Please keep this thread viewable by the general public, Charles. I just went grocery shopping and I've got a lot of soda charcoal ready for a troll roast. Let the trolls see; I'm HUNGRY!

Paul Bettany, what an inspired choice!

For those who didn't see it, he plays the proto-Darwinist Royal Navy ship's surgeon Stephen Maturin in Master and Commander, the brilliant film adaptation of several plots from Patrick O'Brien's immortal Aubrey/Maturin series of novels set in the Napoleonic Wars era. Captain Jack Aubrey is nobly portrayed by Russell Crowe.

Lakers Lakers Lakers!

Not the best teams in any final, but the games were pretty interesting anyway. Orlando was a Cinderalla that got to the ball, but didn't get the prince. Kobe gets *his* championship, and Derrick Fisher, who joined the Lakers the same year Kobe did, played a big role. Gasol gets a ring, Odom gets a ring. Ariza and Bynum get rings and might get more in the future. Good stories.

Says Hitchens:

Mention of the Lebanese elections impels me to pass on what I saw with my own eyes at a recent Hezbollah rally in south Beirut, Lebanon. In a large hall that featured the official attendance of a delegation from the Iranian Embassy, the most luridly displayed poster of the pro-Iranian party was a nuclear mushroom cloud! Underneath this telling symbol was a caption warning the "Zionists" of what lay in store. We sometimes forget that Iran still officially denies any intention of acquiring nuclear weapons. Yet Ahmadinejad recently hailed an Iranian missile launch as a counterpart to Iran's success with nuclear centrifuges, and Hezbollah has certainly been allowed to form the idea that the Iranian reactors may have nonpeaceful applications. This means, among other things, that the vicious manipulation by which the mullahs control Iran can no longer be considered as their "internal affair." Fascism at home sooner or later means fascism abroad. Face it now or fight it later. Meanwhile, give it its right name.

Students from the Sharif Polytechnic University have organized a large protest on the university campus. As they tried to move the protest into the street, in order to march down the streets of Tehran, their exits and gates were blocked by the regime’s security guards and they were blocked from leaving the university grounds; at this juncture the students began to chant loudly and when the sound of their chanting was heard by passersby on the street, they began to gather by the thousands at the other side of the university gates. As reported by the human rights and democracy activists in Iran, the entire area was surrounded by the regime’s guards, who have begun to attack and beat the students and supporting demonstrators. Javan’eh Farda (Tomorrow’s Youth) website reported that, in a statement, 125 members of the Sharif Polytechnic University faculty have condemned the attacks on the students and have jointly announced their resignations, stating that until the time the people’s rights are given, they will neither appear in classes nor for any exams.

Congresswoman's abandoned house angers neighbors

Laura Richardson's former home in Sacramento's upscale Curtis Park neighborhood is in disrepair. Residents say they have appealed to her and House Speaker Nancy Pelosi without success.
By Jeff Gottlieb
June 12, 2009
Reporting from Sacramento -- John Bailey thought it was great when his neighbor was elected to the House of Representatives in 2007.

"Not everyone lives next door to a congresswoman," he said.

But two years later, he doesn't feel so lucky. The congresswoman's house is abandoned and in disrepair, "a blight on the neighborhood," Bailey said.

He thinks the way that Rep. Laura Richardson (D-Long Beach) has treated her Sacramento home tells far more about her than her voting record.

"I wouldn't want anyone that irresponsible to represent me," said Bailey, like Richardson a liberal Democrat. "What I don't get is how she has the time to visit with Fidel Castro but doesn't have time for her own house. If you can't manage your own household, you probably shouldn't get involved in international affairs."

He's not alone. Neighbors have complained to the city, written letters and e-mails to Richardson and House Speaker Nancy Pelosi , but the three-bedroom house remains an eyesore. Neighbors just wish she would sell it or let it go into foreclosure, anything to get it into the hands of someone who would care.

