I remember a reviewer said the following about the movie "Taken" (which I freakin' loved!). One of my very, very favorite movie review lines ever!

"This is not a movie about moral dilemmas-it's about a father who will rip out your eyeballs if you don't give him his daughter back."

Speaking of movie morons, actor Craig T. Nelson was just on Hannity saying he's "mad as hell and not going to take it anymore", that he (a Californian) didn't realize he personally was going to be on the hook for the bailout money and Obama's plans, and how about withholding his tax payment to the IRS?

OT:
US long-term interest rates hit high

US long-term interest rates rose to the highest level of the year on Wednesday, threatening the “green shoots” of recovery, after the latest sale of 10-year government debt met with a tepid response from inflation-wary investors.

Concerns about the growth of government borrowing forced the US Treasury to give investors in an auction of $19bn in 10-year notes a yield of 3.99 per cent – 4 basis points higher than the yield available before the auction. That constituted the biggest yield markup since a 10-year auction in May 2003, said Morgan Stanley. Yields on the 10-year note, the benchmark rate for US mortgages, hit a high of 4 per cent during the day, up from 3.6 per cent a week ago.

The 10 year bond rate was 2.5% in March. That is a 60% increase in 3 months.

No wonder the Chinese laughed in Tim Geithner's face.

Senators Want Homebuyer Tax Credit to Rise to $15,000

Lawmakers are pushing to revive legislation in the Senate that would almost double an $8,000 tax credit for first-time homebuyers and expand the program to all borrowers.

Senator Johnny Isakson, a Georgia Republican, introduced a bill today that would increase the tax credit to $15,000 and remove income and other restrictions on who can qualify, according to his spokeswoman, Sheridan Watson. The Treasury Department declined to comment on the proposal.

The legislation, co-sponsored by Senate Banking Committee Chairman Christopher Dodd, a Connecticut Democrat, would extend the homebuyer credit to multifamily properties used as the borrower’s primary residence. It would also eliminate income caps of $75,000 and $150,000 on individuals and couples seeking to claim the credit.

“The housing market continues to be a drag on the economy, John Castellani, president of the Washington-based Business Roundtable, said in a telephone interview today. “We believe that if we don’t stabilize this vital sector, we can’t turn the tide on the recession.”

But I thought Obama's program to rewrite mortgages was going to save the housing market?

I like to list the ten best movies I never saw. The Bourne Identity, Pulp Fiction, Big Lebowski, Braveheart, The Dark Knight, Goodfellas, Fight Club, Gladiator, Scarface, and Raging Bull. Not much of a movie buff here except for comedies.

Something is circulating in Washington about Bernanke, keep an eye out for developments. Bernanke may get grilled tomorrow about some emails that have emerged that could show that he coerced and pressured Lewis of B of A to buy Merrill Lynch at a bad price.

Bernanke e-mail claim in Merrill sale saga

Ken Lewis, chief executive of Bank of America, used the threat of invoking a “material adverse change” clause to break off his agreement to buy Merrill Lynch last December because he wanted to negotiate a lower price, Federal Reserve chairman Ben Bernanke claimed in an e-mail.

Mr Lewis, who is scheduled to testify about the matter on Thursday at a congressional hearing, only dropped his threat after being told by former US Treasury secretary Hank Paulson that regulators, including Mr Bernanke, would remove him and his board if BofA tried to invoke the “MAC” clause.

I'm hearing whispers that Obama wants Bernanke gone (cause he was originally a Bush appointee) and so would shed no tears for Bernanke going under the bus.

After the Fed initially refused to comply with the committee’s request for documents and e-mails in the matter, the committee took the extraordinary step of issuing a subpoena on Tuesday to obtain material from the Fed that concerned the deal.

One person familiar with the Fed’s history could remember only one previous occasion when it had been served with a subpoena.

The Financial Times has learned that Mr Bernanke, in an e-mail, described Mr Lewis’s threat to invoke the “MAC” clause as a “bargaining chip”, and a “foolish move”, before concluding that “the regulators will not condone it”.

A staffer at the Federal Reserve bank in Richmond, Virginia, said in an e-mail that top executives at BofA, including the bank’s chief financial officer, Joe Price, “want the transaction to go through but have to protect their shareholders”.

