Wall Street robber barons are Moore's new on-screen enemy.

In case anyone would be interested by a quick peek into the heart of nirther craziness today...I give you the WND forums!

Poll: What do you think of Shepard Smith calling eligibility skeptics 'crazies'?

Somebody from Fox News calling right-wingers "crazies"? Priceless!

He's right - what's the problem?

Shep nailed it - I have new respect for Fox News

His comments were just window dressing for Fox's right-wing agenda

Controversy sells - it was a smart marketing move on his part

He's just one voice on Fox

It looks like Fox has one house liberal

Whatever happened to "fair and balanced"?

It looks like he's brushing up on his resume for MSNBC

Shepard Smith is a loose cannon

His good poise and great facial structure overshadow his analytical abilities

He doesn't even demonstrate journalistic curiosity about legitimate questions over Obama's eligibility

Other

I'll post the results of that in a minute, if people are interested.

Bonus fun fact: they're claiming that Fox News--yes, all of Fox News-- is part of a leftist plot.

re: #54 Killgore Trout

I stopped by Free Republic earlier. They're doing the same thing.

Are they claiming that Fox News is part of a liberal conspiracy? I've been afraid to go over there...

here's a comment over on WingNutDaily forums:

"Fox TV" is a leftist psyop attempting to attract conservatives or conservative leaning people into believing that they actually have an alternative to the monolithic leftist mind control over every aspect of American life (and globally). Other than a small amount on AM radio and some on the internet - conservatives (and brainwashed liberal fascists who might be capable of independent thought) have no access to truth.

News reader Shepard Smith just confirmed this by blaming true conservative America for the terror crime and murder committed by a leftist drone. Just like the "mainstream media" - all biased, anti-US, anti-white-Christian, opinion - no facts.

Anyone who takes anything the "mainstream media" reports as reality or claims that someone like R. Murdoch is "far right" is a sure indicator that she is another brainwashed zombie of the far left liberal fascist world view.

here's another:

You have a good, normal inquiring mind and that's more than anyone can say about Shepard Smith! RE to the FEMA camps, there are about 600 currently scattered throughout the United States, some able to hold up to one million people! Google: "FEMA INTERNMENT CAMPS"! While you are at it also Google: "FEMA COFFINS" and draw your own conclusions! Videos are available among the many websites concerning both issues! All this purchased with OUR tax dollars while mainstream America sleeps soundly!

As I recall he has Halliburton stock. Probably oil companies too. They all do.

Wouldn't surprise me.

On the other hand, somebody needs to make a movie about these things.

Wells Fargo loan officers guided minorities toward high-rate mortgages and joked that they were "riding the stagecoach to hell" for routinely steering prime-loan-qualified customers toward subprime loans, according to sworn declarations by two former employees, filed in federal court this week.

[...]

Another former bank employee, Elizabeth Jacobson, a top Wells Fargo subprime loan officer, outlined techniques she and others used to turn prime borrowers into subprime borrowers, including talking them into borrowing the full amount even if they could afford a large down payment.

The rot went - pardon me, goes - all the way from the hedge funds at the top to the loan officers at the bottom. I could call in witnesses of my own from the time I worked as an editor for financial advice newsletters.

People need to go to jail. Unfortunately it'll end up being low-level idiots like Lynndie England who'll take the heat for the big guys that made - make - it all possible. And Madoff. One or two scapegoats and we're done.

'Twas ever thus, as my grandpa would have said.

I made a from-scratch black bottom pie last week, and it took more time and effort than almost anything I've baked... and I'm not a bad cook.
Worth it, though. Chocolate and ginger cookie crust, dark chocolate custard layer, rum custard layer, and whipped cream and shaved chocolate on top.
None left after the dinner party, dammit.

BS. Adam lost it because a) his style is not everyone's thing, and b) the adorable guy who won it got all the votes from the people who wanted the third place guy, Danny Gokey, to win.
There might have been a touch of homophobia in there, after Adam in drag was posted on the web prior to the finals.

I think Kris got the Gokey vote and also that Kris Allen-friendly fans were more likely to be AI viewers. I've never watched the show in my life.