"She shows total disregard for everyone in the neighborhood," said Sean Padovan, a retired police sergeant. "She ought to be embarrassed and ashamed."

Richardson did not return phone calls for this story.

The problems with the house began shortly after Richardson was elected to the Assembly in 2006 from Long Beach and bought the two-story house in the leafy Curtis Park neighborhood.

It wasn't long before Padovan, 62, angry that the lawn wasn't being mowed, knocked on Richardson's door, told her he was a neighbor and asked if she minded if he cut the grass. He hauled out his hand mower, and when Richardson still seemed to have no interest in taking care of her yard, he stuck a gardener's card in her door with a note saying that she should call him if she had questions.

He never heard from Richardson, not a thank-you or a wave as she walked past.

After Richardson was elected to Congress in 2007 in a special election, she moved out around Labor Day. She told Bailey that she planned to rent out the house. Later that year, he sent her an e-mail with a link to a real estate agent who could help. He never received a response.

With no one living in it, the house continued to deteriorate.

Angry at the demise of the once stately home and worried about what it would do to their property values, neighbors took things into their own hands.

Carrie Thomsen would walk across the street with her hose and water the yard. Janet Carlson sent her gardener to Richardson's house once a month for six months to mow the lawn. She paid kids $20 during the fall to rake the leaves. They once peeked inside and saw a dead bird in the living room. Her husband turned on the sprinklers the last two summers, worried that dry weeds would turn into a fire hazard.

Things got so bad that in the fall of 2008 rats began breeding in Richardson's backyard and soon moved into L. Kraft's house next door. It took him two months to get rid of them. ...

Nice.

Yeah, but this is Iran and Kamenei is - well, out for Kamenei. Maybe a lecture about how Iran cannot continue to be torn like this and either a) we'll hold new elections (and then muzzle Dinnerjacket) or b)
blame it all on Western Interference with the election and call for a do-over with stricter controls and wind up with someone other than Dinnerjacket running for Pres.

Or car chases. Its not a great movie without at least one car chase. Granted, some movies (like any Star Wars movie or Ben Hur) had car chase scenes with non-traditional types of cars, but they were still technically car chase scenes.

Instead he posts a public comment here -- for the UNregistered to see--claiming LGF isn't talking about the issue.

Sabotage, IMHO.

Well I suppose that's all true, but to be candid with you, and I've said this before, Iran's military hasn't been tested in any way since the Iran/Iraq War over 25 years or so ago and I still think that the Mullahs will simply a) change the leadership of the "vaunted revolutionary guards", b) change the Ministers he thinks need counting and definity change the Interior ministery.

I spent damn near all day Saturday tearing up the net and passing along what info I could here, and I know you and Killgore did as well. For this punk to demean our efforts and the time we spent really frosts my ass.

Yeah, me too. I've been posting at Ace's giving them kudos for posting on this and for telling them that our differences are smaller than this. And I've been posting over HERE giving hat-tips to conservative blogs, and even frickin' DEMOCRATIC UNDERGROUND, on what news I find.

So yeah, I'm mad at this troll too. And when Sharmuta pointed out he's not even a creationist, that he's just throwing poo in here - I dunno, that just buried the needle on my rage-o-meter.

I don't see it as a defense on your part, you're just providing a fact. I shouldn't have made that assumption, but it's an easy one to make as it has been seen so many times here before.

And I must say that the BBC crew was brave, wading in there, then going back in more surreptitiously when their gear and footage was confiscated. I liked the part where the crowd cased the cop away from them.

I did too. As much as I bitch about the media and think they screw us over -- there are some people who literally put their lives at risk in order to report.

I read a report somewhere that said there were loads of secret police mobilised, not wearing any kind of uniform, and beating people in the streets indiscriminately. I'll try to find it.

Truth is, it can happen anywhere and will. All it takes is one idiot. Since '84 the Pistons have won 3 titles and the Wings have won 4 and there has not been any riots or people trying to burn the city down in the aftermath.

