Bakery allegedly discards employee's severed arm
Jun. 11, 2009 09:59 AM

MADRID – A Spanish trade union is suing a bakery that allegedly threw the severed arm of an employee into a bin after it was amputated in an accident with a kneading machine. The Workers Commissions said in a statement Wednesday that Bolivian immigrant Franns Rilles lost his left arm in May 28 at the Rovira bakery in the eastern Valencia region.

Carradine family expert: David's death not a suicide
Jun. 11, 2009 01:23 PM
Associated Press
LOS ANGELES -- The forensics expert hired by David Carradine's family has concluded that the "Kung Fu" actor did not commit suicide, but said that more information was needed from Thai investigators before the cause of death could be determined.
Carradine's brothers, Keith and Robert Carradine, each read part of a prepared statement to reporters from The Associated Press at a Los Angeles hotel Thursday morning. In their first appearance since their older brother was found hanging in a Bangkok hotel room closet last week, they thanked supporters and asked for privacy.
"This is a devastating loss for our family and we greatly appreciate the compassion pouring in from all over the world," Keith Carradine said.
They also released a statement by Dr. Michael Baden of New York that indicated a second autopsy determined Carradine didn't kill himself.

Anne Frank museum to display her actual diaries
Jun. 11, 2009 12:24 PM
Associated Press
AMSTERDAM - The Anne Frank House museum says it will put the teenage Holocaust victim's diaries and other writings on permanent display to commemorate what would have been her 80th birthday on Friday.
Frank died in a concentration camp at 15.
Until now her posthumously published diaries and other works have been kept in an archive at the Netherlands Institute for War Documentation. Some have previously been displayed at the museum, which encompasses and preserves the "Secret Annex" - the tiny apartment above a canal-side warehouse where the Frank family hid for two years.
Education Minister Ronald Plasterk said it was important for the historical record that the writings be on display at the museum, "on the spot where they were written."
Frank was born June 12, 1929, and began keeping a diary in a red-and-white autograph book shortly before the family went into hiding in July 1942.
That book is on display at the museum now.

One evolutionary curiosity:
Many highly venomous animals are very visible and brightly colored, which serves the gene-passin'-on function of warning away predators. Think, e.g., coral snakes.
The stonefish is highly venomous, but highly camouflaged.

Gardening nudists claim landlord discrimination
Jun. 9, 2009 09:55 AM
AP
BOULDER, Colo. – A couple of nudists claim their landlord is wrongly discriminating by trying to get them to cover up while gardening. Robert and Catharine Pierce have been accused by their landlord of being a nuisance by gardening wearing only thong underwear, plus pasties for Catharine Pierce. Neighbors complained to police about the Pierces' scanty clothing. But police say the Pierces are not violating the law as long as their genitals are covered.
But their landlord, Boulder Housing Partners, has sent the Pierces a letter saying they could face eviction if they don't cover up. The Pierces say the threat of eviction amounts to discrimination.
"We want our freedom," said Robert Pierce, 58. "We want exactly what the law gives you, and we don't want to be harassed about it."

Quite nicely thank you, but you have to buy the pouch style. A women's thong won't work at all for that.

Gee. All I did was hit the front of the carport and scare my co-pilot (my daddy). Nothing even fell down.
My son allowed his younger sister, aged 14 or thereabouts, to start his manual transmission car to warm it up for him. She somehow managed to plow into the closed garage door, causing about $1,000 worth of damage. Amazingly, we thought it was pretty funny and weren't all that mad, but she gets very upset when we bring it up. She's now got a license and is doing just fine.

re: #86 Alaska Kim
How hot is it in Vegas?
Actual answer: It's about 85.
Smart aleck answers:
How to find the temperature in Las Vegas
It's so hot that . . .
the potatoes cook underground, and all you have to do to have lunch is to pull one out and add butter, salt and pepper.
farmers are feeding their chickens crushed ice to keep them from laying hard-boiled eggs.
the cows are giving evaporated milk.
the trees are whistling for the dogs.
you no longer associate bridges (or rivers) with water.
you can say 113 degrees without fainting.
you eat hot chilies to cool your mouth off.
you can make instant sun tea.
you learn that a seat belt makes a pretty good branding iron.
the temperature drops below 95, you feel a bit chilly.
you've experienced condensation on your butt from the hot water in the toilet bowl.
you would give anything to be able to splash cold water on your face.
you can attend any function wearing shorts and a tank top.
The 4 seasons are: tolerable, hot, really hot, and ARE YOU KIDDING ME?!
you discover that in July, it takes only 2 fingers to drive your car.
you discover that you can get a sunburn through your car window.
you notice the best parking place is determined by shade instead of distance.
hot water now comes out of both taps.
it's noon in July, kids are on summer vacation, and not one person is out on the streets.
you actually burn your hand opening the car door.
you break a sweat the instant you step outside at 7:30 a.m. before work.
no one would dream of putting vinyl upholstery in a car or not having air conditioning.
your biggest bicycle wreck fear is, "What if I get knocked out and end up lying on the pavement and cook to death?"
you realize that asphalt has a liquid state.