The teevee switch yesterday - I didn't notice it. Haven't turned my set on in over a year. The box with the converter my family gave me is still unopened. My life has improved tremendously. This morning in the paper some people who couldn't figure it out said they'd just stop watching. A glorious development. The Tube is mind rot. Forget cameras and spyware. All they need to do is fill your synapses with quick cuts, Jack Bauer and sensational stories about Paris Hilton's crotch and your IQ drops 20 points a year.

LANSING, Mich. (AP) - Some Michigan counties have turned a few once-paved rural roads back to gravel to save money.

More than 20 of the state's 83 counties have reverted deteriorating paved roads to gravel in the last few years, according to the County Road Association of Michigan. The counties are struggling with their budgets because tax revenues have declined in the lingering recession.

Drug suspect turns tables on NYPD with videotape
Jun. 13, 2009 10:30 AM
Associated Press

NEW YORK - When undercover detectives busted Jose and Maximo Colon last year for selling cocaine at a seedy club in Queens, there was a glaring problem: The brothers hadn't done anything wrong.

But proclaiming innocence wasn't going to be good enough. The Dominican immigrants needed proof.

"I sat in the jail and thought ... how could I prove this? What could I do?" Jose, 24, recalled in Spanish during a recent interview.

As he glanced around a holding cell, the answer came to him: Security cameras. Since then, a vindicating video from the club's cameras has spared the brothers a possible prison term, resulted in two officers' arrest and become the basis for a multimillion-dollar lawsuit.

The officers, who are due back in court June 26, have pleaded not guilty, and New York Police Department officials have downplayed their case.

But the drug corruption case isn't alone.

I wouldn't want to be teaching kids though, way too demanding. With adult you are mostly able to use reason with kids well I don't know. .. .. ..

Digital TV hot line gets 700,000 calls over switch
* By RYAN NAKASHIMA, AP Business Writer - Sat Jun 13, 2009 2:32PM EDT

LOS ANGELES - Nearly 700,000 calls were received by a federal hot line this week from people confused about the nationwide switch from analog to digital TV broadcasts that occurred Friday.

The Federal Communications Commission said Saturday that about 317,450 calls went into the help line, 1-888-CALL-FCC, on Friday alone, the day analog signals were cut off.

About a third of the calls were about federal coupons to pay for digital converter boxes, an indication that at least 100,000 people still didn't have the right equipment to receive digital signals.

Another third of the calls were handled by live agents, and 30 percent of those were about how to operate the converter boxes. The FCC said most of the converter box questions were resolved when callers were told to re-scan the airwaves for digital frequencies.

Over 20 percent of the live calls were about reception issues.

"Our job is far from over," acting FCC Chairman Michael Copps said in a statement. "This transition is not a one-day affair. We have known about re-scanning and reception issues for some time and have been doing our best to get the word out."

The largest volume of calls came from the Chicago area, followed by Dallas-Ft. Worth, New York, Philadelphia and Baltimore.

Daniel Pipes via Spencer...

...better to have a bellicose, apocalyptic, in-your-face Ahmadinejad who scares the world than a sweet-talking Mousavi who again lulls it to sleep, even as thousands of centrifuges whir away.

And so, despite myself, I am rooting for Ahmadinejad.

I realize that this pragmatic view shocks the tender sensibilities of left-wingers such as Daily Kos, Huffington Post, and Rachel Maddow, but this is hardly the first time leftists think with their hearts, nor the first time that their unthinking sentimentality might lead to disaster.

How about rooting for a public uprising and trow out the mullahs?

An uprising would be nice, but isn't going to happen. Besides, who are they rising up against? Ahmadinejad may be president, but the mullahs are the ones who run the show through their chosen president. If the mullahs didn't want Ahamdinejad, they would have backed Mousavi and ensured his win.

Either way, the mullahs win.

I see the ongoing situation in Iran as a cynical ploy on the part of the mullahs to maintain power and to show that they are paying lip service to the will of the people, but they're not going to give them too much power, and definitely not enough say in how the nation goes forward.

As for the foreign policy objectives, Mousavi wasn't going to give up Iran's nuclear program or its ultimate intention to destroy Israel and cripple the US - the goals of the regime since it was founded in 1979. The mullahcracy isn't going to change that one iota.