At the very least, Merrill Lynch stock holders now have a much better case in court and I think Bernanke will probably end up with his credibility hurt.

Worst case, Bernanke is gone.

OMAHA, Neb. (AP) — A Nebraska doctor says he'll perform third-term abortions in Kansas after the slaying of abortion provider George Tiller, even though Tiller's clinic is closed.

Dr. LeRoy Carhart declined to discuss details with The Associated Press on Wednesday, a day after Tiller's family announced his Wichita clinic was permanently shutting its doors.

Carhart isn't saying whether his plans include opening a new facility or offering the abortions at an existing practice. He says such details are "something that doesn't need to be talked about" until everything is in place.

Anybody who has lived in Chicago and seen how things "happen" here to people will be completely unsurprised by this story. Roland Burris just got very lucky.

Political consultant John Ruff dies in auto accident

SPRINGFIELD -- A key figure in the perjury investigation of U.S. Sen. Roland Burris died in an automobile accident Monday, authorities in far west-suburban Kendall County confirmed Tuesday.

John Ruff, of Sandwich, Ill., was killed shortly before 3 p.m. when his 2001 BMW convertible crossed an oncoming lane of traffic and collided with a tree while he was driving eastbound on Rogers Road near Oak Brook Road in unincorporated Plano, said Kendall County Sheriff's Deputy Richard Pearson.

Of course, it's a complete mystery how this guy ended up dead.

Police have ruled out alcohol as a cause of the crash, but toxicology results won't be known until a coroner's inquest in mid July.

Pearson said there were no witnesses to the crash nor was there evidence of any other vehicles involved. There were no skid marks on the road.

"We have absolutely no idea what caused Mr. Ruff's vehicle to veer off the roadway," Pearson said.

Now, why is Burris lucky?

Ruff, 42, was the subject of a March 6 front-page story in the Sun-Times in which he issued an apology for being a co-plaintiff with Burris in a lawsuit seeking to force Secretary of State Jesse White to certify Burris’ controversial late-December appointment by impeached ex-Gov. Blagojevich.

Ruff, a health-care and political consultant, raised the prospect of a possible quid pro quo between Blagojevich and Burris, recounting a telephone conversation with Burris’ business partner Fred Lebed, who allegedly told Ruff on the date of Burris' appointment, "We'll have to do some things for the governor."

It's amazing how these things happen in Chicago.

Pigs of terror!

Pipeline Inspection Gauge ‘PIG’ Cited As Terror Threat

A pig is a device used by pipe contractors to clean or detect weaknesses in pipelines used for oil and gas, water or sewage. The device gets its name not only because of the acronym for pipeline inspection gauge but because it makes a squealing sound while traveling through a pipeline. Pigs come in various sizes and can travel remotely at high speeds. Contractors routinely use pigs in maintaining their pipelines.
U.S. security experts believe terrorists are capable of using pigs to infiltrate the pipeline networks in the United States and create havoc and destruction.

Source is questionable.

45% Say Cancel Rest of Stimulus Spending

Forty-five percent (45%) of Americans say the rest of the new government spending authorized in the $787-billion economic stimulus plan should now be canceled. A new Rasmussen Reports national telephone survey found that just 36% disagree and 20% are not sure.

According to news reports, only $36 billion of the stimulus plan had been spent as of late May.

Just 20% of adults say the tax cuts included in the stimulus plan should be canceled while 55% disagree. The stimulus plan includes $288 billion in tax cuts.

While there is a wide partisan gap on the question of stimulus spending, there is little partisan disagreement on maintaining the tax cuts.

President Obama on Monday vowed to speed up the pace of stimulus spending and said the money will help “create or save” 600,000 more jobs this summer.

However, only 31% of Americans believe the new government spending in the stimulus package creates new jobs. Forty-eight percent (48%) say the stimulus spending does not create jobs, and 21% are not sure.

Americans have mixed feelings about whether speeding up the new government spending in the stimulus package will help the economy. Thirty-nine percent (39%) say the increased spending will be good for the economy, but 44% say it will be bad. Eight percent (8%) think it will have no impact.

