor Sam Adams’ Office Focuses on Youth

As most Portlanders know, Adams is now awaiting the result of an Attorney General’s investigation into his 2005 sexual relationship with then-teenage legislative intern Beau Breedlove. At the risk of understatement, that relationship has cast a pall over Adams’ mayoral term, which began in January.

All of which makes Adams’ decision to house a photo exhibition (PDF) titled “Focus on Youth” in his office all the more puzzling.

U.S. Lawmaker Says Obama Administration Ordered FBI to Read Rights to Detainees

Apply the 24-hour rule, but I see no reason why he would not know what he's talking about.

Gibbs was unaware of it at the press conference when Fox asked:

Q Robert, something completely different. Mike Rogers is a member of Congress, Republican from Michigan, has come back from Afghanistan and he tells our network that while he was there he witnessed U.S. military personnel reading Miranda rights to high-value detainees at Bagram detention facility in Afghanistan. He said this -- was informed by the military there that this is a common practice now to, upon their capture of these high-value targets, read them the Miranda rights. And he considers this a significant policy change, one that suggests to him, at least, that the administration has changed the orientation in Afghanistan from war fighting to law enforcement with this use of Miranda rights read to detainees. Would you care to comment on any of those observations?

MR. GIBBS: I think I'd need a little bit more information.

Q Do you know if that's true or untrue, that the Miranda rights are read?

MR. GIBBS: I have no reason to disbelieve a member of Congress, but I don't know any of the circumstances that are involved around it.

Q Would it come as a surprise to the White House that that's what would be happening?

MR. GIBBS: It's not a surprise to me, but again, I think I'd need a little bit more information to begin to surmise some of what the Congressman has -- I don't know if he spoke with commanders on the ground, I don't know if he saw General McChrystal or --

Q In general does the White House think that's a good idea?

MR. GIBBS: Major, let me get a little bit -- I'm happy to look at whatever longer-form information and get someone at NSC also to look at it. I hate to speculate on four sentences off of a report.

Q Okay. Just so I understand what you're saying, when you said it wouldn't come as a surprise to you, what did you mean by that?

MR. GIBBS: I'm not surprised by a lot in this town anymore. Let me look at what you're talking about --
Q You're not contesting that that's a policy that's being used? I'm just trying to make sure I understand what you're saying.

MR. GIBBS: I feel like you should be reading me my rights. (Laughter.) That's why I'm hoping to get my lawyer.

Again, I'm happy to look at whatever you have and try to give you an informed opinion based on somebody who's got greater jurisdiction over detainees at Bagram. That's outside of my portfolio.

Yes, but prior to Shaighai Ed's posting of the Bush photo, the comments very strongly suggested that putting one's feet on the desk was in and of itself a bad act. I think the Bush photo caught everyone by surprise. I'd hate to be in the position of the Bush defenders on this one.

Plus, the HIC member's statement and Gibbs' statement aren't necessary exclusive. It could be that it is occurring, and no one's let Gibbs know that it is happening.

It seems to me that with President Obama's election that there has been an ungluing of some of the more fringe elements amongst the "conservatives."

The unwillingness of the Ed. Morrisey's of this world to accept, write about, and rebuke the "extreme" elements of right-wing individuals, groups, and movements is clear from his and other blogs.

And when someone, like CJ, shines the light into those dark corners all of a sudden the self declared "conservatives" become highly defensive.

There was a very interesting and (imo) informative debate tonight on the Campbell Brown program (CNN). She had on a number of quests from a wide-range of political orientation and she asked the question (not quoting, this is from memory) -- "Which poses the graver threat, al-Qaeda or right-wing extremists?" (most concluded that al-Qaeda still poses the graver danger, but extremists should, obviously, not be ignored. but, also as some noted, it also comes down to resources, and finite, limited resources, and where/how these resources should be allocated. I think it would be a serious mistake to have counter-intelligence, police, etc., concentrate too much on "nut bars" or deranged psychopaths...) (also, somewhat off topic, i also really appreciate Campbell Brown's efforts -- when she has on dueling panelists -- to encourage them to reach "common ground", or to at least encourage them to see some area of commonality or reach a small area of agreement -- as opposed to the (mindless) re-hashing of extreme positions..)

If you say so. I have seen very little of it, but I have noticed many rushing to pin it on as many "conservatives' as they can.

I, for one, held no such sign and wore no such button. But the rush to the clarion call of battle is so heady for some that they see nothing but enemies and "examples". Puffery.

It's certainly happened before that conservatives have been smeared as 'extremists', but in the furor over the DHS report we've seen people on the right proudly labelling themselves as 'right wing extremists' -- when they're not denying outright that any extremists exist.
(I don't mean you, obviously!)