In fact, the idea of reformist candidates for President is nearly as old as the regime in Tehran in the first place. Each President and his opponent have cast themselves as reformers, whether it was Khatami, Rafsanjani, or Ahmadinejad. The reform they speak of is not reform as we see it - more often than not, it's reform the Islamist way, and occasionally it's economic reform, but not a reform that gives up its ideologically driven desire to support proxy armies of terrorists like Hizbullah and Hamas or waging war against the US via the insurgency in Iraq or supporting Taliban against the Afghans.

Election battles turn into street fights in Iran

The tallies from previous elections — time-consuming paper ballots — began to trickle in hours after polls closed. This time, huge chunks of results — millions at a time — poured in almost immediately from a huge turnout of about 85 percent of Iran's 46.2 million voters. The final outcome: 62.6 percent of the vote to Ahmadinejad and 33.75 for Mousavi, a former prime minister from the 1980s.

I still call bullshit just based on the ability to count millions of votes by hand in hours.

I agree. Even with the mullahs gone I doubt they'd give up their nuclear ambitions. It part of national pride. However, a secular regime would cooperate better with inspectors and would be much less likely to use nukes if they got them.
I think this uprising isn't so much about who's president. I think people are sick of the system and the religious police. It might be unlikely but I'm still hoping this produces some real changes in Iran.

355 razorbacker  Sat, Jun 13, 2009 6:00:02pm

Evening, folks.

It's been a pleasant afternoon, spent in idle contemplation, grilling brats and burgers, watching the diamond Hogs hold off the Titans out in Omaha, and talking of this and that with a like-minded cadre of acquaintances.

The topic eventually turned to making a living, and then to the best jobs we had ever held or that people that we knew had held.

Now these aren't made-up jobs. Probably, no matter how much I might polish the old resume, I'm not going to be given the task of gently easing Jessica Simpson's teats into her bra every morn. I'd have to pay her, anyway, most likely.

But I think that the absolute best job I've ever beheld was one done by a friend of mine back in Paducah. This fellow drove back and forth to Cairo, Illinois, every morning and spent his time in an office overlooking the spot where the Ohio and Mississippi rivers merge. His job was to count his companies barges as they went past.

Think of it, friends. The barges went by so slowly that he could adjourn for a smoke, a beer, and a pulled pork sandwich and still get back in time to finish counting his string of barges. The barges were too large for anyone to slip one into his pocket and abscond with it. They were either upstream or downstream from him; they were unlikely to suddenly take off overland and hide. They were huge things and didn't cause any eyestrain while counting.

Assuming that one can count, I'd have to say that is just about the best job that I've ever heard of.

The Three Bears? Try 163,000 ... and counting
ROGER ALFORD, Associated Press Writer Roger Alford, Associated Press Writer – 25 mins ago

HARLAN, Ky. – Bobby Koger was deer hunting on a Kentucky hillside when a black bear gave him the fright of his life.

A 300-pound animal, apparently unhappy that an intruder was on his turf, came charging and didn't stop until Koger raised his .50 caliber muzzleloading rifle and fired from point-blank range. A hunting companion who witnessed the attack from a distance also shot the bruin, which wheeled, ran a short distance and collapsed.

Conservation officers concluded that they fired in self-defense at a bear that had lost its natural fear of humans.

With black bear populations rising, run-ins have become almost commonplace — more than 15,000 in the past year in states east of the Mississippi River according to a survey of state wildlife agencies.

Canadian bear researcher Hank Hristienko, who conducted the survey in January, found that 18 Eastern states were seeing more encounters with bears.

Most encounters involve hungry bears raiding backyard bird feeders or toppling garbage bins, but sometimes they're harrowing. In a 2006 attack, a 210-pound male bear killed a 6-year-old girl and mauled her 2-year-old brother as well as her mother who tried to fend off the animal. The attack occurred during a family outing in Tennessee's Cherokee National Forest.

Some bears have become brazen, dining beneath backyard fruit trees, raiding pet food bowls, even chasing campers. At a park near Prestonsburg, Ky., last year, a bear held tourists at bay inside a cabin until rangers arrived to chase it away.

They have also become road hazards. Wildlife agencies reported more than 1,300 struck by automobiles in 2008.