Lots of cities have not been tested in decades. Who knows what would happen if a Championship came their way.

re: #272 realwest

Well I suppose that's all true, but to be candid with you, and I've said this before, Iran's military hasn't been tested in any way since the Iran/Iraq War over 25 years or so ago and I still think that the Mullahs will simply a) change the leadership of the "vaunted revolutionary guards", b) change the Ministers he thinks need counting and definity change the Interior ministery.
And I feel this way because Kahmeni won't allow Dinnerjacket to become a true "rival". Think of Kahmeni as Daley and Dinnerjacket as a shorter version of Blago.

You might have something, my read is the Mullahs (Kahmeni) tried to ease Dinnerjacket out with Mousavi. But Mousavi got to popular with the people and maybe slipped the leash with the reform movement. The Mullahs had to do something, Mousavi was getting more dangerous to them with the reform movement than Dinnerjacket.

Lot of internal power politics going on, has been for awhile. Overlay the election, the "surprise" result and things have spun out of control.

The movie is a British import, not something from Hollywood.

I'm actually a bit uncomfortable with the scene with the chimp. It juxtaposes the Sistine Chapel with Darwin, placing him in the position of God. That is not what he was about. Schlock is schlock, whether from Hollywood or England, and that scene will be red meat for the great unwashed who see Darwinian evolution as a replacement for the "truth" of Biblical teaching.

Yeah and I suspect that they would be the ones most chafffing at the rule of the Mullocracy as well.
Justdanny said several times that the youth in Iran is deeply concerned because they see no future (although he also said they'd join Iran in fighting any US interference in their internal affairs for them in Iran.
And while I AM TERRIBLY SORRY that so many people are being hurt and killed, I can't help but also say that Iran brought all of this on itself.

Agree with you. And what you said here highlights the problem for us:

he also said they'd join Iran in fighting any US interference in their internal affairs

I don't have any problem with us waiting to intervene, only because it's so important that we not make it appear like we're installing our own choice. i read something that captures how I feel about it:

"At the end of the day, this is about the Iranians and not about us. But I would like my country to do whatever will best help the opposition succeed. Mostly, that means keeping our mouths shut and letting the Iranians fight for their own country. But just because the United States should not be involved in actively helping the resistance, that doesn’t mean it should stamp a seal of approval on the really awful bullshit that’s going down right now."

And i don't see how Obama can continue with his plans to engage them. Widespread beatings of demonstrators, a stolen election, and a government that has lost all legitimacy in the eyes of its own people.

Obama better not recognise the election as being legitimate like the EU is.

Six and a half hours now til the 4pm protest in Tehran where Mousavi is supposedly going to speak....

395 MrPaulRevere  Sun, Jun 14, 2009 10:05:35pm

Hmmmmmm.....Just watched the "Creation" trailer. I haven't seen the whole film yet, but based on the trailer, it seemed a bit, ummm, ahistorical, shall we say. I.e. they made stuff up, and messed with timeframes, to make it movie-worthy.

In reality, Darwin spent 21 years writing that book -- well, 13 if you set aside the 8 years in the middle writing the barnacle book. And (not sure if the film conveys this) he was basically forced into finishing it when he got Wallace's letter outlining the exact same theory and stating that too was working on a similar book. Darwin did sort of write the book unwillingly, because he felt he "wasn't ready yet" due to not having all the necessary data. But I really don't think he personally cared too much about the religious or political consequences. He knew his theory would rock society's boat, but that was not the reason he delayed and procrastinated finishing it. He simply wanted to spend more time gathering supporting data, and didn't want to have his theory stand on shaky factual ground.

Also, his wife looked nothing like Jennifer Connelly.

The most essential need of young Iranians is to be recognized by US government. They need them not to accept the results and do not talk to A.N government as an official, approved one. They need help by sending true information. All the medias are under arrest or close control. Help them have the information.

