… for a limited time.

Read all the rules before you register, and commit them to memory. The short version:

  • Don’t register with a proxy.
  • Don’t register with a throwaway email address.
  • Don’t register more than one account at a time.
  • Don’t be a jerk.
  • Don’t be a troll.
  • Don’t be a sock puppet. Stinky hates sock puppets.
  • Do play nice.

And then everything will be groovy.

UPDATE at 6/15/09 4:19:33 pm:

Now closed, with 90 hatchlings.

6 Million Comment Man! How have you been?

4 Mostly sane, most of the time.  Mon, Jun 15, 2009 3:23:21pm

O Trollies, said the Lizardim,
"You've had a pleasant run!
Shall we be trotting home again?'
But answer came there none--
And this was scarcely odd, because
They'd eaten every one.

It's most like a social networking site but the Iranians have been using it to get information out of the country. Some people are still updating their twitters but it's the middle of the night there so updates are less frequent.

President Barack Obama says its up to Iran to determine its own leaders.

But he also says he's troubled by situation in Iran and that it would be wrong to stay silent. Mr. Obama says any investigation into Iranian election results must not result in bloodshed.

There's a story that Senator Bilbo of Mississippi, who was a Klansman and a vicious racist, once received a less-than-complimentary letter from a constituent with an Italian-American surname. He responded to the writer personally, opening with the salutation, "Dear Wop..."

His remarks were made at the end of a meeting with Italian Prime Minister Silvio Berlesconi.

And Berlesconi was no doubt wondering,

Does he have any contact with reality at all?

I have this hideous feeling that the President's main reaction to the events in Iran is... resentment that it had to happen when he was announcing his new and improved version of socialized medicine, thus distracting people from the most important thing in the world- namely, listening to him.

It is an odd statement but it's pretty much what I expected. In a weird sort of way it indicates to me that the US is working on supporting the protesters. It's not something we'd really want to advertise. If the US endorsed Mousavi claiming that he's going to overthrow the Mullahs the Iranians would arrest him and execute him for treason. Mousavi is sort of a prick himself and if these protests are just to put him in power there's not much we can gain from it. If these protests lead to the overthrow of the mullahs then we'll quietly be helping them. It's best not to broadcast our support right now.

No-win situation for Obama team on Iran

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - The Obama administration faces a dilemma over how to respond to Iran's disputed election. Strong criticism could backfire but a muted response leaves an impression of weakness.

So far senior U.S. officials have given a guarded response to the disputed vote, which sparked violent protests after hard-line President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad's was declared the easy victor over ex-prime minister Mirhossein Mousavi.

Several analysts said on Monday the White House was in a no-win situation but the best option was to stand back rather inject U.S. views into the Iranian political debate.

"The U.S. ability to do harm in Iranian politics is much greater than doing good," said Middle East expert Jon Alterman of the Center for Strategic and International Studies.

Sure. If you haven't noticed, the Iranian government has already been making PUBLIC statements that all the protest and riots are the work of the West.

If NO ONE said a word, if there was not an ounce of criticism from anyone in the West, they would still be blaming this on the West.

re: #263 Democratic Socialist

For those of us who are clammoring for the president to make a firebreathing speech denouncing the recent fraudulant election results in Iran. I would remind you that the first President Bush said next to nothing during the destruction of the Berlin Wall. He may have caught a lot of greef from various political reactionaries from both the left and the right for it, but in the long run it looks like it was the logical thing to do.

Why let the Iranian heirarchy use a speech from the president as a propaganda tool? Using it to stir up hardline support, by saying these protesters are nothing more than hired goons of the United States and the West?

MSCI upgrades Israel's status to 'developed'
Published: 06.16.09, 00:54 / Israel News
Investment counseling giant MSCI Barra has reclassified its Israel Index from an emerging market to a developed one.

As part of the change, which will go into effect this November, Israel will be ranked 18 out of the 24 developed economies in the world. (Tani Goldstein)

And were are Jordan, Egypt, Syria, Lebanon, Saudi Arabia, etc ranked?

re: #295 Walter L. Newton

Sure. If you haven't noticed, the Iranian government has already been making PUBLIC statements that all the protest and riots are the work of the West.

If NO ONE said a word, if there was not an ounce of criticism from anyone in the West, they would still be blaming this on the West.

Come on, get real.

For a short window in Iran people are questioning what the government and state run media are saying. They don't believe the election results, right? They probably are not believing that the protests are the result of the west either. BUT, the president of the Great Satan makes a big speech questioning the results and supporting the protesters, the claims of western support for the protesters seems a little more valid. And if the government wasn't lying about the west supporting the protests, maybe they aren't lying about the election results.

I read Harry Potter 7 while we were up at the Tetons. I had a great time going around spoiling it for everyone.

"It turns out...Voldemort is really his father, and they join forces to defeat the real eveil emperor."