The U.S. bear population more than doubled between 1989 and 2006, rising from 165,000 to over 350,000, according to The International Association of Bear Research and Management, a bear conservation nonprofit that takes a periodic census of the animals. The Eastern states alone now have about 163,000 bears, according to findings Hristienko released in May.

Fri Jun 12, 8:33 pm ET

PORTSMOUTH, N.H. – Police in Portsmouth, N.H., said a man has been charged with lying about his involved in a hit-and-run accident by telling them his son was driving the vehicle. Problem is, the man's son is an infant. A police officer questioned the man about who "normally" drives the car and was told by the man that his 19-year-old son drives the vehicle, but wasn't home, Foster's Daily Democrat reported. The man told police he would have his son contact them.

Hoping for change. That's what gets all these diplomats and experts in trouble. They substitute hope and change for the facts on the ground. They misread the situation time and time again, thinking that these elections are really going to change things this time, when they ignore the underlying power structure in Iran.

It's a mistake with deadly consequences.

Now, do I wish that the people of Iran would finally overthrow the mullahs? Absolutely. It can't happen soon enough, but it's not going to happen without outside support, and a population that is readily determined to see the Islamic Revolution come to an end. Iran isn't ready for that, and I don't see them being ready for that anytime soon. The riots now occurring may turn out to be a catalyst, but the mullahs would sooner hold another sham election to confirm this one than to give in to the protesters.

I wonder if the crackdown in Iran is being done in co-ordination with North Korea's talk about weaponising plutonium, and then China's warning to the US not to, you know, actually enforce any sanctions against the Kims.

I feel like David Levinson on Independence Day watching the chess pieces move around...

re: #318 Killgore Trout

I disagree.

Most Iranians want to eat. The standard of living has collapsed. The middle class is earning about 20% of what it did 30 years ago. Think about that a minute. Say you started working 30 years ago with a salary of $20,000. Not a princely sum, but in a poor country it wasn't bad. Now you are reaching retirement age with a salary of $5,000 per year. Then you look at the mullahs who are all raking in billions. Prostitution, drug addiction and corruption everywhere.

In the middle of it all, some puny creep is insisting you need to starve like this to make nuclear weapons to attack Israel. Well, most Iranians don't give a shit about Israel, the Palestinians or the fat mullahs. The problem is the regime has plenty of weapons and an army of goons. What to do about them?

Remember, all dictatorships look solid before they crumble.

Jacob Andrew Fast, 20, was arraigned Wednesday on charges of first-degree home invasion and resisting and obstructing a police officer. ACORN In Iran?

Although most commentators predicted a close election in Iran, the official results show Mahmoud Ahmadinejad with a sweeping victory. There are many allegations of election fraud mostly as a result of the failure to require photo IDs and other voter identification, which permitted multiple voting:

By not requiring voters to present photo IDs and running off more than a million fake IDs in Qatar for use by the hundreds of thousands of loyal "bassij" (voluntary militiamen), the Tehran establishment made it possible for a huge number of voters to cast ballots in more than one polling station and substantially pad Ahmadinejad's support.

The Iranian government also set up a vast number of mobile ballots where voters were not required to provide their addresses. In former elections, bogus votes were uncovered by comparing the numbers cast with the number of registered voters in a given precinct. This kind of supervision is ruled out by mobile stations.

Multiple voting resulting from lack of identification. Sounds like ACORN. More votes than people. Sounds like Minnesota.

Things do go boom at times like this...

I favour a massive targeted military strike on the nuclear facilities. Yet to be realistic about it, we can safely assume that this would involve many civilian casualties. In this connection, it becomes politically important to consider whether there is popular support of the Islamofascist regime.

As you know, I have been taking a fair bit of flack for refusing to accept the politically correct proposition that the majority of Iranians in Iran do not support the Islamofascist regime.

I have heard from a couple of lizards (including you) who have lived in Iran and/or know Iranians, who assert that many Iranians are pro-Western. I am not in a position to dispute this evidence, but I would point out that it is anecdotal in nature and does not speak to how widespread the "opposition" actually is.

I was also informed, of course without evidence, that opposition to the regime is genetically ingrained in the population because people are genetically hardwired with western values. This is an interesting theory but certainly not one which has been scientifically proven or studied.