The Hamas election was accepted as a 'legitimate' victory, despite the thuggery. We were also the ones calling for elections, so then to immediately not accept the result would have been more of a fumble than it already was.

In Iran it doesn't appear that they even counted the votes in the first place, and we also didn't pressure anyone into having these elections.

re: #394 iceweasel

And i don't see how Obama can continue with his plans to engage them. Widespread beatings of demonstrators, a stolen election, and a government that has lost all legitimacy in the eyes of its own people.

Obama better not recognise the election as being legitimate like the EU is.

Six and a half hours now til the 4pm protest in Tehran where Mousavi is supposedly going to speak....

First off, let me state that, IMO, the results are hinky. So, how can it be proved? Upthread, Laxmatt got hammered for calling this board out, which was deserved. But he made a salient comment, that this is an information war. Apparently, he does not realize that all of Iran's Internet access goes through a single server block in Tehran. Again, without monitors, the results can be manipulated any way the Guardian Council wants. They are in charge. Dinnerjacket was (and may continue to be) the President, but, at a fundamental power level, he is about third on the totem pole. If the election is ratified, he will continue to be the mouthpiece for his Masters.

re: #429 realwest

Do you really think that Obama does not want to undercut Ahmadinejad, because he thinks he can cut a deal with him. ?
I'm entirely sympathetic to those who opposed the Mullahs (Dinnerjacet) so please don't misunderstand my question, but do you really think that Obama hasn't come out with a strong condemnation cause he thinks he can cut a deal with Dinnerjacket?!

He might not want to seem like America is being "hegemonic". In reality, this uprising is Obama's best chance for a deal. If Short Shit falls and the mullahs are removed or humbled, we might have an Iranian government that wants to deal.

441 jcm  Sun, Jun 14, 2009 10:21:47pm

re: #414 realwest

How do we do that jcm? How do we say that the 38% (or whatever it was) represents the will of the people of Iran and we won't abide by the Majorities victory? Call or Demand new elections YES, but again, how do we - as a government - recognize those that lost the election? And if there's a way to do that, why the fuck didn't we do it when Hamas won it's first election victory?

The Mullahs are an illegitimate government, the election was fraudulent. It's in everyones interest to see the Mullahs ousted. Recognizing the opposition will encourage them. It also has the effect of undermines the mullahs both at home and abroad.

The difference with Hamas is they actually appear to have won, maybe the Palis will learn, maybe not.

Elections in Thugocracies are not so much for internal justification, but for international consumption, idiots like Rabbit Bait and the UN say "see they were elected" and give them legitimacy.

Our own revolution had iffy support, especially after Washington had to retreat from New York.

What RIGHT also should be considered.

Tapper is covering it; he's actually supporting the silence right now:

[Link: blogs.abcnews.com...]

We're reacting to concrete facts," a White House official tells ABC News. "We're collecting them still."

That said, the primary concerns the White House has about Iran are not about free and fair elections. The concerns are: Iran's pursuit of nuclear weapons and its support for terrorism.

"We have to deal with the Iran that we have rather than the Iran that we wish we had," says the official.

It's worth keeping in mind that President Obama expressing concern for, say, Mir-Hossein Moussavi, wouldn't necessarily be a way to help Moussavi. President Obama on Friday, and Secretary of State Clinton and White House press secretary Robert Gibbs since then, have all spoken about the enthusiasm among Iran's young people, and in so doing seem to be taking a long-term view.

re: #429 realwest

I think Obama's foreign policy is one of 'pragmatism', which translates into accepting the regime in power as being legitimate because it is the one in power.

I don't think he is really that ideologically invested in free and fair elections for Iranians. The Mullahs are in power, and he doesn't want to rock their boat because he wants high-level dialogue with them.

You can't negotiate with the faction that is not in power and you must negotiate with the faction that is.