The instructor would sometimes shout out imaginary emergency situations & judge our responses. On my second day he hit me with "some one just crossed the double yellow & is heading right at us!"

Though the Obama administration proudly announced Thursday that it had freed and resettled four Guantanamo detainees in Bermuda, the British government is complaining that it was not adequately consulted on the deal.
And since Bermuda is a British territory, that means the prisoner transfer may not be permanent.
"The Bermudan government should have consulted us as to whether this falls into their competence. Foreign affairs and security issues would usually fall under U.K. government," one British official told FOX News, adding that they would pursue a security assessment. "It's unlikely any more (detainees) will go to any British overseas territories."

Dear Killgore and Avanti,
We are at war. The enemy is anyone who takes up arms in the name of Allah against us. We cannot imprison every person who declares Jihad on us. We have to use overwhelming force to intimidate or destroy threats to our nation. Perhaps you should read Willful Blindess, the investigation, arrest, trial, and outcome of the case against the Blind Sheikh. Millions of dollars spent to imprison a few Jihadis. Legal action is not going to win this war.
Sincerely,
NelsFree

Damn, but I really don't know what women want. I could break the pussy over my knee while field stripping an AK-47 blindfolded. What in the name of God attracts you to this wimp?
I never understood it watching my friends. I usually have a girlfriend, and have since I was 16. Relationships end, and you go on from there and all that. But many of my friends weren't like that (of course, their starter marriage has lasted, so this is not a glowing endorsement of how I've lived my life), and I never understood it. I just don't know what really gets a girl except for chrome. Chrome won't get you home, but it will get you laid.
I bought my Harley with that in mind, and (of course) got in a stable relationship that has lasted since shortly thereafter. I still have a cool bike, though :-)
This dude is all chrome and no engine, if you know what I mean.
(I didn't watch the show except peripherally. The Girlfriend likes shit like that. I'd just turn the TV off and play around here :-)
There, there, there. There, there, there again.
I realize it must be annoying to some guys that both men and women are throwing themselves at this fellow.
You might want to keep in mind that while he does kiss guys, he's a big fellow and not exactly skinny. Plus he has an incredible vocal range. Plus he's cute in guy liner and leather.

Breaking News: DHS Memo Rendered Irrelevant in Light of New Evidence from Stormfront......
Could the Von Brunn incident be another Mossad Op?
1) Timing: Congress is debating hate-crime legislation which israelis and jews are particularly interested in, due to their desire to destroy freedom of speech.
2) Location: The District of Criminals, close to congress' doorways, sending the clear message that the hate crime legislation is necessary for them to protect themselves, giving more weight to the zionists in congress' rants.
3) Target: The holohoax museum, which is the jew/israeli focus and that which they wish congress would focus on too. Obviously Von Brunn wasn't there to shoot a black armed guard, he must have been after jews. Fortunately, all the jews were unavailable for target practice.
4) Facts: Here is Von Brunn, supposedly a well trained white supremacist, who, without any real preparation, walks in off the street, carrying a rifle, and shoots and is shot by a security guard.
a) He wasn't challenged for the rifle.
b) He had no idea whether jews would be available to shoot.
c) There are 70 armed security guards (cameras?) and countless visitors, yet nobody saw anything.
d) Immediately, he is labeled by the media as a white, anti-semitic, supremacist, bent on making his own holocaust (a real one).Argument:
This is far too pat, it is too perfect, just like so many mossad false flag ops. It is timed to affect members of congress at a critical time in history, when they are debating limitations on free speech and thought. We may never know the truth, but I personally don't buy it. These are the same people who murdered JFK, Lincoln, and brought us 9/11. The same people who brought us into WWI & WWII, and who now seek WWIII and world domination. This legislation has no purpose but to limit criticism of their criminal acts and plans.
Someone please forward this to Fox News and Rush Limbaugh!