Lastly, when I expressed the view that a belief in widespread opposition was irrational and fanciful, I was informed that the present demonstrations are themselves evidence of such widespread opposition. Obviously, such a conclusion is premature at best and most likely unsupported by the numbers involved.

What I do know is that the Islamic Revolution did not happen yesterday, and in all the years since there has been no credible challenge to the regime. This indicates to me a very significant level of support and acquiescence.

So if anyone does have any real evidence of widespread opposition to Islamofascism in Iran, I would love to see it. Until then, please don't advocate that US policy be based on little more than wishful thinking.

The Iranians are tired of this government. I think Iran is a tinder box, and this election might be the spark. Perhaps the flames won't get out of control for awhile- maybe a long while. That said, the Iranian people are not "kids". There are thousands of men & women in the streets. The regime will indeed kill. The question is who will come to the aid of the people. The regular army might...

I'd don't think so. The Iranians are more than capable of getting it done.

What they need is too know that, the west in particular supports their cause and recognizes he right to overthrow the mullahs.

The Iranians are tired of this government. I think Iran is a tinder box, and this election might be the spark. Perhaps the flames won't get out of control for awhile- maybe a long while. But the Boston Tea Party happened years before Lexington and Concord. In that regard- the revolution to take back Iran may be underway.

They probably can see enough of the world outside their country to understand what they are missing. I wonder what sort of internet access they get there--how widespread is it and are there many restrictions?

We other fight for their freedom we sit on our hands.

One of greatest sins IMHO.

“But war, in a good cause, is not the greatest evil which a nation can suffer. War is an ugly thing, but not the ugliest of things: the decayed and degraded state of moral and patriotic feeling which thinks nothing worth a war, is worse. When a people are used as mere human instruments for firing cannon or thrusting bayonets, in the service and for the selfish purposes of a master, such war degrades a people. A war to protect other human beings against tyrannical injustice – a war to give victory to their own ideas of right and good, and which is their own war, carried on for an honest purpose by their free choice – is often the means of their regeneration. A man who has nothing which he is willing to fight for, nothing which he cares more about than he does about his personal safety, is a miserable creature who has no chance of being free, unless made and kept so by the exertions of better men than himself. As long as justice and injustice have not terminated their ever-renewing fight for ascendancy in the affairs of mankind, human beings must be willing, when need is, to do battle for the one against the other.”
John Stuart Mills

re: #405 Spare O'Lake

Bulls***. Iran's modern history suggests that the Iranian people have every reason to be pro-American. After WWI, the British dominated Iran. The Soviets spent the next twenty-five years setting up puppet political parties in an effort to subvert Iran from within. In 1946, Stalin tired of that strategy, and sent U.S.-made Sherman tanks across the Soviet border with Iran, occupying the northern oil fields. President Harry Truman told Stalin to get out, or we'd nuke them. At that time, we had nuclear weapons, but the Soviets did not. Stalin withdrew his tanks.

An Iranian communist political party financed by the Soviets won an election in the early 1950s. The CIA orchestrated opposition forces to overthrow the communist government, and install the Shah. The Shah was very pro-American. In 1979, President Jimmy Carter permitted the radicals to overthrow the Shah and seize our diplomats. The current situation arises from Carter's very poor judgment and weakness. I would say that many Iranians have fond memories of the Americans, as contrasted with their current mullah rulers.

Obama is actually worse than Carter philosophically. He doesn't believe in a muscular U.S. military with a global outreach. The U.S. cannot afford such a military, and also implement his ambitious social welfare agenda. He must shrink the U.S. military, and withdraw it from much of the world.

If he and Hillary can cut a deal with the mullahs that justifies U.S. withdrawal from the region, he has accomplished his aims. His problem is that such a withdrawal causes a new nuclear arms race in the region, and a likely nuclear exchange over the oilfields.

I am not interested in defending the survey - it just happens to be the first one I found after K refused to give me his links. I just want to consider the best evidence available, which with all due respect is not reflected in unscientific emotional arguments.
Have a good night.

It's on page 10, not page 9. It says that 49% think the nuke issue is important. So what?
More importantly, look at page 11...52% favour Nuclear Weapons! Doesn't that bother you?
Sheesh!
You are intellectually dishonest.
