Chinese Monkey Snub Sets Off Simian Search

Weird • Views: 3,783

Despite the feng shui expert, they’ve taken the monkeys off the table.

LOS ANGELES (AP) — The Los Angeles Zoo may have the nation’s only monkey lair approved by a feng shui expert. There’s only one problem: No monkeys.

The city spent $7.4 million building the China-themed primate enclosure — complete with Canary Island palm trees, artificial trees with extra springy limbs, and a viewing structure with Chinese-style tilework — after China promised to lend the zoo a trio of rare golden snub-nosed monkeys.

But now the Chinese government has taken the monkeys off the table, leaving zoo officials searching for suitable stand-in simians to take the place of the golden monkeys, known for their blue-faces and blond-hair.

“Within 60 days, some lucky monkey will have a home there,” City Councilman Tom LaBonge, whose district includes the zoo, said Thursday.

Zoo spokesman Jason Jacobs said negotiations with Chinese officials broke down several weeks ago, but he did not know why.

Is the city gov't in LA predominatly donks? 7.4 mil for a money house sounds about their speed. Instead of spending it on the police, fire, depts. Where it might do someone some good.

China Golden Monkey Exhibit

City of Los Angeles
Los Angeles, California

As the first phase of the Los Angeles Zoo and Botanical Garden’s Asian Forest Concept Plan, the Golden Monkey exhibit takes advantage of existing topography. A stand of mature trees growing on sloping terrain highlights these charismatic tree-dwellers. The design provides a comfortable treetop habitat for monkeys, while a pavilion shelter places visitors right in the canopy for optimal viewing. Incorporating the traditional Chinese practice of feng shui in the placement of the architectural elements, the viewing pavilion and the night quarters were influenced by an analysis of the flow of energy on the site.

True, it does. The feng shui might have been part of the deal with the Chinese. I know that when I worked for a Chinese developer they took that into account with their buildings and sites from time to time. They only charged $4,500 which is actually not so bad for a consultation invoice.

A symbolic gesture for the benefit of the Chinese. See if you can find out who's responsible for the lack of monkey part.

OK I'll look. Found this from an older city document:

In November 2002 the City made a cultural and conservation agreement with officials from the China Wildlife Conservation Association in Beijing to begin the process of establishing a long-term cultural relationship that will encourage an exchange of exotic wildlife and zoological expertise. The Los Angeles Zoo is establishing this long-term cooperative relationship to facilitate animal exchanges or long-term loans. Among the animals being considered first for the cultural exchange are Golden Monkeys. The BOE was authorized by the Zoo Bond Oversight Committee and Zoo Department to add a new adjacent exhibit for the Golden Monkeys into the Pachyderm Forest project.

The feng shui was done specifically for golden monkeys. Any other kind of monkey or ape will screw the feng shui up. Unless they face north all the time and what's the chances of that.

It's true, my not golden monkey is always throwing my Feng Shui mirrors about, and it's criminal what they do with the flutes.

My LL baseball team has a doubleheader against "Cobra Kai" tomorrow. With pitch count restrictions and 5 games per week, everyone on the team has to be able to take a turn on the mound. Yikes. Its a war of attrition and its up to the manager to figure out which games to try to win and which games are hopeless so cut your losses and give the ball to the right fielder to finish. I figure by the end of the season I'll have this all figured out.

Hash browns;
scattered - scattered
covered - cheese
smothered - onions

Direct translation is: Eight Symbols

those are the eight distinct groups of three lines, in combinations of solid lines and dashes which are depicted. The unbroken one yin and the broken one yang. Thus the three solid lines are the maximum yin, and the three broken lines the maximum yang. The combinations represent all of the variations and the yin-yang symbol represents them in balance.

It is also fundamental to internal martial arts, where one may sense an opponents weakness in the exhaustion of yang when they are at their strongest, and see the opportunity for a counter.

The two yin yang expand to eight basic "states" represented by the trigrams, from there we get the 64 hexagrams that make up the I-Ching. Within this is said to be all variations of strategy, attack, retreat, counter, counter-counter on and on.

Hey, going back to the reason for the snub I did find this:

But with the project now complete, authorities in the People's Republic, who make millions of dollars each year loaning pandas and other animals to US zoos, have suddenly pulled out of the deal, apparently in protest at new US government rules about how the proceeds can be spent.

"They were resentful that federal policy on importing any endangered species required that any money exchanged for that animal had to be used to conserve the habitat and wild population of that species," said David Towne, a Seattle-based consultant who helped broker the original deal.