OK, I'm late to this thread. Was off work ill today. I'll be back there tomorrow. Not much to say, only concerned about extremists capitalizing on the Holocaust Museum shooting - that was just as terrible as the killing of Dr. Tiller. We don't agree with their actions/beliefs, but murder is always wrong! Very sad!
Meanwhile, I'm contemplating early retirement - my boss is retiring 7/1 and I can't see myself continuing without him. If they come up with something I can look forward to every day, OK - if not, I'm out of here - one way or the other. Plus side: I'd have more time to exchange ideas with you folks!

No one has had smallpox since the 70s, and troops are vaccinated for smallpox due to bioterrorism concerns. I don't see how that could be true. Maybe this is about troops who have a reaction to the virus vaccinia they are given.

This is not true. Smallpox has been eradicated. In fact, it's the only infectious disease that has ever been eradicated. The only remaining smallpox virions are kept in highly-guarded laboratories, for research purposes.
There have been concerns that one of these specimens could get into the hands of a bad dude, like Saddam Hussein, for example, because it could be a dangerous biological warfare agent. But if that happened, and someone got infected, then it would a massive huge big deal. Any infected soldier would be in an isolation ward at Walter Reed, with front-page stories all over every newspaper in America. Or maybe he'd be whisked off to a secret government camp by black helicopters, never to be heard from again. But infected soldiers wouldn't be casually sending emails to their buddies back in the states.

That soldier was later determined to be an immunocompromised leukemia patient, so giving him a live virus vaccine was an accidental "medical misadventure".
But from what I heard on the Ferguson show, it sounded like this was the real deal, not a runaway dose of Vaccinia virus in an immunocompromised person.

It's a fascinating look into the way their minds work.
Or rather, fail to work.
I can't look away, but wow.
OT: my fave bit of crazy on this incident so far can be paraphrased thus: "Sure, von Brunn was a nut, but it was Obama that pushed him too far and soon the average American is going to rise up in armed insurrection!"
How long though will it be before we see more violence in America as our government merrily dismantles our free market place and nationalizes every area of society and business they can get their hands on? As millions are unemployed or in the process of losing their jobs as well as their homes and life savings, how long do you think it will be before more and more anger bubbles up and over the brim of American society?
Sure, today it was a nut job who should have been shot and killed like the rabid dog he is, but tomorrow? It could be some hard working stiff who can’t stand seeing his kids go hungry, or some tired mother who has lost her home and doesn’t know where to go. Obama can tell Americans to eat cake all he wants, but sooner or later this squishing of America and the crushing of Americans under his fascist heel will cause Mr. and Mrs. average American to finally scream, “We have had enough!” And when that day comes, you won’t be able to say it was a random act or that it won’t happen again. When that day comes, the French Revolution may very well be rerun and it won’t be pretty
I don't want to link to that lunatic directly, but you can find a link over here:

And? That joke was a POS, and I don't think your ancestry is
relevant, unless you think that we should compare pedigrees to decide
who gets off and who gets called names. Perhaps we could all submit to
skin color tests, and keep the results on file, so we know who's
allowed to say what around here.
Or maybe your ancestry has nothing to do with it.

Well, that's why I thought this report was significant enough to mention. If the anecdotal report were true, that would be very bad news indeed (i.e. someone had gotten hold of one of Saddam's "toys.")
A couple guys I was in basic with had scratched the area where they were given the vacinne. It caused an enlarged area of their arm get infected. They got over it, just took longer to heal. This could be a case of a soldier who didn't listen when the medics told him not to scratch it.

Obama writes girl a note for missing school
Jun. 11, 2009 03:20 PM
GREEN BAY, Wis. - Ten-year-old Kennedy Corpus has a rock-solid excuse for missing the last day of school: a personal note to her teacher from President Barack Obama.
Her father, John Corpus of Green Bay, stood to ask Obama about health care during the president's town hall-style meeting at Southwest High School on Thursday. He told Obama that his daughter was missing school to attend the event and that he hoped she didn't get in trouble.
"Do you need me to write a note?" Obama asked. The crowd laughed, but the president was serious.