The solution to this problem is to not want to, when things are as critical and insane as they are in Iran. To realize that the Mullahs et al are not trustworthy enough to even let the people have the candidate they want that was preselected by those very Mullahs, and and as such cannot be brokered with in any meaningful way. That any word, promise or bargain they give to foreigners would be worth as much as their overtures to their own people.

Did we come to the conclusion that the pint sized incumbent legitimately won the election?

The Hamas election was accepted as a 'legitimate' victory, despite the thuggery. We were also the ones calling for elections, so then to immediately not accept the result would have been more of a fumble than it already was.

In Iran it doesn't appear that they even counted the votes in the first place, and we also didn't pressure anyone into having these elections.

Well if y'all mean "me" by we, than yes "we" have come to the conclussion that the Irainian election was a fraud.
And you may be right about Hamas and no we didn't call for the Iranian elections, but does that mean that we have to recognize the outcome of those elections the way the EU did? Can we not get the UN to intervene here and call for a "do-over" under UN supervision?
I'm sorry Scion9, I don't pretend to have all of the answers, but all the information we have, from cell phone calls, photos, videos and BBC news videos, it certainly appears that an awful lot of folks are being beaten and killed for protesting this election. And a pretty tight blanket has been kept on foreign news media - to where the Beeb recently filed a complaint that Dinnerjacket's administration jammed their satellite uplink, in violation of a treaty that Iran signed. That really doesn't strike me as the reaction of a legitimately elected government.

Iran Opposition Seeks Fatwa Against Ahmadinejad
Mousavi Spokesman Says President's Re-Election Is 'Coup D'Etat'
By LARA SETRAKIAN
DUBAI, June 14, 2006
ABC News

A spokesman for Iranian presidential candidate Mir-Hossein Mousavi says his camp will keep pushing to change the results of Friday's election that gave incumbent President Mahmoud Ahmedinejad a landslide win.

"We are going to stay in the streets and ask the mullahs to give fatwas that Ahmedinejad is not our president. We are going to ask the Leader, through the will of the people, to change his mind," said Mostafa Makhmalbaf, who is speaking to the foreign press on Mousavi's behalf from his home in Paris.

The best someone can come up with in a political dispute is to have a religious fatwa declared?!? What a fucking crock!

False arrest, detention without hearing, etc... if you read their websites before hand the whole thing was planned out. This was pointed out to the mayor and chief, but those morons "had a deal."

They knew by flooding the jails and courts the 48 and 72 hour rules for hearings etc... was going out the window. The protestor compounded the problem by giving false names etc...

re: #493 Pvt Bin Jammin

We had a bizarre experience locally with a 'copwatch' group. They had a beef with how complaint forms were handed out out, as the custom was to talk to talk to a Lt. as to what the problem was before you got a form. They wanted a form any time reason at any time, no questions asked. When the activist was denied a form, he slammed his head on the counter so he could walk out of the station with a welt or something and his buddies could film it and claim brutality. Sadly for him the lobby camera caught the whole thing on tape and the group was made a laughingstock.

Fidel Castro's son tricked in Internet love sting

A rather embarrassing breach in Cuba’s security system: One of Fidel Castro’s sons Antonio Castro Soto del Valle had an eight-month affair with “Claudia”—a “Colombian woman” who turned out to be a male prankster in Miami. "Guess where I am and I will make love to you without stopping," Soto del Valle wrote at one point. “Claudia” turned out to be “Luis Domínguez, a Cuban-born Miamian who unveiled the sting on Americateve TV Channel 41 in Miami, saying it was designed to 'shatter the myth of an impenetrable' security system.” According to the Miami Herald, “ 'Claudia's' cyber-boyfriend never revealed any state secrets and made no mention of Fidel during their more than 20 Internet chats. But he sent her what he said were his phone number and home address in Havana, wrote that he had no bodyguards and gave advance notice of a trip to Mexico—all breaches of the tight secrecy that has always surrounded Fidel Castro's family life.”

Apparently the guy blogs (of course) and has posted the chat transcripts and emails. Haven't seen that yet myself!