A plurality of government employees believe speeding up the stimulus will be good for the economy. However, those who work in the private sector strongly disagree.

Of course, since the "stimulus" isn't doing any good, the prudent, fiscally responsible thing to do would be to cancel what's not spent already, especially since we couldn't afford it in the first place. The people can see right through this sham and the polls are showing it.

/but since TOTUS doesn't care about the people or fiscal responsibility, he just promised to spend it faster

Nearby Star May Be Getting Ready to Explode

Bye-bye, Betelgeuse?

The nearby, well-known and very bright star may soon explode in a supernova, according to data released by U.C. Berkeley researchers Tuesday.

The red giant Betelgeuse, once so large it would reach out to Jupiter's orbit if placed in our own solar system, has shrunk by 15 percent over the past decade in a half, although it's just as bright as it's ever been.

"To see this change is very striking," said retired Berkeley physics professor Charles Townes, who won the 1964 Nobel Prize for inventing the laser. "We will be watching it carefully over the next few years to see if it will keep contracting or will go back up in size."

Betelgeuse, whose name derives from Arabic, is easily visible in the constellation Orion. It gave Michael Keaton's character his name in the movie "Beetlejuice" and was the home system of Galactic President Zaphod Beeblebrox in "The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy."

45% Say Cancel Rest of Stimulus Spending

Of course, since the "stimulus" isn't doing any good, the prudent, fiscally responsible thing to do would be to cancel what's not spent already, especially since we couldn't afford it in the first place. The people can see right through this sham and the polls are showing it.

Eventually, the huge star may become a nesting doll of elements, with a mixed iron-nickel core surrounded by onion-like layers of silicon, oxygen, neon, carbon, helium and hydrogen.

As the iron fuel runs out, it may explode into a supernova, blasting newly created elements out into the universe and leaving behind a small, incredibly dense neutron star.

All the heavier elements in the universe — including all the oxygen, carbon and iron in your own body — were created in such a way.

It's possible we're observing the beginning of Betelgeuse's final collapse now.

If so, the star, which is 600 light-years away, will already have exploded — and we'll soon be in for a spectacular, and perfectly safe, interstellar fireworks show.

From your referenced site:
"Most earth scientists are convinced that global warming is a fact and that our human activity of burning fossil fuels is the main cause. We burn coal, oil, natural gas and other hydrocarbon resources which release huge amounts of heat trapping gases into the world's atmosphere. The resulting temperature rise increases hurricane storm intensity while at the same time reduces food production. The amount of fossil fuels is finite and humans and other animals may not survive if the earth's temperature continues to rise. So everything must be done to convert to some other energy system as soon as possible.

Surely, you forgot your /sarc tag on this one, right?

From the Wiki site:

A Betelgeuse supernova could easily outshine the Moon in the night sky.[19] It will likely be the brightest supernova in recorded Human history, easily outshining SN 1006. After it explodes, it will likely linger for several months, being visible in the daytime sky and lighting up nighttime skies in the Solar System for a long time, after which the "right shoulder" of Orion will disappear forever.

Reported on June 9, 2009, the star has shrunk 15% in the last 15 years. The rate that it has been decreasing in size has accelerated.[20]

I just got done teaching a bicycle maintenance class. One of the students is a customer of mine who spent the second or third largest amount on a single bicycle in my shop's 10 year history. He is also one of the very few customers I have who know that I am not a liberal (the rest just assume it.)

While he's finishing up on his bike, he starts telling me about a raft trip he just took with a group of other local folks down the Colorado, and what an interesting group it was, and how he thinks he was the only Creationist among them. If I hadn't been reading LGF, I wouldn't have known what he was talking about. But I did know. [Thanks, Charles.]

I think he was trying to gauge whether he had a sympathizer in me. I walked a careful line between telling him what I know and just letting him talk. He spoke straight from the talking points, except he agreed with me that Creationism does not belong in the classroom. I did OK, he's still my customer. He did say courtesy and respect are the most important things to him, and I think part of his motivation to talk about it tonight was that he didn't get that from one of our mutual acquaintances on his trip.