That article cracked me up.
On a piece of paper, he wrote: "To Kennedy's teacher: Please excuse Kennedy's absence. She's with me. Barack Obama." He stepped off the stage to hand-deliver the note - to Kennedy's surprise.
"I thought he was joking until he started walking down," Kennedy said after the event, showing off the note in front of a bank of television cameras. "It was like the best thing ever."
The fourth-grader at Aldo Leopold elementary in Green Bay already knew what she was going to do with the note: frame it along with her ticket to the event. She said she'd make a copy for her teacher.
I think that's pretty cute. I'd think so no matter what President did it.

they started doing it in 1985 (I think) when the celts and lakers were meeting in the finals almost every year. it was done more for the benefit of the media, which had to go coast to coast 5 times in a 7 game series in the 1984 finals. but it does pervert the whole concept of home court advantage because it actually works to the disadvantage of the home team because if they don't win the first two at home, they can be closed out on the road. And "pivotal" game 5, which is always a home game for the team with the best record, goes to the road team.

Those Who Favor Obama’s Auto Plan Should Buy GM Cars
With the unhappy Barney Frank “leaning on GM” to keep a facility open in his district, we can see how decisions at the troubled auto manufacturer will be subject to political pressures at the expense of legitimate busines conerns. Would a company effectively owned by the government want to antagonize the chairman of a powerful House committee, even if he is a career politician with zero experience in the private sector?
What does this mean-spirited Massachusetts Congressman know about running a business? He’s spent his professional life trying to regulate them without considering the consequences of his actions. He has never working in an enterprise which produces things, creates wealth, expands opportunity and fosters innovation. And yet he has a say in how GM runs its business.
This is what happens when government takes control of private enterprise. Political considerations replace economic ones.
Those who want to give people like Barney a say in the running of General Motors (and Chrysler for that matter), that is those who favor Obama’s Auto Plan, can show that they really believe this is the right way to manufacture automobiles by put their money where their mouths are. When it comes time for them to buy a new car, they should buy a GM (or Chrysler) model. Heck, why wait? Show your confidence in this plan by buying one now.
But, something tells me that Obama’s actions notwitstanding, his strongest supporters will be driving BMWs, Audis, Lexises (Lexi?) and Saabs, at least those who live in my neck of the woods. In these parts, it does seem that a great number of those makes continue to sport Obama stickers on their bumpers.
UPDATE: Moe Lane contends I’m not taking this “nearly far enough“:

Cruise was trying too hard to be in character and never quite figured out what that meant, so he was kinda wooden. Best thing it does is make you think of what choices you'd make in a similar circumstance.

Letterman jokes about Willow Palin joke
In his opening monologue, the late-night host admitted to being depressed about angering Palin -- so he went out and spent $150,000 on clothes.
After the show's first block and, Tejera adds, Letterman addressed the issue head on by reading a statement from the governor’s husband, Todd, and then a response from Gov. Palin herself. Letterman repeated the jokes that the Palins are upset about, cautioning beforehand this could "very well be my last show." Letterman then said he was not necessarily proud of the jokes and that they were just that -- jokes to get a laugh. "I recognize these are ugly, these are actually ugly, these are borderline, but again, in an act of desperation to get cheap laughs, what I've been doing in the last 30 years." Letterman insisted these were not jokes about Gov. Palin's 14-year-old daughter, citing his record over the years.
"Yes, maybe these are questionable because the girl who actually, uh, excuse me, but was knocked up, is now 18-years-old. So the difference there is 14-years-old and of legal age, okay, now I can't really defend the joke, I agree, unpleasant, ugly, but I would never, never think that it was funny to use a 14-year-old girl as joke like this for God's sake."

The fact that the film glorified the German officers who sought to assassinate Hitler as having "decided to confront evil," when historically we know that these officers who had sworn personal allegiance to him decided to kill him only after it was clear that they were going lose the war, was enough to make me have no interest whatsoever in seeing the film.

Actually, the records show that she didn't know how to swim and she asked to drive Senator Kennedy's car in to the water "to see if it would float". The bet was 5 dollars and Tedward took it. He lost and it was a tragic loss of life. The only thing he could do was admit gambling. He's a real lawful guy. He always follows the law first. She was a criminal. A criminal! /sarc

(re #300) iceweasel, I've just been over to alicublog and it doesn't seem much better than Stormfront. It's arguing elsewhere for Letterman's implication that the Palin women are all sluts, starting with the 14 year old - that this is a "joke".
Letterman is a grotesque misogynist and, by extension, so are those who approve of his comments on that score.
Hey Zimriel-- I'm with you on Letterman: he's a misogynist with deep seated issues against all women, and i have no time or patience for anyone who would defend his comments.
I linked one post at alicublog above only because it was a way of avoiding linking directly to the wacko post on the fringe blog; it shouldn't be considered an endorsement of the content of alicublog overall or any other post there.
If I could have found another way of mentioning the fringe blog's post without linking alicu, I would have done so. I was sort of between a rock and a hard place.
(i guess I could have just quoted the fringe blog and provided no links whatsoever, but I'm kind of pedantic about trying to make sources available.)
Hope that clears it up.