Take a group of people who are politically conscious, add Internet access and anonymity, and elect the other party’s guy president and voila: You’ve got a perfect petri dish in which to grow your very own nutroots culture. And no, before people start whining, of course I’m not saying that everyone who fits those criteria is nutroots. Just that we’re seeing a strain of paranoia in some righty blog comments since The One took office that was formerly relegated to lefty assertions about how the Bushitler would cancel the elections and declare himself king or whatever.[Link: hotair.com...]

re: #328 OldLineTexan

Oh, my apologies for providing you an "example". I am not "defending" any of these people ... I was remarking on the dropping of the "extremist" tag.

I was trying to be generous.

Being "extreme": if you put one lump of sugar in your tea, and your friend puts two lumps in theirs, they are doing an "extreme" variant of your action.

Do you really want those, like the shooter today, to be merely labeled as an extra-helping of what you believe?

"fringe" from my online dictionary"

the unconventional, extreme, or marginal wing of a group or sphere of activity

"Extreme" has many postive connotations, as is eXtreme sports.

Wouldn't you rather the shooter today to be known as a fringe element of society, and not someone who believes what you do except that he took those beliefs to the extreme?

Off the pedantry and back to the main point: the unwillingness of far too many self declared "conservatives" in the blogosphere and politics to address the fringe elements that hang on, and in some cases attempt to lead, the movement is striking.

It is one reason why I so easily caught tfk shilling for a Truther the other day (in regards to a Tea Party): like many "conservatives", tfk just didn't give a damn (to investigate) as long as he could get his Hate-On going.

I admitted Bush was "smug" to have put his shoe-clad feet on the White House desk during his first year in office. I also hypothesized that after 9/11/01, Bush was humbled and un-smugged and probably worked his butt off in that office, instead of hot dogging.

In situations such as these, I ask myself whether I'd be pissed off if Bush did the same. If I wouldn't, I give Obama a pass for what my opinion matters. Likewise, if it is a supposedly good thing that Obama has done, I ask myself if I'd be excited if Bush did the same. Being human and inevitably biased, my little exercise isn't perfect, but it kept me from hating Bush too much or on the other hand, believing Obama to be the Messiah.

I do it with the manufactured outrage du jour on the right and left as well; is today's 'scandal' or 'outrage' or 'offense' one that would bother me no matter who it affected?

Thanks for the lecture.

I would not dare insist on required terminology.

If you wish to mount a campaign to replace "extremist" with "fringe", be my guest. Be prepared to elicit some confused responses as you hone and focus the language.

Unfortunately, I see precious little difference in the terms. Because I am NOT a supporter of certain causes, today's political techniques dictate that I be tarred and feathered with as many "fringe" groups as possible. Were they"extremist", it would not matter. The key word, the part to be retained in the reader's mind, is "right-wing". The rest is a sabot, discarded on impact.

I am ill-pleased to report that the process is going swimmingly, and Newspeak is gaining ground daily.

Don't you wish there was a way to do a blind "taste test" of political news briefs? Give people a news item about a president's action/comment/mannerism/lunch menu, etc. without naming the president, and let them judge if the behavior is noble or outrageous...then show them their score as to Bush/Obama.

Unfortunately, those of us here follow the news so closely we're disqualified. Would be educational, I think, for people of all persuasions to see how strongly their views are guided by preconceptions.

re: #389 Flyers1974

That would be a very informative test, for all of us. I think Flyers is probably right that there would always be bias because people already have their minds made up as to who is right and who is wrong.

I'd add to that only that there's another problem of information overload. It becomes easy for any of us to rely on certain sources and to some extent we all have to, because there are so many sources out there and we don't all have time to check up on every last point. So the filters we acquire work in two ways: 1) to limit the information coming in, and 2) to skew us unavoidably in one direction or another. This is so however we try to correct for bias.

We can make a start on that correction by reading lots of different sources of info and trying to check up on original sources and claims made as much as possible, but it's impossible to completely remove bias no matter how hard we try.

And the vast majority of folks aren't trying that hard anyway. Everyone who comments here (or indeed anywhere in the blogosphere) is already more engaged than the average American and thus not representative. Most folks get their opinions from the TV, or maybe a paper, or most of all just from their peer group--what the people around them think. I think it's easy for people who are engaged in the political blogosphere to forget that we're not typical.

Regarding those on here being more engaged than the average: on some post today, a guy was critisizing a liberal acquaintence for the foolishness of stating the desire to see Iran's Ahmadinejad gone. I had to wonder, what percentage of Americans, liberal or conservative or other, could identify which country Ahmad... belonged to, let alone state any opinion about him, whether foolish or not.

398 Millicent Islam  Wed, Jun 10, 2009 7:37:57pm

re: #397 Flyers1974

Absolutely. I'd make two points: 1) the denizens of the political blogosphere as a whole are necessarily more engaged (if not always more informed) than the average American, simply by virtue of caring enough to be reading/commenting; and 2) as to this blog specifically, I'm uniformly impressed with the high level of discourse and knowledge here -- much higher than anywhere else.

I mostly hang out in the progressive blogosphere, and I wish more people there read LGF. They'd be very pleasantly surprised and they'd learn a lot. I certainly learn a lot from many people here, anyway, and it's much more interesting to be in a place that isn't an echo chamber.