CORRECT! In fact it’s these vermin who contribute to the problems of Western nations as they’re now an economic drain. As to whom we want as neighbors, Nations have a right to maintain their cultural and ethnic identity. This means if we dont want to be infested with Muslims, who aren’t part of our culture, we have the right to exclude them. And if they prove they’re a threat, as they now have, we have the right and responsibility to take more “Extreme” measurers.

YES. TOMORROW BELONGS TO US!
That the BNP may be racist is of secondary importance to the more important issue; the greater threat to the world posed by the danger or Islam. There’s a Muslim saying, “Enemy of my enemy is my friend”: meaning sometimes strange alliances are necessary to achieve the more important objective and the greater good. The Western world is in an undeclared war with Islam. At stake is our very survival. So our most important objective for the security of the free world is the ultimate extermination of Muslims. So if we must, for the greater good, support political parties like the BNP or other neo-fascists to rid the world of dangerous vermin like Muslims, so be it. Desperate situations sometimes require desperate solutions. So YES. Tomorrow DOES belong to us; provided we find leaders with the courage to think the unthinkable.

The key was color vs black and white. The color scenes move the story forward, and the black and white scenes started at the end of the story and moved it backward toward the beginning. (I think I've got that right, but if it's reversed, no matter.) Just very, very, good film making!

It seems that she has been smiling there for quite some time. The woman is an anti-Semitic bitch and IMHO has no business appearing on a pro-Israel site.

re: #18 Jim in Virginia

Local Hero is always in my top ten list. Little known but wonderful movie with soundtrack by Knopfler.

Effin' a tweety! Roger that! Probably the best soundtrack EVER! (funny little thing; I used to record all my albums for playing in my company vehicle that only had a cassette deck (hell, CDs were still a year or two out then!). Apparently, when I dubbed LOCAL HERO to tape, when the final track ended (the anthemic "Going Home") I shouted "yee-AAAAAHHHH!" and the stylus/vinyl picked that exultation up while the stylus was tracking the run-out part of the LP; I always sorta wondered where that ghostly cheer came from... %) ) Still have the 12" extended vinyl version of GOING HOME around here somewheres...

The soundtrack to DAS BOOT, by Klaus Doldinger (from the fusion band Passport) is another major contemporary masterpiece that was out about the same time as LOCAL HERO.

Although there are some Tangerine Dream soundtracks that kick major @ss (SORCERER, THIEF, THE PARK IS MINE, FIRESTARTER, WAVELENGTH, THE MAN INSIDE, FLASHPOINT, HEARTBREAKERS, THE KEEP, NEAR DARK) and others that royally suck (SHY PEOPLE, DEAD SOLID PERFECT, THREE O'CLOCK HIGH, CATCH ME IF YOU CAN).

Yes, there was no light and shade or anything like that - just this monotously hysterical tone from start to finish. The final sequence was just evil torture porn. Oh yeah. And the earlier battle (where Natty first meets the sisters on the way to the fort) is wonderful as well. (And, IMHO, was kind of plagiarized in the early fight sequence in Mel Gibson's "The Patriot" - where he runs from tree to tree, etc.)

Instant chemistry with Madeleine Stowe! Whew!

re: #516 Jimmah

Yes, there was no light and shade or anything like that - just this monotously hysterical tone from start to finish. The final sequence was just evil torture porn. The cruelty and sadism of the film was not justified by the point it made about religion - not even close. Really wish I hadn't seen it.

Completely agree. And it seems to me that it didn't even have any point to make about religion - it was a lot of pretentious babble. I genuinely couldn't discern a coherent point.

And that's to say nothing about the sadism and cruelty of the final sequence, for which there was no justification -- nor was even the thinnest veneer of one given in the plot. And I've seen some pretty extreme French horror in particular, and I don't necessarily balk at all violence in movies. This was by far the worst example of violence/sadism/torture porn I've ever seen.

I genuinely wanted to curse the universe for the waste of two hours of my life that I would never get back.

Ok, just checking in before bedtime, thought I would throw my 2 cents in.....

4 Rooms
The Princess Bride
Serenity
Hidalgo
The Quiet Man
The Wind and the Lion
Mr. Smith Goes to Washington
All favorites of mine at the moment, subject to change without notice
(Not usually a fan of the stuff most people consider classics....)
Humble apologies for any repeats

Serenity is good, but you have to see the series to make it good, otherwise the characters don't make any sense.