DHS Urged To Expedite Updated Report On Right Wing Extremism
On Thursday, the judicial advocacy organization, People for the American Way, faxed a letter to Napolitano calling on the Department of Homeland Security Chief to "expedite the approval of the 'Rightwing Extremism' report and release a final version as soon as possible."
"Although the [original] report was withdrawn with the intent of being rewritten, the events of the last two weeks show that its core findings are fundamentally correct: 'The economic downturn and the election of the first African-American president present unique drivers for rightwing radicalization and recruitment.'
....
I urge you to expedite the approval of the "Rightwing Extremism" report and release a final version as soon as possible," Keegan added. "Moreover, the report should offer the best available assessment of possible threats from far-right groups and individuals, no matter how politically inconvenient the findings might be to some groups. If the report can not be released immediately, please announce publicly the current status of the report and when you expect it to be published."

the best we can do it to try and not take the bait when someone attacks us. i prefer to use sarcasm or a mild putdown in response. although I have actually typed some nasty responses, but thought better of hitting the "post this comment" button and allowed myself to chill. I would never want anyone on a blog to think they were able to rile me up all that much. but I do believe that defending a friend who is being ganged up on is a noble endeavor.

Stonefish aren't that elusive. They're spotted along beaches anywhere along the Queensland coast. In the beach, they're easier to spot (still looking like rocks) and keep away from... as long as you know to look for them.
Also need to watch for the tiny blue-ringed octopus. Also quite a nasty piece of work.

someone down dinged one of my comments the other day, which was kind of funny because it was the only comment I ever had that made the top 10 .... there were like 17 + dings and 1 - ding. Good news: John Thune just sent an email out (I'm on his list), for the Government Ownership Exit Plan Act of 2009, "legislation to end government ownership of private entities acquired under the TARP".:
President Obama has said that the federal government is a “reluctant shareholder” and wants to end its ownership of private firms as soon as possible. This bill puts those words into action and gives him a chance to show that he meant what he said.
I hope this bill passes and that Obama signs it.

Thanks. I figured it might be something like that.
It is very hard to find a blog which attacks nuttery and is at the same time not nutty itself.
Indeed. I find stuff all the time I want to post in the spinoff links because I think it's worthy of discussion - but I always fear people will take my posting of the link as an endorsement of the content.
Alicu does have a lot of nuttery and their Letterman stuff is egregious. As an aside, I think there's loads of nuttery surrounding the Letterman comments on both sides of the spectrum. People are persisting in seeing this as some sort of right/left issue, when to me it's just flat out misogyny -- which unfortunately pops up on both the right and the left. Both the Clinton and Palin campaigns suffered from it.
I wish people were using the Letterman comments as an opportunity to have a discussion about sexism and misogyny, rather than as an excuse to attack/defend their other political agendas.
Anyway, thanks.

I upding pretty frequently (often because it's easier than typing "good one" or "I agree"), but I pretty much never down-ding.
I realized early on that many people were "ding counters" who demanded an explanation for every "minus" they saw. Even if the down-ding just signified "lame joke" or " I disagree", people get all flustered.

Isn't gravitas a demitasse with some gravlax on the side?
Gravitas is the leftover gravel on the side of European roads. Not to be confused with sheep dung, the particles are smaller, harder, and less likely to smell. From the Italian, 'Gravitasimo', or "road rash".

The funniest downdings I ever got was when I suggested that last summer nobody would have shown up at the Denver Democratic Convention if the Grateful Dead would have just played outside the city limits....It was a joke..

If Jack the Ripper haddn't hacked all those hookers up, he could have guided them out of their lives of sin. That is just unreal. Democrats have no morals, no principles, no ethics, no, well, much of anything that seperates them from lower animals, do they?
That is so unreal on so many dimensions. I can't believe anyone could have uttered those words.
(I realize you were responding to the post, but I'm lazy and under a bit of time pressure, and this will let anyone who wants to see what I'm raving about the ability to step back up the call stack of the thread and find why I'm so incensed. No disrespect intended :-)

Yeah, I can't believe anyone could have been so clueless as to say that.
Small point: not every democrat lacks all morals, principles, ethics, whatever...but if you want to argue that the media lacks those things, I won't be objecting. :-)
The tool who said it probably votes Democratic, but for me it's his media-whore status that's more relevant.