"Voldemort dies while saying 'Rosebud', and it turns out that that's his childhood wand."

"They get to the end, and Harry can't throw the Elder Wand into the lake of fire, even though Ron is telling him to, and then Draco bites off his finger and falls into the lake and dies."

422 BARACK THE VOTE  Mon, Jun 15, 2009 4:28:13pm

Just ran across this:

According to an actual Iranian in Iran, the administration’s silence helps the cause.

A former student of mine from Iran heard from his brother for the first time in a couple of days. When my student bemoaned the cautiousness of Obama administration’s statements, his brother confirmed one aspect of Spencer Ackerman’s account of the administration’s behavior, saying that government forces are already accusing protesters of collaborating with the U.S., and that protesters are actually worried that Obama will make an explicit show of support, as that would restore some credibility to what the government has said about the election and, more importantly, could undermine a reform coalition in which some factions are none-too-fond of America.

[Link: edgeofthewest.wordpress.com...]

Of course this is an anecdote from only one person, but it's food for thought.

On the one hand, Obama could give a firebreathing speech condemning the Iranian authorities for injuring, maiming, and murdering many Iranian demonstrators. On the other hand, he could give a speech praising the Iranian authorities for their skillful tactics in suppressing an unarmed insurgency, saying that he wants the U.S. military to travel to Iran to observe and learn from the Iranian military and police.

No false dichotomy there!/

What's the latest on Iran? I know the Basiji are reported to have fired on and killed at least one protester. The Guard supposedly controls the Basiji and Supreme Commander Khamenei controls the Guard, at least constitutionally, but the Guard is said to be loyal to Ahmadinejad and the Basiji are fanatics loyal to Khamenei, or at least the council. Who is really responsible for this escalation of violence? It could have just been poor discipline from the troops on the ground, it was also reported that a Basiji building was being burned. Any one heard anything else?

Video on the prior thread is from that incident.

Everyone knew exactly where George W. Bush fell on the subject of the events in the Ukraine in 2004. That worked out just fine.

It's not 1979 any longer and the "Great Satan" doesn't play as well as it used to.

But Pensacola is beautiful. And you've got that amazing flight museum. My dad took me there and he knew everything about so many of the aircraft, I felt like I was on my own private tour. It was one of those great days. I'll always love Pensacola -- even in the summertime -- for that one day. :D

That flight museum is awesome!
I have to go everytime I'm in the area (usually Perdido Key)

Yes sir, E9

I had a soldier in my company by the name of SGT Cease. I used to joke with him on gunnery ranges that if he heard "Cease Fire", that that was not a personal fire command.....

635 J.S.  Mon, Jun 15, 2009 4:57:54pm

On Lou Dobbs tonight they had an interview with Fouad Ajami. Ajami provided an intriguing analysis of what's going on in Iran...(he contrasted the two rivals -- Ahmadinejad and Mousavi -- the former is a generation younger than Mousavi. Ahmadinejad is from the 1979 Revolution, and even today expresses that religious/revolutionary fervor (his supporters are rural, pious, etc.) Ajami argued that we in the West should not underestimate Ahmadinejad's support...Ajami made many other interesting observations...(including dispelling certain notions which has been proposed in the MSM about Mousavi....)

Never spent a winter in the upper mid-west, huh? ;)

I spent a winter just outside Dayton, Ohio. It just happened to be the year when a hundred year blizzard series snowed us in up to our eaves and kept it there for months. We had tunnels out to the highway, and our cars parked on the side, since there was no fucking way that we could keep our driveways cleared. That was brutal, too.

Yep.

But it lets the government sit back and let their 'protesters' do their dirty work. Not unlike the 'students' who took our hostages back in the 70's.

It's a much more cosmopolitan city than people would suspect from its population size, as it's simultaneously a military town, a college town, and a beach resort town. Makes for quite a diverse and interesting mix.

No violence ---

Freedom isn't won that way, never has been, he'd prefer the peace of slavery.

Well, some people seem to be under the impression that if the protesters remain peaceful and don't risk their necks, the government will surrender or at least become more inclusive. History, on the other hand, shows the Iranian government isn't going anywhere unless it is forcefully removed or collapses in fear.

Try July or Aug. in Paris (or I suspect, anyplace in Western Europe at that time of the year). Heck, the continent is surrounded on almost all sides by water, humid like you wouldn't believe. And that's coming from someone who was born and raised in Brooklyn.

So true. I even thought of the August in Paris comparison because I've heard it's so brutal. The whole city goes on vacation, from what I understand, and flees.

I spent a summer in brooklyn once. Loved Brooklyn, hated the heat. :)

Obama's Statement:

I have to give him a well done for the words themselves, and the tone.

While I have serious doubts about his definition of diplomacy, this statement appears (at least at first pass) to be reasonable and what's needed.