No love for Red October? Alec Baldwin may be a moron, but I thought the movie was great!

You are not going to believe this, but I have seen nearly all the Tom Clancy movies EXCEPT Red October...and Sum of All Fears, which I refuse to watch because of Hollywood's politically correct butchery of the plot.

I think Patriot Games is still relevant, being about terrorism. It shows the IRA's connection to PLO type groups in the SAS scene in the desert, and Sean Bean was great as the IRA assassin.

I need to watch Red October someday when I am in a Cold War nostalgia mode.

Good evening y'all - I see we're talking about, among other things, actors in their best roles or best acting or something and I'm gonna nominate Val Kilmer for his portrayal of Doc Holliday in "Tombstone". The true history of the Wild West has always been a fascination of mine and my dad graduated from Tombstone High School, so that may have something to do with it!

Val Kilmer has been immensely underrated as a dramatic actor. Every time I see Top Gun, where they played together, I think all over again that in any just and sane world that awarded stardom on the basis of talent, Kilmer should have had Tom Cruise's career, and Tom Cruise should have had his.

Hey Hoops! Well Bonnie and Clyde the movie was not that close to reality. The real Clyde Barrow was a homocidal maniac - for real. Yet seeing the movie you'd think he was this bad boy gangster who was just misunderstood.

Yep. Two people trying to outdo each other in cynicism and destroying their souls in the process. And each one becoming aware of it after it's too late.

For me it was also a summation of yuppie culture.

Ahh, I hadn't made the connection with yuppie culture - I saw it long after it'd come out - but that makes perfect sense. It came out in the 80's didn't it? So there's a perfect analogy to be made with excess and decadence and consumerism...I'll certainly be thinking of that the next time I watch it now, thanks to you.

I seem to have some preference for movies that involve certain kinds of doom and self-destruction.

Oh yeah,

What Dreams May come.

Visually stunning and a really nice story.

I second that. I'm including it on my top ten, though I wish for a top 25.

The Man Who Would Be King
Taken
The Wizard of Oz
What Dreams May Come
Life is Beautiful
Dead Men Don't Wear Plaid
To Kill a Mockingbird
O Brother Where Art Thou
Shawshank Redemption
Burn After Reading

I really get a kick out of the Christopher Guest mocumentaries, like Waiting for Guffman and Best in Show, and might say that combined they add up to a fave.

I hate leaving off so many, like some mentioned earlier: Last of the Mohicans and Braveheart, to name a couple.

Jun. 9, 2009 09:57 AM
AP

LAKEMOOR, Ill. – The planters in Tina Asmus' front yard aren't too pleasing to some of her neighbors, and village officials in Lakemoor have told her to remove them, or face a fine. Asmus, who likes to recycle discarded items, created the planters out of two old toilets and a pedestal sink. Mayor Todd Weihoffen, who is a plumber by trade, said he stands behind police who have given Asmus 30 days to remove the toilets.

Especially for Nicolson's character's line, "You make me want to be a better man."

Of course my husband likes the exchange between the fawning fan of Nicolson's books who asks, "How do you write women so well?" He answers,
"I think of a man, and I take away reason and accountability."

So if it's a date movie you're wanting, don't laugh like a hyena at that line.

From everything I've read, Wyatt Earp had an ego the size of the continent and that did not help this situation. He thought he was always right no matter what. From everything I've read, Wyatt Earp had an ego the size of the continent and that did not help this situation. He thought he was always right no matter what. This situation was basically bad cops vs worse cop + semi-organized crime, but a morally ambiguous story doesn't make for good legends. The shoot out didn't even occur in the OK Corral either.

so what?...it's done now...he had nothing to do with the location and he was infinately right to take out the Clanton boys...they were hoods that were doomed from the start of the whole situation

Well actually Wyatt and Doc were arrested and stood trial for the murders of Billy Clanton, Frank McLowry and Bill McLowry - entire trial was covered by the Tombstone Epitath which is still published and you can buy a replica of the paper's coverage of the shoot out and the trial.

re: #875 albusteve

The point is that there's a big difference between reality and fantasy. A complex story about bad cops abusing their power combined with corruption at all levels of government and a nightmare of overlapping jurisdictions might make for an ok story now, but not before, which is why this story is almost always presented as a Black & White situation which it wasn't. Tombstone is the only movie about this event (other than the stupid Star Trek episode) I've seen that even hinted at Earp not being a saint.