LA Zoo now intends to fill its enclosure with a mixed collection of Asian animals, including a deer and some pheasants. "We're obviously disappointed, but ... it just didn't happen," said a zoo spokesman. "They said no, and we're going to Plan B."

No, I hadn't heard of that story. BTW for everyone who doesn't know: The sub John S. McCain is named after Senator McCain's father, who was actually the second John Sidney McCain.

Now I'm gettin' hungry.

When I was in college we had a great restaurant just off campus. It only sat 12 people, 6 at the counter and 6 along the window sill...if you were late you stood in line outside. The man who owned it appeared to be in his seventies and he only had one item on the menu...Irish White Gravy Stew, it was the best I've even eaten. Two sizes, large and small. If you were a regular you knew to ask for a large red-top...a large stew with a ladle of chili in the middle...always came with two slices of white bread for sopp'n.

He never sold the chili by it self...that was for red-top only.

This may be nothing, it may be something. Chinese military is not necessarily know for their submarine technology or expertise, as common knowledge. Unless there's some defense industry info to the contrary, I'd have to think this was more rookie submariner stuff than 'pushing the limit' aggressiveness.

Subic Bay is a large sub base so I'm sure any Chinese subs want to hang around there to ploy. Gonna have to read up on this stuff.

Military issues fascinate me enough, but after reading Blind Man's Bluff about the history of American submarine history, I'm chronically intrigued. I've had a couple of instances flying into Oahu as a boomer or attack sub is running on the surface into Pearl... Honco Salute. Nothing like seeing quintessential ace of spades of American sea power gliding into port after a few months in the deep.

Good questions. A sub would attempt to get into trail positon on surface ship and shadow to get a feel for operational patterns. So getting tangled in the towed array isn't a big surprise.

Our SSN's had several collisions with Russian boats while trailing during the cold war.

Who let these people out of the clown car again?

Rice on UN sanctions

U.S. representative to the United Nations Susan Rice appeared in the White House Briefing Room at the beginning of the on-camera briefing to talk about the U.N. sanctions against North Korea.

She said she would "not be surprised" if the North Koreans responded provocatively to today's actions.

She also said the provisions allowing for inspection of ships suspected of transporting weapons of mass destruction or missile technology does not provide authority for military force to direct suspect ships to port for inspection or to seize the cargo. In this respect, she alluded to giving up a bit in the negotiations, but "we feel we got a lot." She would not go into details.

Obama bows to China over NK sanctions in UN

We mentioned earlier that Obama wanted all UN members to be able to search all ships bound for North Korea if that ship was not in the territorial waters of NK and reasonable suspicion existed that prohibited items (read: nuclear-bomb enabling stuff sent from China) were on board.

The United States insisted that this provision be a part of the sanctions to be levied out of the UNSC on NK as a response to the latest nuke test.

China said no. Obama caved.

China's proffered logic was that "mandatory inspections of North Korean cargo would lead to military conflict."

Well, aren't those just special sanctions, excuse us Mr. Kim Jong-il, can we board and inspect your ship we suspect is carrying weapons of mass destruction, pretty please?

That's just what THEY want you to think

I'm thinking the Chinese sub had the snub nose monkeys on board who had Obama's nirth certifikit. The collision with the sonar array was a ploy! Think now, USS John McCain? McCain a Republican!? It was made to look like a collision but they actually made a transfer of the Obama nirth certifikit possessing snub-nosed monkeys from the Chinese sub onto the USS John "Republican" McCain!

The official name was: OPERATION SEA KITEH

312 shiplord kirel  Fri, Jun 12, 2009 10:09:05pm

The Plot Thickens!

This is the current, most highly evolved version of a warning I issued a couple of years ago on several message boards, including Rantburg and LGF:

Monkey uprising overruns Bangladeshi town
Monkeys terrorize Indian government.
Monkeys invade Indian embassy in Nepal. (An alliance with Maoist rebels?)

There is mounting evidence that monkeys and their relatives are plotting to overthrow human civilization, almost certainly in collusion with the great apes. That's right, you think they are cute hairy little bare-ass creatures, but don't let the sly beasts fool you!

At some point in the year 2012, the Moon will align with (something or other) and that will cause a great awakening in the consciousness of every ape, monkey, and baboon... spider monkeys and lemurs, too. Then the little monsters are going to rip and sack their way through the unsuspecting nations of the Earth.

Many leading humans have been aware of this simian conspiracy for some time. Why do you think experienced ape-fighter Charlton Heston was named to lead the NRA a few years ago? Heston is out of the loop now, but others have taken his place in preparing our resistance. Stock up on guns, ammo, and bananas!