That's all true of course. But Earp died in his bed in,
1929, was a lot of things - some good, some pretty bad, but also refereed the Tom Sharkey/Bob Fitzsimmons heavy weight title bout. Also a good friend of the real "Bat" Masterson, who went on to NYC, became a sports writer and ultimately Sports Editor of, iirc, The NY Daily Mirror.
The real Bat Masterson also knew the real Doc Holliday and said "he was a mean, nasty, scrawny son of a bitch and killed a lot of men. Course, I don't recall him ever killing someone who didn't need killing, either."

No! I hadn't noticed that!

It was certainly deserved. I did notice he had 5 of the bottom ranked comments though!

i still maintain that he was (mostly) trolling and deliberately trying to enrage. That's one reason i didn't even bother to downding him. I honestly would not be surprised to find out that he'd made a bet somewhere that he could wind up enraging everyone and owning control of the bottom ten comments.

I do also think he believed some of what he was saying though; he certainly picked the name AssHat well.

Costner and his film tells more of the man's story, flawed as it may be. I like both films for different reasons.

re: #913 ArchangelMichael
I understand that. The problem with judging or evaluating people from the days of the true Wild West is that there was such a mixture of good and bad all over the place! But the cowboys were indeed, Tombstone (and Cochise County's) version of the Hell's Angels. Killed a lot of innocent people. But hell, Tombstone was a silver town and just like other silver or gold towns attracted the good, the bad and the ugly! Miner's, hookers, bars, gamblers, gunmen, folks looking for a respectable life amid all of that. Just fascinating times.
BTW, you did know, of course, that Doc Holliday was in fact a dentist, trained in Georgia and went west for his health when he came down with TB. Scrawny as he was from his disease, he learned to defend himself with guns and knives. Some historians and psychologists have thought for years and years that Doc was actually looking for someone faster to put him out of his REAL PAIN from the TB, but his pride wouldn't let himself be beat. Wyatt Earp, who was a town Constatbile or somesuch when Wild Bill Hickock was at his zenith, and John Wesley Hardin was in his top form, still said that Doc was the nerviest, fastest and dealiest man with a six-shooter as I've ever met or known.
As I said, fascinating times and people.

Yes, he did. Loved that scene when the hitman with a shotgun in the Charger is tailing McQueen all over SF, and suddenly loses him........looks in the rearview mirror and there's McQueen in that 1968 BRG Mustang Hatchback, getting closer and closer to him. Great scene!

re: #920 FamHistoryGuy

Fair enough, he was no saint. He made many powerful enemies, but he was on the right side more frequently than on the wrong side. Another part of the Tombstone saga that never gets mentioned is the role romantic jealousy played in all the hostility. It was a real life soap opera of cheating and betrayal.

922 realwest  Wed, Jun 10, 2009 10:24:17pm

re: #921 MrPaulRevere
Yep, as I said somewhere up above, the true or at least perceived truths of the Wild West are complex indeed. Basic and frequently repetitive though they were (Texas cowboys round up "stray" longhorns and drive 'em to the nearest railhead (Ellsworth, Wichita, Abilene, Dodge City) worked their asses off 12 or more hours a day in the saddle, all of 'em mostly in their early 20's, get paid at the railhead and look to have a great time! Same story, over and over. Rustlers, pioneers, gamblers, drunks, whores, gunmen - some for hire (e.g., Tom Horn) most Sheriff's or "Marshall's" getting piece of the action in saloons and all. Rough, HARD and dirty times indeed.

Having been in the gun business for many years I cant begin to tell you the misconceptions regarding this time period. From the size and types of horses and mules that were really used to the true guns that really won the west. (Shotguns!). A time of hardships we cant even imagine. Dime novels from then became todays history, an unrealistic picture of the truth. Todays Biker has`nt the sand to compete in that world, they`d be trashed in a week.