The conspiracy seems concentrated in the Indian subcontinent. An attempt to gain control of Indian nuclear weapons at an early stage? Can faithful Lizardoids be sure that all of our posters are loyal humans? Couldn't one or more of them be the proverbial monkey pecking at a keyboard, sent here to spy out the scientifically conscious resistance?

(Yes, I know that apes are not monkeys, but the great apes have long been suspected of masterminding the anti-human conspiracy.)

I will continue to raise the alarm about this gorilla warfare conspiracy, despite protests and threats from simian-citizens pressure groups and their lawyers and media dupes.

US cities may have to be bulldozed in order to survive
Dozens of US cities may have entire neighbourhoods bulldozed as part of drastic "shrink to survive" proposals being considered by the Obama administration to tackle economic decline.
By Tom Leonard in Flint, Michigan

The government looking at expanding a pioneering scheme in Flint, one of the poorest US cities, which involves razing entire districts and returning the land to nature.

Local politicians believe the city must contract by as much as 40 per cent, concentrating the dwindling population and local services into a more viable area.

The radical experiment is the brainchild of Dan Kildee, treasurer of Genesee County, which includes Flint.

Having outlined his strategy to Barack Obama during the election campaign, Mr Kildee has now been approached by the US government and a group of charities who want him to apply what he has learnt to the rest of the country.

Baby Born On NYC Mass Transit For 2nd Straight Day
Passenger Plays Doctor As Brooklyn Bus Becomes Makeshift Delivery Room Friday After 'R' Train Childbirth On Thursday
Believed To Be Nation's First Back-To-Back Mass Transit Births

NEW YORK (CBS) ― For the second day in a row a newborn girl has been born on New York City's mass transit system.

A Brooklyn bus became a makeshift delivery room on Friday morning. A woman passenger helped the mother deliver the baby that just couldn't wait to come aboard.

Paramedics took the new mother and baby to a hospital. Their names were not released.

On Thursday, conductor Bretta Sykes helped a mother deliver a girl in a subway car. The mother of two says she used information from her own chilbirth classes to coach the woman through her seven-minute delivery.

A New York City Transit spokesman says it could be the system's first consecutive births on a subway train and a bus.

Well, if there isn't an economic interest in developing the land, Kelo wouldn't apply. The gubernet would have to pay fair market value for the land. Even tho (I assume) land values in Flint are depressed, it's still more than if they condemned the property or just "took" it.

This is the the wording from the Michigan example via Kildee:

Compounding the abandonment problem was the state’s tax foreclosure system. Under Michigan's former system of tax foreclosure, abandoned properties were either transferred to private speculators through tax lien sales or became state-owned property through foreclosure. The former system even encouraged low-end reuse of tax reverted land due to of the length of time between abandonment and reuse – often more than five years. A series of changes to Michigan law have provided an opportunity for Michigan’s counties. The amount of time it takes to foreclose on a property has been cut in half, and clear title can be passed to the county or the state.

Because Plato wrote it.

It might have been more to our way of calling things to just call it "The Republic" by Plato, but time and cultural differences have given us over the ages, Plato's Republic.

If adopted I typically see some of these regulations tied in with Federal funding. So they force the states to adopt. Such as "do this or else you won't get Federal highway funds." That's one way. Then it comes with state and local management as mandated by the Feds. Essentially the Feds get involved in the development business in the long run. From GM to real estate. Might as well throw healthcare into the mix.

Not having a place mark to know where to look, I would venture to guess that you are encountering a translation issue. God as in Zeus, God as in The Gods. Many possibilities, but without an expert in ancient Greek or even a place mark to look, hard to say.

(Socrates was accused of not believing in the gods that the city believed in. God, Gods, . . .) Don't let it trouble you too much. After your third or fifth reading/listening, it may have a more clear meaning that a first reading/listening may not have readily revealed.

Can I put my name on hte list to live here. I mean yes I'm a grape ape not a monkey but I'd love to have a jungle gym, swimming hole and consistant feedings while all thats expected of me is the occassional butt scratching.

Good Morning Everyone,

I had a good night's sleep and feel much better. Once online, I connected to LGF and... oh noes! Now, I know the Chinese are building up their military. They have been known to copy other weapon systems and then create their own indigenous weapons. This has clearly gone TOO FAR! The very idea, building a submarine to be operated by Chinese Monkeys just stretches the imagination to the breaking... what?
Ooh! Monkey SNUB! I thought it said, Monkey Sub!?
Call off the search. Never mind.
